Work begins on athletic field project BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Changes are coming to the athletic fields of Elizabethtown Area School District (EASD), and the upgrades will benefit both students in the district and the greater community. The district broke ground on the project in October, and it is projected to be completed for the 2024-25 school year.
“ T his project will have a positive impact on all of our student-athletes,” said Bill Templin, EASD athletic director. “It will also have a positive impact on all of our students by improving their experience in physical education classes. And that benefit is year-in and year-out, not just a one-time benefit.” Improvements will include

his is a fun way to experience the library in a way you’ve probably never experienced it before,” said Brandon Allen, describing A Taste of Western Lancaster County. “The library will be loud with people talking, catching up with old friends, making new ones and sampling food and beverages from the area.” T he 16th annual Taste of Western Lancaster County will
be held on Friday, Feb. 2, from 4:30 to 9 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St. The event will feature more than 20 vendors stationed throughout the library’s three floors. “We’ll have samples of food from local restaurants and food vendors in our area, as well as samples of beer and wine from local breweries and wineries,” said Allen, who is co-chairing the festivities with Kevin Gardner of the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown. Participating vendors include
The Spot Hometown Deli, Troegs Independent Brewing and Nissley Vineyards. Live music will be featured on at least two floors of the library as people enjoy the samples. The public is invited to vote for the best appetizer, best beverage, best entrée, best dessert and best of show. Winners will receive a plaque to display at their establishment. Proceeds from A Taste of Western Lancaster County will be split between the Rotary Club
Wearing hardhats and safety goggles, a group of students is hard at work on the grounds of Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) in Mount Joy. They’re building a home as part of the school’s House Project, and they’re also honing the skills they need for their future careers. Since 1989, students have constructed homes through the program. Initially, the construction sites were located
throughout Lancaster County, but getting students to the sites was a challenge. In 2005, the school streamlined the process by subdividing sections of the Mount Joy campus into lots for future house projects. Building the homes takes place over two years and involves students in multiple areas of study, said Rick Martin, construction manager. Students in the carpentry program in Mount Joy are joined by LCCTC students in other fields of construction, including electrical work and See Learning pg 3 R102845

Field from pg 1 leveling off the jumping area with the field area for an improved fan experience for jumping events as well as resurfacing the track and all jumping areas. “The current surface was aged and well beyond its useful life as a PIAA track surface,” Templin explained. A state-of-the-art turf field will also be installed. “It will be wide enough to have a regulation-size soccer field in addition to football, field hockey and boys’/girls’ lacrosse,” he noted, adding that the field will allow increased use of the stadium and its facilities.
“In the past, we held competitions only on the grass playing surfacing totaling about 15 uses a year,” Templin shared. “We anticipate now being able to practice and compete on the field in excess of well over several hundred uses. More importantly, as our main stadium, we would anticipate being able to host a much larger number of game events than the current 15.” The project will also include the construction of a three-story field house that will contain locker rooms, restrooms, a space for ath-
letic trainers to treat athletes and a weight room. Additional changes include adding an ADA-accessible entrance to the fields and improving EMS access to the stadium as well as a new bus parking area for visiting teams to safely drop off their players and coaches. Templin emphasized that along with athletes, other students will benefit from the improvements as well, including members of the marching band, who will be able to practice regardless of weather without worrying about damaging a natural grass field in wet or muddy conditions. “The field house and field/track project will greatly
benefit our academic programs as well, as our students in PE class will have access to both the weight room and field for class,” he said. While the project is underway, the district’s spring track and field team is relocating to Elizabethtown College for practices and one home meet, Templin said. “We are grateful to the college for the partnership,” he commented. “We are also extremely appreciative of our student track and field athletes, families and coaches, who will have an unusual season. They are enthusiastic about the project and looking forward to the new facilities in August.”

Project, including the challenge of installing drywall. She’s been interested in carpentry since she was very young. “The first thing I built when I was 4 was a little shelf,” she recalled. “I’ve always liked to build things. Seeing what you create at the end is the best part.” As a freshman at Pequea Valley High School, Katrina Kilby built a shed in a carpentry class and discovered a love for the work. Now a senior at LCCTC, she has had a hands-on part in much of the House Project. “I love seeing this go from nothing to a whole building or a whole house,” she said. “And I really like that it’s hands-on.” For senior Chase Travitz of Manheim, the House Project is providing real-world carpentry experience that he plans to take with him after graduation. He already has a job lined up with eciConstruction. “I’ve always wanted to do something hands-on with my life, and carpentry is something I love,” he said. “I love getting to work with my hands every day. It’s problem solving and learning something new every day.”

plumbing, who come from the Brownstown campus. Instructors Mitchell Hinton and James Smith supervise the students. Once the home is complete, it’s sold on the open market. The most recent home completed by LCCTC students was a three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath house that sold in July of 2022 for $415,900. The proceeds from the sale are used to fund future house projects at the school. Martin noted that the program offers students an opportunity to learn a trade while also engaging kids who might not thrive in a typical academic classroom. “These kids are hands-on. They’re not book learners,” he stated. “They get frustrated sitting at a desk. They want to be out working with their hands, and they will potentially have a great career after this.” The 40-some students working on two houses currently will go on to schools like Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology after graduation or will enter the workforce directly. Martin said that he’s impressed not just with the students’ skills, but with their work ethic as well. “I’ve been a boss and a business owner, and what I always wanted was kids who were willing to work, who wanted to work and wanted to learn,” he stated, “and these are those kids.” Senior Vivienne Nolt of Elizabethtown has enjoyed everything she’s learned from the House

SHARON PETERSMA
Sharon L. Petersma, 93, Masonic Village of Elizabethtown, PA (formerly from Newton, IA) passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, December 23, 2023. Sharon was born in Ames, IA, to Hermon and Lyal Arrasmith. She was a Rainbow Girl and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. In August of 1944, Sharon was stricken with Polio and was in the Sister Kenny Cottage at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, IA. Her recuperation was spent at home in a hospital bed finishing 9th grade remotely, via a walkie talkie type system. She said she was surely the most popular girl because everyone wanted to "carry me from class to class." Sharon recovered from polio only to unexpectedly lose her father. An Ames High graduate, Sharon attended Iowa State University where she studied Dietetics and graduated with Honors and Distinctions, and did a dietetic internship at the Veterans Hospital in Los Angeles, CA. She was member of the Sigma Kappa Sorority. Sharon married Delmar Petersma in 1954. Their marriage was blessed with 2 children. She was a working Registered Dietitian for over 30 years, Sharon enjoyed cooking, playing bridge (becoming a founding member of two bridge clubs that played together for nearly 50 years!), and roller skating (first in college and then around the kitchen table with her grandchildren) but it was her love of music, plays, attending concerts, and most of all dancing that brought her the most joy. Sharon was a active member of her church, participating in the quilting group, Bible Study & Church Choir. She was a woman of strong faith! Sharon and Del were avid travelers, touring all 50 states, trips to Europe, Australia and many cruises. When Del passed in 2011, Sharon continued to live in their home in Newton, IA until March of 2022 when she moved to the Masonic Village in Etown where Sharon made many wonderful friends and she was able to spend time with her daughter & family and her brother’s children in the area. The family is grateful to have been able to have this very special time together in her last years. Sharon was very proud of her children and grandchildren, often sharing their many accomplishments with her friends. She is survived by her daughter, Vicki (Greg) Hill, Mount Joy, PA; her son, Jay (Janet) Petersma, Melissa, TX and granddaughters: Kristin Hill, Boston, MA Danielle Hill, Lancaster, PA, Amanda Hill, San Jose, CA. Mallory Hill, Maytown, PA, and Bailey (Neil) Hicks, McKenny, TX and many nieces, nephews. Her brother Daniel & wife, Joyce Arrasmith preceded her in death. A private Celebration of Life is planned in PA. A funeral will take place in Newton, IA Memorial donations can be made in Sharon’s memory to First Lutheran Church, 309 E 3rd St N, Newton, IA 50208.

Hunger is one of the more common issues individuals encounter when transitioning to a nutritious diet. Many people aspire to eat healthier in an effort to lose weight gained due to overeating. That can make the adjustment more difficult, as individuals are accustomed to eating to a point of fullness. However, there’s good news for people in that situation, as a variety of healthy foods can provide a feeling of fullness and put an end to between-meal hunger pangs. - Water: Water may not be a food, but drinking more of it can provide a feeling of fullness that people are accustomed to. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics notes that symptoms of mild dehydration often present as feelings of hunger. In addition, the PKD Foundation reports that clinical studies have found that 37% of people mistake thirst for hunger because signals that indicate thirst are weak. Dry eyes, feeling sluggish, increased heart rate, and headache are some potential warning signs of thirst. So when mid-afternoon hunger pangs hit, try drinking some water before reaching for a snack. - Vegetables: One of the misconceptions concerning food and fullness is that low-calorie foods are unlikely to be filling. That is not true, and vegetables are a

intelligence later in life. Relaxation is also a common benefit of reading. A 2009 study by Sussex University researchers showed that reading may reduce stress by as much as 68%. Furthermore, if people read paper books rather than e-books before bedtime, this activity takes a person away from screens. Screens can contribute to losing 20 minutes of sleep on average, according to research published in Pediatrics. There are many reasons to curl up with a good book, as reading is beneficial to both mind and body.

testament to how filling certain low-calorie foods can be. According to the Mayo Clinic, most vegetables are low in calories but high in volume or weight. That means they can contribute to feelings of fullness without compromising individuals’ efforts to eat healthy. - Baked potatoes: Nearly 30 years ago, researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia developed a satiety index in an effort to measure how effective certain foods were at helping people feel full. No food finished with a higher satiety ranking than baked potatoes. That’s good news for individuals looking to transition to a nutritious diet, as baked potatoes without any added butter or other toppings are low in sodium and do not contain any cholesterol. Baked potatoes also are a good source of vitamin C and dietary fiber. Buttering a baked potato can compromise its nutritional value, so consider sprinkling pepper in place of butter if you need some additional flavor. - Pulses: One thing to look for to overcome hunger pangs while trying to eat healthy is slowly digested foods. Pulses - the seeds of legume plants - fit that bill. Carbs that the body does not digest quickly can help individuals avoid hunger pangs, and pulses are slow to digest. Beans, lentils and peas are some examples of pulses. Adding pulses to salads or even using pulses like lentils as the foundation for a salad is a great way to eat healthy and avoid hunger. Hunger pangs can compromise a healthy diet. Thankfully, many healthy foods pack a nutritional punch and provide a feeling of fullness that can reduce the likelihood of potentially harmful between-meal snacking.
Additionally, as long as a person borrows books from a library or a friend, reading is free. It’s possible to educate oneself, travel to faroff lands or even solve mysteries without making a major financial investment. Reading also has the power to enhance literacy and intelligence, as frequent reading introduces the reader to new vocabulary and information. Also, a study of 1,890 identical twins in the United Kingdom found that the twins who had early reading skills seemingly had more positive results for higher

Reading also improves concentration and focus. Technology draws a lot of attention, and those fast processing times and almost instant gratification can shorten attention spans. Reading requires undivided attention and focus, which can improve one’s ability to concentrate. Those who are looking for a sense of accomplishment may read anything from a newspaper article to a novel. Finishing this task, helps people check off measurable goals, and the mental boost they receive may enhance their mood.

Reading is a popular pastime, and self-proclaimed book nerds and those who look forward to the next book club gathering can rejoice knowing that a good story isn’t the only benefit associated with this activity. In fact, there are numerous health benefits to cracking a book. For one thing, reading slows cognitive decline. Natural aging results in a decline in memory and brain function over time, but according to research published in the journal Neurology, reading may help slow that process and keep minds sharp.
