Masonic Village Recognized For Wellness Programs BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Wellness is at the heart of everything that happens at Masonic Village at Elizabethtown. Thanks to that mission, the retirement community recently won the Pinnacle and Beacon awards from the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) and NuStep for fostering a wellness-centered environment to benefit residents and employees.

avid Abel describes himself as a visionary. Thanks to his vision, the National Christmas Center will have a new home in Elizabethtown. For almost 20 years, the National Christmas Center operated in Paradise, until owner Jim Morrison closed the business in early 2018. Abel purchased the site’s contents in late 2018, with the plan of opening a new center at Stone Gables Estate in Elizabethtown. The center is scheduled to open in the Barns of Belmont, 1 Hollinger Lane, in a few years. In the meantime, the public will have a chance to see the work-in-progress in its temporary location in Middletown during the Christmas season later this year. “We will be having private viewings by ticket that are open to the public starting at Christmastime,” Abel noted. He anticipates it will take two years to build the center’s new home in Elizabethtown and two years to set up the contents.

When it comes to mental health, sharing stories can help reduce stigma, provide support and offer answers. That’s the hope behind a new blog launched on Mental Health America of Lancaster County’s website. The organization created its new website, https://mhalancaster.org, in November 2020, and it launched the blog in January.

birth of Christ, the new center will feature a boys’ toy store full of models, trains, toy soldiers and more, as well as a girls’ toy store featuring elaborate oversized dollhouses dating to the 1800s. Rooms will be dedicated to Lancaster County history as well and will feature an area that replicates storefronts of Columbia from the past. Abel will be overseeing construction of the center in Middletown, which will be built in a way that makes it easy to take apart and transport to Elizabethtown once the new site is ready. “I am a visionary,” he emphasized. “I can see it, but I can’t build it.” Still, he knows what he envisions will touch the hearts of visitors. “We want to highlight the awe and wonder of Christmas and its traditions,” he noted. “People want nostalgia. We are doing this to bring out the joy Christmas brings to children. We want to bring out the joy in the child in everyone, no matter how old they are.”

“I had visited the National Christmas Center years ago with my children, and I was really sad when I heard it was closing,” Abel stated. “Then I met Jim Morrison, and that got the ball rolling. I believe God ordained that meeting and guided me to make the Christmas Center part of Stone Gables Estate. Our mission is to tell the true meaning of Christmas, so this fits perfectly with that.” In an office building off of Route 230 in Middletown, Abel is busy working with a team of contractors, along with co-curators John Enterline and Morrison, to not only set up the items originally housed in the Christmas Center, but also expand its offerings. “The original National Christmas Center was 20,000 square feet,” Abel noted. “The new one will be 40,000 square feet.” Along with items and displays found in the original center, including a life-size reproduction of a Woolworth store, a vast collection of Santas and scenes depicting the

The ICAA NuStep Pinnacle Award is given to senior living communities in North America that rank among the top five in the Best in Wellness category. The Beacon Award goes to organizations ranked among the top 25 communities. “We had to apply for the awards, including writing a narrative and sending in pictures and publications to support our wellness programs,” said Stacy Schroder, director of wellness and prevention. “We found out we won over the summer, but things were delayed due to COVID, so we were officially recognized in December (2020).” Wellness, Schroder said, is a cornerstone of Masonic Village. “It’s the hub of everything we do,” she noted. “We look at how we can improve the lifestyles of the people who live here as well as the people who work here. ... We want to help everybody be as well as they want to be. We’re passionate about helping employees and residents improve their quality of life.”

“A lot of our website is education-based,” said Caryn Thompson, marketing coordinator for Mental Health America of Lancaster County. “What we’re trying to do with the blog is complement that with personal stories. As far as mental health goes, it’s a topic that’s not just about facts and figures. We can tell you all the stats in the world, but that is not always going to get our point across. Sometimes, the experience of other people educates just as much.” The blog is being written by in-house writers, including Thompson, but will also be open to community submissions. Categories include educational pieces from people including physicians and counselors, personal stories and a creative category. For this last category,

personal stories, that helps reduce the stigma surrounding mental health,” she remarked. “You can see that here is a human being who is living with this diagnosis, but she is still going to work, still feeding her family, still contributing to society. These personal stories can help other people learn what it’s like to live with anxiety or to be bipolar, for example.” Thompson said the blog has a personal connection because she’s the mother of a 20-yearold son who has bipolar disorder. She started writing about her experiences as a parent when he was in middle school, and her writing was shared with other parents. “I know that personal stories can help other people,” she stated. “And if personal stories are engaging, people are more likely to read the educational information on our website and more likely to

These numbers are total cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index. Additionally, women should make healthy behavior changes like moving more, eating smart and managing their blood pressure. Women should know the warning signs of heart attacks and strokes. ET Matmen Wrestle Four Times in Seven Days Just five players cracked the box score for Elizabethtown with Matthew Gilhool posting a team high nine points. SWIMMING The Bear swimmers were in action just once as well, taking on Lampeter-Strasburg on January 26th. The boy’s improved to 3-0 with a 110-60 win while the Lady Bears suffered their first loss, 97-73. “The boys have been flexible and resilient all year. I’m grateful to see their efforts play out in the water,” said head coach Chad Houck of the boy’s win while commenting on the girl’s side by saying, “we knew coming in that we probably wouldn’t have enough this year. With some swimmers out, and a lack of top end scorers, our depth was not enough to carry us past L-S. That said, we had some good times, and learned a few things to set swimmers up for Leagues in February.” Despite posting a comfortable win, the boy’s managed just one more victory than the Lady Bears. That one additional win came in the 200-freestyle relay where Ben and Sam Azzalina joined Andrew Donahue and Wyatt Rachael for the win. Rachael and the Azzalina brothers picked up a second relay win in the 200-medley with help from Riley Runnels. Ben Azzalina also won the 50- and 100-freestyle races. Runnels added a win in the 100-backstroke while Rachael finished things up with his 100-breaststroke victory. Gabby Walsh, Morgan Conway, Genevieve McDonald and Megan Handshew joined forces for the Lady Bears’ lone relay win, taking the 200-medley. Conway went on to claim the 100-freestyle and the 100breaststroke while Walsh grabbed the 100-backstroke and the 100butterfly. BOWLING The bowling team has found their grove, ripping off three more 7-0 wins and improving to 39-10 on the year. Two of those wins came on

back-to-back days with E-town topping Manheim Central on the 21st and Conestoga Valley on the 22nd. The Bears used nine bowlers in their win over Central with Ayden Pope’s 669 series highlighting the sweep. One day later E-town went with just five keglers in an easy win over CV. Alaina Telenko led the way with a 747 series but Zach Deardorff (672), Eryn Moore (629) and Zach Wentzel (625) all joined the 600 club. Daniel Eberle finished the scoring five with a 561 series. A few days later the Bears used a ‘Zach Attack’ to knock down Lebanon. Deardorff (651) and Wentzel (635) were the only two Bears to break 600 during the 7-0 victory. Pope’s 588 came close while Eberle, Moore, Telenko and Derek Deardorff all helped in the win. RIFLE Elizabethtown’s rifle team was in action three times but managed four matches thanks to another COVID double header. E-town’s second double of the year took place on the 21st with the Bears dropping both matches to Governor Mifflin. Both matches needed just five shooters, but Mifflin’s shooters managed to eek out wins of 492489 and 495-493. Luke Turner and Aivery Shuck posted Elizabethtown’s only two 100s for the day. E-town’s other two matches were both against Ephrata but took place on separate days. The Mountaineers posted a 779-778 win on the 20th while Elizabethtown collected a 588-587 win on the 26th. Emma Kreiser led the way in the win with help from Shuck, OrtizKreiner, Emily Bonsall, Kate Kruft and Allison Lowell. Kreiser was one shot away from a second 100 in the loss against Ephrata, settling for a 99 with one center. Instead, it was Bonsall posting the 100 to lead the way with Kyle Lloyd, Lowell, Turner, Shuck, Kruft and Ortiz-Kreiner rounding out the scoring.

The Bears’ Aiden Robinson makes short work of Manheim’s Logan Cade Capello stacks up the Barons’ Jordan Rizzo for a 1:25 fall at Forrest, pinning him in 1:07 at 138 pounds to help E-town to a 42- 145 pounds to add six points to the Bears’ 42-33, Section Two victory at home on January 23. 33, Section Two win over the visiting Barons on January 23.

It is said that idle hands are the devil’s workshop and, if true, the Elizabethtown wrestlers spent the past week making sure the devil would be nowhere near their program. The Bears were in action four times in a seven-day span, going 22 and improving to 4-2 overall. E-town’s most impressive win came on Jan. 23rd where they toppled Manheim Central 42-33. After taking an opening bout forfeit, the Bears ripped off six straight victories, flipping that 6-0 deficit into a 36-6 cushion. Bonus points were the theme of the run that started with a Nathan Thomas forfeit win. Ryan Findlay, Aiden Robinson, Cade Capello and Bobby Walters all followed with pinfall wins while Jake Rudy picked up his bonus points via injury default. Central mounted a comeback, closing the gap to 36-33 after a string of five straight wins but one final forfeit win, this one for Wyatt Mummau sealed the victory. The Bears’ first match of the stretch went down January 20th and Elizabethtown enjoyed some late match luck to post a 33-27 win over neighboring Donegal. The Indians claimed six of the first eight weight classes, building a 27-9 lead. Mummau kick started the Bear comeback with a win at 120 while Thomas followed with a forfeit win at 126, closing the gap to 27-18. Findley kept things moving with his decision at 132 which meant Robinson’s first period pinfall at 138 knotted the match at 27-27. Capello was the final Bear to take the mat and found himself trailing Donegal’s Silas Mumper in the second period but earned the decisive victory when Mumper ran out of injury time. Rudy and Austin Reitmeyer nabbed the two early wins that came during Donegal’s strong open. Wedged between those two victories was a 42-21 loss to

Lampeter-Strasburg on the 22nd. Only four Bears came out victorious against the Pioneers starting with Reitmeyer at 106. Mummau picked up the next win, matching Reitmeyer’s decision and making the score 18-6. Two L-S bonus point wins extended their lead to 28-6 before Robinson halted things with a pinfall win at 138. Rudy tacked on the final E-town team points with a third period pinfall win only to see Lampeter-Strasburg take the final three matches for the 42-21 final. Elizabethtown closed out the stretch on January 26th with a 5315 loss to Garden Spot. The three Etown victories came in back-toback-to-back weight classes starting at 152. It was there that Rudy broke up a seven-match run for the Spartans with a 15-8 win. Hayden Haver and Bobby Walters followed with pinfall wins but Elizabethtown was still trailing 35-15. Spot tacked on three more bonus point wins for the 53-15 final. BOYS’ BASKETBALL An odd, non-COVID scheduling quirk left the boys’ basketball team with just one game over the last week. Unfortunately, that one game was against Warwick and the result was a 56-38 setback that dropped the Bears to 2-3 on the year. Despite an 18-point final margin, the Bears matched the visiting Warriors point for point in the first stanza and hung around through the opening half, trailing just 23-18 at the break. “I was really proud of the guys,” said head coach Lee Eckert. “We came out and had our defensive game plan and held a team that is pretty much leading the league in scoring to eight points in the first quarter. “Warwick is a really good team, there is no sugar coating that,” continued Eckert, “Obviously we’d like to have a better second half, more of a complete game instead of just the first 16 minutes.”
