Milanof-Schock Brings Little Free Library, Story Times To Marietta By Chelsea Peifer
Marietta residents and visitors have a new, indoor Little Free Library to visit and use thanks to the combined efforts of the Milanof-Schock Library and local business owners Steve and Abby Ulrich. Located inside the lobby of First National Escape at 100 W. Market St., Marietta, the Little Free Library will be open to the public during regular business hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The Ulrichs own the 1875 Victorian building, which was the first nationally chartered bank in Lancaster County, and desire for the space to be a community hub. “We want it to be a place for people to congregate,” said Abby. It primarily serves as home of First National Escape, as well as an outdoor ice cream café that is open
during the warmer months. The idea of having a library inside the building had crossed Steve’s and Abby’s minds in the past, so when Milanof-Schock Library board member Stan Tucker stopped in one day and presented the idea of a library-facilitated Little Free Library inside the building, they jumped at the chance. Tucker had been scouting location possibilities for a potential Little Free Library since reaching out to the Marietta and Maytown areas is one goal that the library had set for itself. “It’s been something that’s been cooking at the back of our minds for a while,” shared library director Barbara Basile, noting that the board of trustees recently completed its strategic plan, which specifically included outreach to coverage areas beyond Mount Joy. Miss Jan will offer a new monthly family story time at that location, as well as at the East Donegal Township Municipal Building.

“What I love about ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ is that you can come to this show and just enjoy,” said Heather Grayberg, who will both direct and choreograph the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) winter presentation. “(‘Birdie’ is) super fun, kitschy, loud, bright, and silly in a lot of ways.” “Bye Bye Birdie” is a Tony Award-winning musical that first played on Broadway in 1960. LBC will stage the show in the Good Shepherd Chapel, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Fridays, Jan. 18 and 25, at 7 p.m.; Saturdays, Jan. 19 and 26, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. “Birdie,” which has more than 30 members in the cast, is the story of Conrad Birdie, a singer and teenage heartthrob, played by Brayden Krikke, who is drafted into the Army. His agent, Albert Peterson, played by Richard Thomas, and Peterson’s secretary and love interest, Rosie Alvarez, played by Rachel Wiles, concoct a scheme to turn the sit-

Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within” in” By Chelsea Peifer
Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within” for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the
like we do now,” noted Mimnall. “It will also touch on the Great Depression and how the lack of food (and resources) can change people,” Wright added. Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. History abounds in the cemetery and the town, and according to Mimnall and Wright, while spooky elements are intertwined on the tour, history is indeed the emphasis. The hourlong guided tours will take place on Friday and Saturday

The set will allow for scene changes to remain fluid. “I hope to have no blackouts at all,” said Grayberg, who plans to choreograph set changes. “It will feel like a consistent piece of art.” Grayberg praised the cast members, most of whom are part of the school’s musical theater program. “Our students are now working professionally out in the community, and the caliber of our shows will get better because of that,” said Grayberg. “They are becoming true career professionals.” Tickets to the show may be purchased at www.lbc.edu /events. While Grayberg’s directing vision calls for making the roles more realistic, her plans for the choreography of the show are to make it larger-than-life. Grayberg is also working to emphasize the musical selections. “It will be overdanced,” said Grayberg. “It’s going to be big.” According to Grayberg, the production will challenge student actors in a variety of ways. “The song ‘Put on a Happy Face’ will be explosive with dance,” said the director, who hopes to add some juggling into the number. “Honestly Sincere” will be another standout. “You can’t help but dance and move and groove to it,” said Grayberg, who added that songs from the 1995 film will be included. “They give the character of Rosie a little more dimension,” she said, adding that she hopes audience members will find themselves humming the tunes on the way out. To keep the show moving continuously, the set will be a house that separates and turns around to create different geometric shapes. “It will complement the talent and let the talent be in the

Focusing on the tension between Rosie and Albert’s mother, Mae, played by Rachel Allen, Grayberg also hopes to showcase the role of the young Hispanic woman. “Rosie is extremely Americanized and a strong character. She is very much the progressive woman of that time period. It will be interesting to play

Assistance Mission. Eye care is a pressing need in Afghanistan. To reach the village where the clinic was held, members of the group first flew, then drove, and then walked, packing their equipment on hired horses. Before becoming a nurse, Glen attended Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), where he played volleyball and earned a degree in math. Following graduation from EMU, Glen was not quite sure what he wanted to do next. He worked as the dorm supervisor at LMHS and coached volleyball. Eventually, he decided to become a nurse, completing a Johns Hopkins accelerated course to become a registered nurse in one year. During his adult life, Glen lived in six states, serving people from all walks of life as a registered nurse working at Lancaster Regional Hospital and with the Traveling Nurses Association, which took him to New York City and Oregon. He also worked in a government clinic on a Native American reserve in Supai, Ariz. In December of 2011, LMS began the endowment, which - in honor of Glen’s work overseas is used to provide scholarships for immigrant and refugee students. The fund supports needbased scholarships that enable students to receive an education at LMS. Since it began, the volleyball tournament has raised $50,000 for the fund. Denlinger noted that the tournament, which started with family and friends of Glen, has grown over the years and that last year, a few teams had to be turned away. This year, MCC, which still has a presence in Afghanistan, will have a display at both events that will include photos of Glen and testimonials. Representatives will be with the display to answer questions.

John Denlinger, advancement associate with Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS), feels that the annual volleyball tournament that benefits the Glen D. Lapp Endowment for Student Aid is unique. “We organize the tournament ‘Glen-style,’” said Denlinger. “(Glen Lapp) was so laidback and relaxed.” “Glen-style” means there are no officials. “Everybody calls their own game,” explained Denlinger. “If they touch the net, they make their own call. If it’s out, you make your call. That’s how Glen would have wanted it.” Denlinger added that the Glenstyle play is explained to the teams prior to each tournament. This year’s fundraiser will be held on Saturdays, Jan. 5 and 12, 2019, at Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS), 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The tournament will be divided into two divisions. Division B will play beginning at 9 a.m. on Jan. 5, and Division A will play beginning at noon on Jan. 12. A maximum of 20 teams will play in each division. The tournament is organized by Mark Leaman and Kevin Groff, with help from Glen’s cousin Joel Lapp. Leaman and Groff played volleyball for Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) and were coached by Glen in 1992 and 1993. The initial tournament held in Glen’s honor was organized by his cousin Tim Lapp. Glen was killed on Aug. 5, 2010, when he and nine others were ambushed after holding an eye and dental clinic in a remote area of Afghanistan. Glen, a nurse, traveled to Afghanistan in October 2008 through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in partnership with International

In all of the years that Marcie Bahn has organized the annual Wreaths Across America ceremony at Mount Tunnel Cemetery in Elizabethtown, there were never quite enough wreaths donated to place on all 800 of the veteran graves until this year. “This is our seventh year doing it here, and we have one for every veteran buried here,” shared Bahn with the small crowd gathered under gray, drizzling skies at the cemetery on Dec. 15. National Wreaths Across America Day takes place annually on the second or third Saturday of December at cemeteries throughout the United States, as communities host ceremonies and volunteers lay wreaths on veteran gravesites to remember the fallen and honor those who have served their country. According to www.wreathsacrossamerica.org, the wreath-laying ceremonies take place at more than 1,400 locations across the United States and also abroad. The nonprofit organization that coordinates the yearly
effort was founded by Morrill Worcester, who, upon realizing his Maine-based wreath business had a surplus of wreaths as the 1992 holiday season was winding down, arranged to have the wreaths placed in Arlington National Cemetery in one of the older sections that had reportedly been receiving fewer visitors as time went on. That annual wreath tribute continued quietly until 2005, when a photo of the wreaths at Arlington drew national attention online and sparked requests from people looking to place wreaths at the cemeteries in their hometowns, too. Bahn learned about Wreaths Across America when she was searching for service projects for youth groups in Elizabethtown. “The (ceremony) at Indiantown Gap (National Cemetery) came to my attention,” she recalled. Mount Tunnel Cemetery, located at 1058 S. Market St., Elizabethtown, is the final resting place for 800 veterans who served in conflicts dating back to the Revolutionary War. Businesses, organizations, and
individuals may sponsor wreaths prior to the annual dedication ceremony at www.wreathsacrossamerica.org. Members of Cub Scout Pack 85 from Elizabethtown joined the group of volunteers at Mount Tunnel. “This was our first year here,” said Assistant Cub Master Matt Reigner. “We used to do it at Indiantown Gap, but now that we know about (this location), this will be an annual thing for us.” Following a brief dedication ceremony, which was led by members of the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329 and included remarks from Mayor Chuck Mummert, the Scouts and volunteers followed Bahn’s instructions to walk gently as they scattered across the property to lay fresh balsam wreaths. Volunteers were also encouraged to say the veteran’s name aloud when placing the wreath on the ground. “Every year it’s a different group (of volunteers) that turns out,” stated Bahn. “The children love to put wreaths on the grave markers, and it’s fun to see their excitement when they find (a veteran) they know
or maybe one from the Revolutionary War.” “It’s a meaningful tradition, and it’s a way to support our veterans locally and across the United States and internationally at the same time,” said Bahn, noting that by the time the ceremony began at noon in Elizabethtown, wreaths had already been placed at sites like Arlington and Normandy. Volunteers and financial donations are needed for the annual Wreaths Across America ceremony at Mount Tunnel, and interested individuals may learn more about how to get involved at www.wreathsacrossamerica.org. A new agreement has been set between Elizabethtown College and the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13. Through the agreement, high school students earning a C or better in the Engineering by Design (EbD) program of study can articulate up to three credits at Elizabethtown College. EbD, a three-course pathway in high
school, features Advanced Design Applications, Advanced Technological Applications, and Engineering Design. Additional stipulations are in place, as well. Students must meet admission criteria for entrance into Elizabethtown College and adhere to the admission dates and procedures that apply to all new students at the college. They must
earn a high school diploma and apply within five years of high school graduation to be accepted into Elizabethtown. Upon acceptance, they must enroll as a fulltime student for the subsequent semester or academic year. For more information on the EbD program, readers may contact Curt Funkhouser at 717-947-1422 or curtis_funkhouser@iu13.org.

championship at the Penn State 4-H Achievement Days held at University Park from July 23 to 25. The team placed second at the Keystone International Livestock Exposition on Oct. 5. Individually, Maddie earned fourth, Emma took eighth, and Leah came in 13th. At the Southeast Regional Contest in Raleigh, N.C., on Oct. 27, the team came in fourth place, with Maddie taking sixth and Leah placing ninth. Coached by Adam and Dani Zurin of Mount Joy and Johanna Rohrer of Manheim, the team began holding practices in January 2018 at the Farm and Home Center. Beginning in March, practices went from going over basic information in a classroom setting to visiting local farms for hands-on experience judging real animals. Each student was required to raise funds for the costs involved with traveling to and from competitions and did so by sending letters to family and friends as well as selling baskets at the Elizabethtown Fair and Manheim Farm Show. “We bonded really well as a team, and it was a lot of fun being together,” remarked Emma when reflecting on the group’s success. Emma, the daughter of Greg and Jodi Musser of Elizabethtown, has been a 4-H member for eight years. She is a junior at Elizabethtown Area High School, where she is president of FFA and plays tennis. “It was cool getting to see livestock from different states and getting to
meet people from different states,” said Emma, “and representing Lancaster County and getting to do it all with my sister.” Emma’s sister Maddie has been a 4-H member for nine years and is currently a freshman at Penn State University, where she is studying agricultural business management. Maddie attributed the team’s outstanding year to the coaches, who volunteered countless hours instructing and practicing with the students. They also planned stops at nine farms along the way to the national competition in Louisville for the team to practice judging animals. Jacob Snavely, the son of Jason and Erica Snavely of Manheim, has been a 4-H member for six years. He is a sophomore at Manheim Central High School, where he is actively involved in FFA and started a student livestock judging club. Jacob decided to try out for the Senior Livestock Judging Team after hearing about it at the annual Lancaster County 4-H reorganizational meeting, where volunteers share about the various opportunities for the coming year. The 2019 4-H Livestock Clubs reorganizational meeting is set to take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Students interested in learning more are welcome to attend or to visit https://extension.psu.edu/ programs/4-h/counties/lancaster for more information.

plans to attend Penn State University to major in agricultural science and minor in animal science or agricultural communications. Plus, she plans to get involved in livestock judging at the collegiate level. “I learned I can compete at a higher level just like anyone else can,” said Leah. “It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.” Earlier in the year, Leah set the goal of becoming an All-American, and achieving that was the highlight of her year. DAR To Mark Nation’s Anniversary The Witness Tree Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has announced that official nationwide planning for the 250th anniversary of the United States securing independence has begun with the inaugural meeting of the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission in Philadelphia. Lynn Forney Young, honorary DAR president general, attended the meeting. According to the DAR, Young is one of only 16 private citizens appointed by bipartisan members of Congress to serve as commissioners alongside eight members of Congress and nine federal officials on the commission. The commission, established by Congress in 2016, is facilitating nationwide plans to observe the 250th anniversary of the United States. Leading up to the commemoration, this body will play a central role in shaping the anniversary narrative on a national level. Members of the group will solicit ideas about how
to mark the anniversary, meet to develop a plan, submit recommendations for the consideration of the president and Congress, and assist with the execution of the approved itinerary. The Lancaster County community can get involved in this national commemoration by working with the Witness Tree Chapter to generate ideas about how to celebrate, both locally and nationally. Witness Tree is planning to be involved with the local community’s celebration for the 250th anniversary. To learn more about DAR membership and upcoming events, readers may visit www.pssdar.org/chapter_sites/ witnesstree.php. Membership inquiries and other questions may be directed to Suzanne Whallon at suzanne.whallon @comcast.net or 717-201-6379. For more information on DAR’s involvement with preparations for the 250th anniversary, readers may visit www.dar.org/America250.

lobby following a rowdy countdown led by Father Time. Attendees may also explore the museum and its regular exhibits, which include interactive displays. Advance registration is not necessary. All activities will be included with the cost of general museum admission, which features separate prices for adults, senior citizens, and children ages 5 to 16. Museum admission is free for children age 4 and under. Family rates are also available. Last year’s celebration drew approximately 300 attendees. “Everyone has a great time - they love the music and the games. It’s one big party, and what they love most is that it’s just for kids,” said Krouse. “We do have families come back every year for all of our activities and mostly the balloon drop.” “It’s a great opportunity for families to be together and have fun and celebrate the new year coming in,” Krouse continued. For more information, readers may call the museum at 717-684-8261, ext. 211, or visit www.museumoftime.org.
The Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County (AELC) will hold their next meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road. The program is free and open to the public. In October 2017, a University of Hawaii astronomer captured an interstellar object as it raced through the inner solar system. This started a global observing campaign to study this object, later named Oumuamua, before it vanished from sight. During the meeting, former Sky & Telescope editor-in-chief Robert Naeye will share the story of the first known interstellar object to pass through the solar system. The club also holds monthly observing sessions at a local dark sky site when the weather permits. For more information about AELC, readers may visit www.aelc.us.

“This is a fun event geared toward kids and their families,” said Abby Krouse, museum admissions and store manager. “There are lots of activities, and everyone always enjoys the countdown and balloon drop at 12 o’clock, which for our event is noon (instead of midnight).” Joining in the festivities will be local mascots, including Father Time, who will lead a dance party together with disc jockey Stevie. Children will have the opportunity to make and wear hats crafted out of recycled materials, and a photo booth will be set up for modeling those creations. Columbia Public Library director Lisa Greybill will lead a story time. Additional activities will include a New Year’s trivia game, face painting, and family challenges while racing against the clock. Attendees will also be able to create time capsules to remember 2018, jot down resolutions for 2019 to post on a resolution wall, decorate cookies, and more. The main attraction is the countdown to noon, when about 800 balloons will be dropped from the ceiling of the museum

Little Free Library from pg 1 Basile said that with Marietta being a walking community, installing a Little Free Library seemed like a good fit. The bookshelves are now stocked with books for children and adults, who are welcome to swap in books of their own when they borrow a book. “We hope that then they will tell their friends and that it will also lead people to Milanof-
Schock,” Basile stated. “Literacy is so important, and we want people to have access to materials. Kids who love to read come from homes that have readers.” In addition to the free lending library, Milanof-Schock children’s librarian Miss Jan will host a family story time with stories and activities at the First National Escape in Marietta on the third Monday
of each month at 10:30 a.m., beginning on Jan. 21. Miss Jan will also offer a family story time on the first Monday of each month at 10:30 a.m. at the East Donegal Township Municipal Building, 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta, beginning on Jan. 7. “(Miss Jan) will bring her inimitable style,” said Basile. “Once summer comes, the
schedule (for these new sites) will probably bloom a little more, possibly into the parks.” Registration for both of the new story time offerings is requested and may be completed at www.mslibrary.org or by calling the Milanof-Schock Library at 717-653-1510. The Milanof-Schock Library is located at Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy.

Karen, who never smoked a day in her life, was diagnosed with early stage vocal cancer. She was able to have victory over the first round; never complained or missed a day’s work. Her motto: Unfortunately the cancer is back, and due to some serious delays by her insurance carrier, the tumor grew significantly and the window for surgery has passed. She is faced with being out of work while she undergoes chemotherapy. Our campaign to offset her loss of wages and mounting medical expenses is coming to an end December 31, 2018. At the International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE) 128th annual convention, Dr. Sally Nolt of the Elizabethtown Fair in Elizabethtown was one of five volunteers presented with the Heritage Award. Recipients were nominated by their fairs’ staff members and/or board members. The awards recognize the achievements of outstanding fair volunteers. Each winner received a plaque and $1,000, and each fair that had nominated one of the winners received $500. The nominees were required to have at least 10 years of fair management experience, could receive no more than $2,500 remuneration annually for serving in the position, and were required to be current members of the IAFE. W hen the Elizabethtown Jaycees held the first Elizabethtown Fair in 1973, Nolt was a Jayceette and co-chaired the only food stand at the fair for several years. As the fair grew, she began helping with competitive exhibits in the areas of setup, tear-down, exhibitor registration, and judging. She formally became a member of the fair committee in 1983 when she was elected director and secretary, where she still serves. During the fair, Nolt is on the grounds each day from start to finish. She can be found in the office guiding volunteers, counting ribbons, dealing with daily issues, recording for an auction or contest, or meeting with radio and television personnel. Nolt, who was a teacher for 37 years, can also be seen encouraging exhibitors. In 1990, the Elizabethtown Fair nominated Nolt to serve as director on the board of the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF). She was elected to be one of six directors representing Zone 4 in Pennsylvania and remains in service of that board today. During her time on the board, she served as Zone 4 secretary for four years and then became the chairperson. In 2017, she was elected to serve as vice president of PSACF for a two-year term. She will serve as PSACF president from 2019 to 2020. To learn more about IAFE, readers may visit www.fairsand expos.com or call 800-516-0313.

Dodge Brothers Club Display Set The Mid-Atlantic Region of the Dodge Brothers Club will showcase a display of early vehicles at the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) Museum Inc., 161 Museum Drive, Hershey, through Sunday, April 28, 2019. The display will be open to the public in the Williams-Clyne Gallery. Brothers Horace Elgin Dodge and John Francis Dodge founded Dodge Brothers in the early 1900s, initially as a parts supplier for other Detroit automakers. Dodge Brothers then manufactured vehicles of its own from 1914 to 1938. The new display showcases the diversity of the various body types that were available during these years. Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Winters Heritage House Museum in Elizabethtown will host Welcome 2019, a free community New Year’s Eve event, from 3 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 31. and in recent years proceeds from that effort have helped to fund the New Year’s Eve event. Proceeds from the bottled root beer sales will help to keep future celebrations free for attendees. Clark also hopes to have additional commemorative bottles made to sell at the next Elizabethtown Fair. With four years of successful events in the books and details all lined up for this year, now organizers are simply hoping and praying for good weather. “It was bitter cold last year, but we didn’t cancel,” recalled Clark, estimating that approximately 300 people showed up. “It was surprisingly well-attended for how cold it was.” For more information, readers may call 717-367-2786 or visit www.christlutheran-etown.com.
Columbia Market House To Reopen By Chelsea Peifer
Plans are underway to reopen the Historic Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., Columbia, thanks to a new management agreement between CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health and the Columbia Borough Council, which owns the building. Healthy Columbia, an initiative launched approximately one and a half years ago by CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health, had proposed a partnership with the borough to restore and revitalize the market house and entered into a management agreement with the borough on Nov. 12, according to Philip Goropoulos, president of CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health. Restoring and revitalizing the Columbia Market House fit well with Healthy Columbia’s goal of expanding fresh food access in the area. Goropoulos said that an official reopening date for the market has not been set, but planners are hopeful that the market will be ready to serve the public by the spring or summer of 2019. Proposed renovations for the property include repairs to the brick floor, upgrades to the electrical system and bathrooms, and the addition of a heating and cooling system. Once renovations have been completed, Goropoulos said the space will include anywhere from nine to 20 stands, along with a permanent 40-seat
restaurant space. The design for the restaurant is still being finalized, but Goropoulos said the eatery will aim to be unique in its approach. The market will likely be open two days a week, while the restaurant will be open five days. Hours of operation and types of vendors may be modified to accommodate community interest. Healthy Columbia will release an online survey in the coming months and canvass in the borough in order to gain as much community feedback as possible. Goropoulos emphasized that the goal of the partnership is not for CHI St. Joseph’s Children’s Health to do it all, but for the market to eventually become a thriving, community-led effort once again. A history of the market on www.columbiamarkethouse.com states that the building was originally constructed in the late 1800s with funding by the

For the fifth consecutive year, volunteers from Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Winters Heritage House Museum have put together a fun-filled, family-oriented New Year’s Eve celebration for the community. The event, Welcome 2019, is set to take place from 3 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31. Several new elements have been added for this year’s celebration, but the one that organizers are perhaps the most thrilled about is a professional fireworks display. The fireworks will begin immediately after the raising of a lighted star at 7 p.m. outside of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 125 E. High St., Elizabethtown. By raising the star at 7 p.m., the church is continuing a tradition that Elizabethtown Borough held for many years in conjunction with its sister town of Letterkenny, Ireland. Organizer Phil Clark explained that at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time in Elizabethtown, the clock strikes midnight for residents welcoming the new year in Letterkenny. Plus, hosting a celebration well before midnight gives local families and anyone who would rather not stay up late an alternative option for ringing in the new year. From 3 to 6 p.m., chicken barbecue dinners will be available to purchase at the church. Meals will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, fruit, and a bottle of water. Advance tickets for the chicken dinners may be purchased at the church or by calling
717-367-2786. Homemade soup will also be for sale at the church that evening. Aside from the chicken barbecue and soup, the entire event is free. Children’s activities will be offered at the Winters Heritage House Museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Museum director Nancy Landis said that hearth cooking demonstrations and samples of roast beef, chicken, gingerbread, and whipped cream will be part of the fun, along with hand-spinning demonstrations and a variety of children’s crafts. Free activities at the church will include bingo, balloon twisting, face painting, music provided by a disc jockey, and games led by a local Scout troop. Bingo prizes have been donated by parishioners and local businesses. Free hot dogs, popcorn, and hot cocoa will be available. Emergency vehicles including a fire truck, a police car, and an ambulance will also be on-site for folks to tour. Organizer Vicki Yaider noted that the youth group made luminarias that will be lined up outside to provide extra lighting and ambiance. Weather permitting, a fire pit will be blazing and supplies for s’mores will be on hand. Also new for this year will be commemorative bottles of root beer available for purchase. The 22-ounce bottles will be brewed and bottled by an Elizabethtownbased brewery and will feature a commemorative “Welcome 2019” label. According to Clark, Christ Lutheran members have sold root beer floats at a stand at the Elizabethtown Fair as a fundraiser for more than a dozen years,

municipality, and it began serving as an active community farmers market in 1869. Regular operations ended in 1994, and the market reopened in 2005 before closing again in late December 2017. CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health began operating the Columbia Dental Center, 401 Locust St., in 2016 to serve children and families with or without insurance. Plans were announced in July 2018 for the organization to open the St. John Neumann School for Children and Families in 2020 at the same location. The school will serve children ages six weeks to 5 years, and part of its aim is to increase access to professional and affordable child care in Columbia Borough. The Historic Columbia Market House, which closed at the end of 2017, is now set to reopen by the spring or summer of 2019, under a new management agreement between CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health and Columbia Borough.
