Filling body and soul

Ashared love of food and community brought together three women who are striving to make a difference in Elizabethtown. Madison Synder, Nikita Grove and Cecile Madonna will launch the Elizabethtown Farmers Market Co. (EFM) this spring.

The nonprofit will provide fresh produce along with a gathering space for community members to come together to share information and ideas.

A little over two years ago, Synder and Grove connected after preparing meals for a

friend and lamenting the loss of their favorite community supported agriculture farms, markets and co-ops since both returned to Lancaster County - Synder from a job in North Carolina and Grove from a job in Philadelphia. The pair connected with fellow Elizabethtown College graduate Madonna a few months into the planning process. Soon, the trio realized their backgrounds in business, nutrition and community made the perfect combination for the nonprofit board. Synder serves as president of Elizabethtown Farmers Market Co., while Grove is vice president and Madonna is secretary and treasurer.

The women are still working with Elizabethtown Borough to finalize a space along Market

Street for the market, which they plan to open with a special event in May. More details will be coming soon about the opening, and the market will remain open every first and third Wednesday of the month through October. It will feature locally sourced food items not limited to produce, baked goods and fresh-cut flowers.

“Our vision is to remove access barriers related to income, geography or education,” Madonna said. “We think everyone should have access to fruits, vegetables and goods at their peak freshness and nutritional value. We

also want to support the growth and success of local businesses by highlighting our farmers and vendors.”

Synder noted that farmers markets in general have a positive economic impact, referencing a 2021 Penn State Extension survey that showed that farmers markets in the state generate an estimated $100 million in annual sales.

“The farmers market will also serve to bring the produce to the people,” Grove said. “We are surrounded by so many amazing local producers and yet access is still a barrier. By bringing the

“We want Cornerstone to start a positive transformation in kids’ lives and then that has a ripple effect of positive transformation in our community,” said Jim Bush, executive director. You can help promote that transformation by attending Cornerstone’s annual banquet presented by Brown Plus.

The banquet will be held on Thursday, March 21, at Mount Calvary Christian School, 629 Holly St., Elizabethtown. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the banquet will begin at 6 p.m.

The evening will feature a catered meal prepared by The Spot Hometown Deli, including ham, macaroni and cheese, soup, salad and desserts. A silent auction will include a

“This is one of those shows that makes you feel good,” said director Dena McKell, describing “The Wizard of Oz.” “Everybody loves this show and how it brings that aspect of family and home together.”

“The Wizard of Oz” will be performed by Encore Home School Productions at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, through Saturday, March 16, and at

2 p.m. on Sunday, March 17.

Although the musical is based on the iconic movie, the directors encouraged the students to make their characters their own.

“We’re not imitating the movie,” said assistant director Jill Panyard. “We wanted to shape the characters a little differently than the movie. We are shaping Dorothy a bit more like a tomboy, like a hardworking farm girl.”

The cast features about 40 students, ranging in age from

Auditions set for “The Little Mermaid Jr.”

Do you want to be part of the world under the sea?

Students in grades three through 12 are invited to audition for “The Little Mermaid Jr.” The show will be presented in June by Manheim Performing

Arts Community Theatre (MPACT). Auditions will be held on Saturday, March 30, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. “Participation is open to students from any school district, as this is a community organization,”

said Charito Faulkner, MPACT director and board president. Performers will sign up for an audition timeslot and should come prepared with a 30- to 60-second song and a 30to 60-second monologue.

Charito and her husband, Karl, formed MPACT after volunteering for an organization called iStage Performing Arts. “Around 2018, the owners had to dissolve the organization for personal reasons, and we approached them to take over the organization,” she recalled. “At the time, our son and daughter participated, and we couldn’t imagine letting it go since we had seen the profound impact it had on our own children and other children in the community.” The couple recruited other volunteers and rebranded to form the nonprofit MPACT.

The organization’s mission is simple: to create

a platform where both performers and community can unite, fostering a shared love and appreciation for the art of theater.

“All levels of performers are welcome to join as MPACT is where you go to learn and grow,” Charito said.

The organization currently rents space in a local church gym to practice, and performances are held at the Junction Center.

When she’s not at MPACT, Charito is an elementary school teacher. She indulges her love of performing, including a background in chorus, cheerleading, color guard and musical performance, as a volunteer with MPACT.

“The passion for performing has always been a part of me,” she said. “When our children expressed interest in theater, my husband and I naturally became volunteers. Karl taught me the intricacies of set build-

ing, and I couldn’t have undertaken this endeavor without his support.”

Along with roles for performers, students are encouraged to participate as a member of the crew for “The Little Mermaid Jr.” “There are chances to get involved backstage for students in grades seven through 12,” Charito stated. “The behind-thescenes efforts play a crucial role in ensuring a smooth production.”

She hopes students will try out for the musical and encourages anyone

EAHS to host Mini-THON

Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS), 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown, will hold its 17th annual MiniTHON on Friday, March 8. The event, organized by the student-run Mini-THON committee, aims to raise funds for Four Diamonds, which supports pediatric cancer research and assists families affected by childhood cancer.

Mini-THON, inspired by Penn State’s THON, is a year-long initiative culminating in a 12-hour overnight dance marathon at EAHS. This year, the fundraising goal is set at $75,000, with all proceeds directly benefiting the Four Diamonds Fund. Leading this year’s efforts is senior Emma Keener, serving as head overall of

the committee. Assisting her are juniors Haley De Stefano and Isla Schoenberger, co-overalls.

The theme for this year’s Mini-THON is “Launch Cancer Out Of This World.”

The event will kick off at 6 p.m. on March 8, with student dancers engaging in various activities, games and competitions throughout the night. The pinnacle

who isn’t already a part of MPACT to consider joining.

“Engaging in the program brings joy, and we welcome individuals of all skill levels,” she said. “There’s always a place for you in MPACT. Many participants have expressed feeling like part of a family.”

EAHS invites families and community members take part in the event from 7 to 10 p.m. Separate admission fees have been set for adults and students. Children age 5 and under will be admitted free of charge.

Rehearsals for “The Wizard of Oz” began in November with character sessions, offering students an opportunity to delve into their characters’ back story to help create in-depth characters on stage.

“Those nuances of the characters are what take good shows and make them great shows,” Panyard said.

Grace Miller, a freshman from Hershey who portrays the Wicked Witch of the West, said audiences can expect to see a polished, elaborate performance.

“They will be blown away by the dance numbers. They are amazing,” she stated. She added that learning to perform the show to recorded music has been

ticket will be required for the show. Additional donations will also be asked for the video game room, face painting, photo booth and science experiences from Elizabethtown College of Science and Motion.

Food offerings will be available from the Philly Cheesesteak food truck and the Spot Hometown Deli, with proceeds contributing to the fundraising goal.

Individuals will be able to purchase a “Light of Hope” lantern to honor those affected by cancer. The lanterns will be featured in the Lights of Hope Luminary Ceremony at 9:30 p.m., symbolizing the collective effort in the fight against cancer.

Mini-THON holds special significance for the Elizabethtown community, Chris Millard was a student at Elizabethtown Area Middle School when he was diagnosed with cancer. While battling the disease, he wrote a story, titled “The Four Diamonds,” about a

challenging, but the cast members are up to the task.

“We have to work with the music, and we have a very limited amount of time to get lines in before the music switches to something else,” she explained. “With a live orchestra, they can slow it down if they need to, but we have to be sure we’re on pace.”

Josiah Evans, a senior from Elizabethtown who plays The Cowardly Lion, said he challenged himself not to be influenced by the movie or the well-known character he’s portraying.

“I had to tell myself that every depiction of this role is going to be unique,” he said. “I wanted to create my own part.”

He encourages audiences to see the show, adding, “It’s centered on friendship and the values of having

good friends and the values of appreciating all you have in your life and being grateful. People should come see the show because it’s going to be very heartwarming.”

Grace emphasized that it takes a team of parents and students to pull together a show full of elaborate props, costumes and sets.

“When you see this show, you’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg. The parents and the kids have spent countless hours on behindthe-scenes work, and you only see the end product,” she said. “To know the full extent of what has gone into creating this show, it’s really amazing to think about that.”

brave knight who had to conquer a challenging quest using courage, wisdom, strength and honesty to help him overcome the evil sorceress. Chris died on Dec. 17, 1972, and his story inspired the Four Diamonds Fund.

Started in 1973, the Four Diamonds has evolved into the largest student-run philanthropy globally. Seventy percent of all THON and Mini-THON fundraising goes toward research designed to find a cure to pediatric cancer. In addition, funds are used to pay bills and assist families in every way possible, including providing funding for music therapy and meal vouchers. One of the first patients to ever benefit from the Four Diamonds Fund 40 years ago was from a family in Elizabethtown. That patient is now a physician.

horrors of the Nazi regime and the war before arriving in the United States alone in 1948 at age 13. She has written several books, and she was a competitive ballroom dancer. Now a motivational speaker, Isaacson will talk about the role of places like Cornerstone in the community.

“For our banquet, she will focus on the importance of youth to have a safe place to go to discover their Godgiven talents, abilities and purpose,” Bush said.

He noted that Isaacson is a dynamic speaker, adding that a board member suggested her for the banquet after attending a previous event where Isaacson spoke. “From what I hear, she is a spitfire,” Bush said with a laugh.

Isaacson will display World War II memorabilia

Museum to host reading event

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will host its family-friendly Reading on the Rails event on Saturday, March 9. Story times will begin at 10:30 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 1:15 p.m., 2 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.

Among the museum’s historic trains, kids will hear stories about locomotives, railroads and more, and receive a sticker after each story. They may create a suitcase design using the stickers, along with crayons, glitter and other trimmings.

Readers will include

Kristin Fernitz, director of the Strasburg-Heisler Library, and Kristy Aurand, chief development officer of the Community Action Partnership, along with Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania representatives Kevin Hale, Volunteer of the Year; Patrick Morrison, director; Juliette OConnor, educator; and Elizabeth Myers, volunteer/ program coordinator.

at the banquet and will have copies of her books for sale.

The banquet is Cornerstone’s biggest fundraiser each year. Last year, proceeds went to transforming a space into a coffeehouse in the building and hiring a coordinator of girls’ programming and communication. Jenn Gibson came on board in that role in September.

“This year, we’d like to update The Mix, which is our large mixed-use room,” Bush said, noting that proceeds will also be used to continue building upgrades.

Cornerstone provides programming for students in grades six through 12, along with a free meal during programs. Rising costs and increased enrollment

have prompted additional fundraising needs.

“Since the school year started, our middle school program has grown over 400%,” he shared.

Bush encourages people to attend the banquet, adding, “They’ll be coming to support positive transformation that begins with the kids in our community. When the kids have a positive influence, our community as a whole is going to be better.”

Reservations are required for the banquet, and there is a fee for tickets. Tickets are available at www.corner stoneetown.org and may be purchased up until the day of the event as space allows.

Cornerstone is still accepting corporate sponsors for the banquet, and interested parties may contact Bush at 717-367-0000.

A season of change at REYS

possible.”

Unger brings with him more than 25 years working in child welfare, including 15 years with Bethany Christian Services.

It’s been a season of transition for Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) in Mount Joy, and the nonprofit organization is ready for something new.

In mid February, Mark Unger became the new executive director of REYS, bringing with him a rich background in service.

“Mark is a natural leader, a go-getter, and most importantly, he’s passionate about Jesus and bringing people to Him,” said Jill Meador, REYS board chair.

Last fall, three of the organization’s five staff members announced plans to leave for other positions, Meador said, and REYS had to pivot. The center paused programming and refocused while preparing for the departure of executive director Cristina Paden, who stayed on through early 2024 to help ease the transition.

REYS has since hired a new office assistant and a community engagement coordinator, along with Unger.

“We truly felt God’s hand throughout the process,” Meador said. “I also want to thank the REYS board and staff for all of their effort to make this next season

“REYS appealed to me because it’s a Christian ministry and because it focused on reaching kids in the Donegal School District,” Unger said, noting that his two grown daughters graduated from Donegal High School. “I also felt aligned with the organization’s mission, vision and values.”

He may have just started in his new role, but Unger hit the ground running.

He’s focused on a new three-year strategic plan for REYS, including a rebranding of the organization’s name, which will be revealed soon.

REYS also created a new mission statement, streamlined to highlight the organization’s goal. “Our new mission statement is reach local youth with the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ,’” Unger said.

Now that REYS is fully staffed again, the organization will resume programming five days a week starting Monday, March 11, serving youths in grades one through 12.

Unger, who lives in Elizabethtown with Stefani,

Baked pasta dinner slated

his wife of 41 years, enjoys spending time with his five grandchildren, getting outdoors and playing the harmonica. He’s excited about the opportunities he sees at REYS.

“REYS is a safe place for kids to come after school, to have fun, play games, learn about God and connect with staff and volunteers who really care about kids,” Unger said, noting that students receive a meal during their time at REYS and that all programs and services are provided free of charge.

“It’s wonderful to have a community center like REYS right here in Mount Joy.”

Meador is excited to have Unger on board and to offer more opportunities to serve the wider community.

REYS will host a community worship night on Tuesday, March 19, from 7 to 8 p.m.

“I felt like the Lord put it on my heart to host a worship night at REYS,” she said. “I would love to see the churches of Mount Joy be unified and come together. This is an opportunity for pastors and staff to come and not be in charge - just come and worship. The community can come for a night of worship and praying in small groups.”

Registration is not required for the worship night, Meador said, and plenty of parking is available behind the building at 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy. For more information on REYS, visit https://reys. org.

St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 27 E. Main St., Mount Joy, will serve a baked pasta dinner on Sunday, March 17. Meals will be available via curbside pickup at the rear of the church from 4 to 5 p.m. In

addition to pasta, the meal will feature a salad, bread and butter, and dessert.

Although there is no cost for the meal, reservations are required by noon on Monday, March 11, by calling the church office at 717-653-5493, ext. 270. Callers should give their name, including the spelling of their last name, along with their phone number and the number of meals they are requesting.
