Northwest EMS Holds Food Drive BY CATHY MOLITORIS

According to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, almost 75,000 people in Lancaster County are food insecure. One in five children in the county lacks consistent access to enough food to live an active and healthy life. Northwest EMS is working to address this problem.

Rachel Barnhart, a crisis response counselor with ECHOS, has worked with more than 40 Elizabethtown Area School District students so far this school year.

Helping Teens In Crisis BY CATHY MOLITORIS

here is no doubt this past year has been challenging for everyone. It has been particularly hard on teens, said Rachel Barnhart. She knows firsthand what students have been facing because she’s been working with middle-schoolers and high-schoolers at Elizabethtown Area School District as a crisis response counselor since the school year began. She is employed by Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS) but contracted through the district. “My job came into place because of the rise in crises in schools,” she noted. “School counselors couldn’t keep up with the numbers, and also their position really focuses on other things.” While school counselors may meet with students to go over class schedules and sometimes touch on emotional issues, that’s not their main job responsibility, she said. “When they see a student with suicidal ideation or homicidal

and provided more than 70 hours of crisis counseling. “This year has been really tough for teens,” she said. “The pandemic has brought an increase in isolation, depression and anxiety.” Barnhart noted that her position is important not only because it serves students in need, but also because she can help keep students out of hospitals. “I get to reduce over-hospitalization, especially when it comes to conversations about suicidal ideation,” she explained. “I’m able to prevent this in the middle of a pandemic when hospitals are already being flooded for other reasons.” She said this position has taught her not only that there’s a need for her services, but also that students are stronger than she expected. “I’ve never been so impressed with teenagers and their resiliency and ability to adapt,” she remarked. “This has not in any way been an easy year, but they are doing it, and I’m proud of them. I’m honored to work with them and be a part of their journey.”

Take A Pledge Against Underage Drinking BY CATHY MOLITORIS

By taking a pledge, parents can help put an end to underage drinking in Elizabethtown. That’s the mission behind No One’s House, a new initiative launched by Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC). “No One’s House is a parentfocused campaign that is working to educate parents about the

“I’ll refer them to outpatient therapy or, if they need inpatient, I’ll refer them there. Then, I’m here to help them when they come back.” Hired in July, Barnhart has seen a steady increase in the number of students she’s working with. In the first four months of the 2020-21 school year, she worked with 43 students, conducted 112 sessions

For the month of February, the organization is holding its annual food drive to benefit local food banks. Donations will be accepted at the Elizabethtown EMS station, 380 W. Bainbridge St., or at the Manheim EMS station, 60 W. Colebrook St. “Our first food drive was in February of 2015,” said Lori Shenk, community outreach manager. “The February food drive, like many of our other outreach initiatives, is an opportunity to connect with individuals in the communities that we serve in hopes that we can impact individual health and community health.” Northwest EMS serves 12 townships and three boroughs, covering more than 200 square miles of response area in Lancaster, Dauphin and Lebanon counties. Thousands of audience members did not get the opportunity to visit Mount Gretna last summer to enjoy professional theater performances. Now, after a year of dark stages, Gretna Theatre will kick off its 2021 season with a free livestreamed performance for the community. On Saturday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m., Gretna Theatre will present a program titled “Still Here.” Performances will highlight some of the theater’s past productions and feature prior Gretna Theatre actors. The theme touches on the idea that even though audiences cannot meet in person, Gretna Theatre is still present to entertain, engage, educate, and transform - just in new and different ways. This evening serves as a fundraiser replacement for the canceled October gala and summer season, where the organization could not obtain its traditional revenue. The performance will be accompanied by a virtual auction of unique experiences donated by local supporting businesses, and viewers can offer donations to help support Gretna Theatre begin its next season. The theater has had to furlough nearly all its employees and delay productions on a massive scale. It continues serving the community as a nonprofit through adapted arts education programs offered virtually to schools and community centers.

Readers may visit www.gretna.givesmart.com to register for the event, preview auction items, and see which local businesses are supporting the future of Gretna Theatre. The onehour performance will also be broadcast on Gretna Theatre’s Facebook page. As a way to upgrade the experience while offering support to Gretna Theatre’s education programs, viewers can purchase a VIP guest pass, which comes with a handcurated appetizer box from Graze Lancaster available for pickup.

Church To Offer Free Chili, Soup Ruhl’s United Methodist Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, will offer free chili and bacon corn chowder soup for takeout on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 10 a.m. to noon or until the food runs out. The chili and the bacon corn chowder soup will be homemade in the church kitchen. The chili recipe is mild, not hot and spicy. Refrigerated soup will be distributed in takeout containers, and community members may drive up to the carport to pick up the food. It will be available on a firstcome, first-served basis, so no reservations are needed. Pint and quart containers will be available depending on family size, and there will be a twoquart maximum per vehicle to enable the church to bless more people. The purpose of the event is to share the love of Jesus. The church previously held a soup takeout event in January and gave away all 175 quarts of chicken corn noodle soup in 30 minutes. The church is planning for more attendees at the upcoming event. A free takeout ham dinner is being planned for Saturday, March 27. Reservations will be required, and details will be announced later.

importance of not providing alcohol to teens, not even in your own house,” explained Allison Bridgeman, assistant director of EACTC. “A lot of parents think they want to provide a safe environment for teens to drink, or it’s not a big deal to let some teens drink at their home, but this program is working to change that mindset.” No One’s House is a parent-to-parent campaign, meaning Bridgeman hopes parents will talk to each other about it and increase participation. “We want to encourage parents to talk to their teens about underage drinking and talk to each other,” she stated. “We want them to say, ‘It’s not OK for my teen to drink in my house. I know they are coming over to your house. Do you have conversations about underage drinking there?’” To participate, parents sign an online pledge against allowing teens to drink at their house. Other parents can view the names of those who have signed. No One’s House fits well with the mission of EACTC, Bridgeman noted, adding, “We are a prevention-oriented organization. We work to build up protective factors and decrease risk factors.” The organization has been serving the Elizabethtown

SPORTSMEN’S BANQUET Saturday, March 6th, 2021 Doors will open at 3:30 p.m. Banquet begins at 4:00 p.m.

community for more than 20 years and works to improve the lives of children, youths and families. Bridgeman was motivated to start No One’s House after learning about its effectiveness in other communities and after reviewing results of the Pennsylvania Youth Survey, which surveys students in sixth, eighth, 10th and 12th grades. “We know from this data that 62% of sixth-grade students who have used alcohol said their parents gave it to them,” she said. “Parents think, ‘They’re going to try it anyway, so I should provide a safe environment to try it in my home.’ This campaign is about talking to your kids and saying, ‘I don’t think it’s OK for you to drink alcohol under the age of 21.’” Not only is underage drink-

ing illegal, but it also can have devastating consequences, Bridgeman stated. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, teen alcohol use kills 4,700 people a year, more than all illegal drugs combined. Nine out of 10 people with alcohol addiction started using before they were 18 years old. “What we really want parents to know is that providing teens with alcohol is not positive for teens. It’s not helping them in any way,” Bridgeman stated. “ We all as parents want to help our kids be as healthy as possible, and that includes having those conversations about alcohol use.” To learn more about No One’s House or to sign the pledge, readers may visit https://eactc.org/programs -initiatives/nooneshouse.

Giant Joins GreenChill Program, Wins Award The Giant Company recently announced it has joined the GreenChill program, a voluntary U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) partnership with food retailers, refrigeration system manufacturers and chemical manufacturers to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their environmental impacts. As a program partner, GreenChill provides the Giant Company and other industry stakeholders with information and assistance to transition to environmentallyfriendly refrigerants, reduce the amount of refrigerant they use, eliminate refrigerant leaks, implement environmental best practices and adopt green refrigeration technologies. There are more

than 12,500 GreenChill partner stores throughout the country. The Giant Company is currently performing refrigerant conversions, installing leak detectors and replacing older refrigeration units when possible within its nearly 190 stores. For more information on the EPA’s GreenChill Program, readers may visit www.epa.gov/greenchill. The Giant Company also announced that it has been awarded the 2020 Gold Plate Award by the FMI Foundation in the COVID-19 Heroes category. This category, which is new to the annual awards program, recognizes charitable programs that help families share meals together during the pandemic.

The Giant Company accepted its 2020 Gold Plate Award for its program “The Giant Company Is for Today’s Table” during National Family Meals Month at the virtual FMI Midwinter Executive Conference on Jan. 26. This is the second Gold Plate Award for the Giant Company; it was recognized in 2018 for its “Power of One More Family Meal” campaign. During National Family Meals Month last September, the Giant Company launched its For Today’s Table brand platform, which included refreshed uniforms and store décor, merchandising innovations and more. Customers were encouraged to share photos of their family connecting over a meal on social

media using #ForTodaysTable during the month. For every photo shared, the Giant Company donated the cash equivalent to provide 100 meals to neighbors in need. In addition, ads were developed featuring real families with footage of their daily lives, including mealtime, for television and radio spots. The Giant Company distributed red tables, benches and picnic blankets throughout the community and to area food banks. On Sept. 26, 2020, National Family Day, the first 100 customers in stores also received a picnic blanket. The Giant Company rewarded its own team members, as well, providing $100 in Grocery Dollars to each of its 35,000 team members.
