Bringing joy to hospitalized children
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
It’sno fun for a child to be in the hospital, but thanks to Northwest EMS, pediatric hospital staysare a little happier. Northwest EMS collects toys for Child Life, an initiative that provides new toys to children who are hospitalized.
Northwest EMS started the partnership with Child Life in 2021. “Our office manager, Luci, had a granddaughter in the hospital in November and December of 2020, and visits were limited,” explained Lori Shenk, community outreach manager for Northwest EMS. “Her granddaughter, Taylor, had a lot of anxiety about being there, but every day that Taylor was in the hospital, members of the Child Life team would visit her. They played cards with her, did puzzles, played board games, and they developed a friendship with her.” Taylor got to keep every

“Times are hard on a lot of people. Nobody should have to decide between feeding themselves or their pets,” said Heather Buller-Grady. Determined to help, the Mount Joy woman took action. In January, she opened a free pet pantry at her house, 210 Mount Joy St., where anyone can pick up cat food, dog food, pellet litter and even toys for their pets.
toy and game she received during her stay.
“The Child Life team members would come in and distract her during procedures, and their presence made the biggest difference for her,” Shenk said. The then-10-yearold mentioned Child Life to her grandmother and suggested it might be a project Northwest EMS would like to take on.
All four Northwest EMS stations - in Maytown, Brickerville, Elizabethtown and Manheimparticipate in the program. Toys are collected year-round at the stations, and Shenk delivers the collection to Penn State Health Children’s Hospital and Lancaster General Hospital throughout the year.
“Doing something like Child Life is important to us, because we want to support our community,” Shenk shared. She noted that the stations are always accepting donations of new, unwrapped toys for children
age 17 and under. “It’s easy to pick up a toy to donate, and people should not just think about what their child would like, but think about something any child would like,” she recommended. “The dollar store and other discount stores are excellent places to get activity books or craft supplies.” Other suggested donations include board books, Legos, dolls, DVDs, video games and Play-Doh.
“When someone drops off a donation, they should be sure to tell the person who receives it at the station that it’s for Child Life,” Shenk stated.
Northwest EMS stations are located in Maytown, 186 Rock Point Road; Brickerville, 10 Hopeland Road, Lititz; Elizabethtown, 380 W. Bainbridge St.; and Manheim, 60 W. Colebrook St.
For more information on the Child Life program or on making a donation, contact Shenk at 717371-8282 or lshenk@nwems86.org.
Buller-Grady got the idea for the free pantry during COVID, when she had trouble finding pet food for her own pets. “Sometimes our animals liked it, and other times, not so much,” she said. “I decided rather than waste it, maybe someone could use it.” She’s also active with trap, neuter and return (TNR) of feral cats in her community. “I had noticed while doing TNR in Mount Joy, I was finding several friendly cats,” she recalled. “I kept wondering if they had been released outside to find their own food. Could people not afford to keep them? My hope is to help people in need or

who are just having a hard time for that moment and help people not have to choose between the food they need and the food their animals might need.”
After setting up a donation box on her porch, Buller-Grady put out a call on Facebook asking for donations. “The response was great, and I have yet to run empty,” she said. “I break down the large bags of food into gallonsize Ziploc bags so it could help more people.” Bags are labeled to note if they contain dog food or cat food.
The pantry is open all the time, she said. “The porch light turns off around midnight, but just stop by and get what you need,” she stated. “I run it on the honor system and no questions asked. No need to feel embarrassed.”
Although the pantry is located in Mount Joy, Buller-Grady noted that it’s open to anyone in surrounding communities, including Manheim, Elizabethtown, Bainbridge, Maytown and Marietta.
“In this economy, it takes a village,” she remarked. “If we as a community can help relieve someone else’s stress of just helping to feed their pets, hopefully it can keep pets in their homes and out of shelters or released on the streets.”
She noted that all donations of any size are appreciated, adding, “If the food you got your pet isn’t working, please consider donating it. Someone else could surely use it.”
Donations may be dropped off at 210 Mount Joy St., Mount Joy. For more information, email Mtjoypetfoodpantry@gmail.com.

dollars. Each prosthetic can cost between $5,000 and $50,000.
Last year’s dance party, held at The Village Nightclub, raised close to $10,000, a goal Laukhuff hopes to meet again this year. Additional fundraisers for the organization include a golf tournament and a car show.
Laukhuff noted that Iron-Leg is looking for board members who have a passion for making a difference in a child’s life. “If you have a heart for community and a desire to give back, we’d love to talk to you,” he said.
In the meantime, he hopes to draw a good crowd to the dance party, adding, “It’s winter, and we’ve all been cooped up inside. Get out of the house and come to a party.”
The dance party is for people age 21 and older. Tickets may be purchased for a discount by using a QR code found on Iron-Leg’s Facebook page. Tickets will also be available the door. For more information, visit www.ironleg.org.

E-town matmen earn five medals at sectionals
BY ERIC PYLES
They may not be on the same level as the annual NCAA Men’s Basketball bracket but in central Pennsylvania you will be hard pressed to find a more soughtafter bracket than the ones released for the District 3 boy’s wrestling championships.
The championship march started on February 18th with mid-state grapplers scattered throughout the region for the sectional portion of the District 3 Championship. For Elizabethtown that meant a trip Southeast to Landisville where Hempfield was playing host to 14 other schools. E-town sent 11 wrestlers and returned with five medals, good enough for seventh place in the final team standings, just 0.5 points behind Manheim Township.
Aiden Robinson earned the top Bear finish, working his way to silver in the 152-pound championship. Robinson’s lone setback came in the final with Central Dauphin’s Ryan Garvick collecting gold, forcing Robinson to settle for second. The senior was able to top Penn Manor’s Joshua Zook as well as Palmyra’s Mason Bucks before the Garvick loss.
Elizabethtown brought one bronze home from Hempfield with Nathan Thomas rebounding after a 133-pound quarterfinal loss with four straight wins and a third place finish. That quarterfinal loss was to Manheim Township’s Zach Landis in extra time. From there Thomas
ripped off wins over Cody Hess (Manheim Central), Avery Vogelbacher (McCaskey) and Zy McCainMurray (Hempfield) setting up a rematch with Landis. The rematch, along with the bronze medal, went to Thomas by a 9-2 final.
Ryan Findlay found himself in the consolation finals in the 145-pound bracket but was unable to post the win, settling for fourth place thanks to a loss to Warwick’s Bryn Hess. After opening with a win over Lampeter-Strasburg’s Josh Heisey, Findlay saw his title hopes dashed by Central Dauphin’s Matt Repos. A bounce back win over McCaskey’s Jessiah Jimenez set up the Hess meeting.
Bradley Candy went 3-2 at 215, finishing fourth after a consolation final loss to Milton Hershey’s Tyler Quinter. Candy also opened with a loss, this one to Donegal’s Daniel Viselli but was able to collect wins over Nicky Bruno (Hempfield), Tate Mahkel (Warwick) and Luke Nye (Central Dauphin) for a winning record on the day.
The final Bear to make the podium was Austin Reitmeyer and he opened his march through the 127pound bracket with a bye. The senior followed with a win over Palmyra’s Xavier Hoffer only to drop his semifinal match to Central Dauphin’s Liam Flanagan. A solid win over Hershey’s Ben Farr led to the consolation final loss to Manheim Central’s Barrett Keiffer.
Two E-town grapplers, Hayden Best (114) and Devin Forney (160), found the trip to Landisville difficult,
leading to a winless day. Three of the remaining four Bears ended up with just one win each while Collin Huggins went 2-2 at 189-pounds. Ryan Hottenstein (285), Francis Burke (121) and Kai Laszakovits (139) were the trio of one win Bears. BOWLING
The postseason continued for the bowling team with the singles tournaments taking center stage. The Lady Bears bowled on February 16th while the boys went a day later.
The Lady Bears sent seven bowlers to Palmyra to take part in the six-game qualifying round. Ella Eberle tallied 1112 pins over those six games, slotting her fourth in the stepladder finals. That meant a first round match-up opposite Penn Manor’s Eva Brubaker that went to Brubaker 165-148, leaving Eberle seventh in the final standings. Kendra Griffie (13th), Miranda Davis (15th), Ava McAlonis (19th), Maya Laboy (27th), Lily Troutman (28th) and Candice Bixler (34th) completed the Lady Bear fleet.
On the boys’ side only four Bears made the trip to Leisure Lanes on the 17th but three of them finished inside the top 10 in the six-round qualifying, giving Elizabethtown roughly one-third of the boys’ finalists. Declan Lentz was the lone kegler to fall short of the finals, finishing 45th in the qualifying round.
Zach Wentzel was the top Etown bowler, finishing third in both the qualifying round and the final standings. His 1213 qualifying count set up a first round match with Cocalico’s Jared Ferguson with Wentzel posting a 240-168 win. Conestoga Valley’s Daniel Subers was the next to fall with Wentzel’s teammate, Derek Deardorff the final victim. Manheim Township’s Nick Tomlinson ended Wentzel’s run on his way to the L-L title.
Deardorff, courtesy of that loss to Wentzel, ended up fourth in the final standings, holding steady from his qualifying slot. He managed wins over Columbia’s Dominic
Lenhart as well as teammate Mason Moore.
Moore used an opening round win over Conestoga Valley’s Ryan Muckle to flip his eighth-place
qualifying mark into a fifth-place finish in the final standings. The loss to Deardorff followed, putting Bears in third, fourth and fifth in the final standings.

“The outdoor show really showcases a great variety of vendors,” said Brandon Crouser, DFCA president. “We have everything from fishing and hunting to local artists and local companies.” The show will also feature presentations from Katie Hollen of the Lebanon County Conservation District, Keith Williams from the Lancaster Conservancy and a representative of BreakLine Charters, who will discuss fishing for catfish. “The big attraction that I’m very excited about is between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The folks from Reptile Invasion are coming with all of their
amazing little creatures,” Crouser commented.
The show is free to attend, but all proceeds will go toward continuing restoration work on the Donegal Creek, supporting the club’s cooperative nursery and funding its annual kids’ fishing derby, held later in the spring. “This is our first post-pandemic show, and we are looking forward to having the community come out and enjoy the day with local talent from the community,” Crouser stated. “You can purchase items from vendors, purchase (giveaway)
Scots-Irish music trio plans celebration
Local Scots-Irish trio Fire in the Glen will perform at Shank’s Tavern, 36 S. Waterford Ave., Marietta, on Saturday, March 4, to celebrate the release of the band’s seventh fulllength CD. The CD release party is scheduled from 1:30 to 4 p.m. There is no cover charge.
Fire in the Glen consists of Amanda Wells on vocals and guitar, Tom
Knapp on fiddle and bodhran, and Rod Nevin on bagpipes, whistles, and vocals. The performance will include a mix of traditional Irish and Scottish songs and tunes, including selections from Fire in the Glen’s new album, “Cutting Bracken,” which will be available for purchase at the event.

tickets to pick items from the donation table or just enjoy the demonstrations and Harvey’s BBQ.”
Club member Harvey Schademan, owner of Mount Joy-based Harvey’s Main Street BBQ, will provide the barbecue, which will be available as sandwiches or meals. The barbecue is only available by advance purchase, and tickets may be purchased from any member of DFCA by Saturday, March 11.
Not only does the outdoor show highlight a variety of activities, Crouser said, but it is also the DFCA’s biggest fundraiser. “We hope we get people to sign up for a DFCA yearly membership as they come in and help support our trout nursery program,” he commented. “That enables us to keep stocking these local creeks with trout and put on our kids’ fishing derby.”
For more information on the Spring Outdoor Show, contact Crouser at 717-538-4370 or brandon crouser@gmail.com. More information on DFCA may be found at www.donegalcreek.org or on Facebook by searching for “Donegal Fish & Conservation Association.”

Indoor yard sale will have something for everyone
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Bargains abound at the indoor yard sale at Ruhl’s Church, but the day is about more than just scoring a deal. “I think people like to come and socialize with everyone,” said Barb Dunmire, one of the event volunteers. “We have a lot of the same stand holders year after year, and people come out looking to just talk to each other. It’s fun.”
The 23rd annual indoor yard sale will be held on Saturday, March 11, from 7 to 11 a.m. in the fellowship hall of the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.
More than 30 vendors will sell a variety of items. “The sky’s the limit on what you might see for sale,” said Kris Gray, one of the organizers. “There will be antiques and collectibles, kids’ clothes, toys, household goods, puzzles, truly anything you could think of. You never know what’s going to show up.” The event will also feature food for sale, including egg sandwiches, homemade chicken corn noodle soup, hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches, baked
goods and beverages. A table will again be set up with new and used Bibles and devotional materials for people of all ages, offered for free. “We did that last year, and it was very well received,” Gray stated.
Proceeds from the event, including stand holder donations and food sales, help to fund the missions and ministry activities of the Sunshine Sunday school class. The adult class organizes and distributes food boxes for local families in need at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter and supports the church’s participation in filling shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse at Christmas. The class also hosts a
banquet for senior citizens, sends cards to homebound people, donates winter coats for children and supports three local ministries.
Dunmire said the yard sale is a fun event for everyone, whether they pick up some new items or not. She added, “Come out and have some great food and socialize.”
Doors will not open until 7 a.m. for the sale. Free parking is available in the church’s large lot, and the building is handicapped-accessible. Neither pets nor smoking is permitted inside the building, and masks are optional. For more information, call the church office at 717-665-3400.
