Don’t distract the dog! Service animal etiquette shared BY ANN MEAD ASH

Cost estimates approached half a million dollars for renovation and demolition required to make the building habitable, but Kime was able to work with volunteers to get much of the work done for free. The building has a long histor y in Elizabethtown, including serving as a hotel in the 1800s. In 1922, the Elizabethtown Moose Lodge voted to purchase the hotel, having

It started with a Facebook post that alerted readers as to what to do if approached by a lone dog in a service vest. The post advised following the dog because the canine’s person might be in trouble. While the advice seemed reasonable, suspicion of such posts alerted this feature writer to seek an opinion from the staff of United Disabilities Services (UDS) service dog program. Puppy coordinator Kristy Conrad confirmed that the advice is good. “If a service dog is separated from their person, that should be a reason for concern,” she stated. “If (the dog) turns around to take you, you should follow because the person could be in trouble,” added service dog program manager Lori Breece. These answers led to discussion of general service dog etiquette that respects the dog’s owner or handler - things we should all be aware of when we see a dog working in public. UDS service dogs wear colored vests to alert others to the dog’s working status. According to Conrad, UDS’ service dogs and service dogs in training wear red vests, while ambassador dogs wear blue and facility dogs wear purple. Often service dog vests are printed with words admonishing members of the public not to pet the dog or to ask before interacting. “It should be standard to ask the handler, ‘May I pet your dog?’”

few weeks, the pandemic shut ever ything down. Once work could begin on the building, the cost of materials had skyrocketed. So, the nonprofit pivoted. “The good thing was more housing had opened up locally. More people opened their homes as Airbnbs during the pandemic, and a few new hotels opened, so we decided just to renovate the building and run our ministry out of it,” Kime stated.

When The Marriage Hub bought the building, the former home of the Elizabethtown Moose Lodge, the nonprofit’s leadership had specific plans for the space. “ We work with couples in

crisis at The Marriage Hub, and we offer three-day marriage retreats,” explained executive director Jeff Kime. “We had been struggling to find housing for our couples, who come from all over, so when we purchased this building, we planned to convert it into a boutique hotel with three floors of rooms, conference rooms and offices.” Their timing wasn’t perfect. It was early 2020, and within a

Service dogs from pg 1 stated UDS ser vice dog trainer Susan Vollmar. “It should always be the person (you engage) first, and not the dog,” added Breece. Vollmar went further, noting, “The public should not be soliciting the dog’s attention (in any way),” she said. “Don’t make noises. Don’t talk. Don’t look. Don’t touch.” The reasons behind such warnings go straight to the dog’s purpose in serving its person. “What if the dog is doing something for their person?” pointed out Breece, who noted that the dog may be focused on retrieving anything from a cane to a credit card from a wallet. “The task the dog is doing is important to the person’s independence,” she said. “Just don’t distract the dog.” Conrad suggested thinking of the dog in the same way one would any other a s s i s t i ve d e v i ce . “ Yo u wouldn’t hinder someone using their wheelchair or cane,” she stated.

Breece stated that the same advice holds for service dogs in training. “Out of respect for the handler, please ask,” she said. “Maybe they are doing some work or training, and if you try to play with the dog, you distract the dog.” Breece made it clear that not all disabilities are readily apparent. “Don’t assume because you can’t see the disability that the person doesn’t have one,” she said, noting that UDS has clients with post-traumatic stress

disorder (PTSD), who really need their service dogs. “PTSD is a medical diagnosis a service dog can assist with,” she said, noting that one client almost gave up using a dog because of comments made to him about not needing one. Instead, he persevered and has become an advocate for the program. Individuals wishing to lear n more may email lorig@udservices.org, call 717-715-8753, or visit https://udservices.org.

When the Moose organization moved to its current located on Maytown Road in 2019, the building was in need of repair and much of the lower level had been damaged by flooding over the years. “We had a lot of work to do when we came in,” Kime noted, adding that the team ripped up carpets, tore out walls and replaced ceiling tiles throughout the site. The movie theater was transformed into an event space, featuring a stateof-the-art projection and sound system. Some original features of the building, including art-deco light fixtures in the theater space, were restored, and fundraising is currently underway to restore the 1939 theater marquee on the front of the building, with a few updates. The word “Moose” will be replaced by “The Elizabeth” (named for an Elizabeth who ran the original hotel), and the sign will feature digital messaging. On Oct. 22, L ancaster-based music group The Jess Zimmerman Band won the Country Rock Group of the Year award at the ninth annual Josie Music Awards in Nashville. The Jess Zimmerman Band is led by Jess Heitz, who is accompanied by guitarist Joe Barszowski, bassist John Knobler and drummer Joe Mattis. This is the second year the outfit has been nominated for awards at the ceremony, which was hosted at the famous American country music venue the Grand Ole Opry. Last year, The Jess Zimmerman Band received the Album of the Year award for its debut album “Breathe.” This year, in addition to being nominated for multiple awards, the band performed during the ceremony. Out of nearly 1,000 applicants, only 10 artists were selected to play at the event. “It was really one of the biggest highlights of the year,” Heitz said. “The Grand Ole Opry is iconic for country music.” The Jess Zimmerman Band

performed songs from an album released in May, titled “Be The Light.” “The idea behind ‘Be The Light’ was putting together something that puts you in a good place when you listen to it,” said Heitz. “It’s bright and bold, and it shines through.” The group began to work on the album at the end of 2022, and it will be submitted for the 2024 Josie Music Awards. The Josie Music Awards specifically highlight independent artists, as in musicians who are not signed to a record label. Without a label, independent artists like The Jess Zimmerman band manage their own re c o rd i n g , p ro d u c i n g , touring and marketing. “Breathe ” and “Be T he Light” were both recorded at Omnisound Studios in Nashville, and Heitz and her bandmates have remained busy with and performing shows throug hout the East Coast, Midwest and South. Following The Jess Zimmerman Band’s success at last year’s Josie Music Awards, the group had opportunities throughout

the year to share the stage with artists such as Shania Twain, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band. “It’s been quite a year,” said Heitz. “ Winning Album of the Year helped set the tone for 2023. Going into 2024, who knows what’s in store?”

Although The Jess Zimmerman Band has multiple gigs booked in other states, the group will perform several shows in Lancaster and York counties in the new year. To purchase tickets or listen to The Jess Zimmerman Band online, visit http://www.jzband.org/.

Scarves from pg 5 workshop wraps up at 4 p.m. will be sewn off-site, and the participant may pick up the completed scarf at Kindred Collections. Each scarf is made from upc ycled clothing purchased at thrift stores or donated by individuals and organizations. “So much clothing is wasted in our country, but this gives those shirts, skirts and sweaters new life and an opportunity to make a difference,” Peifer said. The fabric is cut into patterns by

volunteers, who also create the scarves. The finished products are sold in local shops and online to benefit Eden House and House of Refuge in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Both homes provide sanctuary for at-risk girls ages 5 to 17, offering a safe place to live, education, food, Bible teaching and more. Over the years, Binding Love has sent more than $40,000 to the homes, supporting hundreds of girls. “None of our volunteers re ce i v e a ny payment for their services, e ve n me a s the founder,” P e i f e r explained. “This has always been and always will be about making a difference and bringing hope to the girls in Participants will make an infinity scarf at a Thailand.” Binding Love workshop. Fallen Officers’ Benefit Hockey Game set The Cops for K .O.P.S. annual Fallen Officers’ Benefit Hockey Game will take place on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024, at Giant Center, 550 W. Hersheypark Drive, Hershey. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. The opening ceremonies will begin at 12:45 p.m., with the puck drop at 1 p.m. Since 2005, COPS for K.O.P.S. (Keep Our Pipers Silent) has been committed to supporting the families of Pennsylvania law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty, particularly the educational needs of their children. The annual benefit hockey game raises funds for COPS for K.O.P.S.’ mission and memorializes fallen officers. At the upcoming game, teams of active duty and retired law enforcement officers from o r g a n i z at i o n s s u c h a s the Pennsylvania State Police, Philadelphia Police Department, Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and local municipal police departments will face off. The

event will also include giveaway drawings and games. The family-friendly hockey game is COPS for K.O.P.S.’ largest fundraiser, with this year’s fundraising goal set at $50,000. In previous years, more than 1,000 family members and friends, along with media personnel, have attended. Following the game, an after party will be held at the Hershey Italian Lodge, 128 Hillcrest Road, Hershey. Community members are invited to join family members of the memorialized officers and people who played in the hockey game for a full meal, beer and wine, beverages, DJ entertainment, giveaway draw ings and a silent auction. Tickets for the hockey game may be purchased at the door. There is a separate fee and ticket for the after party. Emergency shelter to expand capacity The City of Lancaster, Lancaster County Food Hub, Lancaster County Housing & Redevelopment Authority, and Lancaster County Homelessness Coalition have announced that 80 emergency shelter beds will be made available for the winter season through Sunday, March 31. The Lancaster County Food Hub has committed to providing 40 additional emergency shelter beds, for a total of 80 beds, and is working to secure all necessary resources to increase capacity. Currently, the Food Hub’s low-barrier shelter offers 40 beds. Additional beds will made available as soon as staff members can be recruited. Additional financial resources are needed to ensure the expansion in shelter capacity. Community members may donate to the Lancaster County Homelessness and Affordable Housing Fund at www.lancfound.org/ fund/lancaster- county -homelessness-and -affordable-housing-fund.

The low-barrier shelter previously operated at Ebenezer Baptist Church and was closed on Nov. 15 due to a boiler failure. Through a community effort, individuals experiencing homelessness were moved to a temporary space in less than 24 hours. Additionally, the Food Hub is overseeing a portable toilet at the rear of the shelter for public use to fill the gap in overnight restroom accessibility in the downtown core.

School aids local families The Bear Creek School recently held giving tree and holiday food drive campaigns with the aim of bringing joy to 48 local families facing challenges. The giving tree initiative involved collaboration among members of the school’s faculty, staff and PTO, along with representatives of the Northwest Regional Police Department and St. Peter Church in Elizabethtown. Together, they provided gifts and support to families facing challenges during the holidays. S i m u l t a n e o u s l y, t h e student-led food collection

before the holiday break yielded 1,547 donated food items. These contributions were distributed to families in need. The giving tree and holiday food drive programs aligned with the district’s benefits-based accountability initiative’s core pillar of Community Connections, exemplifying the school’s commitment to positively impacting local communities. These endeavors sought not only to foster joy but also to strengthen the sense of unity and compassion within Bear Creek School and the surrounding communities.
