Advoz,a Lancaster city-based organization, works to reduce conflict through mediation, restorative practices and education. Since the beginning of the 2022-23 school year, the organization has been partnering with Elizabethtown Area School District to promote restorative practices in the district’s middle and high schools.

Krista Rittenhouse, director of restorative practices for Advoz, explained that the Elizabethtown programming began before the school year started this past fall. Listening sessions, consultations and trainings have provided a

for peace in schools

framework for the program in the schools. “We’ve been doing training for both administrators and teachers, and we have a part-time trained facilitator, someone who is embedded in the school a few hours a week, to be able to provide additional support for restorative processes in the school,” Rittenhouse said.

As she explained, restorative practices focus on empowering student voices, so that decisions are made with the people in a situation, rather than for those people.

“It doesn’t mean that there’s chaos and students don’t have responsibility, but instead it means they are invited to imagine what’s best for them and advocate for their needs,

as well as participate in creating solutions,” Rittenhouse stated. “It also invites teachers to have a collaborative atmosphere that engages and empowers their students.” Peer mediation and leadership positions are offered to students, fostering an environment of accountability.

“If someone does something that causes harm or disruption to either another specific individual or another group of people, the restorative practitioner would talk to that person and invite them to consider what’s behind their actions, what they were thinking or feeling and what the motivation was for their behavior,” Rittenhouse explained. The restorative practitioner would also talk to the other

people involved to see how to support them and alleviate any harm they experienced. Restorative justice, she noted, seeks to shift the focus from blame and punishment to prevention through community building and nurturing relationships. In a nutshell, restorative practices are about creating conversations to reach solutions, rather than relying solely on punishment, Rittenhouse stated.

According to statistics supplied by Advoz, schools that participate in restorative justice programs have an 87% reduction in the number of suspensions of students, with expulsions being entirely eliminated on some campuses. Additionally, 64% of teachers who use

New Clinic for Special Children breaks ground

On April 4, the sun shone brightly over the tent set up at the site along Hatville Road in Intercourse where the new Clinic for Special Children (CSC) will be built. Herman Bontrager, board chair of CSC and chair of the Keeping the Promise: Building Hope Capital Campaign, welcomed the gathering, noting, “We have a perfect day.” The groundbreaking and tree planting that occurred on the site not only celebrated the new building, but also commemorated the founding of CSC by Dr. Holmes Morton and his wife, Caroline, 34 years ago. “They had the vision and courage to establish a clinic to serve children with genetically transmitted diseases here in Lancaster County,” said Bontrager, who noted that the new building will help more families, allow for the innovation of new therapies, and be a place of comfort and hope for generations to come. He stated that more than 1,700 donors have contributed to the $8.8 million raised toward the $12.5 million goal of the campaign.

Adam Heaps, CSC executive director, pointed out that the need had outgrown the current facility in Strasburg. “We endeavored to design a (new) building that offers refuge to families with rare disease. Every detail of the building was designed for the benefit of patient families,” he said.

restorative justice believe it helps them to build caring relationships with their students, and 69% of teachers report a positive impact on school climate, ultimately leading to an increase in safety.

This is the first relationship Advoz has with a school district in Lancaster County, and Rittenhouse is optimistic that other schools will join as partners in the future.

She noted that anyone who is interested in learning more about restorative justice, whether professionally or with the hope to become a volunteer, should start with “Advoz Introduction to Conflict, Com-

munication and Culture” training. The next training will be held on Tuesday, June 6, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. After that, people can take further training in their area of interest. For the full list of upcoming trainings and their dates, visit https://advoz.org/training.

Glenn Zimmerman, a member of the board of directors and chair of the Gift in Kind committee, said that volunteers and donors to the Gift in Kind campaign have unique connections to the CSC mission. “It is inspiring to see everyone come together for this monumental project,” he said, adding that the committee has secured more than $1.49 million in materials and labor.

John J. Herman, chief executive

officer with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, spoke of the collaborative relationship between his organization and CSC, telling the story of a patient born with spinal muscular atrophy who received gene replacement therapy shortly after birth. “Her life is forever changed,” he said. “The construction of this facility keeps state-ofthe-art care here in Lancaster.”

County Commissioners Ray D’Agostino and Joshua Parsons spoke, as did Frank Howe, chair of the Leacock Township Board of Supervisors.

Idario Santos, whose son was born in Brazil with maple syrup urine disease, spoke of the difference CSC made when the disease could not be treated in his home country. “People ask what the clinic did for my son, but the question is really ‘What did the clinic do for my family?’” He said when his family came to the U.S. he saw children with the disease playing normally while his son had to be in the hospital. “He is the first

patient cured from Brazil,” said Santos. “I know what the clinic can do for others like my family.”

Dr. Kevin A. Strauss, medical director for CSC, said, “The family of Idario Santos have shown us what it means to build hope. Hope is not so much a feeling but an act that demands our commitment and effort.” He added, “The future of the clinic is not in concrete, bricks, and mortar, but in the hearts of the people who seek our care. This project is our promise to them.”

The ceremony concluded with the planting of a tree. Richie Lauer, who gave the blessing, prayed, “If this tree lives, it will be because (God) provided the nutrients, rain, and sunshine. If this clinic serves for generations to come, it will be because (God) provided the resources.” Board members hope the new clinic will open in 2024. More information about the clinic may be found at www.Clinicfor SpecialChildren.org.

Bears battle Cocalico in regular season finale

Win and you are in. It is the perfect scenario for any sports team looking to secure a postseason berth. And it was exactly the setup for the Elizabethtown boys’ volleyball team and their May 11th clash with Cocalico. Win and move your record to 9-3 which secures second place in Section Two and the L-L playoff berth that comes with the win. Unfortunately for the Bears the season finale went to the Eagles by scores of 25-12, 25-12 and 25-20 with the 3-0 Cocalico win lumping Cocalico, E-town and Garden Spot together in second place with matching 8-4 records and giving the L-L berth to the Spartans.

Cooper Torborg finished with five kills and five blocks with Eli Miller adding 18 assists and Prabin Bhattarai nine digs.

TRACK

If the calendar reads the second weekend in May look no further than Hempfield High School if you are in need of a track and field fix. Every year the L-L track world gathers in Landisville for the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship Meet and this year

was no different with the twoday event taking place May 12th and 13th. Both sides of the Bear contingent collected six medals with a few near misses, leaving the Lady Bears 10th in the team standings and the boys 13th.

Ali Fink fronted the Lady Bear push, finishing fourth in both the 1600m (5:16.85) and the 800m (2:23.62). Jordan DiRisio joined Fink on the 1600m podium, finishing sixth with a time of 5:23.50. DiRisio was one of the near misses for E-town with her 11:56.50 placing her tenth which was roughly eight seconds out of the medal count.

Anna Rank just missed gold in the pole vault while setting a new school record, topping out at 12’, the same height as ELCO’s Carissa Bender but the Lady Raider senior took the top spot with fewer misses. Felicia Morris captured Elizabethtown’s lone bronze, covering 36-3.25 with her top triple jump. Noreen Lehman collected the final medal, finishing fifth in the javelin with a top toss of 108-6. Genna McDonald was another near miss, her 62.20 placing her tenth in the 400m and just over a second out of a medal.

The boy’s 13th place team finish was highlighted by three relay medals, starting with the work of Donte Checco, Nate Merlo, Trevor Merlo, and Max Gerhart who claimed eighth with an 8:27.59 in the 3200m relay. The 1600m relay team of Jason Stark, Djemba N’Dikwe, Owen Dommel and Juan Lopez posted a 3:28.04, good enough for fourth place after the dust settled. Add in the eighthplace finish from the 400m

relay team of Dommel, N’Dikwe, Stark and Anthony Wreh and E-town collected seven of their 19 team points in relay events.

Lopez posted the top solo finish, taking fourth in the 400m with a 50.50. Stark and his 52.69 ended up in 12th place, just over a second off the medal stand. Caleb Fuge added a fifth place run in the 110 hurdles, posting a 15.53 in the finals. Jackson Kay picked up the final medal on the track with his seventhplace time of 1:59.67 in the 800m while Colin Rilatt seized the final solo medal with a toss of 120-5 in the discus, good enough for eighth place.

Jaysen Conrad just missed the podium in two separate events, his 9:59.24 placing him ninth in the 3200m while his 4:30.55 had him tenth in the 1600m. Bradley Kreider was a few steps behind Conrad in the 1600m, taking 11th with his 4:24.31.

Marking Memorial Day in Maytown

On Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, Maytown will honor and remember veterans with several events. Beginning at 12:30 p.m., a ceremony will be held in Maytown Square, with a prayer led by the Rev. Dr. Ronnette Comfort-Butler from Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ. Members of the Bainbridge Band will provide music, and wreaths will be placed on the veterans’ markers in the square. The names of Maytown veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice will be read. The grand marshal, Jeff Armold, and the Poppy Princess, Isabella Love, will be on hand for the square ceremony, which will end with

the playing of taps. Armold served in the U.S. Air Force from 1972 to 1977. Isabella, the daughter of Dan and Janet Love, is a ninth-grader at Donegal High School.

Following the ceremony, people are invited to participate in the decorating of graves of local veterans with flowers provided by Floral Designs of Mount Joy. Anyone who wants to help should meet at the Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ, 11 E. Elizabeth St., immediately following the ceremony in the square. After decorating graves there, the group will walk to the Lutheran and Union cemeteries at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 11 N. Queen St., to decorate graves of veterans at that site.

Additionally, there will be a brick dedication ceremony on the square at 2 p.m. on Memorial Day.

At 4 p.m., the annual Memorial Day parade will step off. Families and groups are invited to compete for prizes by dressing up or decorating to match the theme

“Tomorrow, Because of Yesterday.”

“In the past, floats have been judged, and the winners were given a monetary prize for first, second or third place,” said Janie Garber, chair of the parade committee. “This year, we’ve added something new. We are encouraging families to march or to decorate their bicycles and ride along with us, and we are giving a new cash award for best of show in this category.”

Cece Emswiler, currently serving in the U.S. Army, decorates a veteran’s grave at last year’s Maytown Memorial Day ceremony.

She noted that the Memorial Day parade is a long-standing event in Maytown; a parade has been held to honor veterans since 1902. It is truly a community effort, she stated, adding that the parade relies on support from East Donegal Township residents as well as local organizations, including American

Legion Post 809. “This is the first time we have reached out to local businesses for help with the Memorial Day events, and we got an overwhelming response from them being willing to serve as sponsors,” Garber noted. “Celebrating Memorial Day is a tradition in Maytown.”

Resident writes book about illness, service dog

May 30 is World Multiple Sclerosis Day. Joan Patterson, a local resident living with multiple sclerosis, has written a book about her experiences with this incurable disease and her relationship with her service dog, Faith.

Patterson’s book, a compilation of short narratives, is titled “A Matter of Faith: Surviving Life’s Crises With Four W heels, Four Paws, and a Loving God.” When multiple sclerosis entered Patterson’s life, she faltered in her joy, her

faith, and the confidence to continue being an asset to society. Her relationship with her service dog, Faith, restored her independence and strengthened her relationship with God.

She noted that she wrote “A Matter of Faith” not only to tell the story of her relationship with Faith, but also for those who are frustrated with life and their current relationship with God.

Patterson holds an associate degree in Bible and a Bachelor

of Science in interdisciplinary studies of business and education. She taught in Christian schools for seven years and a business school for three years. Since partnering with Faith, she has represented Canine Partners for Life at various venues.

Patterson is available to speak about her book, her experiences living with multiple sclerosis, and her service dog. For more information, contact Patterson at 717-870-8999 or Joan@JoanPatterson.org.

A little over a year ago, John Wenger purchased the old Hoffman’s Car Wash, located at 640 Peach Alley in Elizabethtown. He has spent over a year and $1 million repairing, repaving and renovating the facility. He has renamed it Tidal Wave Express Car Wash and Wagging Tails Dog Wash. It is now open for business.

Tidal Wave Express Car Wash and Wagging Tails Dog Wash has been completely refitted with the latest equipment. The facility offers a hot water wash; a touchless wash; a soft-touch wash; and four self-serve bays, including a large bay for trucks, RVs, boats and trailers that is 13.5 feet high. Bright lights have been added around the perimeter to allow the wash to be used safely 24 hours a day.

Two self-serve dog washes have been added, each in its own individual room. Both rooms are indoors in a climate-controlled environment. There is also a separate indoor waiting area.

Wenger is seeking input from his clientele on ways to improve the car wash and dog wash. For example, some customers have asked for a discount for frequent washings, so the facility will soon offer debit cards that can be purchased at reduced prices. Those with ideas are asked to contact Wenger at Care@TidalWave Etown.com or 717-989-3145.

For more information about the car wash and dog wash, visit www.TidalWaveEtown.com.
