Honoring a civil rights leader
BY CATHY MOLITORISIn the early days of the civil rights movement, William Miller Barbour stood out for addressing the racial and ethnic discrimination in housing and employment. “Although Barbour’s name is not well known, his ideas shaped the vision of the civil rights leaders who emerged in the 1950s and 1960s,” said Jean-Paul Benowitz, director of Prestigious Scholarships and Fellowships and Public Heritage Studies at Elizabethtown College.
Working with two graduates, Benowitz hopes to bring Barbour’s name into the spotlight it deserves.
Benowitz is joined by history program graduates Eric Schubert and Abigail Sholes in writing an
article about Barbour for publication in academic journals. The group is also hoping to present information about Barbour during Elizabethtown College’s 125th anniversary in the 2024-25 academic year.
“It has been extremely rewarding to sort through the dozens of public addresses, letters and documents related to Barbour.”
Benowitz describes Barbour, who lived from 1908 to 1957, as a man who made a lasting impact. Barbour was one of the first Black college graduates in the area; the first Black student-athlete to play college football in Lancaster County; the first executive secretary for the National Urban League in Denver,
Colo.; and the first director of the National Urban League Western Field Office in Los Angeles. Benowitz first considered a piece on Barbour in 2018, when now-retired college librarian Peter DePuydt shared his findings about the civil rights leader as part of a Black History Month project. The pandemic put the article on hold, but in 2022, Benowitz invited Schubert and Sholes to join the project and move forward with the article.
The then-students conducted research on Barbour in 2022 and 2023 and started work on the
article during the current school year. The article will be ready to submit to journal editors this summer.
“It has been extremely rewarding to sort through the dozens of public addresses, letters and documents related to Barbour … to start to put his life story together in a greater perspective and narrative,” said Schubert, a member of the Class of 2023.
Sholes, also a member of the Class of 2023, said their research has revealed the man behind the accomplishments.
“We’ve had the privilege of getting to know Barbour through these documents,” she stated. “In our research, Eric and I have uncovered many fascinating records and papers which have allowed us to weave
BY CATHY MOLITORISWatching a documentary about the lack of women’s rights around the world more than a decade ago, Audra Peifer felt moved to act. In 2012, she started Binding Love Scarves, a ministry that sells handmade scarves with proceeds benefiting Christian-based homes for girls in Thailand. Now you can help support the ministry at a Binding Love workshop in Elizabethtown.
The workshop will be held on Sunday, March 17, from noon to 3 p.m. at Naturally Gifted by Jeri, 1 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. Participants will have the opportunity to design their own scarf at the “make and take” event, with 50% of the cost for each scarf donated to the girls’ homes. “I will provide the fabrics and participants will select the pieces they want to make into their scarf,” explained Dory Impink, Lancaster coordinator of Binding Love Scarves. Participants will have assistance in laying out the scarf, and scarves will be sewn off-site, ready for pickup at the store by Saturday, March 23. Impink said people should plan to spend 30 minutes to an hour at the workshop.
Each scarf is made from upcycled clothing purchased at thrift stores or donated by individuals and organizations. “So much clothing is wasted in our country, but this gives those shirts, skirts and sweaters new life and an opportunity to make a difference,” Peifer said. The fabric is cut into patterns
Event will benefit Susquehanna Waldorf School
BY CATHY MOLITORISWhen they started planning this year’s banquet and benefit auction, the committee members at Susquehanna Waldorf School chose a name - Gather Aroundthat reflects the school’s mission.
“This is a message of togetherness as we gather to support Susquehanna Waldorf School and the community that relies on us,” explained Courtney Kokus, development and marketing director.
Gather Around will be held on Saturday, March 2, from 6 to 10 p.m. at John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville.
The evening will feature a catered meal by John Wright Restaurant, live music, a wine toss, and both a silent and a live auction.
“We will have a large array of art, local experiences, handmade products and custom offerings, including themed dinners and a murder mystery night,” Kokus said of the items featured in the auction.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the school, located at 15 W. Walnut St., Marietta. Kokus explained that Susquehanna Waldorf
School, which serves students in prekindergarten through eighth grade, is affectionately known as “The School by the River.”
“Our independent school is dedicated to fostering a deep and enduring passion for learning, with a focus on nurturing the holistic development of each child through their educational journey,” she stated. “What makes us truly unique is our adherence to the principles of Waldorf education. Our approach goes beyond academics, emphasizing the development of the whole child. Our curriculum integrates the arts, movement and experiential
learning, time in nature, ensuring a well-rounded education that nurtures creativity, critical thinking and a sense of wonder.” Waldorf education began in the early 20th century, based on the principles of artist and scientist Rudolf Steiner. Today, there are more than 1,000 Waldorf schools in 64 countries around the world.
Susquehanna Waldorf School has been serving students in York, Lancaster and Dauphin counties for more than 35 years, and it currently enrolls more than 130 students. It relies on events like Gather Around to continue providing ser-
vices to students.
“The proceeds will support the gap between our tuition and the amount it takes to run the school,” Kokus shared. “We also have a special appeal to support increasing the funding for our professional development fund, which is used to fund the many trainings our teachers attend, some of which are held out of the country.”
For more information on the banquet and to view or bid on auction items, visit www.betterunite.com /susquehannawaldorf school-gatheraround. The online auction will end at 8 p.m. on March 2.

by volunteers, who also create the scarves. The finished products are sold in local shops and online to benefit Eden House and House of Refuge in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Both homes provide sanctuary for at-risk girls ages 5 to 17, offering a safe place to live, education, food, Bible teaching and more.
Over the years, Binding Love has sent more than $40,000 to the homes, supporting hundreds of girls. “None of our volunteers receive any payment for their services, even me as the founder,” Peifer explained. “This has always been and always will be about making a difference and bringing hope to the girls in Thailand.”
Binding Love held a similar scarf workshop in Columbia in January, and the response was very
positive, Impink said. “We sold out all the available registration slots and had a few walk-ins,” she recalled. “Many people loved it so much and asked if we were going to do this again. So, that’s why we scheduled this workshop.”
At the Elizabethtown workshop, Impink hopes participants will take away an understanding of Binding Love’s mission along with a one-of-a-kind scarf.
“It’s a great opportunity to … see it come together in a unique accessory that only you will have,” she said. “It’s a fun way to express your personal style and support a worthwhile cause at the same time.”
She added that the organization is always looking for new opportunities to sell the scarves on a consignment basis, with the product currently available

together Barbour’s story in a way that hasn’t been recognized in several decades.”
Schubert said their research also highlights a man full of passion.
“Something that stands out to me most is Barbour’s enthusiasm toward many of his projects, no matter the subject,” he explained.
“Whether it was on the debate team, in a play, on the football field or in his chosen vocation, he was known for it and was someone people respected.
Abigail and I have seen many flattering notes and write-ups, and I love that!”
Sholes agreed, adding that she noted a common theme among Barbour’s accolades.
“One thing that remains true about Barbour throughout his life - from his college years to his position as a field director of the National Urban League - was his commitment to community,” she said, adding that prior to his work with the National Urban League, Barbour was a social worker in Philadelphia, aiming to prevent gang violence and promote the arts. “Everywhere he went, even prior to his involvement with the National Urban League, Barbour proved to be a charismatic leader committed to creating change. … Barbour never lost sight of his passion for helping others.”

School celebrates winter graduates
Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) hosted its Class of 2024 Winter Commencement Ceremony on Feb. 7. Fourteen graduates, accompanied by their families and school administrators, took part in the small ceremony and walked across the stage to receive their diplomas.
These students were among a total of 38 seniors who met the criteria for early graduation and opted to graduate in the winter rather than waiting until the end of the school year. Winter graduation eligibility required students to enroll early in college or a trade school, embark on full-time employment, or enlist in the military.
At the ceremony, superintendent Karen Nell welcomed the students and their guests. School board
president Stephen Lindemuth shared a message of hope, and EAHS principal Jason D’Amico encouraged the graduates to pursue their aspirations. EAHS mid-year graduate Ellyse Shenk provided a student perspective on the high school journey, reminiscing on the memories and lessons learned at EAHS.
In addition to Shenk, the students participating in the ceremony were Aiden Bell, Logan Derr,
Brett Garber, Elijah Gonzalez-Serrano, Mia Kecki, Luke La, Carson Lewis, Caleb McNitt, Ryan Morrell, Devon Roush, Tyler Sonntag, Falyn Swift, and Lindsi Umbrell.
The additional early graduates were Zachary Boyer, Hunter Corty, Troy Derstler, Jayden Germer, Caleb Griffie, Morgan Johns, Katie Keeports, Haley Kelley, Addison Lee, Draven Leonard, Paulina Maya, Lacee Miller, Lilianna
Milligan, Jonah Perrin, Allison Sauder, James Harvey Smith, Bronsyn Spickler, Landon Sturgill, Sonam Tamang, Maggie Tritt, Jesse Wagner, Gwendelyn Weeks, Abbey Whitman, and Cordelia Williams.
This is the third consecutive year that the school district has hosted a winter graduation ceremony.
