“Shrek The Musical” celebrates our differences
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“This show is about acceptance,” said Landon Hunsicker, describing “Shrek The Musical.” “Shrek is an ogre, and everyone assumes he’s mean, but the show gives him the opportunity to show what’s inside him and help him connect with the other characters.”
“Shrek The Musical” will be perf ormed by Encore! Home School
Productions at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 2. It will be performed at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim.
“The cast has worked really hard on this show,” noted Landon, who portrays Donkey. “We started rehearsing in November. It’s a really fun show, and it’s different than the movie version of ‘Shrek.’ It adds to that original story.”

They’re off to see the wizard
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Whenthe classic musical “The Wizard of Oz” comes to the stage at Mount Calvary Christian School, audiences will see a specific theme play out throughout the show as Kansas farm girl Dorothy gets swept away in a tornado to the magical land of Oz. “This show is about home,” said Jessica Shaffer, a senior who plays Dorothy. “It’s about realizing you might not understand at first that home isn’t necessarily a place, but it’s the people you know.”
Mount Calvary will present “The Wizard of Oz” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 23, through Saturday, March 25, with an additional 2 p.m. performance on Saturday. The show will be performed in the gym at the school, 629 N. Holly St., Elizabethtown.
Directed by Kelli Robinson, the musical will feature 37 students in grades six through 12. “The Wizard
of Oz” is similar to the movie of the same name, said Daniel Hess, a seventh-grader who portrays the Cowardly Lion. “There are a few extra scenes in the musical, but it’s about Dorothy’s journey through Oz and the friends she finds along the way to help her,” he stated. “She learns that she doesn’t have to look very hard to find an adventure.”
The students have been working on the show since December, and their hard work is paying off, said Reagan Mertz, a senior who portrays the Scarecrow. “It’s going to be a very exciting show to watch,” he stated.
“I’m excited to see it all come together. We have a great cast.” He noted that for his character in particular, the performance requires a bit of physicality. “I’ve been practicing falling a lot,” he said with a laugh. “It’s been fun to sort of flop around in character. It’s controlled chaos.”
Each of the actors has put time and effort into honing his or her character,
said Jessica. “To see this cast put their heart and soul into this show has been really great,” she noted. For some of the students, the roles have been especially challenging: Seventh-grader Karly Bozell, for example, portrays Dorothy’s dog, Toto, using a puppet. “It’s been a strange but fun experience to learn how to use the puppet,” she shared, noting that she has some lines as Toto. “I get to bark a little bit.”
As Dorothy travels through Oz in the musical, she encounters a variety of situations that lead to an entertaining show, said Malachi Shenk, a sophomore who plays the Tin Man. “Audiences can expect fun times and a lot of laughs,” he remarked. “There are comedic parts, but there are tears, too. It’s an emotional roller coaster of a show.”
Tickets for “The Wizard of Oz” may be purchased at https://mcchristianschool.home townticketing.com/embed/all. Tickets will also be for sale at the door.
Race and field day will support Conewago Creek
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“ We’re all connected to the watershed,” said Monique Dykman, Londonderry Township MS4 environmental specialist. “We want to provide opportunities for people to also connect with their neighbors, connect with the outdoors, and support our fish, mammal, and bird populations.”
That’s the inspiration behind two events Dykman is organizing in April. The Conewago Darter 5K Run/Walk and 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk will be held on Sunday, April 2, with a Field Day
for Clean Water running concurrently. Prizes will be awarded to the overall male and female top finishers in the 5K as well as the top three male and female finishers in various age categories. The Fun Run/Walk will not be timed and does not include awards. Participants should park and register for either race at 2771 N. Market St., Elizabethtown, where a bus will transport 5K participants to the start line at Old Trolley Line Park, 475 Beverly Road, Elizabethtown. Fun Run/Walk participants willfollow the signs to the Conewago Recreation Trail, 2385 N. Market St., See Creek pg 6

Scholarship offered to future EMTs and paramedics
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Michael P. McMahon was a true Renaissance man. A 1993 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School, he was a registered nurse, a flight attendant and a school bus driver. Each job offered Michael a chance to help people, something he truly believed in. Although he gave his all to everything he did, he was most passionate about his work as an emergency medical technician (EMT). When Michael passed away from colon cancer in October 2021, his family turned its grief into an opportunity to help others. The Michael P. McMahon Scholarship for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was created to help any resident of Lancaster County who wishes to pursue an EMT, Advanced EMT or Paramedic Certification.
Michael was the oldest of four children and the son of Mike and Joanne McMahon.
“He was loving, and he was loved by his family and friends,” Mike stated. Added Joanne, “Michael’s life was so varied. You couldn’t put him in a box. If he was interested in something, he’d do it. … They say it’s the dash between the years on your gravestone that matters. Michael made the most of that dash.”
Orienteering Class slated
Governor Dick Environmental Center, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will host an Orienteering Class on Sunday, March 26, at 10 a.m. Participants will learn about orienteering and how to become active in it. The class is free, but there
is a fee for a special map. The program is open to the public, but preregistration is required by contacting 717964-3808 or governordick @hotmail.com and providing a name and phone number in case the program is canceled.
We can help your family honor and remember your loved ones with the highest quality service in our private crematory. CENTRAL

Joanne noted that her free-spirited son loved to try new things, but one career path made all the difference. “Being an EMT and eventually a paramedic changed his life,” she shared. “He grew as a person. It made him who
he was.”
When Joanne sat down to write Michael’s obituary, and she got to the part about giving flowers, she had another idea. “She said, ‘Let’s start a scholarship in his name,’” recalled Mike, noting that
HELP WANTED
they asked family members and friends to contribute.
“Our goal is to find as many people to help as we can,” said Joe McMahon, Michael’s brother. “We want to pay for as many as we can and give people the opportunity to do this as a career, to help people to do something every day that they can be proud of.”
Noted Mike, “This is a full scholarship, based on capability and need.” It will cover tuition up to $7,500.
To help develop the scholarship, the McMahon family reached out to the Lancaster County EMS Council, a nonprofit organization made up of representatives from all of the EMS agencies serving Lancaster County. The initial scholarship was open to students and alumni at Lancaster Catholic High School, but a second round is being offered countywide.
The scholarship is open to both current students and
adults. “Michael was kind of a late bloomer, so the ideal candidate could be someone who has stayed home with their kids and now wants to get back into the workforce,” said Michael’s sister Mary Kate Walsh. “Or it could be someone who wants to change careers and needs financial support to do that.”
The scholarship is meant to be a stepping stone into a career that helps people, said Michael’s sister Colleen Murphy, who added, “We need more helpers in the world like my brother.”
The application process for the scholarship will run from Saturday, April 1, through Friday, June 30. Scholarship winners will be notified by Monday, July 31. For more information, to obtain a scholarship application or to make a donation to the scholarship fund, contact Joe McMahon at joe@joemcmahonlaw.com.

Second Grace seeks volunteers
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Understanding the need for young single mothers to have mentors, Candace Abel created Second Grace. The
program matches “Graces”the mothers - with “Sages”trained advocates for the mothers. During the initial training period for the Sages, Abel was impressed by the background and passion of one of the volunteers, Deb Louie. She soon asked Louie to join the organization as program coordinator for Second Grace.
“I really identified with Candy’s vision,” said Louie, whose background includes 10 years working with Dauphin County Children and Youth and 13 years in mental health counseling. With Louie on board, Second Grace is looking for more mentors. The organization
will hold information sessions from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12; from 9 to 11 a.m. or 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 15; and from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 22. The sessions will be held at Second Grace, 1610 Landis Road, Mount Joy.
Currently, Second Grace has a core group of six Sages. The goal is to match each of the young mothers one-onone with a Sage, who will make a two-year commitment to work with the mother. “It takes about six to 10 hours a month to serve as a Sage,” Louie stated. “The Sages can talk to the Graces on the phone, meet in person to do things, go to

Elizabethtown, which is also the ending point of the 5K. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., with the last bus leaving the registration site at 9:30 a.m. The 5K will start at 10 a.m. and the Fun Run/Walk will kick off at 10:45 a.m. Participants may register for either race at www.pretzelcitysports.com. Online registration will close at midnight on Wednesday, March 29, but participants may register on the day of the race in person.
Along with the races, Dykman is organizing a Field Day for Clean Water from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Conewago Recreation Trail. Local conservation partners will present information about water quality issues, water pollutants, and more. “There will be tables that have macroinvertebrates, which are stream critters, and people will have the chance to learn about them, how to ID them, and why they are important,” Dykman noted. Tours of the ongoing stream restoration in the area will also be offered, and participants will have the opportunity to help plant 50 trees in the park. Food will be provided by The
Chubby Unicorn food truck. “People can learn about why stream restoration is needed … the habitat of the area and the animals that live there, and the future of the stream,” Dykman said. She explained that the day is a fundraiser for the Conewago Creek, which is an impaired waterway. A multiphase floodplain restoration project is underway at the
Conewago Creek, with goals of reducing local flooding and improving local water quality. The project will also restore on-site wetlands, create a more resilient creek, and expand and enhance wildlife habitat.
The events on April 2 also offer a way for Dykman and other environmental experts to promote the ongoing work and answer questions.
“The restoration project is a high-profile project on the recreation trail,” she stated. “A lot of people use the trail, and if they’re curious about what’s going on there, I would love the opportunity to educate them and provide information.”
For more information on the races or the field day, email Dykman at mdykman @londonderrypa.org.

Shrek frompg
“Shrek The Musical” tells the story of the title character, Shrek, portrayed by Seth Snyder, who becomes an unlikely hero as he takes a journey to rescue the feisty Princess Fiona, played by Emily Norcott as an adult, Grace Richey as a teen and Cambria Brinton as a young child. Full of fairy-tale characters, the show is a familyfriendly story of friendship, love, community and uniqueness. As Pinocchio, played by Giselle Bartlett, says in the show, “What makes us special makes us strong.”
The production will feature a cast of 40 students from across the central Pennsylvania region. Students live in the school districts of Hempfield, Elizabethtown Area, Penn Manor, Donegal, Lancaster, Susquenita, Bermudian Springs, Camp Hill, AnnvilleCleona, Central Dauphin, Lower Dauphin, Cumberland Valley, West Shore, Derry Township, East Pennsboro, Susquehanna Township and Middletown Area.
“Community is a big theme of this show,” said Callaghan Petrosky, who plays Lord Farquaad. “It’s about being comfortable with who you are and having a place in a bigger community.”
The large cast of actors don elaborate costumes, including fur suits and prosthetics, and for some of the actors, it’s been a unique challenge. “I
wear a fur suit and I have hooves on my hands, so I’ve been practicing with them,” Landon stated. For Callaghan, his character is extremely short, requiring him to act on his knees. “I wear a long cape and have knee pads, and then I have fake legs attached to the pads,” he said. Gingy, played by Ella McKell, works with a puppet throughout the show, and Dragon, portrayed by Lily Patota, wears a large headpiece and maneuvers the stage with a giant tail.
Costumes, props, sets, playbills, advertising, concessions and more are coordinated by families, who contribute their time and talents to the production, said Tammy Bartlett, public relations lead. “It takes a community to produce a show,” she stated.
Encore! Home School Productions is a nonprofit organization that offers performing arts opportunities to homeschool and cyber school students in central Pennsylvania. A Christian organization, it focuses on providing students with a positive, challenging and educational experience, presenting high-quality live theater to the public. “Shrek The Musical” is directed by Dena McKell, with Coleen Steindel as the music director. The show is produced by Ann Snyder.
To purchase tickets for “Shrek The Musical,” visit www.encorehsp.org or call 717-459-3701. Online sales will close three hours before show time. Tickets will be available at the door.

Elizabethtown Grange presents jackets to FFA members
Elizabethtown Area Grange
2076 presented jackets to first-year members of the Elizabethtown FFA chapter on Jan. 31. The presentation was made by Elizabethtown
Grange Master Matt Espenshade, who was assisted by chapter vice president Evan Espenshade at the Elizabethtown Area High School in the presence of agriculture students and faculty members.
Due to the time frame when the students had their required agriculture class, they were not eligible to apply for
the state foundation scholarship. FFA chapter adviser Mark Anderson contacted Elizabethtown Grange to ask if the Grange would consider sponsoring any of the students. Each student was required to submit an essay answering several questions, including what he or she hoped to achieve during his or her time in the FFA program. After submissions were evaluated by several Grange members, the Grange’s members decided to purchase jackets for all of the applicants.
The students receiving jackets were Alex Brandt, Josiah Bernhart, Trent Kautz, Abby Lerch, Cami Lewis, Rachel Smucker and Adilynn Ginder. This is the second year the Elizabethtown Grange has purchased jackets for the local FFA chapter.
Elizabethtown Area Grange 2076 is a family-oriented fraternal organization that advocates for issues important to agriculture and rural communities. For more information, contact Espenshade at 717361-2844.
Wellness Call program launched
Jeff McMenamin, community and customer support manager at United Disabilities Services (UDS), launched a Wellness Call program, using grants and donations to help provide wellness calls to individuals free of charge for a limited time. Realizing how much the COVID-19 pandemic brought isolation upon the
population, especially the aging community and those with disabilities, the idea for the Wellness Call program was born.
With the rapid onset of technology that makes it easier to stay home, the risk of isolation is growing. The calls provide security to individuals who may be isolated and
offers peace of mind that someone cares and is actively checking on them.
Check-in calls make sure individuals are comfortable and completing daily living activities such as taking their medications and eating properly and also assesses the mood for safety in the home. Conversational calls offer a more in-depth conversation about family, hobbies, and current events and provide a sense of connection.

Etter, Gibson named to Woman of Impact class
Rachel Etter and Priscilla Gibson will seek to advance heart health and raise lifesaving funds with the American Heart Association as members of the organization’s Lancaster/Lebanon 2023 Woman of Impact class. Etter is the director of cardiology services for WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital. Gibson is a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Realty.
The Woman of Impact class members are nominated by their peers because of their passion and drive to make a difference in the community and raise awareness of women’s cardiovascular health. The Woman of Impact program is an extension of the American Heart Association’s longstanding Go Red for Women movement, a comprehensive platform
designed to increase women’s heart health awareness and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women globally.
Beginning on National Wear Red Day, Feb. 3, hundreds of Woman of Impact nominees nationwide embarked on a journey to help transform the health of women. Each week,
nominees and their Impact Teams, made up of friends or family members, will participate in activities designed to create a culture of wellness and health equity. Activities may include educational events, learning and spreading the word about CPR, getting active and recruiting women to participate in research. Nominees
and their Impact Teams also raise funds for the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement.
On Thursday, April 6, the woman whose team has the greatest number of impact points - awarded through a combination of fundraising and mission impact activities - will be named Lancaster/Lebanon 2023 Woman of Impact Award winner. The winner will be recognized at the Lancaster/Lebanon Go Red for Women Luncheon on Wednesday, May 24, at the Mount Hope Estate in Manheim.

Louie emphasized that anyone with a heart for service would make a good Sage, noting, “We’re not looking for someone to be perfect. We’re looking for someone to be present.”

Sharing the burden
BY ANN MEAD ASH
There is an old saying that “many hands make light work.”
Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC), in partnership with We Rise International and with the help of a grant from LMC Legacy Foundation, would like to lighten the burden of area faith leaders with regard to the mental health of their communities.
Leaders of all faiths in Lancaster, York, Lebanon, and
Adams counties are invited to “Guiding Faith Leaders on Mental Health,” a breakfast scheduled to be held on Wednesday, March 29, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Eden Resort, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster. Seating is limited and registration must be made by Wednesday, March 22. There is a nominal fee to attend.
Kim McDevitt, director of MHALC, said that the breakfast was inspired in part when she

Knowing that experts and resources are available, McDevitt said that MHALC hopes to provide training and support. “We don’t want them to have to carry the burden on their own,” she said.
Speakers at the breakfast will
include Dr. Jeffrey D. Hamilton, who will discuss “ministering to persons facing mental illness,” and Janelle Bitikofer, executive director of We Rise International, which has a Lancaster location. Bitikofer said that We Rise International has conducted indepth training for faith leaders to teach strategies to reduce stigma and connect them to support. “(Faith leaders) are really instrumental in responding to the needs of their communities,” she said. “They are the people individuals in the
faith community go to when they need help and support.” Noting that faith leaders are on the frontlines, she added, “We come alongside them and help them to be able to meet those needs with additional support, information, and linking to community resources.”

munity member in a struggle. “The champions will be invited to a second event on May 25, which will also be held at the Eden,” explained Margie Lamberson, director of development and communications for MHALC. “It will be a follow-up educational session for the people who can assist the (faith leaders) as needs arise to lessen the burden.”
“ We will provide training to the champions so they can walk alongside (the faith leaders), who are often tasked with doing that alone without a support system,” said Bitikofer.
McDevitt explained that the champions will then become contact persons between faith communities and MHALC.
According to Lamberson, MHALC can then help the champions navigate the complex mental health system, which they are able to provide without charge thanks to the community, foundations, and others who support the work.
