Hiestand purchased the building and donated the house to the community of Marietta, dedicating it in the memory of their son, Lt. Benjamin Hiestand, who had died while serving in the military. Over the years, the building has housed an American Legion post, a public library, a well-baby clinic, a soup kitchen and the Pennsylvania School for the Arts, among other organizations. Jones hosted a senior expo in October, and he plans to hold a second one this coming fall, but this is the first Senior Sweetheart Tea he’s organized. “I am always looking for new opportunities to connect with and interact with constituents,” he stated. “So, when I heard about a similar senior event, I wanted to bring that same outreach back to our district.” Cindy Wivell, admissions and marketing manager for Paramount, invited Jones to speak at a veterans’ event in November, and when Jones had the idea to host a Valentine’s Day party for seniors, he reached out to her. “Cindy is passionate about what she does and
loves celebrating seniors,” Jones said. The party serves a purpose more than just fun, Wivell said. “ I t ’s i m p o r t a n t f o r seniors especially to get out and make connections in their community,” she explained. “ T his event offers multiple benefits to its attendees, from having an easy opportunity to speak in person to their local state representative to simply offering a great atmosphere to socialize, connect and also celebrate Valentine’s Day in a special way.” The Senior Sweetheart Tea is free, but reservations are required by Wednesday, Feb. 7. Elizabethtown College’s Education Organization will present an A-T Benefit Concert on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Leffler Chapel and Performance Center on the college campus, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown. The concert will include performances by ECDT, Emotion, the college’s theater clubs, Mad Cow Improv, Melica and Vocalign. Ataxia-telangiectasia is a progressive, degenerative disease that affects many of the body’s systems. The first signs of the disease appear in early childhood and impact the ability to walk. The person experiences progressive degeneration of the cerebellum, which gradually leads to a general lack of muscle control, slurred or distorted speech, difficulty controlling the eyes and difficulty writing, and the disease results in the eventual confinement of the patient to a wheel-
chair. Patients usually develop telangiectasia, or tiny red spider veins that appear in the corners of the eyes or on the surface of the ears and cheeks. For most children with A-T, there is another clinical hallmark: immunodeficiency that usually brings recurrent respirator y infections. In many patients, these infections can become life-threatening. The goal for the concert is to raise money for the A-T Children’s Project to help fund further research into this disease with the goal of slowing disease progression and finding a cure. For more information about A-T, visit www. atcp.org or visit the A-T Children’s Project’s social media pages. There is a fee, with a discount for students, staff members and faculty members. For more information, email edorg@etown.edu.

Datorre earns Girl Scout Gold Award Catherine Datorre, a student at Elizabethtown Area High School and a member of Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania, has earned the highest award in Girl Scouting, the Girl Scout Gold Award. Datorre’s project, “Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development Rubber Duckie Festival Games,” focused on addressing the wear and tear on games used at the center’s annual event while also making the games accessible to more children. She created games that children of all abilities could enjoy. Her project’s mission will continue as the center uses the games annually for its festival
attendees. Datorre devoted a minimum of 80 hours to plan, solve problems, and implement her ideas. The Gold Award is the highest achievement a Girl Scout can earn, and it is available to girls in high school who create sustainable change for a community or world issue. The Gold Award process not only enables girls to help their communities, but also provides opportunities for them to grow as individuals. Girls build professional skills, earn scholarships, build their network, and, for those interested in serving their country, are able to enlist at a higher pay grade if they join the military.

Bear Bags program honored
Karen Nell (back, second from right), superintendent of the Elizabethtown Area School District, and Michael Pericci (far left), coordinator of support services, gathered with Jenn Fields (back, second from left), district social worker and coordinator of the Bear Bags program, and high school teacher Rebecca Booth (second row, center) and her class at the Bear Bags Food Pantry to celebrate the program’s recognition.
Elizabethtown Area School District’s Bear Bags program was recognized as one of the top three nonprofit organizations in Lancaster County by Lancaster County Magazine’s Best of Lancaster 2023 Readers Survey. The annual survey allows community members to voice their opinions on the best businesses and organizations in the area. The Bear Bags program, part of the district’s Support Services Division and Culture of Belonging initia-
tive, addresses the needs of individuals and families facing food insecurity. It was initiated with the goal of easing hunger among students and their families. District social worker Jenn Fields coordinates the community-funded program. Under the supervision of high school teacher Rebecca Booth, students from Booth’s class assemble food-filled backpacks for students to take home to their families on weekends.
Preventing carbon monoxide poisoning W hen temperatures start dropping, it is time to turn up the heat. However, doing so can present the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. People may take various steps to help prevent CO poisoning. Using a battery-operated CO detector will allow homeowners to monitor CO levels in their home and be alerted if the levels get too high. Homeowners should also have chimneys cleaned and inspected each year by a qualified professional. Children and pets, and anything that can burn, should be kept at least 3 feet away from open fires and space heaters. People should ensure their space heaters have been tested to the latest safety standards and certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory. Space heaters should be placed on a level, hard and nonflammable surface, such as ceramic tile floor, not on rugs or carpets or near bedding or drapes.
Space heaters should always be plugged directly into electrical outlets; never use power strips or extension cords, as these may overheat and cause a fire. A space heater should never be left turned on when the home’s occupants are sleeping, and space heaters should not be placed close to any sleeping person. People should always turn off space heaters when they leave the room. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the most common symptoms of CO poisoning are headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, c h e s t p a i n , we a k n e s s , dizziness and confusion. Symptoms mimic flu symptoms, but CO poisoning does not cause a fever. If anyone is experiencing similar symptoms at home, but the symptoms go away when they leave home, they may have CO poisoning; to ensure the person’s safety, 911 should be called.

Fall prevention tips offered The Lancaster County Office of Aging has posted tips to help prevent falls during the winter months. People are advised to wear shoes with good traction. They should also dress warmly to keep their muscles relaxed, as tense muscles can adversely affect balance. Technique is important when getting out of a vehicle. People should begin by planting both feet firmly on the ground and then steadying themselves on the door frame until they have gotten their balance. The Office of Aging
advises people to avoid shortcuts and stay on cleared sidewalks and paths even though it may take longer. Grassy areas and slopes can be slippery like snowy steps. People should take extra time and avoid rushing. They should take short steps with their toes pointed slightly outward to maintain a stable support base. They should pay attention to the surfaces ahead of them and look down with their eyes only, as moving the head downward may shift a person’s balance.

Millersville-based wildlife rehabilitation center Acorn Acres will host its annual Groundhog Day celebration on Friday, Feb. 2, in downtown Lancaster. The festivities will kick off at Ville & Rue, 8 W. King St., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The celebration will continue with an all-ages Groundhog Day party from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Imperial, 26 E. Chestnut St. Both events will be free to attend. At 11:30 a.m., Acorn Acres ambassador Elliott the groundhog will predict the weather forecast for the remaining winter months. This will be Elliott’s first prognostication, as the yearly ritual was previously completed by the wildlife center’s former mascot, Poppy. After Poppy’s death last February, Elliott has taken over the late groundhog’s responsibilities as the face of Acorn Acres. Complimentary snacks and beverages will be available at Ville & Rue, and Poppy-themed items such as pillows, tea towels and tote bags will be available to purchase. Once the party moves to the Imperial, guests may enjoy various family-friendly activities including groundhog-themed crafts, cornhole, Jenga and live entertainment. A game of bingo will begin at 5 p.m., but there will be a twist: Players must yell “groundhog” to redeem a winning card. At 6 p.m., an educational program featuring Elliott will be held to offer guests information on groundhogs, followed by Elliott’s second prognostication at 7 p.m. for this year’s National Football League championship. Tickets for a prize drawing will be available until the winning numbers are selected at 8 p.m., and food and drinks will be available to purchase from a cash bar before the party wraps up. Traditionally, Acorn Acres celebrates Groundhog Day with a scavenger hunt in Lancaster city. The event was created in 2021 by the organization’s founder, Betsy Shank, who sought a way to support local businesses in the aftermath of

the COVID-19 pandemic. “I happened to have an Emmy-nominated and very cute groundhog, so I used Poppy’s popularity to draw people to downtown businesses,” Shank said. Poppy acquired national fame after she appeared alongside Bill Murray in a commercial for the National Football League championship game in 2020. Shank decided to change the format of the event after Elliott took over as Acorn Acres’ mascot. Although Poppy was always comfortable in the limelight, Elliott is a younger and much more reserved groundhog. With this in mind, Shank redesigned the event to still support local businesses without overwhelming Elliott. Several businesses located in Quarryville, Conestoga and other parts of the Southern End have donated prizes and other items for the celebration, including Britain Hill Winery, Conestoga Cookies and Hempfield Botanicals. Acorn Acres’ facility is located in Millersville, but its service area covers most of the county. In the past, the organization has taken in animals that were found as far south as Wakefield, and Shank has assisted wildlife centers in other counties by taking in one of their rescues. “We want people to just come out, be happy and enjoy Groundhog Day,” Shank said. “This all started to get people smiling, even from behind a mask. We’re still doing that.” For more information, visit www.acornacreswr .com/groundhog-day.
