“Sometimes, it’s just nice to talk to someone in a place that’s safe and loving and encouraging,” said Dolores Reidenbach, counselor and founder of Jewel David Ministries in Elizabethtown. “It’s nice to share what you’re feeling with somebody else.”

That’s the goal of Just 2 Talk Teen Group, sponsored by Mental

Health America. The group will begin meeting on Monday, Jan. 23.

Meetings will be held every Monday through Feb. 27 in the training room at Community Place on Washington, 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown. Food and drinks will be served at 3:30 p.m., and the group will be held from 4 to 5 p.m.

“This is not group therapy,” Reidenbach explained. “It’s just an opportunity for teens to get together

and talk. It’s really a support group, but we’re not using those words because sometimes that has a negative connotation.”

The program will be loosely structured, with Reidenbach facilitating conversations that are healthy and solutions oriented. “It’s really just kind of open,” she shared. “We don’t know what the teens will want to talk about. I will provide some structurehow to problem solve, how to have

hard conversations, what we need to move past the problem, self-care and so on. We’ll talk about the good things they are doing for others, what nice things they are hoping someone would do for them and why.”

Reidenbach was approached by Mental Health America, a national nonprofit, to start the group. “We had some discussion about what this should look like. Groups like this are out there in other places. The idea is just to open the door, invite kids to stop by for a slice of pizza and talk about what’s happening in their lives,” she commented.

Reidenbach also hopes the group will help teens sift through what they might be seeing on social media or elsewhere online. “Overall, there’s a lot of information out there that teens have access to,” she said. “ Without some guidance, this information may not lead them to improve their mental health. There’s very little talk on mental wellnesswhat is the strategy for being mentally well? There are lots of conversations on physical wellness, but what about mental wellness?”

She also noted that the group will help teens with life skills, including decision making, how to self-advocate and how to have constructive conversations. It’s targeted for students who live in the Elizabethtown Area School District, but it’s open to anyone in high school.

Mental Health America has provided funding to continue the program after its initial six-week run if it is well received, Reidenbach said. She is optimistic that teens will get a lot out of the program. “Knowing they are not the only one struggling with something can be so helpful,” she remarked. “It’s amazing how we can encourage each other.”

Preregistration is required for Just 2 Talk Teen Group. To register, visit https://tinyurl.com/4m8zu5vm.

Six-year-old Kalvin Swartzendruber got the surprise of his life in December when he was granted his wish to visit Disneyland.

Members of Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley were on-site at the Manheim Auto Auction to reveal that Kalvin’s wish had been granted through the organization.

“It was absolutely amazing,” said Kalvin’s mom, Meredith Swartzendruber. “At first, he said, ‘They just told me what I’m wishing for,’ and we said, ‘No, honey, you’re getting your wish.’ His brother caught on faster and said, ‘We’re going to Disneyland!’” Kalvin and his 10-year-old brother, Ayden, attended the wish reveal with their mom and their dad, Adam.

Kalvin was born with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, a congenital growth disorder. He has also battled cancer, but he is

You’re invited to get creative during a two-day event at Donegal High School. Crop and Craft will be held from 3 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, in the high school cafeteria, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. The event is an opportunity for crafters to work on their projects in a fun, relaxing environment, said Susan Heydt, who is organizing the event. Proceeds from the Crop and Craft will benefit scholarships to attend Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) competitions and Kiwanis Key Leader Camp.

“Scrapbookers, artists, fiber artists and crafters are invited to join in the fun of this time of camaraderie with others sharing similar hobbies,” stated Heydt, who is the Key Club adviser at the high school. “There is plenty of space to spread out, and we have people who use the tables to lay out big fiber pieces they’re working on.”

Participants will be able to work on anything they bring with them, and members of Donegal’s National Art Honor Society (NAHS) will host breakout sessions throughout the event, featuring demonstrations on a variety of art mediums.

“The breakout sessions are a good opportunity to learn about something maybe you haven’t seen or heard of before,” said senior Isabelle

Morrison, president of the NAHS, who will run one of the sessions.

Senior Madison Arroyo, president of Donegal’s Key Club, noted that students will help participants carry in supplies and get set up. She said she was surprised at how quiet the event was last time she attended. “Everyone is so focused on their projects,” she noted. “It’s just a relaxed, welcoming environment.”

Members of FBLA are taking care of marketing the

event, said freshman Abbie W aldron, club treasurer. “ We’re handling the advertising, and we made the registration form and we’re tracking registration payments,” she stated. FBLA members participate in competitions throughout the year, which will be funded using proceeds from the Crop and Craft.

Freshman Sami Ankeny will compete in financial math in an upcoming event, and freshman Molly O’Brien will participate in a hospitality

management competition later this month.

Heydt got the idea for Crop and Craft after hearing about a similar event organized annually by a sorority at Millersville University. Crop and Craft events were held in 2019 and 2020, and this year will mark the event’s return after a two-year absence during the pandemic.

Pizza and salad will be served Friday night, and coffee will be available Saturday

2022, Lancaster Landfill, LLC. will file an Application for a Major Permit Modification (Application) with the Southcentral Regional office of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP). This Application is for the Lancaster Landfill, located in Mount Joy Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania is being submitted to allow the use of the Closure Turf® system as an alternate to the currently permitted geosynthetic final cover system at the facility. As the site has exhausted all on-site soils, currently all operational, construction and closure soils need to be imported to the site for use. Use of the ClosureTurf® system will greatly reduce the required soil volume for landfill closure while providing an effective, durable and low-maintenance final cover. This system is currently approved for use at several landfill facilities throughout the Commonwealth. There are no changes to the approved operating hours or the amount of waste being accepted at the facility as part of this application.

Copies of the Application are available for review and copying at the PADEP Southcentral Regional office, 909 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania 17110, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. An appointment must be made with the Southcentral Regional office to review the Application. A fee for copying may be charged by PADEP. Copies of the application will also be submitted to Mount Joy Township, Lancaster County, the Lancaster County Health Department, and the Lancaster County Planning Commission. The host municipality and county may submit recommendations for permit conditions, revisions, application approval or disapproval, and other comments to PADEP within sixty (60) days of their receipt of the application. PADEP will also accept and consider comments from the public during the permit review period. Comments should be sent to the Regional Solid Waste Manager, PADEP Southcentral Regional Office, 909 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania 17110.

now cancer-free. “Throughout his treatment, we would watch Disney (theme park) videos,” Meredith recalled. “They helped distract him

from things that were going on around him.” One ride he particularly loved was the Incredicoaster, which is only in Disney California Adventure

Park, part of Disneyland. “He would say, ‘I want to go on this ride. I want to go to California Disney.’ It became a nice little mental distraction for him,” Meredith noted. The family took the trip to California in mid-December.

The Swartzendrubers moved to Elizabethtown in August of 2021. Kalvin was already undergoing routine ultrasounds because of his syndrome, and during one, doctors discovered a mass on his kidney. Within two weeks, Kalvin began chemotherapy, enduring 13 rounds and experiencing a rare side effect of the treatment that affected his liver and required hospitalization. Part of his kidney was also removed during treatment.

The current first-grader was homebound from school for three months during treatment, but kept a positive attitude, Meredith said. “He’s looking forward to playing T-ball this spring,” she shared.

“He loves dancing. I’ll put on music, and he’ll just dance.”

Kalvin’s wish was revealed at a kickoff planning meeting for the 2023 Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy. The convoy is a major fundraiser for the organization, generating more than $500,000 last year, with proceeds used to grant wishes like Kalvin’s.

When driving through eastern Lancaster County on Lincoln Highway, you might not notice a small, yellow building between Ronks and Soudersburg. Although the unassuming structure could pass as a quaint residence, within its walls resides a unique collection of history that has been assembled by its curator, Stephen Meyers.

Bible History Exhibits, located at 2827 East Lincoln Highway in Ronks, boasts a display of archaeological replicas and information that is related to the Bible. The exhibit begins with the book of Genesis and follows the Bible’s timeline through the book of Revelation; replicas of tablets, statues, weapons and scrolls that reference the events of the Bible are placed in chronological order in the display.

“Most people may be reading the Bible but may not know that there’s a lot of archaeology and discoveries that directly relate to it,” Meyers said.

Each replica refers to civilizations or events that existed at the same time as biblical characters if it does not refer to these characters directly. The beginning of the exhibit displays replicas of tablets that refer to the epic of Gilgamesh, the Great Flood and the Tower of

Babel. Archaeological discoveries made in Egypt populate the section of the exhibit that documents the book of Exodus, followed by replicas of artifacts from Israel, Assyria, Babylon, Persia and Greece in biblical times.

“The real artifacts are in museums around the world,” Meyers said. “I’ve made replicas and brought them together so that you don’t have to travel to the other side of the globe to see everything.” Meyers occasionally acquires replicas from other people, but more often he creates the replicas himself. He stays up to date on the latest news of archeological discoveries so that he can recreate them and

add them to the exhibit. Each segment of the exhibit is also accompanied by informational pieces that detail how some of the artifacts were created or used. One such educational display shows how ancient peoples tanned leather and treated papyrus to fashion into scrolls.

In addition to the artifacts and informational displays, Bible History Exhibits is peppered with photographs that Meyers took himself while traveling through the Middle East. When he is not traveling to the ancient world, Meyers resides in Philadelphia, where

he moved from Ohio to attend Westminster Theological Seminary. He opened Bible History Exhibits about eight years ago and stays in Lancaster while the museum is open.

Meyers has also written several booklets on various historical topics, which he sells online and at the exhibit. Almost every item in the exhibit is for sale, and the profits from their sales help to keep the exhibit open. Bible History Exhibits operates under The Institute for Biblical and Scientific Studies, a nonprofit organization.

Lancaster Band Wins Album Of The Year

On Oct. 22, Lancasterbased music group The Jess Zimmerman Band won the Album of the Year award at the eighth annual Josie Music Awards in Nashville. The band’s album “Breathe” garnered the award in the country rock and Southern rock category, and the band itself was also nominated for awards in four other categories: Music Video of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Fan’s Choice Award and Rock Vocalist of the Year. The Jess Zimmerman Band comprises frontwoman Jess Heitz, guitarist Joe Barszowski, bassist John Knobler and drummer Joe Mattis, and has concerts scheduled for the spring in Holtwood and Millersville.

The awards ceremony was hosted at the Grand Ole Opry, a nationally known American country music venue that has been in operation for almost a century. “I was blown away that we were nominated in five categories,” Heitz said. “To win Album of the Year in such an iconic place was incredible.”

Each year, the Josie Music Awards recognize specifically independent artists, meaning they aren’t signed to a record label, so they handle things like recording, producing, touring and marketing themselves. Although well-traveled in the Lancaster and greater Pennsylvania country music scene, The Jess Zimmerman Band’s success as an independent group has also

taken it across the East Coast, Midwest and South.

“W hen it comes to ‘Breathe,’ the album itself was a monumental step for us as a band,” Heitz said. “It was also a big step for me emotionally and physically.” The Jess Zimmerman Band independently released “Breathe” in May 2021, following a flurry of recording sessions. The band members stayed in Nashville f or five days, during which they recorded and mixed each of the 11 songs on the record. “It was a lot of work from start to finish. Sometimes we would be at the studio from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. working on these songs,” Heitz said.

“Breathe” is The Jess Zimmerman Band’s first full-length album.

Heitz grew up on a dairy farm in Ephrata and currently lives in Mount Joy with her husband. Her musical career began at a young age; she would perform at local fairs, talent shows, church services and school events growing up.

“Everyone has a dream when it comes to music, but if I were able to go back and tell my younger self that it would be flourishing, I don’t think she’d believe me,” said Heitz.

The Jess Zimmerman Band has multiple shows in Lancaster approaching after the new year: on Friday, Jan. 13, the group will perform at Phantom Power, 121 W. Frederick St., Millersville; on Friday, Feb. 10, it will take the stage at Mickey’s Black Box, 101 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz; and on Friday, March 24, it will perform at Southern Lancaster County Farmer-Sportsmen’s Association, 573 Hilldale Road, Holtwood. “There’s an amazing music scene in central Pennsylvania, and we hope to connect with people all over, too,” Heitz said. “Our biggest goal is to reach and impact people in whatever way we can. That’s what ‘Breathe’ was for me.”
