Offering Hope Through Health BY CATHY MOLITORIS

When Anne Marie McAlester became executive director of Hope Within Ministries in October 2019, she started thinking about changing the sign outside the Elizabethtown organization. “I felt it didn’t communicate everything we are about,” she said. So last fall, she applied for a community

avid Abel describes himself as a visionary. Thanks to his vision, the National Christmas Center will have a new home in Elizabethtown. For almost 20 years, the National Christmas Center operated in Paradise, until owner Jim Morrison closed the business in early 2018. Abel purchased the site’s contents in late 2018, with the plan of opening a new center at Stone Gables Estate in Elizabethtown. The center is scheduled to open in the Barns of Belmont, 1 Hollinger Lane, in a few years. In the meantime, the public will have a chance to see the work-inprogress in its temporary location in Middletown during the Christmas season later this year.

“We want to highlight the awe and wonder of Christmas and its traditions,” Abel noted.

Our mission is to tell the true meaning of Christmas, so this fits perfectly with that.” In an office building off of Route 230 in Middletown, Abel is busy working with a team of contractors, along with co-curators John Enterline and Morrison, to not only set up the items originally housed in the Christmas Center, but also expand its offerings. “The original National Christmas Center was 20,000 square feet,” Abel noted. “The new one will be 40,000 square feet.” Along with items and displays found in the original center, including a life-size reproduction of a Woolworth store, a vast collection of Santas and scenes depicting the birth of Christ, the new center will feature a boys’ toy store full of models, trains,

The sign, at 4748 East Harrisburg Pike, now reads “Hope Within Community Health, Counseling & Dental Center.” “We are a free primary medical care clinic, and we’ve been offering that since 2006,” McAlester noted. “In 2014, we added counseling, and we hoped to add dental in (early 2020), but COVID pushed that back until we finally opened our dental clinic in July 2020.” McAlester said the nonprofit provides primary care for uninsured, low-income people in Lancaster, Lebanon and Dauphin counties. “These are people who work part-time hours without benefits or people who have lost their jobs or are unemployed,” she explained.

Amazing Accomplishment - MS Patient Completes Ironman

I’M NOT JUST WHISTLING DIXIE,

Rec Center To Offer MS Challenge Training

BUT GUESS WHO’S TURNING

BY ANN MEAD ASH

60?! Happy Birthday Penny!

R067851

Stephen Glaus, who began offering individual 12-week training sessions in the MS Fitness Challenge at the Lititz recCenter in January, is living proof that the program, which utilizes focused exercise and nutrition, can have positive results. In 2018, Stephen experienced significant mobility impairment and blurred and double vision from multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune

disease that causes nerve damage and interferes with communication from the brain to the body. In the fall of 2020, he completed a virtual Ironman - swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles from Reading to Marietta, and running 26.2 miles. Stephen’s journey with MS began in July 2018. At the age of 27, the Elizabethtown native was working in his dream job as a drone salesman in California. “On a business trip to Japan, my left foot went completely numb,” he recalled. Three weeks later, Stephen had lost the ability to walk unaided, and he was dealing with other complications. Realizing his life would change dramatically, Stephen left his job in California, and he and his wife, Nikki, returned to Elizabethtown. Characterizing himself as “stubborn,” Stephen refused to accept the doctor’s predictions that he would be using a wheelchair in two years.

Instead, he began researching resources and came across the book “David’s Goliath” by David Lyons, which outlines the MS Fitness Challenge. Stephen connected with Lyons, who founded the MS Fitness Challenge organization, and Lyons began coaching Stephen. He also made dietary recommendations. As the two men became acquainted, Lyons felt that Stephen would be an asset to the organization. “I jumped aboard,” said Stephen who began studying for his personal trainer license, which he received from the National Federation of Personal Trainers in March of 2019. Stephen’s health slowly improved, and he began thinking about doing a full Ironman triathlon. He met a former Navy SEAL, with whom he

shared his Ironman dream. “I didn’t know how to swim, so once a week he got in the pool with me and taught me to swim,” said Stephen. Soon a 3-mile swim was no problem. Weeks before Stephen was to complete his full Ironman, he learned that COVID-19 restrictions had forced organizers to cancel. “MS is a time bomb,” said Stephen. “You never know when the next relapse will come.” Uncomfortable with waiting for the 2021 event, Stephen found a virtual platform that allowed him to realize his goal with help from his long-distance swimming coach, Louise Hyder-Darlington, and his father, who drove along on the bicycle route and biked beside his son during the run. I have been homeless because of drugs, and I’ve stolen food when I needed to.” After getting clean, Bellino wanted to help others. He began talking to people about donating food, and soon he had much more than he needed. “God provided me with an opportunity to help people who were in the same boat or worse than I was once,” he stated. “There were people who helped me back in the day, and they will never know how much they have done for me. Little ones are invited to make music at Florin Church of the Brethren during the Little Notes music ministry. The program is held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. on the second, fourth and fifth Thursdays of the month at the church, 815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy, and is open for children up to kindergarten age and their caregivers. “Little Notes is a program we offer to introduce children to music,” said Jan Chavez, program director. “We’ll get out a variety of musical instruments for the children to play with. I’ll play some singalong songs. I like to include songs they know and pepper in some new ones for them to learn.” The program, which is free, also features play time and other activities. “We’ll have parachute time and snack, and I might play a DVD or do a simple craft or coloring page with the children,” Chavez stated.

To stay as safe as possible during COVID-19, the program is held in a large space where participants can spread out, and all snacks are individually wrapped. Chavez also sanitizes all instruments between sessions. Chavez started the program two years ago as a way to give back to the church she’s belonged to her whole life and to provide a musical opportunity for preschoolers. “I have a little bit of background in music. I grew up taking piano lessons, and I was in the orchestra,” she noted, adding that she enjoyed taking her two children to music programs when they were young. Participants in Little Notes can expect a laid-back atmosphere, she remarked, adding, “It’s a very informal, relaxed environment where the kids can just be and do and have fun and learn. They can touch the instruments, hear how different ones sound and learn what their

names are. It’s also a time for the adults to meet other people and socialize.” Although the program typically runs during the school year, Chavez said she plans to extend it through the summer this year to make up for missed weeks due to school closures. She emphasized that she relies on the support of Jodi Kerlin, church secretary, to help her run the program. She also said everyone is welcome to attend with their children, whether they live in the Mount Joy area or not. “This is something fun for anyone with little kids,” she said. “I invite anyone to come and check it out any week.” For more information on the program, readers may call Chavez at 717-715-5977 or the Florin Church of the Brethren office at 717-653-1202 or search for “Little Notes at Florin Church of the Brethren” on Facebook.

Bears Earn Section Win Over CV, 56-33 Elizabethtown enjoyed the other side of the coin with a comfy 23-point win over Conestoga Valley. E-town controlled throughout posting a scoring edge in all four quarters, helped by a stingy defense that kept the Buckskins in single digits in three of those frames. Elizabethtown had four players hit double digits with three of them accounting for E-town’s 12-5 run through the opening eight. Techeal Gonquoi picked up three of his game high 12 in the opening frame while Patrick Gilhool (four points) and Matthew Gilhool (five points) covered the remaining nine points, on their way to matching 10-point affairs. Braden Cummings completed the quartet of double-digit scorers, netting eight of his 11 in the second frame. Cummings’s second quarter spurt led to a 21-14 run into the break and gave E-town a 33-19 cushion. The Bears outscored CV 23-14 in the second half, holding the Buckskins to single digits in both quarters, and locking up the 56-33 win.

Donahue, Ethan Hall, Nathan Yohn and Jake Rudy closed out the meet with a 400-freestyle relay victory. Runnels did his solo work in the 100-freestyle and the 100-breaststroke while Ben Azzalina claimed the 50-freestyle and the 100-backstroke. RIFLE The E-town rifle team, like the rest of the high school sports world, finds itself in the middle of a “stupid year,” according to head coach Dave Reinfried. COVID-19 restrictions combined with limited space due to construction at the middle school have limited where the Bears can practice. The result is a 2-2 mark after a pair of losses to Manheim Township on January 19th. The first of those matches was a 780-779 setback that required scoring to go to the eighth shooter while the second was a traditional five shooter loss, 491-489. No Bear

was able hit the perfect 100 mark in either match but Nizaly Ortiz-Kreiner, Aivery Shuck and Emily Bonsall came close with scores of 99. Bonsall picked up one of four 98s in the other match, joining Kyle Lloyd, Emma Kreiser and Allison Lowell. Luke Turner joined Ortiz-Kreiner, Lloyd and Lowell with scores of 97 while Turner added a 95 in the second match with Ben Pietsch rounding things out with a 96. Before the double-header loss to Manheim Township, the Bears moved to 2-0 with a 491-484 win over Conestoga Valley on January 14th. Elizabethtown got a perfect score from Bonsall while OrtizKreiner just missed with her 99. Turner and Kreiser posted a matching pair of 97s while Shuck came in one shot better with a 98.

three taking part in relay wins as well. Brooke Heisey was part of that trio and one of her individual wins came as part of an E-town sweep in the 200-freestyle while the other came in the 500-freestyle. Morgan Conway was member number two of the trio with her victory in the 200 IM leading E-town’s other sweep while her second win came in the 100-breaststoke. Genevieve McDonald completed the trio with solo wins in the 50freestyle and the 100-butterfly. Gabby Walsh (100-backstroke) and Gabi Dabbs (100-freestyle) finished the individual wins. Elizabethtown claimed both the freestyle relays with Conway, Dabbs, McDonald, and Megan Handshew taking the 200freestyle and Dabbs, Walsh, Heisey and Lilly Rutkowski taking the 400freestyle relay. BOWLING The bowling team has been busy of late, suffering a 5-2 setback to Hempfield between 7-0 wins over Lebanon and Warwick. In the January 19th loss to Hempfield, E-town used eight different keglers with Derek Deardorff the lone Bear to bowl all three games, finishing with a 595 series. Adam Baker, Eric Barnes, Connor Alleman, Gabe Berrier and Mason Flowers took part in two games while Billy Dougherty and Ally Evans finished the action. The Bears bounced right back, topping Warwick 7-0 just one night later. This time Elizabethtown went with just five keglers leading to wins of 1033-953, 1078-994 and 965-952. Zach Wentzel led the pack with a 643 series while Alaina Telenko (630), Eryn Moore (628) and Daniel Eberle (621) were not far behind. Zach Deardorff added a 554 series. Elizabethtown’s other 7-0 sweep took place on the 14th with nine Bears lending a hand. Moore and Zach Deardorff were the only two three game rollers with Deardorff leading the way with a 657 series. Moore broke the 600-pin plateau with games of 210, 203 and 194.

Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, wants to spread love while warming hearts and stomachs. The church will hold a free soup drive-through on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 10 a.m. until noon or until the soup runs out. This is the first time the church will be holding an event featuring free soup but not the first time the church has offered a drive-through format. The organizers were inspired by a free takeout ham dinner offered during the church’s drive-through Nativity in December, said organizer Kris Gray. “The free ham dinner was so well received that we wanted to offer another free food event to share the love of Jesus with our community, Gray noted. “Homemade soup is a great comfort food and perfect for warming up during these cold days. The event will feature chicken corn noodle soup. “A

Refrigerated containers of soup will be distributed to anyone who attends the event and will be delivered directly to cars. “You can drive up to the carport at the church to receive your soup, she explained. “You will not even need to leave your car. Just heat the soup up at home when you are ready to serve it. The event is first-come, first-served, so no reservations are needed. “There will be different-sized containers, and the portion will be determined by family size, Gray remarked, adding that soup also makes a great donation to a family in need. “If you do not eat soup, then prayerfully consider someone who would be blessed by such a gift during these challenging times. Gray said organizers hope to hold free soup events on a regular basis. The next one is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 20.

Wreaths Across America Posts Cleanup Wreaths Across America at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery will hold Operation Clean Sweep on Saturday, Jan. 30, at the cemetery. Volunteers are needed to help pick up over 40,000 live balsam wreaths for disposal. One wreath was placed on each grave during Wreaths Across America Day on Dec. 19, 2020, made possible by sponsorships from thousands of people. Returning the cemetery to its pristine state is a part of the Wreaths Across America’s program and mission to honor veterans. Volunteers are asked to attend an 8 a.m. process briefing on the plaza of the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial located at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Parking will be limited in order to clear paths for dump trucks and trailers. Volunteers are asked to park at The Community Club/Arrowhead Bar & Grill Parking lot, 9-65 Fisher Ave., Annville. A shuttle bus will begin operation at 7:30 a.m., and helpers will be returned to their vehicles after cleanup is complete. Anyone arriving to help later than 8 a.m. will be instructed to report to the memorial for directions. There is no minimum age for participants, as the cleanup may serve to teach future generations about honoring veterans. Children

should be with their adults at all times. Volunteers should prepare for the weather. They should dress warmly in clothes that may get soiled and wear comfortable shoes. This is a very physical project, so community members should use their judgment when deciding whether to participate. No animals except service dogs are allowed on the cemetery grounds. Attendees are encouraged to bring long-poled leaf rakes or brooms, tarps, and plastic toboggans/sleds. The project requires low-profile dump trucks, dump trailers, and trucks with low and long beds only. People should not bring triaxle trucks, pickup trucks, ATVs or motorized trail vehicles. This year, all volunteers are required to comply with CDC guidelines, including social distancing and wearing face masks. Readers may find the “Operation Clean Sweep - 2021 on the “Wreaths Across America Indiantown Gap National Cemetery page on Facebook for updates. Information is also available by emailing wreaths indiantowngap@gmail.com. For more information about Wreaths Across America, readers may visit www.wreaths acrossamerica.org.

Hope Within from pg 1 Counseling is offered on a sliding-scale payment plan and is open to anyone, with no income qualifications. All medical services are provided by volunteers, including a volunteer psychiatrist who comes in twice a month. “We use a battalion of volunteer medical providers who work full time somewhere else but volunteer here a few hours a month, McAlester noted. “We use graduate students under the supervision of licensed counselors for our mental health counseling. She added that the organization hopes to expand its dental clinic but is in need of more volunteer dentists. Over the last year, Hope Within has seen a rising need for its services. “Across the board, we’ve seen huge increases. We’re seeing people who have lost their jobs, people who are afraid of losing their jobs. We’ve seen a major spike in requests for services. We have people who can no longer afford insulin or asthma medication,

McAlester remarked. “These medications are very expensive. The organization typically holds four fundraisers throughout the year, but had to cancel all of them in 2020. Hope Within is planning a Valentine’s Day fundraiser, she noted, with more information coming soon on the organization’s Facebook page. “We’ll ask people to donate to us, and in return, we’ll send a personalized card out on their behalf, McAlester explained. Along with financial constraints, the organization lost a lot of volunteer office staff and a few doctors, many of whom are elderly and were worried about the risk of continuing to volunteer during a pandemic. Despite these challenges, McAlester remains hopeful that Hope Within will continue to thrive. “We are a Christian ministry, and our faith is strong, she stated. “We rely on our faith, and we have found that God has been faithful. Even though this past year has been hard, we have surpassed whatever goals we have set.
