Troop 51 celebrates 60 years BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Whitney is curious to learn more details about its history. “I know we ’ve had different char ter organizations and meeting locations throughout the years,” she said, adding that she has been part of the troop since 2018. “I have found a roster from 1974. I believe they had 25 Scouts on that roster. We would love to know more from anyone who has been a part of our troop’s past. We have an Eagle book, but it only goes back to No. 73, so we would love to know the rest.” At the celebration, the current Scouts will display information and memorabilia they have collected about the troop, and they will share stories of the troop throughout the years. Light refreshments will be served. No registration is needed to attend the party. For more information on Troop 51, search for “Boy Scout Troop 51” on Facebook or visit www.etowntroop51.org.

earned the award the same night only about an hour apart,” Whitney recalled. “I let them decide who would do their Board of Review, the last step for achieving Eagle, first since I knew it would mean who was 100 and who was 101. Graham graciously stepped aside and let Matt go first. That felt like a very Eagle Scout thing to do.” O u t i n t he i r com mu n i t y, members of Troop 51 have participated in events, including the Memorial Day parade and GE AR S Holiday Parade and Wreaths Across America. “Many of our members are part of the Order of the Arrow, which is like the honor society of Scouts BSA,” Whitney said. “We enjoy different types of monthly outings like climbing, whitewater rafting, lock-ins, hiking trips and really anything else the Scouts want to try.” As the troop marks 60 years,

ooking at a uniform from Scouts BSA Troop 51 recently, Elizabeth Whitney noticed something about the Elizabethtown-based Boy Scout troop. “I noticed it was established in 1964, so I did the math and realized that this is year 60,” said the committee chair of Troop 51. “So, we decided, ‘Hey, let’s celebrate.’” T h e t ro o p w i l l m a r k t h e milestone with a party during its Winter Court of Honor on Monday, Jan. 29, beginning at 7 p.m. at St. Paul’s Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. The troop invites anyone who has been a part of Troop 51 in the past or anyone who just wants to celebrate with the group to attend the party. “If you’ve been a part of Scouting in our troop or not, come out and help us remember what the
Scouting community means,” Whitney said. “We currently are a small troop, but we have great Scouts.” In fact, the troop recently reached its 100th and 101st Eagle Scouts. “The pandemic gave the troop some unique challenges, but it did help us add 12 new Eagle Scouts,” Whitney said. “This is quite the accomplishment as only around 6% of all Scouts earn this accomplishment. We have had Scouts build benches, drain and clean lakes and create garden spaces for their projects.” The troop’s 100th Eagle Scout, Matt Kerin, built and installed food shelves for the ECHOS shelter. Graham Warburton, the 101st Eagle Scout, built and installed different styles of birdhouses and an owl house at the Old Trolley Line Park and created a butterfly garden. “ These two Scouts actually
Derek Koch, the new chief of police for the Elizabethtown Police Department, is looking forward to serving close to home. “I’ve worked in the law enforcement field for over 27 years,” he said. “However, I never worked directly in my home community. My family and I reside in Elizabethtown, and as a result, I have a vested interest in the community and its citizens. The opportunity to serve the Elizabethtown community as its chief of police provides me with a direct way to help make Elizabethtown a safer, better place to live.” Koch was sworn in as chief on Jan. 2. He said he has two main goals for his new position: to ensure the members of the Elizabethtown community are provided with exemplary, professional service, and to help improve the overall quality of life within Elizabethtown Borough. Koch grew up in Pine Grove in Schuylkill County. He and his wife moved to the area in 1999 for his first assignment with the Pennsylvania State Police in Lancaster. He has served with the Dauphin County Probation and Parole Department, with the York City Police Department and most recently as a troop commander with the Pennsylvania State Police. Additionally, he has supplemented his law enforcement

Grace Community Fellowship may be a church, but pastor Jon Barrett wants the building to serve as something else as well. “Our mission is to make this a place you can call home,” he said. “And what is home? It’s a place you can dwell in, a place you can be comfortable and a place you can feel relaxed and welcome.” Barrett became pastor at the church, located at 1483 N. Colebrook Road, Manheim, last summer. Over the past few months, he’s been working on encouraging people to walk through the doors. “My heart hurts for how many people in our community are struggling with loneliness,” he said. “People have also lost their trust for the church. I want our community to know they can come here, and they will feel love. Our church family is so warm, and I want to share that with our community.” While Barrett is focused on the Bible and bringing the Word of God to people, he also wants to meet people where they are in their lives.

“People are looking for a place to go and be with other people, a place to belong ,” he said. “As a pastor, my heart is to see people come to know Jesus. I want people to know the Lord loves them.” Before Barrett became pastor, the church had been without a permanent leader for more than a year. He noted that although the congregation is small, the church has a long history and a strong foundation. “The people in this congregation are so loving,” he said. “My congregation really inspires me. When people come in, they will see smiling faces and friendly people. They are not judgy. They’re real, and we want people to come as they are.” His vision for the church
expands beyond Sunday morning worship. “Manheim doesn’t currently have a hub or one place people can go for everything they need,” he said. “We’d like to be a place people can come and lives can be changed. Times are tough, and every one of us is broken in some aspect. All of us need healing in some form or another. We’re inviting people to come and be broken with us together. We want to get down to the root of issues and help change lives rather than just put a Band-Aid on problems.” Along with worship service on Sundays at 10:30 a.m., Grace Community Fellowship offers Sunday school for people of all ages at 9:30 a.m. A men’s group meets on the first Monday
of each month, and a ladies’ g roup holds quar terly events. The congregation also hosts fellowship meals throughout the year. Barrett noted that although the church members welcome anyone, he hopes people who come to the church will be ready for change. “ We want anybody to come as they are, but we don’t want them to stay as they are,” he explained. “We want them to know the life-transforming power of Jesus and the life-transforming power of relationships. If you really need love and you’re not afraid to receive it, we can be that place in our community.” For more information, visit https://gcfmanheim .org.

Our community is kind and friendly, and we take great pride in making Elizabethtown a great place to live.” He acknowledges that he will face challenges in his new role, noting that obstacles facing Elizabethtown are common in many small towns, and he’s ready to take action where needed. “My biggest challenges as the chief of police will be
guided by the obstacles we face as a community,” he said. “It would be premature for me to prioritize those difficulties before having an oppor tunity to meet with community leaders and get a pulse on what the police department is doing well and where it needs to improve.” When he’s not at work, Koch enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. “I’m a huge sports fan, so in my free time, I enjoy attending sporting events and participating in recreational sports,” he said, adding that he also loves working out and spending time outdoors. libraries or churches. “After COVID-19, we went remote,” said Thurston. “We have not had a permanent home since 2020. It was very tough. It kept costs low, but we were seeing that people didn’t know how to find us, and we couldn’t help them.” “Having an actual location where people can come to, it’s just so great,” added Thurston. “We want to have a safe place where our community can come and heal. We’ve already had people come in and say, I’ve been looking for you.’” The move to 1380 Harrisburg Pike culminated a nearly two-year search for Hope Inspire Love. Some of the $65,000 raised at the organization’s inaugural Hope for Freedom gala in June of 2023 was used to fund the relocation and to purchase furnishings. “After COVID, we paused and asked ourselves, this what we really want to do?’” said Thurston. “We wanted to be right outside the city.
We wanted anyone to be able to walk through our door. We wanted to have a space with great lighting, parking spots, and there’s a bus stop right outside our door. It has an open floor plan, and the intake office in the back can be utilized for connecting in the future.” Hope Inspire Love’s new office space also represents a milestone in the organization’s process of progress. “At the beginning, we were so focused on education,” said Thurston of the organization, which was founded in 2017. “We probably thought about the office originally 10 years ago. I never thought it would happen in year six. But we can’t do this alone. What’s blown us away is that we now have three full-time staff members and over 50 volunteers. We are so grateful and so thankful for a great community.” For additional information on Hope Inspire Love, go to www.hopeinspirelove. org.

fastnacht bake in honor of the 100th anniversary, and Resch shared a little bit about the first bake. “In 1924, they had a fastnacht social,” he said. “It wasn’t a takeout sale. Pe o p l e c a m e i n t o t h e church, and there was dancing, and they raised $615 toward the construction of our new church, which broke ground in 1926. In today’s prices, that’s over $11,000.” Proceeds from the fastnacht sale will be used for maintenance and upkeep of the church and for projects at both the church and Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School (OLA). Resch noted that the fastnacht bakes are always fun, with camaraderie and fellowship shared among generations. “I’m always impressed by the students from OLA and Lancaster
Catholic who come here before school to help,” he said. The committee members reminded people to order early because the fastnachts always sell out. “Our fastnachts are artisan,” Sahd said. “I think that’s why they are popular, because they’re not available all the time. They’re a special treat.” Orders for fastnachts will be taken online only this year and will begin at https://holy trinityc olumbiapa.com/shop/ on Monday, Jan. 29. Doors will open at 10 a.m. each day for pickup at the side entrance of the school, 404 Cherry St., Columbia. Orders not picked up by 1 p.m. will be resold on a first-come, first-ser ved basis. To volunteer with the fastnacht bake, email HTFastnacht@gmail.com.

The musical premiered at Atlanta’s Alliance Theater in 2015 and opened on Broadway in April 2016. Alexis Bledel and Jonathan Jackson starred in the film version in 2002.

Central character Winnie Foster, played by Elsa Rogers, a junior music performance major from Columbia, yearns for a life of adventure beyond her white picket fence, but it is not until she becomes entwined with the Tuck family that she gets more adventure than she could have imagined. W hen Winnie learns of the magic behind the Tucks’ everlasting youth, she must fight to protect their secret from those who would do anything for a chance at eternal life. As her adventure unfolds, Winnie faces a choice - return to her life or continue with the Tucks on their infinite journey. To purchase tickets, visit www.lbc.edu/events.

“O u r f a s t n a c h t s a re unique,” said Betty Mahan, a member of the fastnacht committee at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Columbia. “These are handmade, not made by a machine, so no two are alike. It’s just like stars - each one is unique.” Holy Trinity will host its 100th annual fastnacht bake beginning Monday, Feb. 12. The sale will continue on Tuesday, Feb. 13, and on Mondays and Wednesdays for the next four weeks, wrapping up on Wednesday, March 13. “We call them ‚Äòa little bite of heaven,’” said committee member Paul Resch. Added committee member Jim Knapp, “They’re so good. They are different than doughnuts because they are made with potato and yeast. We fry them in vegetable oil, and then we serve them by the dozen, plain or glazed.” Over the several weeks of the sale, hundreds of volunteers will create the fastnachts, and the organizers are always looking for additional help.
“We especially need help with rolling,” said Mahan. “There’s a certain way you roll, and if they are not rolled right, everything goes downhill.” She noted that no experience is necessary to volunteer. “There are people here who have been doing this for a long time, and they’ll teach volunteers,” she said. “It’s on-the-job training.” Shifts begin as early as 4 a.m., but help is particularly needed beginning about 7:30 or 8 a.m. “ Yo u d o n ’ t h a v e t o commit for a long shift,” Mahan said. “You can come for an hour or two.” Committee member Karen Sahd oversees volunteers who come in the night before each bake to prep the dough using the 100-year-old recipe. Resch estimates that volunteers will make 6,300 dozen fastnachts this year or more than 75,000. “ That puts it in perspective, 75,000,” he said. “You could fill a football stadium and give everyone a fastnacht.” Church members put together a history of the

January is National Eye Care Month. The Lancaster County Office of Aging has offered information on protecting one’s eye health. Maintaining regular eye appointments is a critical factor in preventing and managing eye diseases that can lead to vision loss and possible blindness, including cataracts, which is the leading cause of vision loss in older adults; diabetic retinopathy, which causes damage to blood vessels in the back of the eye; glaucoma, which can cause damage to the optic nerve; and age-related macular degeneration, the gradual breakdown of light-sensitive tissue in the eye. Regular eye care appointments can help people and their providers to keep up to date on any changes in patients’ vision and eye care needs. People should maintain their blood sugar level, as those who have diabetes are more prone to e ye problems. Managing one’s blood sugar levels can help prevent eye issues and other complications. Having a healthy blood press ure is imp or tant in reducing one’s risk of
developing vision problems, such as hypertensive retinopathy or optic neuropathy. People may speak with their medical provider regarding their risk factors. Additionally, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, including kale, spinach and collard greens, can lower a person’s risk of long-term eye diseases, including cataracts and age-related macular degeneration, which affects a person’s central vision. Eating foods rich in vitamins A, C and E may be particularly helpful. People should limit mobile phone, computer and television screen time and take a break every 20 minutes. Spending too much time staring at a screen can cause eye strain. To avoid the r isk o f infection, people should always wash their hands thoroughly before touching their eyes. They should avoid rubbing their eyes with their hands and use a clean tissue instead. Wearing sunglasses with U V- A a n d U V- B ra d i a tion-protected lenses can shield the eyes from the sun’s potentially harmful rays.
