is a fun way to introduce all the great food and beverages available in the greater Elizabethtown area,” said Kevin Engle, describing the annual Taste of Western Lancaster County. The event will be held on Friday, Feb. 3, from 4:30 to 9 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St.

It will feature more than 20 vendors stationed throughout the building’s three floors, said the library’s Brandon Allen, who is cochairing the event with Engle. “You’ll come in and pick up a bag of goodies, and then you’re released out into the library to enjoy samples of food and drink, listen to some great music and have fun,” he stated.

Although the event is called the “Taste of Western Lancaster County,” it’s not limited to the Elizabethtown area, Engle explained. “The event is named for the geographic location of the library - it’s in western Lancaster County - but it’s open to people and vendors from anywhere,” he shared. “We draw from all over the county and this region.”

Members of the public are invited to vote for their favorite participants,

prizes will be awarded based on the most votes received for best entree, best appetizer, best dessert,

beverage and best in show. The

receive a plaque to display at their establishment and will

be recognized at a banquet on a future date.

The Taste is co-hosted by the library and the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown, with proceeds used to support both organizations. “Rotary will use the money both locally and globally,” said Engle, who is representing the club. “Our local projects include supporting ECHOS, our schools, Boy Scout troops and anywhere there is a need in the community. We also support programs nationally and internationally. We support sustainable service projects.”

Allen said the library will use proceeds to continue providing services and programming. “Libraries in Pennsylvania are unique, because we don’t receive as much funding from the government as libraries in other states do,” he remarked. “ We’ll use the proceeds from this event to keep our doors open, to

provide educational programming for kids and to provide materials. We’re a nonprofit that is mostly self-funded.” This is the library’s biggest fundraiser of the year, Allen said, noting that it’s been held for 15 years.

The Taste would not be possible without the support of sponsors, including major sponsor White Family Dental, Engle stated. “Come out and support a fantastic event with food, beverages, friends and fellowship,” he said. “It’s always well attended, and it’s always a great time.”

A Taste of Western Lancaster County is open to anyone age 21 and older. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Elizabethtown Coffee Company, located within the library, or by searching f or “Taste of Western Lancaster County” at www.eventbrite.com.

“I think one of the things a lot of our clients are facing, in addition to the physical hardship of needing home repairs, is loneliness,” Cotton pointed out, adding that many clients are widowed people or single mothers. “(They are) people who need support in general,” said Cotton. “For that reason, the organization’s volunteer application asks candidates to rate their skill levels, but Cotton commented that this is not meant to exclude anyone. “It just

Like many 8-year-olds, Viola Rothacker loves animals. She even has a favorite pet, but it’s not furry or fourlegged. It’s a Mexican kingsnake named Dandelion. She’s completely comfortable around snakes, lizards, turtles and other creatures, handling them like a pro, because loving reptiles is in her DNA. Her father, Jesse Rothacker, operates Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary out of his home in Manheim.

Jesse started Forgotten Friend in 2004. “I knew there were a lot of people looking for a place to rehome reptiles,” he said, noting that many people underestimate how large reptiles will grow as well as their long lifespan. He realized that places like Humane Pennsylvania couldn’t easily take in reptiles since their shelters were already full of cats and dogs. “I know people love reptiles, and I knew there was a need for a rescue,”

Jesse recalled. “I thought, ‘I can start one.’”

Jesse, who grew up in southern California but moved to Lititz as a teen, has been a lifelong reptile fan. “In the ’90s as a teenager, I got my first pet snake, Leon,” he stated. “I loved him, and I took him everywhere.” In fact, he even got a detention at Warwick High School, where he graduated in the Class of 2000, for bringing Leon to school without permission.

In the early days of Forgotten Friend, he took in every reptile he could, with the hopes of rehoming them all. As the rescue grew, he shifted gears to refer people or provide information on their reptile, although he still takes in some animals. His business, now a nonprofit, receives most of its funding from the live shows Jesse offers - often accompanied by Viola and her brother, Kenny, 12 - at local schools, churches, libraries and birthday parties. “We did 275 live shows this past year,”

Jesse said. Although both kids help with the shows, and Jesse’s wife, Kim, is a patient supporter of Jesse’s passion, it’s Viola who has really blossomed in the business, Jesse said.

“She shares my view on reptiles,” he stated. “Ever since I was little, if I saw a reptile, I wanted to get closer.”

By age 1, Viola was making television appearances with her dad, and he proudly shows off a video of Viola at

More than three years ago, Jason and Katherine Horst, owners of Horst Arts in Manheim, were working out of their home when they came up with an idea. “We were watching ‘The Great British Baking Show’ and decided to try a similar craft-based version with us and our two young children,” Jason recalled. “It was a lot of fun, and we tried to figure out how to host a full-fledged event out of our home with friends.”

Although that idea never came to fruition, just a few months later, the couple opened its business at 17 N. Main St., Manheim, and the location became the perfect venue to host The Great Create. The first event was held in January of 2020. The next Great Create will be held on Sunday, Jan. 22, at 3 p.m.

As Jason explained, the event is an opportunity to indulge in creativity, get competitive and have fun. “This is a two-hour event that includes three rounds of art-and-craft-based competition,” he shared. “The first round is fairly simple and very crafty. The second challenge involves cut paper and is a bit more technical. The third challenge is more freeform and involves a canvas and collage.”

Instructions and guidance are provided at the beginning of each challenge, and no artistic knowledge or experience is required to participate. “A winner is chosen for each round, and at the end, an overall winner is chosen and receives a prize,” Jason stated.

The most recent Great Create was held in March of 2022, when participants were sets of mothers and daughters who were all friends, Jason said.

“When friends do this event together, there’s always more smack talk and that’s a lot of fun,” he remarked. “In fact, friendly ribbing is encouraged.”

He noted that artistic skill is not required to enjoy The Great Create. “This event is for people who watch reality television competitions and think it would be fun to experience a similar event in a fun setting,”

he said. “While it is a competition, that’s actually secondary. It’s about enjoying a challenge with friends or making friends while exercising your creative muscles.”

For more information or to purchase tickets for The Great Create, visit https://horstarts .com or stop by the studio. The deadline for registration is Saturday, Jan. 21.

Grants are available to improve the bicycling experience in Lancaster County, including items like bicycle repair stations, signs, and markings; for repair or maintenance of bicycling features like trails and covered bridges; for bicyclists’ rights and safety advocacy; and to promote bicycling in the county.

Applications are due by Tuesday, Jan. 31. To learn more and apply, visit www.lancasterbikeclub.net.

Bears Trounce Lebanon Cedars on the Mats

Thanks to the balmy weather currently hanging around Central Pennsylvania it may not feel like winter but rest assured, it is. That means the high school sports scene moves inside to gymnasiums, natatoriums, bowling alleys and gun ranges.

For the wrestling team the 2022-2023 season has seen five regular dual meets as well as trips to Donegal and Governor Mifflin for holiday tournaments held at each school.

The Bears rock a 4-1 mark in those dual matches with the lone setback coming via a 4527 final in a season opening loss to Bishop McDevitt on December 10th. E-town followed with wins over Lampeter-Strasburg (56-12), Garden Spot (44-30), Cocalico (48-23) and most recently Lebanon.

The 66-12 win over the Cedars went down January 4th with E-town claiming five wins and nearly half of their points via forfeits. Dakota Petrosky (133), Kai Laszakovits (139), Nathan Thomas (145), Devin Forney (172) and Collin Huggins (189) enjoyed those easy wins.

Add in pinfall wins by Conner Miller (107), Hayden Best (114), Francis Burke (121), Austin Reitmeyer (127), Ryan

Findley (152) and Brad Candy (215) as well as losses at 160 and 285 and you end up with Elizabethtown’s 66-12 victory.

The Bears have enjoyed success in those holiday tournaments, nabbing silver at the Donegal tournament on December 17th and bronze at the Governor Mifflin Holiday Tournament on December 29th with a combined 14 podium trips. Seven of those trips came in the Donegal Holiday Tournament with Findlay capturing gold at 152. Aiden Robinson enjoyed the top podium finish at the Governor Mifflin tournament, taking silver at 160.

BOWLING

The bowling team opened their 2022-2023 season on the wrong side of a 4-3 final, dropping the match to Penn Manor. The Bears rebounded nicely with wins over Conestoga Valley, Lebanon, Hempfield, Warwick, Northern Lebanon and Cedar Crest leaving E-town with a 39-11 record.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

On the hardwood, the

boys’ basketball team opened with a title run at the Boiling Springs Tip-Off Tournament, topping Boiling Springs and New Oxford to earn the title. The Bears hit a rough patch from there, dropping games to Dallastown, Manheim Township, Lampeter-Strasburg and Manheim Central to slip to 2-4. Wins over Penn Manor and Garden Spot pushed Elizabethtown back

to even, but it was temporary. Losses to Hempfield and Central York in Hempfield’s Holiday Tournament coupled with a 61-47 setback to Warwick on January 3rd, have the Bears sitting at 4-7 overall and 2-1 in L-L action. Brenden Lehman (12 points) and Brandon Andrews (11 points) were the lone Bears in double digits opposite Warwick.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

The Lady Bears have found

the going rough with a season opening win over Donegal coupled with a 49-26 victory over Garden Spot as the only wins, leaving Elizabethtown 2-8 overall and 1-2 in L-L play.

E-town followed the win over Donegal with a loss to Red Land in the championship game of their own tip-off tourney with Dallastown, Manheim Township, Manheim Central, and Penn Manor all picking up wins

over the Lady Bears. Elizabethtown broke up their five-game slide with the victory over Garden Spot on December 21st but fell right back down with losses to Lower Dauphin and Harrisburg in the LD Holiday Tournament.

The Lady Bears returned to the L-L to kick off 2023, falling to Warwick on the 3rd by a 40-16 final. The scoring was split between three players with Taryn Hummer netting a team high eight. Chloe Wilkinson added seven points while Jadyn Lloyd accounted for the final point.

SWIMMING

The Elizabethtown swimming teams stumbled out of the gate with the boys falling to Warwick 127-49 while the girls dropped a 123-60 final. Both sides rebounded nicely with the boys’ team blowing by McCaskey 128-26 and Lower Dauphin 122-46 with the Lady Bears posting a 11947 win over McCaskey and a 123-46 win over Lower Dauphin.

RIFLE

The rifle team sits at 2-2 heading into the 2023 stretch of their schedule. The Bears opened with wins over Governor Mifflin (494-490) and Ephrata (496-494) but dropped matches to Manheim Central (495-494) and Garden Spot (494-492).

givesus a better idea where we can plug people in, so they can feel useful,” he explained. The application helps Servants Inc. put teams together and pair willing learners with those who have the ability to teach. There’s a need for skilled workers as well. “We have some intense projects that involve plumbing and framing,” Cotton said.

Servants Inc., which now has a full-time project manager in Lancaster County, is mostly active in the ELANCO area as well as Columbia and Marietta.

During the week, Thursday is the designated volunteer workday, but Saturdays are scheduled to accommodate working volunteers and students. Right now, volunteers are needed as the organization’s client list is growing. “It’s a delicate balance,” said Cotton of expanding the client and volunteer lists at the same time.

Since opening a Lancaster County branch, a few years ago, the nonprofit has formed a partnership with CrossNet Ministries in New Holland. “(CrossNet) does intake applications … for the services we provide,” said Cotton.

Marilyn Guzmán, social services program manager with CrossNet, reported that one family feared losing its home due the building’s condition. “We prayed, and God sent us a miracle in the form of men and women who work with and volunteer with Servants,” family members told Guzmán, noting that the volunteers were kind and understanding. “Just knowing we now have a safe home helps us sleep better at night, they told her.

Servants Inc. has also partnered with ELANCO Connect, which includes several greater Bowmansville area churches. Servants Inc. is hoping to provide a local half-week work

camp experience during the summer months. The organization has also become involved in the Pequea Valley School District First Choice Discovery Program, a work-based program offering career exploration and mentoring to every sophomore, to introduce students to developing home repair skills.

The organization, which has branches in York and Adams counties, completed more than 110 projects and had more than 10,000 volunteer hours total in 2022. Servants Inc. also sends recovery teams to areas of the U.S. hit by disasters as well as organizing international missions teams. Those who wish to volunteer may visit www.servants.org and click on the “Volunteer” tab or call 717-378-0336.

Others

Alisa Sholly, who has participated in No Longer Alone Ministries family support group meetings for about a decade is grateful for the experience. “As the name says, I no longer feel alone in knowing how to deal with mental health concerns involving loved ones,” said Sholly. “I receive valuable information on mental health topics, a listening ear from others that can understand, and prayer.”

Michele Sipel, director of InHome Services with Landis at Home a division of Landis Communities, is well attuned with the mission of the support group, which meets

monthly at Landis Homes. Sipel serves as a liaison for the group, which provides a safe place to open up for those who have a loved one living with mental illness. “It’s a different world, and unless you live it, you don’t know (what it’s like),” said Sipel. “It’s one of those subjects where there’s a lot of stigma, but it is so important.”

Meetings are held on the fourth Sunday of each month. The next support group meeting will be held via Zoom on Sunday, Jan. 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. The January meeting will include a video by Dr. Matthew Stanford, PhD, followed by discussion.

The support group was an offshoot of No Longer Alone

Ministries (NLAM), which functioned in Lancaster from 1991 to 2019. When NLAM closed its doors, a peer support group and the family support group overseen by the ministries were transferred to local entities. The peer support group, called Paths to Discovery, became part of Faith Friendship Ministries, and the family support group transferred to Landis, where several of the founding members live.

Landis offered personnel with the necessary expertise to help organize the group as well. Sipel noted that Evon Bergey, vice president of community initiatives with Landis Homes, is from a behavioral health background and added that she and other organizers work with Bob Musser, a licensed social worker who worked with NLAM, to plan meetings, line up speakers, and facilitate meetings. The group began meeting at Landis Homes in January of 2020.

After the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, the group met virtually. In 2023, January, February, and March meetings will be held via Zoom so that inclement weather will not be a deterrent. The group plans to meet virtually once each quarter so that those who cannot come to Landis Homes may attend.

Among the past topics that were covered at meetings are innovations in treatment, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, overcoming grief, mental health and the Bible, and bringing healing to senior care.

Christmas Tree Recycling Program Posted

County residents may dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Trees may be dropped off between dawn and dusk through Tuesday, Jan. 31.

The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. There is a limit of three trees per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations.

There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the Lancaster County Park System. A portion of the funds are used to purchase emerald ash borer protection for about 26 ash trees in Lancaster County Central Park and Buchmiller County Park.

According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, and many deciduous ornamental

PCA&D Wins Competition

America250PA recently announced Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) as the winner of its fourth annual 2022 Direct Effect Innovation Challenge (DEIC). The PCA&D team competed against four other postsecondary institutions - Lebanon Valley College, Point Park University, Rosemont College and Ursinus College - and received

the highest score from a judging panel of industry professionals.

The DEIC is a multi-round competition that challenges students from postsecondary institutions across the commonwealth to design and develop integrated marketing campaigns that explore solutions to real-life challenges and questions. To learn more, visit https://pa cast.com/m?p=22154.

No Longer Alone

Sipel said the group provides an atmosphere of caring and acceptance. “You get to know each other, so people feel comfortable being vulnerable. It is very therapeutic to be able to speak about what you’re going through with others who have lived it and understand.”

Sholly noted that NLAM has provided her with optimism.

trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis after Jan. 4, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home.
