A partnership between Lancaster City Alliance and Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County (CAP) has employed city residents in need of work and resulted in the completion of its first project at 602 Saint Joseph St. The project, known as Front STEPS, combines the expertise of both CAP and Lancaster City Alliance to engage the neighborhood and train workers to repair facades on various city streets. The property, formerly a condemned laundromat, received significant work to its Victorianera storefront, including installation of period-appropriate storefront windows, doors, and railings as well as repairs to the crumbling foundation. With these enhancements, the property can now offer neighborhoodserving business opportunities on the ground floor as well as safe and affordable housing on the upper floors. There are nearly 50 façade improvement projects currently in the works, with the goal to complete 65 façade projects by the end of 2020.

On Tuesday, Dec. 31, the community is invited to ring in the new year a few hours early at Welcome 2020, a family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration organized by volunteers from Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 125 E. High St., Elizabethtown, and the Winters Heritage House Museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. The event is set to take place from 3 to 7 p.m. The event will culminate with the annual raising of a lighted star outside of the church at 7 p.m., immediately followed by a professional fireworks display. According to volunteer Phil Clark, the timing is significant because at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time in Elizabethtown, the clock strikes midnight for residents welcoming the new year in Letterkenny, Ireland, which is the sister town of Elizabethtown. Hosting a party earlier in the evening also provides an alternative option for families and anyone who would rather not stay up late for ringing in the new year. “We have an LED light sign with the year under the star, and every year when the star goes up we get a line of people taking pictures with it,” remarked Clark. “That is a neat tradition we didn’t even plan on.” From 3 to 7 p.m., chicken barbecue dinners prepared by Kauffman’s BBQ Chicken will be available to purchase at the church. Meals will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, fruit, and a bottle of water. Advance tickets for the chicken dinners may be purchased at the church or by calling 717-
367-2786. Homemade soup will also be for sale at the church, as well as commemorative bottles of root beer made by Moo-Duck Brewery in Elizabethtown and bottled by church volunteers. Proceeds from the sales of chicken barbecue dinners, soup, and bottled root beer will help to cover the costs of hosting the event. For many years, Christ Lutheran members have sold root beer floats at a stand at the Elizabethtown Fair as a fundraiser, and in recent years proceeds from that effort have helped to fund the New Year’s Eve event. Aside from those food and beverage options, everything at the event is offered free of charge. At Winters Heritage House Museum, people can observe hand-spinning and hearth cooking demonstrations. Children’s activities and crafts will also be
offered. Free activities at the church will include bingo with prizes, games, balloon twisting, face painting, marshmallow roasting, and music provided by a disc jockey. Free hot dogs, popcorn, and hot cocoa will be available. Emergency vehicles including a fire truck, a police car, and an ambulance will also be onsite for people to see. “It’s a very family-friendly and community-oriented event,” said Clark, noting that planning for the annual celebration begins in July. “ We have a really great committee.” The planning committee for Welcome 2020 includes Clark, Pam and Keith Wolgemuth, Vicki Yaider, Pam and Craig Madonna, and Diane Boyd. For more information on Welcome 2020, readers may call 717-367-2786 or visit www.christlutheran-etown.com.

Faulkner Supports Angel Tree Program
Museum Sets Science Week
Faulkner Chevrolet helped spearhead a campaign, alongside Faulkner BMW, in conjunction with The Salvation Army to bring Christmas cheer to 75 children throughout Lancaster County. It was the first collaboration between the two Faulkner dealerships and the local Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program. The Angel Tree Program is an annual event. Children ages of 2 to 18 can request gifts, and the Lancaster community supports the efforts to grant their wishes. Children provide their size for a new jacket and request hats, gloves, and scarves to keep them warm during the winter months. Requested toys include crafts, board games, dolls, stuffed animals, and more. The goal is for donors to give what they are able and bring joy to children during the holiday season. Eileen Culp (left) and Chad Berger of Faulkner Chevrolet stand Faulkner Chevrolet general with presents and clothing collected from Faulkner Chevrolet manager Chad Berger organized and Faulkner BMW employees at The Salvation Army headthe dealerships’ participation in quarters in Lancaster. the project.
The final week of December is the third annual Cool Science Week at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster, from Thursday, Dec. 26, to Tuesday, Dec. 31. The week will feature special self-led and facilitated activities, crafts, and demonstrations exploring simple scientific concepts. Visitors will learn about math, chemistry, physics, engineering, and more. There is no additional cost for
the hands-on experiences during Cool Science Week. In the planetarium, visitors can see a special winterthemed program, “Season of Light,” as well as showings of the 2018 film “The Grinch,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Participants will also find new temporary exhibits on the floor, including “Arctic Animals” and “The Science of a Snowflake.” The North Museum is open

“Age Of Aquarius” Exhibit Slated The AACA Museum Inc., 161 Museum Drive, Hershey, has opened its “Age of Aquarius: Cars of the Counterculture and Beyond” exhibit. The exhibit will remain on display through Sunday, April 26, 2020. “Age of Aquarius” explores the automotive world from approximately 1967 through the early to mid-1970s by showcasing more than 20 vehicles from this era. At that time, powerful engine muscle cars were popular and sported colorful paint and fanciful interiors, but it was also a time of reflection and a time of cultural change with a focus on peace, love, and happiness. The era not only included “flower power” Volkswagen buses and Beetles, but also cars such as an AMC Gremlin with Levi’s denim interior, a Cadillac sporting Gucci upholstery and vehicles with features like fluorescent exteriors named “Plum Crazy,” “Go Mango,” and others. Many automotive manufacturers, both domestic and foreign, created vehicles with distinctive shapes or names or with specific appointments, like paisley vinyl tops, to reflect the changing consumer trends of this era. One vehicle featured in the exhibit is LIGHT, the Woodstock Bus. This 1962 Volkswagen bus features custom-painted artwork created by artist Dr. Robert Hieronimus, who also designed and painted the original bus in See AACA pg 11

Giving to charity is a selfless act that is worthy of recognition. That recognition can come in many forms, and donors should know that even the “tax man” likes to reward men and women who donate to charity. The United States rewards donors with tax credits. The financial services firm H&R Block notes that, in the United States, taxpayers can deduct donations made to qualified charities. Such deductions must be itemized, but they can greatly reduce a person’s taxable income. Laws regarding donations and tax deductions can be difficult to understand, so donors should always discuss their donations with their financial planners or tax preparers before filing their returns. Some general information regarding donations and deductions that can be useful to prospective donors follows. In the United States, donations must go to one of three types of groups in order to qualify for deductions. Donations made to nonprofit religious groups, nonprofit educational groups, and nonprofit charitable groups, which are often referred to as 501(c)(3) organizations, may qualify for deductions. Noncash donations are also eligible for deductions in the United States. In most instances in the United States, charitable organizations must provide donors with certain information in order for donations to be deducted. A receipt that indicates the organization’s name and address and the date and location of the donation must be submitted. In addition, it must include the amount of the donation when donating cash or, in the case of noncash donations, a reasonably detailed description of the items donated. Donating to charity is a selfless endeavor that may lead to rewards when donors file their tax returns.

Beards For Brothers Fundraiser Held Faulkner Chevrolet joined local Lancaster County police departments and first responders in November to support the 2019 Beards for Brothers campaign. The campaign was started by Officer Bill Watt of West Hempfield Township. Each year, officers select a first responder or organization from the community who is currently battling cancer or provides care to those battling cancer. This year, the Beards for Brothers campaign raised money for Police Sgt. Harold E. Gainer Jr., who retired after 25 years of service in East Hempfield Township. He also served two years in the United States Marine Corps, serving his country with distinction fighting in the Vietnam War. In January of this year, he was diagnosed with a form of leukemia. Also supported through the fundraiser was Andrew Etman, an EMT volunteer and firefighter,
was diagnosed over the summer with stage 4 diffused large B-cell nonHodgkins lymphoma. Along with Faulkner Chevrolet staff members, police officers from Akron Borough, Columbia Borough, East Cocalico Township, East Hempfield Township, Elizabethtown Borough, Lititz Borough, Lancaster City, Lancaster County Park Rangers, Manheim Borough, Manor Township, Millersville University, New Holland Borough, Southern Regional, Strasburg Borough, West Hempfield Township, West Lampeter Township and Quarryville Borough along with volunteer firefighters, EMS personnel and dispatchers from Lancaster County, joined together raise funds for Gainer, Etman and A Week Away, a nonprofit organization that provides seven days of rest to families battling a life-threatening illness.
