ow would you tackle the problem of light pollution? If you’re a student in Eric Balak’s gifted classes at Bear Creek School in the Elizabethtown Area School District, you have an answer to that question. Three teams of third- and fourth-graders participated in the Pennsylvania Invention Convention earlier this year, and each team earned a spot in the state competition happening on Feb. 7.
The Light Savers, a fourthgrade team comprising Marley Leggett, Timothy Leaman and Zachary Reever, drew inspiration from a lesson on light pollution in their English Language Arts class. Their invention, the “Light Cocoon,” features flaps attached to a servomotor that can open and close around a streetlight, directing light downward versus into the sky. The Plate Pioneers, a thirdgrade team consisting of Poppy Sands, Kyle Southard, Jacob Pierdon and Charlotte
Rosborough, revolutionized the standard school food tray with their creation, “Smart Tray.” The tray incorporates color coding, labeling and sensor pressures with LED lights to promote healthier eating habits at school. Recyclified, another thirdgrade team composed of Liesel Keller and Fianna Clark, devised a solution to promote and gamify recycling practices at school. Their invention involves a circuit button per grade level, adding a point on a connected scoreboard every time the button is pressed.
For the competition, the teams created a prototype to address a real-world problem of their choosing, kept an invention log and crafted a pitch video for the judges. The students compete on Feb. 7 at the Hershey Lodge with others from across the state, and one team from that competition will progress to the national level. Balak, who is in his first year teaching at Bear Creek, pitched the idea of competing in the Invention Convention to all 47 of his students. The nine students who chose to participate formed

Tackling real-world problems
Last fiscal year, Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS) provided ser vices to more than 880 households in the northwest region of Lancaster County, said Natalie Dixon, development director for the Elizabethtown-based nonprofit. All services are provided free of charge to clients. You can help support the mission of ECHOS by attending the ECHOS of Hope Gala. The event will take place on Saturday, April 13, at Brossman Ballroom at Masonic Villages, 71 Freemason Drive, from 6 to 10 p.m. The evening will begin with a cocktail hour and silent auction, Dixon noted. “The cocktail hour will also feature a fun photo booth sponsored by FX Photo Booths,” she said. “There will be hors d’oeuvres as well as an open bar sponsored by Grandview Vineyard.” The event will also feature the second year of the Champagne & Diamonds activity. Sponsored by Andrew Douglas Jewelers, this portion of the evening will include a champagne wall filled with 100 glasses. “Ninety-nine of the glasses will hold a cubic zirconia and one will have a real diamond,” Dixon shared. “A qualified jeweler will be on-hand to inspect the gems and find the lucky winner of the real diamond. The winner will be announced later in the evening and will be able to exchange their diamond for a piece of jewelry valued at $2,500 to $3,000.”

fundraiser offering beautifully filled Longaberger baskets.” As people enjoy the meal and peruse the baskets, which will be available via giveaway drawings, New Orleans jazz music will add to the atmosphere, McCleary said. Holding the event on the Tuesday before the beginning of Lent is intentional, she noted. “Shrove Tuesday is a Christian festival celebrated in many countries across the globe,” she explained. “Shrove Tuesday is when the larders are emptied of baking supplies, as during Lent, Christians give up luxuries to remember when Jesus went into the desert for 40 days to fast and pray.” McC lear y added that people in other countries mark the date with their o w n c e l e b ra t i o n s . “ I n Germany, for example, it’s called Fastnacht’ - meaning of the Fast’ - and in Iceland it’s called Sprengidagur’ meaning Bursting Day,’” she shared. “In France and some other parts of the world, the festival is called Mardi Gras’ from the French phrase meaning Fat Tuesday.’ And for many people, Mardi Gras means party time!” She hopes that people will bring that spirit to the meal at St. Luke. “Saint Luke Episcopal Church is a small congregation of fun-loving people who welcome ever yone, no exceptions , with open arms and warm hearts,” she commented. “During the Mardi Gras celebration, tours of the historic church building will be offered, as well as private prayer for those in need, by the Rev. Martha Harris.” Church parking is available on the street, and there is an elevator for easy access to both the social hall and the sanctuar y. Tickets for the meal may be ordered by calling or texting Gail Fridy at 717-5380810. A few tickets will be available at the door as well. For more information on community events and worship opportunities at the church, search for “St. Luke’s Episcopal Church (Mt. Joy, PA)” on Facebook.

Bear Creek from pg 1 their own teams and brainstormed their inventions together. “We noticed that when the trash bins were in the hallway in the morning after breakfast, they were really full, and we wanted to make them go down,” said Liesel, a member of the Recyclified team. “We also noticed that the milk cartons said ‘Please recycle’ on them, and they were being thrown in the trash every day. We wanted to change that.” The Plate Pioneers also wanted to solve a problem at school, said team member Charlotte. “ We looked at the trays and we wondered, ‘Are kids getting a healthy meal?’” she explained. “We came up with our smart tray and we also color-coded the food bar, so kids know which item to match on the tray.” Balak said he was feeling confident about the projects going into the competition, but he was pleasantly surprised when all three teams qualified for the state event. the teams will present their ideas in person, so they’ve been working on a one-minute elevator pitch, Balak said. “We’ve been preparing by watching some ‘Shark Tank’ videos,” he said. No matter how the state competition goes, the kids all enjoyed creating their inventions. “I liked building the actual product,” Charlotte said. “I also liked doing research on it.” Added Liesel, “The hardest part was figuring out what our invention was going to be. Our original idea was to solve climate change, but that was too big. But, in the long run, our invention is about recycling, so that will help with climate change.” scan this code for more local news townlively.com

wrapped baked goods made by the women of the parish will also be available for purchase each Friday as well as a variety of drinks. As Storm explained, the fish fry tradition began at the church as a way to honor a Catholic dietary restriction during the season of Lent. “Jesus died on Good Friday, so Catholics and other religions refrain from eating meat in His honor on Fridays. It is a form of penance,” she explained. “The tradition is to abstain from meat, not necessarily to eat fish.” The fish fry is a fundraiser for the Parish Council of Catholic Women, Storm said, noting that proceeds will benefit various activities in the parish, Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School, Water for Life and other nonprofits. Congregation members begin prepping each meal the day before, making crab cakes and setting up, Storm remarked. The men of the parish assist with the setup, cleanup, heavy lifting, washing dishes and working in the kitchen. Reser vations are not required for the fish fry. There are two parking lots at the church as well as parking on the street. “Enjoy a tasty, filling meal at a reasonable price,” Storm said, encouraging people to come to the fish fry. “You just never know who you may meet there as people from Columbia and surrounding areas come to enjoy good food and to socialize.”

Love - and barbecue - is in the air BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community has a legacy of caring for seniors and people with disabilities, regardless of their ability to pay. The Rapho Township facility relies on community support to fulfill its mission, and it re g ularly holds fundraising meals to help cover the costs of care. The fourth annual Sweetheart To-Go Benefit Meal will be held at LCBC - Manheim Campus, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim, on Saturday, Feb. 24, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The curbside pickup meal will include Peters’ Barbecue
fire-grilled chicken, gourmet cheese potatoes, saucy baked beans with bacon, applesauce, a dinner roll with butter and a dessert. “At our core, we’re known to have a reputation as a caring, supportive community providing quality nursing care that focuses on providing dignity, hope and love regardless of someone’s changing financial or personal circumstances,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement. “February is known as the month of love. It’s when we celebrate and remember those we cherish. Mt. Hope tries to provide an option for families who have loved ones who are married.
Charlene and Dervin Hart
Being able to move in mom and dad at the same time, as a couple, is the sweetest act of care for a family.” In fact, the campus is currently home to four married couples, Wilson noted. Dervin and Charlene Hart, who live independently in a cottage, have been married for 58 years. “ They both worked at Victor F. Weaver in the chicken plant but did not know each other,” Wilson shared. “As a true love story goes, Dervin caught a g limpse of C harlene with a group of giggling girls from across the office room. Dervin said to himself, That girl is beautiful, and I am going to meet her.’ Dervin devised a plan where their paths would cross at work. They got to know one another and fell in love.” Dervin has carried his wedding picture in his wallet since 1966, Wilson commented, and Charlene said she will never forget t he i r w i nte r we dd i n g. “When asked to remember her favorite date, Charlene recalled, O ur wedding day, of course! Hope is appreciative for the generous community support.” Preorders will be taken for meals and saved under the name provided when ordered. To preorder, call Wilson at 717-682-8026 or email advancement@ mthopenazarene.org by Saturday, Feb. 17. Extra meals will be available while supplies last.
