Children’s book teaches about talking to God

“W hen we include God in our day, God shows us amazing things,” said author Krista Snyder. Krista, who lives in Elizabethtown, has published a book with this message. “Basil’s Blessings: My Special Day With God” is geared toward children ages 4 to 7. It tells the story of Basil, a little inchworm, and the adventures he encounters with a bluebird named BB.

Although the book was published in December 2021, the story was much longer in the making, Krista said. “This was a 20-year project for me,” she remarked. “When God wants something to happen, He makes it happen in His time.”

Celebrating the Earth

Earth 2 E-Town has a mission to make the world a better place for all creatures big and small and to engage, educate and energize the community in meeting that goal. The organization will hold the third annual Earth 2 E-Town Earth Day Festival on

Saturday, April 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St. “ We have really grown over the past three years,” said Kelsey Grove, founder and co-director of the event. “We have nearly 60 different businesses and info tables. We’ll have a maker’s market this year, with over 25 local artisans

that are working in natural and recycled materials.”

The event will feature a variety of hands-on activities for people of all ages, including opportunities to count bees in a live hive, to pet chinchillas and to take a close look under the hood of an electric vehicle. Free face painting will be offered by Wildflower Artistry, and

Lancaster Science Factory will be on-site with a variety of activities for children.

Live music and presentations will be featured throughout the day, including a performance by Ukulele Uprising and a program from Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary. Food and drinks will be available as well.

Krista’s original story wasn’t religious, although it was full of positive messages. Over the years, she kept coming back to the draft, tweaking and changing it. Teaching 4-year-olds at her church, St. Peter Catholic Church in Elizabethtown, helped Krista change the scope of her story. “God helped me to develop this story,” she stated. “Everything in my story, God helped me to write.”

During the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, Krista reached out to Caracyn Publishing, a Grantville-based publisher, about her story. The finished product, illustrated by Nancy Landis, is a

Kids Fishing Derby will promote outdoor fun

“It’s so important to give kids a taste of the outdoors,” said Scot Harlacher, a member of the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA). That’s the goal of the organization’s annual Kids Fishing Derby.

The event will be held on Saturday, April 15, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the reflecting pond on the grounds of Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy. The derby is open to all youths age 11 and under as well as all handicapped anglers who possess a current Pennsylvania fishing license.

“This is a really fun event,” Harlacher noted. “We have kids who this is like Christmas morning for them. It’s that same level of excitement.”

He also noted that the event is a multigenerational experience. “We have parents who went to this as kids and now they’re bringing their own kids,” he stated, noting that the event has been held at the church since the late 1990s.

The DFCA will stock the

pond with more than 300 brook, rainbow, golden and brown trout. Participants will have the opportunity to catch up to five fish per person to take home. All fishermen must bring their own equipment and clean their own fish. DFCA members will be on hand until 11:30 a.m. to help fishermen, but all fishing will stop at 11 a.m.

The church will host a pancake breakfast during the event, and the meal will be open to the general public. It will be served from 7 to 11 a.m. in the church fellowship hall and will feature a menu of pancakes, sausage and juice, with coffee available for a separate charge. Proceeds from the breakfast will benefit the church’s annual mission trip to upstate New York. “This is one of our main fundraisers for that trip,” said Harlacher, who is a member of the church. “We’ve been going on this trip for more than 20 years to perform home rehabilitation projects.”

He noted that the fishing derby will be held rain or

Society hosts Nurse Honor Guard, posts next program

The Elizabeth Hughes Society will meet on Monday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. The program will be “The Bluebirds of Lancaster County.” The presenters, who will include Bill Puffenberger and Chuck Musser, will provide information about the rebounding bluebird species by sharing a video, birdhouses, nests, eggs and handouts. They will offer tips for attracting bluebirds to one’s yard and tell attendees where they can follow bluebird trails.

The Lancaster Nurse Honor Guard presented a Nightingale Tribute at the Elizabeth Hughes Society’s meeting on March 27 at St. Paul’s UMC. The Nurse Honor Guard is a nonprofit organization of volunteer

nurses who perform a memorial ceremony at the funeral home, church or grave site when a nurse passes away. Dressed in the traditional uniform, including a navy cape, and carrying a lantern, members pay tribute with a synopsis of the

nurse’s career. The Lancaster Nurse Honor Guard Association offers an array of services, such as a full Nurse Honor Guard service or a table of remembrance. For additional information, visit www.lancastercountynurse honorguard.org.

CREMATION
The Elizabeth Hughes Society welcomed the Lancaster Nurse Honor Guard to its March meeting. Lancaster Nurse Honor Guard members include Aime Ream, Alice Pero, Karen Morgan, Donna Thourot and Kelly Arnold.

When a high school sports team has a slow start to their season, things can go one of two ways. Teams can shake off that slow start, right the ship and finish strong or succumb to the pressure, sputtering through the remaining games until the season is over.

The Elizabethtown boy’s lacrosse team is hoping for the former after losses to Garden Spot and Lancaster Country Day kept the Bears winless on the season. Against Spot on March 29th, E-town was unable to keep pace with the Spartans, falling by a 12-6 final. Elijah Poulos (4g) and Carson NyeSmith (2g) accounted for the offense while Josiah Erb finished with nine saves.

A few days later Elizabethtown was able to find their offense but only after falling behind 10-1 over the first half of the LCD game. The Bears enjoyed an 8-4 second half edge but that was not enough to overcome their first half deficit, leading to a 14-9 final. Erb finished with another nine saves while Poulos (3g-1a) and NyeSmith (2g) once again paced the attack. Bryce Kauffman, Holden Haver, Dylan Ginder and

Cayden Enck cleaned up the scoring with one goal each.

BASEBALL

The sports world is littered with various pitfalls that can trip you up at any moment. The baseball team, with back-toback losses to Lower Dauphin and Solanco coming after a scorching 3-0 start, can attest.

Lower Dauphin handed the Bears their first defeat on March 31st, using an eight-run fifth inning to outlast E-town 10-8. Elizabethtown scored all eight runs over a three inning stretch, buoyed by Luis Perez and Elijah Macfarlane and their combined four RBI.

Kaden Kimble absorbed the loss, striking out five while pitching into the fifth before giving way to Pike Burkett. Evan Hassinger took over for Burkett with the pair covering the final two and two-third innings.

E-town followed with a 5-0 loss to Solanco on April 3rd with Golden Mule hurler Brayden Herr holding the Bears hitless over seven innings. Burkett was the starter this time around, taking the loss after pitching into the sixth inning. Hassinger closed things out for the second straight game with the pair combining for six strikeouts and seven walks.

Elizabethtown returned to their winning ways on the 5th, rolling Lebanon 11-0 in five innings. Kaden Kimble enjoyed the run support, allowing just one hit on his way to the win. The junior also collected one hit and one RBI at the plate. Kimble’s support came mostly from the bat of Isiah Shayter who had two hits and four RBI. Josh Rudy added two hits with his

two RBI slotting in between Shayter and Kimble.

VOLLEYBALL

The Bear volleyball team pulled their overall record even at 3-3 with wins over Lancaster Mennonite and Ephrata following a loss to Manheim Central. E-town was able to get by the Blazers, 3-1, having to battle for each of their victories.

The Bears opened with a 25-23 win only to have Lancaster Mennonite answer with a 2725 game two win. The hard work was far from over but wins of 25-22 and 25-18 sealed the match. Seth Rajnic collected nine kills, seven blocks and two aces with Josh McCoy adding 10 kills and five digs. Eli Miller topped the team with 24 assists.

Elizabethtown needed the full five games to get by Ephrata on April 4th, using wins of 26-18, 25-16 and 15-6 to counter the Mountaineers’ wins of 25-22 and 25-20. McCoy (15 kills) and Miller (29 assists) led the way with Prabin Bhattarai adding eight digs. Rajnic (four aces) and Cooper Torborg (four blocks) also made their way to the stat sheet.

SOFTBALL

Back and forth is one way to describe the softball team’s opening stretch. The Lady Bears sit 2-3 after topping Lower Dauphin but falling to Solanco.

E-town was able to snap a two-game slide with their 9-8 win over Lower Dauphin on March 31st. Elizabethtown took an early 2-1 lead against LD but needed a seven-run sixth inning to outlast the Lady Falcons. Breonna Edgell picked up the win with one strikeout

and two walks. Keira Davis fronted the offense, driving in three runs on three hits. Carli Zerphey and Kaelin Griffin addedtwoRBIapiece.

The Lady Bears returned to the L-L on April 3rd, falling to Solanco by an 11-5 final. Edgell covered all seven innings to take the loss, despite nine strikeouts. Chloe Wilkinson enjoyed a three RBI day with Sophia Finch pushing a run acrossaswell.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Unbeaten no more. With a 12-7 less to Lower Dauphin on March 31st the Lady Bear

lacrosse team suffered their first loss of 2023. Dani Bruno netted four scores, but it was not enough. Piper Patrick, Callie Love-Morris, and Joy NgaFua added one goal each. Sydney Pope finished with six saves.

Elizabethtown wrapped that loss with a win over Garden Spot a few days prior and a win over Lancaster County Day a few days later. The Lady Bears topped the Lady Spartans 10-9 on March 29th, using six Bruno goals and seven Pope saves to leave New Holland with the one

goal win. Charley LengelKramer added two scores with Isabelle Bailey and Aiesha Rios scoring once each.

The win over LCD came on April 3rd by a 16-7 final with Pope posting another seven saves game. Bailey, Bruno, and Josie Spayd topped the scoring chart with three goals apiece. Rios and NgaFua added two goals each while Patrick, Alexis Cook and Tori Gonzales each scored once.

TENNIS

Back-to-back wins over Ephrata and Penn Manor, both by 4-3 finals have the Bear tennis team even at 33. Elizabethtown topped the Mountaineers on April 3rd using singles wins by Emery Morgan, Ethan Duralja and Bennett Kreider coupled with a doubles win by Morgan and Luke Risser to get the job done.

Against Penn Manor on the 5th, it was doubles play that carried the Bears with only Finn Grinnell picking up a singles victory. Grinnell was part of the doubles parade, teaming with Duralja to take number two doubles. Risser and Morgan along with the duo of Kreider and Levi Sites

completed the doubles domination.

TRACK

The track team’s trip to Manheim on April 3rd produced mixed results with the boys posting a 94-55 win while the girls fell by a 107-43 final. The boys enjoyed winning all three relays for a quick 15 team points. Bradley Kreider was the lone Bear to pull double duty with wins in the 1600m and 3200m. Jackson Kay and his 800m win along with Juan Lopez and his 400m win gave E-town the mid-distance events as well. The remainder of Elizabethtown’s success came in the field where wins by Brendan Rilatt (shot put), Caleb Kreider (long jump), Tavan Schoenberger (triple jump) and Caleb Fuge (pole vault) completed the victory.

On the girls’ side Ali Fink accounted for two of the Lady Bears solo wins, taking the 800m and 1600m events. Jordan DiRisio claimed the final solo event on the track with a win in the 3200m while Anna Rank posted the lone field win by taking the pole vault. E-town did nab one of the three relay events with the 4x100 team clocking a 52.8.

book that features multiple themes. “One of the themes is from 1 Thessalonians 5:17, ‘pray without ceasing,’” said Krista, who works as a purchasing agent for G.E. Richards Graphic Supplies in Landisville. “My job is stressful, and I pray my way through my day. My book shows kids how easy it is in every moment of the day to talk to God. My inchworm talks to God and includes God in his day.”

Another theme in the book comes from Isaiah 6:3, “The whole earth is full of His glory,” and the book also stresses the importance of loving your enemies and talking to others about God. The story also teaches a lesson about the power of God. “Who would think a bluebird and an inchworm would become friends?” Krista said. “But with God, anything is possible.”

Krista included three songs she wrote the lyrics for in the book as well as activity pages and facts about inchworms and dandelions. On her website, www.kristasnyderbooks.com, readers may download several lesson plans she wrote that are connected to the book as well.

W hen she’s not writing, Krista enjoys spending time with her husband, Mike, and their dog, Buffy. A portion of the proceeds of each book sold will benefit Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtownbased organization that supports adoption of children with special needs.

Krista said she has ideas for more books, and she’d love to turn Basil’s story into a series. She hopes that anyone who picks up “Basil’s Blessings” will read it and come away with a renewed relationship with

God. “I truly believe if a child learns to talk to God when he or she is young, they will turn into an amazing individual when they grow up,” she said.

“Basil’s Blessings: My Special Day With God” is available for purchase at Trellis Marketplace, 153 E. High St., Elizabethtown; Vintage & Co., 3545 Marietta Ave., Lancaster; Weinhold Chiropractic, 535 Farmview Lane, Mount Joy; and www.krista snyderbooks.com. Krista will sell and sign copies of her book at an Art, Craft and Yard Sale at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409 Cherry St., Columbia, on Saturday, June 3.

Educational opportunities will be offered by Lancaster Conservancy, Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, Pitties.Love.Peace and Science in Motion from Elizabethtown College, among other organizations. The Common Wheel will host a bicycle safety course from noon to 2 p.m.

A large part of the festival will focus on the idea of “reuse,” Grove said, noting that several organizations will be holding donation drives. Habitat for Humanity Lancaster ReStore will accept gently used small furniture, good-condition hardware and tools and home décor items. Leveling the Playing Field will collect used sports equipment to distribute to youths in need, and The Tatted Toy Guys will host a toy swap. The Mount Joy Pet Food Pantry will accept cat food and litter as well as dog food, and the Lancaster County Pharmacists Association with local police will collect unneeded medication as part of a drug take-back project.

A Green Business Expo will feature environmentally conscious businesses such as solar companies and organic lawn care. For businesses that do not have an environmental focus, participation in the expo will still be offered in exchange for accepting an uncommon recyclable item for the event’s recycling drive. For instance, Kairos Massage & Skincare will be accepting Dermalogica products to recycle.

“There is something for everyone at this event,” Grove stated. “It’s for all ages, and it’s put on by the community for the community. There are so many people who have volunteered their time and their talents to make this event possible. … We have to give thanks to the Elizabethtown Rotary Club and the Elizabethtown Chamber of Commerce, who have been diligently planning alongside us all year for the festival.” The event sponsors are DDMP Investment Advisors and Mars Wrigley.

“This is truly a community collaboration,” Grove remarked. “We have so many partnering organizations and groups and volunteers that are making this possible and providing something for people to learn, something for people to do and fun for everybody.”

OSJL celebrates Elizabethtown store’s grand opening

Ocean State Job Lot (OSJL), a discount retail chain with stores across the Northeast, recently announced the opening of its 151st store in Elizabethtown in the former Kmart space in Market Street Square, located at 1605 S. Market St. The Elizabethtown store is OSJL’s eighth location in Pennsylvania and the second in Lancaster County. OSJL opened another new store in March in Shillington in a former Kmart space at 4000 Shillington Plaza.

OSJL’s Elizabethtown store occupies roughly 55,000 square feet of the nearly 95,000-square-foot space, which has been vacant since 2019, offering customers a new shopping experience, restoring vibrancy to the previously vacant retail location and creating new jobs in the community.

OSJL hosted a grand opening celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 11 at its new Elizabethtown store, with representatives from the brand, local dignitaries and officials and other VIPs in attendance, including Denise Grove, executive director, Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce; Marc Hershey, council president; Phil Clark, council vice president; council members Lanty Moss and Jay Hynicker; state Rep. Tom Jones; Dave

Middleton, Elizabethtown store team leader; Elizabethtown Mayor Chuck Mummert; Paul Cox, OSJL director of store operations; and Vincent Ricci, OSJL store team leader.

Visitors enjoyed food trucks, free activities and giveaways.

Shoppers throughout New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania may know OSJL for its Crazy Deals, Insider Club, and wide range of merchandise, including household goods; apparel; pet supplies; seasonal products such as lawn and garden essentials; patio, pool and beach supplies; heating and cooling appliances;

Ocean State Job Lot associates and local dignitaries took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

kitchen pantry staples; and gourmet and international specialty foods.

Store hours are currently 9 a.m.

to 7 p.m. daily. For more information, call 717-423-4973 or visit www.oceanstatejoblot.com.

All participants must register with the DFCA on the day of the derby. Parking will be permitted only in the Donegal Presbyterian Church parking area, with no street parking.

The DFCA is a local nonprofit

Depoe started the organization in 1965, said Brandon Crouser, president of the organization. State Sen. Ryan Aument will be present at the dedication ceremony, which will take place at 11 a.m. For more information about the DFCA or to help with the derby, contact Crouser at 717538-4370.
