Cross Roads Church will offer free Christmas meal BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Darlene Love once sang, “Nobody ought to be alone on Christmas,” and the members of Cross Roads Church in Mount Joy take that message to heart. The public is invited to a free
meal on Christmas Day, Monday, Dec. 25, at the church, 800 Donegal Springs Road. Food will be available for dine-in or takeout from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. “This is what Christmas is all about,” said Clare Funck, who is helping to organize the event. See Meal pg 2

auction yet.” Proceeds from auction sales as well as the sale of T-shirts and patches will also benefit the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Stumpf noted that the event has become much more than just a fun afternoon bike ride. “It’s really become a community event over the past 15 years,” he said. “Businesses and organizations support us, individuals participate, and people in the community come out to see all the motorcycles pass by. That’s got to be one of my favorite parts - seeing the people out along the route.” The ride is open to anyone who is interested in participating, and people may participate with any vehicle of their choice, including cars or trucks. “All of the proceeds for this event stay in our local area,” Stumpf said. “When you’re donating, you’re helping somebody you might know.” For more information on the ride, call Stumpf at 717-468-6197 or search for “Annual Frosty Balls & Frozen Susies Poker Run To Benefit Veterans” on Facebook.

Welcome 2024 with a community celebration BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When it comes to celebrating New Year’s Eve, the folks at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elizabethtown like to do things a little differently. “We count down to the new year at 7 p.m., because that’s the time it’s midnight in Letterkenny, Ireland, which is the sister city of Elizabethtown,” said pastor A.J. Domines. “We also raise a lit star on a flagpole. Our claim to fame here is, everywhere else,
they drop something. We do not drop anything. We lift up the star, which is the symbol of Christmas and the Wise Men coming in a few days.” Welcome 2024 will be held in and around the church, 125 E. High St., Elizabethtown, from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31. “We’ll start with a chicken barbecue from Kauffman’s BBQ,” said Phil Clark, a member of the event committee. The meal will be available to eat in or to go, with See Welcome pg 3

ifteen years ago, Tyler Stumpf and his friend Jeff Andrews were sitting around “solving the world’s problems,” Stumpf recalled with a laugh, when they came up with an idea. “We said, ‘Let’s go for a ride on New Year’s Day,’” said the avid motorcycle rider. “A few other people heard about our plans, and we had 11 participants that first year.” The group decided to raise money with the ride, donating the proceeds to the Lebanon VA Medical Center. “I think we might have raised $400 that first year,” Stumpf said. “This event turned into much more than I ever could have expected.” He’s not kidding. Last year’s New Year’s Day ride featured the most participants ever - upward of 500 bikes and 600 people - and raised more than $32,000. So far, the group has donated more than $270,000 to veterans. This year’s ride will take place on
Monday, Jan. 1, with registration beginning at 10 a.m. at the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy. The ride will leave from the Legion at 1 p.m., and participants will follow a 25-mile route along the Susquehanna River, ending at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St. Members of the ladies’ auxiliary will serve breakfast at the Mount Joy Legion before the ride, and a pork and sauerkraut meal will be served at the Elizabethtown Legion at the ride’s conclusion. Fun traditions at the event include Baby New Year, when a participant is chosen for the honor and must attend in a baby costume and sash. “Baby New Year will arrive at the Mount Joy Legion at noon,” Stumpf said, noting that this year’s honoree is Jeff Shultz. At the end of the ride, an auction will be held. “We’ll have items donated by local businesses and individuals,” Stumpf said. “This year is going to be our biggest

“There are so many people who are alone at Christmas, and they don’t have anywhere to go. People don’t have to be a part of the church to come. They’re welcome to sit, have fellowship and enjoy each other’s company. It’s amazing how many people stay and talk and share stories with each other.” The meal will include turkey, gourmet potatoes, stuffing, green beans, cranberry sauce, rolls, gravy and “desserts galore,” Funck said. “It’s worth it to come for the fellowship, but it’s also

so worth it to come for the food, because it’s delicious,” she stated. “That’s a plus.” Along with preparing food, church members work as greeters and servers during the meal. “People can come in, sit down, and we will bring them food, and if they want seconds, they just have to ask for more,” Funck said. “It’s like they’re eating at fancy restaurant. Last year, we served about 450 meals. We’re busy.” The church has offered the meal for more than 25 years, and it’s a way for the congregation to connect with neighbors, said Kendric Bert, who is also helping to organize the event. “It’s a way for us to reach out as a church and give back,” he remarked. “We do things throughout the year for the community, like donate to the food bank, but that’s not very visible. This is a visible way to support our community.” There is no charge for the meal, but people are welcome to bring monetary or food donations for the Mount Joy Food Bank, Bert said. Funck emphasized that the church is welcoming and open to anyone who comes for the meal, noting, “I’ve been doing the Christmas meal for about 21 years. Being here for so many years, I’ve seen people who were nervous or worried about coming in, but then they enjoy the fellowship with people who are in the same situation. There are so many people here to share with and talk to.” Bert agreed, adding, “If someone doesn’t feel comfortable staying, they can get takeout, but if they do want to stay, we have a place for them.” Reservations are requested for the meal and may be made by calling the church office at 717-653-1616 or registering online at https:// crossroadsbic.com/about /christmas-2023. Walk-ins will also be welcome.

Gane added that the church members enjoy organizing the event annually as a way to connect with Elizabethtown-area residents. “It’s a very nice, established community event,” he remarked. “This is what Christ requires of us - to take care of people,” said Steph Heisey, referring to a free community meal that will be offered at Ruhl’s Church. “We help people who are in need when we do this.” The church, located at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, will host a live Nativity and drive-through Christmas meal on Saturday, Dec. 23, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The menu will feature ham, a baked potato, green beans and a dessert. In the past, the church has hosted a Drive to Bethlehem event, but this year, only a Nativity scene will be featured. “People can see Joseph and Mary with the Son of God in a straw-filled manger,” said Kris Gray, who is helping to organize the event. Event committee member Randi Myer will bring a miniature horse named
Jellybean to the Nativity, with the possible addition of other animals. “This will be an opportunity for people to drive up and see what it was like in Bethlehem when baby Jesus was born,” she said. For the first hour of the event, members of the congregation will sing Christmas carols, and people are invited to park their cars and join in. For the second hour, recorded selections of Christmas music will be played. The meal is provided free of charge, although a donation box will be set up on-site for anyone who wants to give. “I hear a lot of neat stories from people when I take their reservations for the meal,” said Barb Dunmire, a member of the event committee. “People are very thankful that we do this. People should leave a message with their name and phone number and the number of meals requested, and organizers ask that people speak slowly and clearly when leaving the information. Last year, The Jess Zimmerman Band received the Album of the Year award for its debut album “Breathe.” This year, in addition to being nominated for multiple awards, the band performed during the ceremony. one of the biggest highlights of the year,” Heitz said. “The Grand Ole Opry is iconic for country music.” The Jess Zimmerman Band performed songs from an album released in May, titled “Be The Light.” “The idea behind ‚ÄòBe The Light’ was putting together something that puts you in a good place when you listen to it,” said Heitz. “It’s bright and bold, and it shines through.” The group began to work on the album at the end of 2022, and it will be submitted for the 2024 Josie Music Awards. The Josie Music Awards specifically highlight independent artists, as in musicians who are not signed to a record label. Without a label, independent artists like The Jess Zimmerman band manage their own recording, producing, touring and marketing. “Breathe” and “Be The Light” were both recorded at Omnisound Studios in Nashville, and Heitz and her bandmates have remained busy with and performing shows throughout the East Coast, Midwest and South. at last year’s Josie Music Awards, the group had opportunities throughout the year to share the stage with artists such as Shania Twain, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band. “It’s been quite a year,” said Heitz. “Winning Album of the Year helped set the tone for 2023. Going into 2024, who knows what’s in store?” Although The Jess Zimmerman Band has multiple gigs booked in other states, the group will perform several shows in Lancaster and York counties in the new year. The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet Thursday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Jeff Larkin, a biology professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, along with three of his graduate students, will present “Ornithology Research Update: Scarlet Tanagers and Ruffed Grouse.” Larkin and the graduate students will report on their research on the decline of ruffed grouse and scarlet tanager. The students’ research studies the causes of decline over a period of decades, methods to gather data, and possible solutions to reverse the decline of these birds in Pennsylvania. Students Jacob Goldman and
Randall Koleck are studying the effects of habitat management on ruffed grouse, including using various technologies to determine the effects of various types of habitats on grouse occupancy. Student Tyler Hodges, specializing in avian ecology, is studying high-quality breeding habitat that supports scarlet tanagers and how forestry management practices affect tanagers both with positive and negative outcomes. A short business meeting will precede the program. The event is free and open to the public. The club will also sponsor four Lancaster County Christmas Bird Counts. Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called
the Christmas Bird Count, with much of the leg work done by volunteers. All levels of birders, including backyard watchers, can help with the citizen science effort. The data collected have been invaluable for studying bird population trends, migration patterns, and conservation policy. Participants will be assigned to a team with leaders who are acquainted with their areas. Backyard birders must register with the appropriate contact person prior to the event to determine if their home is within the count circle. The local events and their contact people are as follows: Sunday, Dec. 17, Solanco, Derek Stoner, 484-7233348 or derekstoner @hotmail.com; Saturday,
Dec. 23, Lancaster, Roger Stoner, 717-393-9030; and Sunday, Dec. 31, Lititz, Ted Nichols, 717-856-3851 or tanicholsii@gmail.com. Additionally, the Christmas Bird Count for Kids will be held at the Lancaster County Central Park on Dec. 23. It is designed to teach children about birding. Participants must register by calling the park at 717-295-2055. For more information, contact John Lahr, 717-205-3030 or johnlahr324@gmail.com. Adults without kids are welcome. For more information on any LCBC events, call 717856-3851 or 717-725-2717 or visit www.lancasterbird club.org or www.facebook. com/lancasterbirdclub.

Attendance is limited, and advance tickets are required by calling 717-733-6600 or visiting https://bit.ly/3SMzBI4. that were made attainable by the sacrifices of others. The Yuletide Tours are historically informed by Historic Rock Ford’s curator, Sarah Alberico, who has researched old newspapers and archives to learn what was customary in the 18th century. “The Yuletide Tours are an opportunity take a little breath after the frantic holiday,” said Sam Slaymaker, Historic Rock Ford’s director. “Enjoy the sights and sounds of a time that was more reflective and more about being with friends and family.” To purchase tickets for the Yuletide Tours, visit https://rockford.yapsody .com.
