Stitching the past and the present together

“Everyquilt tells a story,” said Teresa St. Angelo, director of the Winters Heritage House Museum. “Our display of historical and contemporary quilts will tell many different stories. From the story behind the designs created and sewn to the designers to the material chosen, visitors will discover many new stories.”

The museum, located at 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown, will host a Quilt Show and Heritage Days Celebration from Wednesday, May 10, through Saturday, May 13. Local, handmade quilts will be displayed throughout the rustic log

cabins at the museum, while members from the museum’s quilt, textile, craft and garden groups will be on hand to answer questions and demonstrate their work.

As St. Angelo explained, this will be the 32nd year the museum has hosted the quilt show, but the first year it is adding the Heritage Days Celebration. “Our quilters group wanted to celebrate all the Winters Heritage House offers the community and showcase the different crafters, textile groups, programs and volunteers that preserve and promote the traditions and history of the past,” she explained.

She noted that the Heritage Days Celebration will include something

for people of all ages. “Visitors can expect family fun activities along with a look at the past traditions and customs that are continued and enjoyed today,” she stated. “Our quilters have a special activity for the youngest of quilters called Add a Stitch. … We have a ‘make a Mother’s Day card area’ along with other fun crafts with our signature ‘Early Settlers of Elizabethtown’ theme. … Attendees can visit our Colonial garden and pick up information or plant and grow your handprint. There will be music, spinning demonstrations from our textile groups, tours and quilt evaluations on special days. A local artist will be on hand to inspire and create live pieces.”

Guided tours will be offered by docent Mary Conrad on Friday, May 12, at 1, 2 and 3 p.m., as well as on Saturday at 1, 1:45 and 2:30 p.m. Ann Holte of Filaments Studio in Hummelstown will give quilt evaluations on Friday between 1 and 5 p.m. People are encouraged to bring their own quilts to discover the covering’s history. Abigail’s Garden, a local Celtic and folk trio, will perform Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Food will be available to purchase from Ella’s Sweet Bites on Saturday as well.

“Discover Winters Heritage House,” St. Angelo encouraged. “It is a unique place to gather and learn something new, connect with old friends, meet new friends, create, socialize and relax in our cabins and gardens. Winters Heritage Museum is an Elizabethtown treasure.”

The Quilt Show and Heritage Days Celebration will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday; on Thursday, May 11; and on Saturday. It will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday. For more information, visit www.elizabethtownhistory.org or follow Winters Heritage House Museum on Facebook.

For half a century, the Elizabethtown Fair has been entertaining people throughout the region with a week of family fun. You can help support the fair by picking up dinner on Saturday, May 13. The 37th annual

Elizabethtown Fair chicken barbecue will be held at the fairgrounds, 900 E. High St., with drive-through pickup from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dinners will include a half-chicken, potato chips, applesauce, a roll, a dessert and a drink. There is also an option to purchase just a half-chicken.

Trucking on to grant wishes

Think of the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy, and you might think of a long line of trucks traveling down the roads of Lancaster County. That is certainly central to the event, said Terry Finch, event chairperson, but that is just part of a special day.

“Our event is anchored by the Convoy trucks and our extremely generous truck drivers, but it is so much more,” Finch shared about the event that kicks off at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. “It’s a community celebration of our Wish Children, and we hope everyone who joins us can take part in the games and fun that happens

inside the Auto Auction lanes.”

This year’s Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will take place on Sunday, May 14, at the Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. Beginning at 9 a.m., a Family Carnival will feature food trucks, carnival games, music, mascots and Make-AWish merchandise sales. Across Auction Road from the main building and truck lot, there will be a chicken dinner available for drive-through pickup, Finch noted. “There is also an online auction running the entire week before the Convoy and ending at midnight the next day, featuring Wish Kid art, jewelry, golf foursomes, gift cards and much more,” she shared.

One Day or Day One

Laughter, a crowd cheering, or even a conversation with a friend or loved one helps to shape our lives, adding richness and texture to all our experiences. When hearing works like it should, your brain gets the rich input it needs to understand the sounds around you. But when your brain lacks access to the real sounds of life due to a hearing problem, it’s forced to work harder to fill in the gaps, which can be tiring. In addition, you could miss out on something special. Are you ready to take the first step towards better hearing? We are here for you to start day one of your journey.

We can help your family honor and remember your loved ones with the highest quality service in our private crematory.

E-town baseball tops Solanco and CV

The old sports adage says you want to peak at the right time, hitting your full stride right as the postseason kicks off. It appears as if the baseball team is right on schedule, using wins over Solanco and Conestoga Valley to improve to 11-5 on the season.

The Bears needed just five innings to top Solanco, 13-3, on April 27th thanks to the work of Kayden Kimble, Evan Hassinger, Luis

Perez, Braden Cummings, and Cade Capello. Kimble and Hassinger handled the pitching duties with Kimble picking up the win after covering the initial four innings. That left Hassinger to take care of the fifth, adding his one punch out to Kimble’s three.

Perez and Capello both enjoyed two hit days that included a single and triple for each. Perez pushed three runs across with his two hits while Capello finished with two RBI. Cummings also had two RBI but did so with just one hit.

Elizabethtown kicked off May with a 7-2 win over Conestoga Valley on the 2nd. Justin Borger stepped up to start and earned the win, striking out eight and allowing two runs over five innings. Pike Burkett cleaned up the final two frames, tacking on two strikeouts and two walks to the team tally.

The Bears used a true team effort to plate their seven runs with Cummings, Josh Rudy, Perez, Elijah McFarlane, Nathan Yohn, Drew Hitz and Capello all finishing with one RBI.

VOLLEYBALL

A light week left the boys’ volleyball team with just a 3-0 win over Ephrata, pushing their overall record to 7-6. The two sides battled in all three games, but E-town was able to come out on top 2521, 25-20 and 25-22. Eli Miller finished with 34 assists and Josh McCoy 12 kills to lead the way.

Adam Reedy added two aces, Austin Thomas six digs and Cooper Torborg two blocks.

TRACK

The track teams opened the month of May by hosting Garden Spot. The result was a 95.3-54-7 win for the boys and a 76-74 loss for the Lady Bears.

Ali Fink was the lone multievent winner for the girls, taking both the 800m and 1600m. Genna McDonald picked up the final solo win on the track with a 62.0 in the 400m. The Lady Bears did add a 1600m relay win as well.

Five different athletes took the top spot in five different field events starting with Anna Rank in the pole vault. Jebbah Ngafua topped the triple jump while Sara Mathias (shot put), Sidney Avers (discus) and Noreen Lehman (javelin) accounted for the remaining wins.

The boys did their heavy lifting on the track with only Caleb Kreider’s long jump and triple jump wins coming in the field. The Bears helped their cause by taking both the 400m relay and the 1600m relay races. Juan Lopez and Caleb Fuge both pulled a double with Lopez taking the 100m and 400m while Fuge swept the 110 and 300 hurdles. Owen Dommel finished the sprint domination by taking the 200m while Jackson Kay claimed the 800m. Jaycen Conrad joined Lopez and Fuge with two wins, taking the 1600m and 3200m.

BOYS’ LACROSSE Winner, winner!! It is just one game but when that one game is your first victory of the season it is a big deal. Such is the case for the E-town boy’s lacrosse team after

their 10-3 victory over Cedar Cliff on May 1st. Josiah Erb needed just four saves to earn the win thanks to the work of Christian Robinson and Carson NyeSmith. The pair split six goals with Robinson adding three assists. Dylan Ginder and Ethan Ginder added two scores each.

Bookended around that win were losses to Cocalico and Ephrata. The 22-2 loss to Cocalico took place April 27th with Bryce Kauffman and Wyatt Wawrzyniak accounting for the offense. Erb finished with 22 saves.

The Bears found themselves on the wrong end of a 17-2 final on the 2nd, this time with Ephrata inflicting the damage. Erb tallied seven saves while NyeSmith and Dylan Ginder split the two scores.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Close does not count in lacrosse, making a one-goal loss count the same as any other. Of course, that does not mean one-goal losses do not sting, in fact they are often more difficult to handle.

The girls’ lacrosse team suffered two such losses in back-to-back games, leaving the Lady Bears with a four-game slide and a 9-7 mark as the season nears a close.

The first of those two losses came on April 27th with Cocalico using an 8-4 first half edge to hang on for the 11-10 win. Dani Bruno picked up

another four scores while Aiesha Rios, Piper Patrick, and Callie LoveMorris all netted two goals. Sydney Pope finished with 10 saves.

May 2nd sent E-town to Ephrata for a game that went to the home side by a 12-11 final. Pope finished with four saves this time around while Patrick and Bruno both finished with a hat trick. Moira Shott and Rios tacked on two scores each with Love-Morris cleaning up the final score.

SOFTBALL

Rough patches are fairly common over the course of a high school sports season and the E-town softball team is smack in the middle of such a stretch. The Lady Bears dropped games to Conestoga Valley and Solanco with only a win over Lebanon to ease the frustration of a 9-8 overall record.

The win over Lebanon opened May with Elizabethtown needing six innings to claim the 10-0 result. Breonna Edgell covered all six innings, recording two strikeouts and two walks. Madison Bell carried the big stick with three RBI, but it was Julia Joyce who stole the show. The senior enjoyed Senior Night, collecting her first hit of the season, and driving in two runs in the process. Astyn Calaman also finished with two RBI on three hits.

The win was a welcome relief with the Lady Bears coming off a 9-8 loss to Conestoga Valley on April 26th. Edgell took the loss, walking 10 and striking out eight over six and two-thirds innings. Cassidy Leitzel recorded the final out for Elizabethtown. Keira Davis flexed, adding a sac fly to her sixth inning grand slam, giving the freshman five RBI. Ava Fair, Sophie Finch and Calaman added one RBI each.

The Lady Bears were not able to hang with Solanco on the 2nd, falling by an 11-1 final in six innings. Edgell and Leitzel split the pitching duties and finished with three walks and no strikeouts.

TENNIS

The boy’s tennis season officially ended with the Bears taking part in the L-L Flight Championship starting April 27th. The going was tough for E-town with no Bears managing to make it out of the opening round. Luke Risser fell in number one singles, Finn Grinnell in number three singles and Ethan Duralja in number four singles. Grinnell and Duralja fell in number two doubles while Risser and Evan Morgan did the same in Flight One doubles. Bennett Kreider and Levi Sites were the final E-town duo to bow out, doing so in the number three doubles bracket.

Food Drive to Stamp Out Hunger set

The National Association of Letter Carriers will hold its 30th annual National Food Drive to Stamp Out Hunger on Saturday, May 13. Lancaster County letter carriers will pick up nonperishable food donations during their routes. All donations collected will be donated to local food pantries.

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is timed to resupply local food pantries when they are usually depleted and entering the summer with low supplies. Residents are encouraged to donate nonperishable food items, place them in a bag, and leave the bag in or around their mailbox the morning of May 13.

The top requested nonperishable food items are cereal, pasta, pasta sauce or spaghetti sauce, rice, canned fruits and vegetables, canned meals (such as soups, chili, and pasta), 100% juice, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, canned meats or fish, beans (canned or dry),

and shelf-stable milk that does not require refrigeration. Healthy, lowsodium, low-sugar items such as beans, oatmeal and other whole grains, and canola or olive oil are also requested. All items should be unexpired and in plastic or cardboard packaging. Items should not be in glass jars or bottles.

Juggler Chris Ivey to perform

The Conoy Township youth organization CONNEC+ will sponsor a performance by Christian juggler Chris Ivey on Thursday, May 18. The show will begin at 6 p.m. at Word of Life Chapel, 139 Wickersham Road, Bainbridge. The program is open to the public and free of charge. Youths and adults are invited to attend.

The Make-A-Wish event brings independent drivers and trucking companies from all over the Susquehanna Valley as well as from across the country to participate in the festivities that raise funds needed to grant 75% of the annual wishes in the

Susquehanna Valley. Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley grants wishes for children with critical illnesses. Over the years, the Convoy has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars. “In recent years, our record fundraising was just over $600,000,” Finch noted. “Our goal for this year is $700,000.” She said organizers are hoping for 400 trucks to participate in the Convoy this year.

“Our drivers fundraise all year long,” she explained, “and the top fundraisers in dollars earned make up the top 30 drivers in the Convoy. They are the front row of trucks and will lead out the event as they travel along the Convoy route.” The top driver will pull the Wish Angel trailer, which is a tribute to Wish Children in the chapter area who have passed away in the 34 years since the Convoy began. “Each year, we add names to stars on the trailer before it goes on the route,” Finch remarked. “During our 12 p.m. announcements at the stage, we also ask the top 30 drivers to put their hands on the trailer and have a moment of silence for our Wish Angels.”

When the Convoy heads out, Wish Children are invited to ride along with the drivers, said Finch, noting that up to 100 of them have joined drivers in the past.

The route will run from Manheim to Elizabethtown and Mount Joy, and Finch encourages people to watch the Convoy along the route and cheer on the Wish Children. She recommends viewing the Convoy at LCBC on Route 772 in Manheim, where there will be food trucks and special visitors, and anywhere along Main Street in Mount Joy.
