Expressing creativity through the arts Supporting early literacy
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
WhenJill Thomasson decided to start her own performing arts company, she took inspiration from Zechariah 4:10: Don’t despise small beginnings. ExHaLTT Performing Arts Academy began in January of 2021 with eight students, but the program has been growing steadily ever since.
The organization, based in Elizabethtown, will host a silent auction on Saturday, April 29, from 6 to 9 p.m. at 222 S. Market St. Proceeds will help Thomasson raise funds as she prepares to expand her
class offerings and renovate her new home space in the ballroom on the second floor of The Marriage Hub, 18 N. Market St., Elizabethtown. The auction will include baskets, gift cards to local restaurants and weeklong vacation home stays.
For almost 15 years, Thomasson was a dance teacher at the Milton Hershey School. She left that job to pursue ExHaLTT, which stands for Expressing Hearts and Lives To Touch. “I truly believe lives can be changed by the arts,” she stated. “My mission is coming from a deep place in me to reach into people’s lives, whether they are a viewer of the arts or a participant, and
change their lives with the arts.”
Her performing arts academy is a faith-based nonprofit organization that has been offering classes from several locations in Elizabethtown as Thomasson gets ready to open her permanent studio this fall. ExHaLTT operates under the tagline, “Where the arts thrive, the soul comes alive.” Thomasson offers classes in all styles of dance for 4-year-olds through adults.
“I believe that the arts lead to the development of confidence,” Thomasson shared. “I want my studio to be a place where kids can grow and engage in a safe space. I want it to be a place for everyone to find a way to create something beautiful and impactful. We all need some way to navigate through the challenges of life, and we all need a place of release. The arts help us intellectually, physically and emotionally.”
ExHaLTT students will present a spring performance on Saturday, May 27, at 7 p.m. in Leffler Chapel and Performance Center at Elizabethtown College. Thomasson encourages people to come to the performance to see what the studio is all about.
She will also offer a musical theater camp this summer for children in fourth grade through rising seniors. The campers will present “The Little Mermaid Jr.” Auditions will be held on Tuesday, July 11, and the camp will run on weekdays from Monday, July 24, through Thursday, Aug. 3. A performance will be held on Aug. 3 at 6 p.m. at Elizabethtown Area High School, where the camp will take place.
As she looks to the future, Thomasson sees only bright things ahead. “I want to offer music, dance, theater and art to serve Elizabethtown and the surrounding communities,” she said. “My vision for the studio is for it to have a feeling of an arts mecca, with something for everyone.”

The Elizabeth Hughes Society has a long history of promoting early literacy in Elizabethtown, and that tradition continued this month when the group presented a check for $100 to Bear Creek Elementary
School librarian Erin Hibshman. The society formed in 1928, but its roots date back to the early 1920s. Although their goals included education and civic awareness, the group members’ main focus was creating the present Elizabethtown Public Library. According to history

as they are making decisions moving into high school,” shared Stephanie R. Larkin, vice president of education, safety and workforce development for ABC Keystone. Larkin explained that students created a variety of take-home projects during the event, including a sheet metal toolbox and a wooden bench. Additionally, they wired lightbulbs and created a circuit, laid brick, were introduced to basic safety and CPR and learned about refrigeration.
Now is the time for students to consider careers in construction, Larkin said, noting that the demand for trade skills grows annually.
Average wages for some trades are $70,000 per year, and apprentices participate in
earn-while-you-learn programs, allowing them to access educational opportunities while working, with the potential to graduate debt free. She also emphasized that the industry provides multiple education and career pathways, ranging from apprenticeship to journeylevel worker to business owner.
ABC Keystone has held the event for more than five years, and Larkin remarked that it requires support from the community to pull it off. “The event is only possible because we have 30 to 35 volunteers each day and very generous member sponsors who provide hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, T-shirts, construction materials and lunches, along with items for goodie bags,” she said.

E-town softball topples L-S, Lebanon and CV
BY ERIC PYLES
It has not been confirmed if the Lady Bears did indeed have a chicken dinner but they put three straight wins under their belt so there was ample opportunity to do so.
The juiciest of those wins came on April 10th in a slug fest with Lampeter-Strasburg that went to E-town by a 1413 final. The game appeared to be in hand after Elizabethtown’s eight run burst in the third made it a 9-1 affair or even after the Lady Bears plated two more in the fourth for an 11-1 cushion. The Lady Pioneers had other ideas and used a 12-run top of the fifth to jump ahead 13-11.
E-town, behind Keira Davis’s RBI double and Sophia Finch’s two-run shot, answered in the bottom half of the frame to regain the lead 14-13. Numerous grey hairs sprouted in the stands as Cassidy Leitzel worked to cover the final six outs and secure the win which she did. Breonna Edgell lost her shot at the win when Leitzel provided relief with one out in the top of the fifth. Both Finch and Davis finished with three RBI while Leitzel and Carli Zerphey added two RBI apiece.
The Lady Bears needed only five innings to skate past Lebanon by a 13-3 final on the 5th. Bailey Grinnell earned the win with Edgell closing things out. The pair
combined for two strikeouts and two walks. Leitzel drove in two runs, but it was Astyn Calaman leading the way with three hits and three RBI that included a two-run homerun in the fifth. Chloe Wilkinson added two RBI on four hits.
Elizabethtown made it an official winning streak by topping Conestoga Valley 4-1 on the 12th. Edgell covered all seven innings, allowing just one unearned run while striking out four and walking three. The Lady Bears benefited from five Lady Buckskin errors but Wilkinson and Kiera Davis both managed one RBI.
CORRECTION In last week’s edition Miranda Davis was incorrectly given credit for three RBI and three hits in the win over Lower Dauphin. Keira Davis was the player with three RBI and three hits.
TRACK
April 11th sent the Bears track team to Quarryville to battle Solanco. The result was a 77-73 heartbreaker for the boys and a 96-54 setback for the girls.
Despite the team loss, the boys opened and closed the meet with wins. Maxwell Gerhart, Merlo, David Shephard, and Dante Checco opened with a win in the 3200m relay while Jason Stark, Djemba N’Dikwe, Owen Dommel and Juan Lopez closed things out with a 1600m relay win. Between
those wins were just six other victories with Caleb Fuge accounting for two with his 110H and 300H wins. Lopez went solo for a 400m victory while Dommel did the same in the 200m. Jackson Kay (800m) and Jaycen Conrad (1600m) were also winners.
The girls had the same opening and closing wins as the boys but posted just five other victories on the day.
Liah Drager, Kendall Hein, Haley DeStefano, and Ellia Spang were responsible for the opening 3200m relay win while Drager, Ali Fink, Audrianna Resetar and Genna McDonald closed the meet with a 1600m relay win. Fink picked up two of the five solo wins, taking the 1600m and 800m races. Jordan DiRisio claimed the 3200m and McDonald the 400m for the final wins on the track. Noreen Lehman earned the lone field victory, topping the javelin field.
VOLLEYBALL
A holiday induced light stretch for the boys’ volleyball team included just a lone match opposite Lebanon on the 11th. The Bears picked up the easy win, posting scores of 25-13, 25-13 and 25-14 thanks to eight kills from both Cooper Torborg and Josh McCoy. Torborg added four blocks while Eli Miller had 37 assists, Austin Thomas three aces and Adam Reedy one dig.
TENNIS
With the end of the boys’ tennis season in sight the Bears are searching for additional wins. Losses to Mechanicsburg, McCaskey and Lampeter-Strasburg dropped E-town to 5-6 with just two dates remaining. The loss to Mechanicsburg on the 6th and McCaskey on the 10th were by the same 5-0 final with Luke Risser picking up the lone win in the 6-1 loss to L-S.

BOYS’ LACROSSE
The 2023 season continues to be a struggle for the boy’s lacrosse team with losses to Cocalico, Bishop McDevitt and Lampeter-Strasburg keeping the Bears winless on the season.
E-town fell to Cocalico on April 5th by a 23-3 count with 15 Josiah Erb saves not nearly enough to stem the Eagle surge. Holden Haver netted two of the three goals with Carson NyeSmith nabbing the other.
E-town hosted McDevitt on the 10th. The Crusaders left with a 7-3 win. This time it was Elijah Poulos posting the two-goal game while Haver accounted for the final score. Erb finished with seven saves.
The Bears invited Lampeter-Strasburg to play on the 11th with the Pioneers posting a 15-2 victory before leaving town. Erb split time in goal with AJ Bush with the duo combining for nine saves, five by Erb. Christian Robinson and Dylan Ginder split the offense in the loss.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
The Lady Bears’ lacrosse team was able to avoid their own three-game slide thanks to their 13-6 win over McDevitt
on the 10th. E-town used an 82 second half push to pull away.
Dani Bruno led the way with six goals with Moira Shott and Callie Love-Morris adding two each. Aiesha Rios, Piper Patrick, and Charley Lengel-Kramer split the remaining three scores. Sydney Pope needed seven saves to secure the win.
The Lady Bears may have exited the holiday break with a win, but they were not able to enter the break in the same way after falling to Cocalico by a 13-9 final on the 5th. This time Pope’s seven saves were not enough to keep E-town on top. Josie Spayd and LoveMorris netted two scores each with Patrick, Shott, Rios, Joy NgaFua, and Isabelle Bailey picking up one each apiece.
Things were not as close in E-town April 11th loss with the Lady Bears falling to Lampeter-Strasburg by a 17-5 final. Bruno regained her top scoring spot with four lamp lighters with Love-Morris tacking on the final score. Pope finished with four saves.
BASEBALL

Offense was hard to find in E-town’s 2-0 win over the Pioneers on the 10th with the two sides combining for two runs and five hits. Thankfully, the Bears had three of those hits with Braden Cummings’ second inning single driving in a run. Luis Perez accounted for the other run, drawing a bases loaded walk. Isaiah Shayter covered the initial six innings to earn the win while Pike Burkett kept the shutout intact with a scoreless seventh.
Elizabethtown returned home for their April 12th battle with Conestoga Valley, sending the Buckskins packing after a 7-2 victory. This time it was Kaden Kimble going six innings to pick up the win with Evan Hassinger covering the final three outs. Burkett and Josh Rudy each finished with one hit and two RBI to pace the offense.
provided by Rose Ann Wade, president of the Elizabeth Hughes Society, the women originally met under the name The Delphian Society. They encountered obstacles in their pursuit of creating the library, including meeting resistance from local businessmen and community leaders when they approached them for financial support of the project. Still, the women persevered, and the library opened its doors on Nov. 18, 1925. At the time, it was located in a room of the Odd Fellows Hall on South Market Street, adjoining the Elizabethtown Post Office. A Library Association was created in 1926 to turn the library over to the community, but the group soon disbanded, as did The Delphian Society.
Undeterred, the same group of women recruited other women in the community to f orm the Elizabeth Hughes Society on April 28, 1928. The organization was named in honor of the wife of the f ounder of Elizabethtown.
Beginning with about 25 members, the organization grew to 120 women by the end of its first year. Over the years, the society was instrumental in helping the library grow,
including overseeing its move to its current location in 1961.
The women of the Elizabeth Hughes Society funded and operated the library from its inception until it became a public library with the move. Since then, the group has continued to support the library with an annual financial donation.
The society has also held other annual projects to support early childhood literacy, said Wade. “Since 1987, the society has conducted a Third Grade Read In program, in which every third-grade classroom in the district was visited by a member of the Elizabeth Hughes Society to read to the children,” she stated. “Each class was gifted a package of books for their individual classroom as well as a gift of candy from the Mars Corporation.” This program was discontinued during the pandemic, and then the district teacher who had selected the books for the program each year retired. “Offering the $100 donation directly to … Hibshman was an alternative to the Third Grade Read In,” Wade explained. “She selected six quality titles, which she wished to include in the library.”
Chicken barbecue will benefit Mt. Hope
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Spring is a busy season for many of us, so take a load off your plate and make plans to pick up dinner on Friday, May 5. Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community will host a drive-through chicken barbecue dinner in the parking lot of LCBC, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim, from 4 to 6 p.m. The meal will include Peters’ Barbecue fire-grilled chicken, gourmet cheesy potatoes, savory baked beans with bacon, a dinner roll with butter, Mt. Hope’s famous coleslaw and a dessert. Proceeds from the dinner will benefit Mt. Hope, a 50-bed skilled nursing facility and rehabilitation center providing care for seniors and people with disabilities regardless of their ability to pay.
“Most residents at Mt. Hope do not have financial resources to cover the cost of their care, and a growing gap
of about $150 a day exists between what a resident is able to pay and the cost of daily care,” explained Kris Wilson, director of advancement. “That’s why these fundraisers are so very important for Mt. Hope and the care we provide. Any gift to Mt. Hope is appreciated and makes a huge difference.”
Wilson noted that a new opportunity has been created to support Mt. Hope on an ongoing basis. “This spring is the perfect time to join in a monthly partnership with Mt. Hope,” she stated. “We’re kicking off our monthly giving opportunities and welcoming new growth, which brings exciting energy and life to Mt. Hope. Our monthly giving program enables Mt. Hope to finance
our day-to-day activities and cover daily operating expenses.”
Wilson emphasized that the facility is growing in several ways, with new programming, building upgrades and new staff members. “Our care team is growing with the addition of two excellent team members: Michelle Weber, a registered nurse and director of nursing, as well as Steph Book, occupational therapist

BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“They say if you want to succeed, it’s who you know,” said Deb Schleh, extolling the benefits of networking. “We believe it’s what you know and who you know.”
Give the Gift of Time
Do you have a lifetime of experience as a mother or mentor and want to share that knowledge?
Are you looking for a one-on-one volunteer opportunity where you can make a meaningful and impactful difference in a young mother’s life?
If you answered YES, consider becoming a Sage Mentor.
Schleh, a member of the Friends of Donegal, said that’s the motivation behind the Community Building Blocks Expo, an event designed to introduce the community to services available to everyone.
The expo will be held on Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. along Delta and Henry streets and inside the reception center at Sheetz Funeral Home, 16 E. Main St., Mount Joy. A rain date is scheduled for Saturday, May 6.
As Schleh explained, the idea for the expo came from a community dinner held at the end of a Getting Ahead class offered by Friends of Donegal, a nonprofit created to be a one-stop shop to help close the gaps between needs and services in the community. “At the dinner, we invited people in from different organizations in the community,” she recalled, noting that Getting Ahead is a class designed to help people get ahead financially rather than just getting by. “Part of Getting Ahead is not only to help participants gain skills, but also to give back to the community. Out of the community dinner came the idea, ‘Why not do this on a larger scale?’”
The expo will feature a wide variety of nonprofit organizations and businesses, all geared toward providing services ranging from financial support to housing. Members of the Mount Joy Borough Police Department, EMS and
fire department will be on-site as well.
Nancy Stehman, a member of the expo committee, said the Getting Ahead class opened her eyes to community resources. “I realized I could make connections and build my social capital through networking,” she stated. “People might not realize there is free medical care. People might not have a good relationship with the police. Coming to the expo will give them the opportunity to come out and talk to the police, to learn about programs and services that could benefit them.”
Along with information tables, the expo will feature activities for people of all ages, Stehman said, adding, “We’ll have fun and games, too. We’ll have food trucks. It’s a family event.”
A silent auction of items,
including paintings by a local artist, themed baskets and gift cards to local businesses, will help cover the operational costs of Getting Ahead and its follow-up class, Staying Ahead.
Christina Helfrick, vice president of Friends of Donegal, explained that both programs are open to anyone in the community who’s interested. “We’ve grown the program over the years to focus on interactivity with the community and building bridges,” she stated. “Part of the expo is about building bridges between community members and organizations.”
There will be an opportunity to sign up for a Getting Ahead or Staying Ahead class at the expo. For more information on Friends of Donegal or the expo, visit https:// friendsofdonegal.orgor search for “Friends of Donegal” on Facebook.
