Flying high
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
ShaunBrumm’s happy place isn’t on the ground. It’s 20 feet in the air. Shaun, the son of Steve and Danielle Brumm of Bainbridge,is a competitive trampoline athlete. He recently brought home a gold medal from a national USA Gymnastics competition in Dallas.
“The thing I love most about this sport is the rush it gives you,” said Shaun, who just graduated from Elizabethtown Area High School. “Between jumping 20 feet in the air or competing in front of a large arena, there’s no better feeling.”
Shaun began trampoline at the age of 2, when he joined a parent and tot class with his mother. He began competing at the age of 6.
“I do two events - one is double mini and the other is competitive trampoline,” Shaun shared. Double mini includes running to gain power before jumping on the trampoline and landing on a mat, while trampoline is similar to what people may have in their backyards, only a lot bouncier, he noted.
At the national competition, Shaun took gold in the double mini, which he says he took up to add another event and make travel to competitions worthwhile. “Dallas was an amazing trip filled with lots of laughs and fun times with my family and team members,” remarked Shaun, who was accompanied by his main coach, McKenzie Benedict. “When it came to winning double mini, I had no idea I was going to win.” He noted that he typically focuses and trains the hardest on trampoline, and he’s won more competitions with that skill. “I do double mini more for fun,” he stated. “I never expected that would become the event I took home a national title with.”
In fact, going into the finals, Shaun was in fifth place. “I was nearly three points behind first, and in this sport, three points is lotalmost like being down 20 points in
Creativity
encouraged at kids’ arts and crafts workshops
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“Summertime should be a time for fun - a time to try new things without stress,” said Teresa St. Angelo, director of the Winters Heritage House Museum. With that in mind, she invites children age 8 and up to participate in kids’ summer arts and crafts workshops at the museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown.
A felted soap workshop will be held on Thursday, June 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. It will be taught by Susan Wheelersburg. “Participants will use a needle and a bar of soap to learn the wet felting technique,” St. Angelo stated. “It is easy, fun and the results are fantastic.” The registration deadline for the soap workshop is Friday, June 16.
On Wednesday, July 19, a sewing workshop will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. “The sewing workshop will allow participants to be creative in their choices of stitches and designs in order to make a stuffed pillow,” said St. Angelo, who will lead the workshop. The registration deadline f or the sewing workshop is Wednesday, July 12.
basketball,” he said. But he kept his cool, noting that being able to relax is a key to success in the sport. “You only have one try to win, not an hour-plus like in other sports,” he said. “One single try on each pass, and if you aren’t relaxed for that one try, you’ll almost always fall.”
At the end of June, Shaun will travel to Tulsa, Okla., to take part in another national competition. He noted that he’s both excited and nervous to compete, adding that he
lost his consistent practice space locally two days after winning in Dallas. “It’s been challenging finding times and places to train, but like I always say, nothing worth having comes easy,” he commented. Shaun plans to attend HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College in Lancaster before transferring to Penn State. “My plans are to study ICU nursing in college,” he said. “I’ve always had such a strong desire to be a part of
the medical field. My eventual goal is to get my flight paramedics and begin working on the Flight for Life teams.”
He credits his success in his sport with being able to enjoy the ups and downs of the journey - no pun intended. “You can’t be so fixed on the end goals that you forget how to even get there,” he said. “I love this sport and the people. Winning and competing is simply an added bonus to me.”
A weaving workshop will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 10. “The weaving workshop will be done using drinking straws and yarn to weave bookmarks and bracelets, with each participant using beads to finish it off,” shared St. Angelo, who will also teach this workshop. The registration deadline is Thursday, Aug. 3.

The Winters Heritage House has offered summer camp programs and family craft days in the past, but St. Angelo wanted to feature something new this year. “Giving kids opportunities to be creative, socialize, learn something new and have fun is the driving force behind providing these programs, and there is something special about the Winters Heritage House,” she shared. “The three original log cabins are quaint, cozy, welcoming and inspiring.”
She noted that experience is not required to participate in any of the workshops, although the classes are not just for beginners. “Help will be given with every step along the way,” she stated. “All programs are geared toward kids so they can accomplish and create at their pace and level.”
Children may participate in individual workshops or all three. A discount will be offered for children registering for the series as well as for registering siblings.
“As a young girl, I tried different activities, and the enjoyment and sense of accomplishment when I could use my creativity was memorable,” St. Angelo remarked. “I look forward to providing workshops where boys and girls can create and feel pride in their work.”
St. Angelo noted that classes will be capped at 10 participants, but people may call the museum at 717-3674672 after the registration deadline to see if there are spaces available. For more information or to register, visit https://tinyurl.com/58fn4hzy.

Executive visits child care center
Michelle Kang, chief executive officer of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), visited Pennsylvania to tour an accredited early childhood care and learning program and speak at the annual gala of the Pennsylvania Association for the Education of Young Children (PennAEYC).
Kang toured Elizabethtown Child Care Center, which became nationally accredited by NAEYC in the mid-1980s and is also a Keystone STARS level 4 program, demonstrating the site has met a high standard of program quality. As Kang toured the site, she played with the children and learned about the early childhood care and learning services being offered to the children from the teachers and staff.
Elizabethtown Child Care Center serves 100 children age 6 weeks to sixth grade, including children whose families receive child care subsidies. The center employs 31 teachers and staff members. The center director is Christina Kalyan, and the assistant director is Kristi Long.
The day was capped with Kang’s keynote during PennAEYC’s annual gala to celebrate the 2023 Voice for Children Awards. Attendees at the event included the following PennAEYC staff members: Kim Early, senior director of public policy
and advocacy; Annette Searfoss, executive committee president; Rose Snyder, senior director of education and operations; and Jen DeBell, executive director.
The event included the presentation of the following awards: Voice for Children Award - Jean C. Allison, Ph.D., associate professor of early childhood, Delaware County Community College; Voice for Children Award - Linda D. Grinage, founder and chief security officer, Blessed Assurance Christian Early Learning Center; Voice for Children Distinguished Career Honoree - Rebecca Lentz Gorton, administrator emerita, Northampton Community College; and Voice for Children Distinguished Career Honoree in memoriam - Rae Ann Hirsh, program director, Early Childhood Education
Department, Carlow University.
PennAEYC’s Voice for Children Award recognizes the grassroots leaders whose work impacts the quality of care for young children in diverse settings. The award celebrates not only the individual award recipients, but the early childhood profession.

Celebrating history and the river
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“Riverfest commemorates the involvement the river towns of Columbia and Wrightsville had in the Civil War,” said Sophia Vayansky, Columbia Crossing River Trails Center program coordinator. “It’s a really nice opportunity for us to connect to that larger, national story, but also connect to and feature local stories.”
Riverfest will be held from Friday, June 23, through Sunday, June 25. Activities will take place throughout Columbia, Wrightsville and Marietta, all with the goal of highlighting the 160th anniversary of the burning of the bridge over the Susquehanna River during the Civil War.
The weekend will be full of heritage walks, talks, trolley tours and more. “We have an architectural tour premiering this year, and that’s

During the pandemic, Robyn Black picked up a new hobby. She became a ham radio operator, talking to people around the country and the world. “It’s just fun,” she said, noting that her sister, Amanda Black, also earned a ham radio license. Now Robyn’s encouraging others to learn more about the hobby at the 2023 Summer Field Day.
The event will take place on the grounds of the Southern Pennsylvania Amateur Radio Club (SPARC), 1715 Breneman Road, Manheim. It will run from Saturday, June 24, through Sunday, June 25.
Robyn noted that events will be happening from noon on Saturday through noon on Sunday, but ham radio operators will be on-site all weekend long. “People sleep over,” she stated. “They stay for the whole time.”
The field day is designed to be a sort of open house for ham radio, with various stations set up to showcase different forms of communication. “We’ll have some guys with a station for CW, which is Morse code,” Robyn remarked. “We’ll have different stations, and you can get on the radio with a licensed operator. You may even be able to reach people in other countries.” A variety of food, including hamburgers and hot dogs, will be available during the event.
Ham radio allows users to talk with other people without the internet or cell service. “It’s designed to be an emergency media in case the electricity goes out or the grid goes down and there’s no other means of communication,” Robyn explained. “You don’t wish for an emergency

going to focus on all of the different styles of buildings you’ll find in Columbia,” Vayansky noted. Hosted by the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County, architectural tours will run all three days and will leave from the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St.
Also new this year, bus tours will be offered in Wrightsville, featuring actors portraying notable characters from the town’s Civil War history.
Additional tours will include paddling on the river, rides on the Chief Uncas river boat, an iron industryfocused tour and exploration of the Burning of the Bridge diorama in Wrightsville. A river recreation expo will be held at Columbia River Park from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 24, and a Riverfest music street fair will run from 1 to 6 p.m. on Saturday along Front Street in Marietta.
Most of the tours require preregistration, and early sign-up is encouraged, said Megan Salvatore, visitor services representative for Columbia Crossing. “Last year, we sold out of all of our heritage tours, so we made a huge effort to bulk it up and provide more activities this year,” she noted. “We added more activities for kids … to make it fun for the whole family.” Kids’ activities
will include Bucket Brigade Races with prizes on Saturday from 10:15 to 11 a.m. at Columbia River Park.
“There are so many things happening with Riverfest and so many things people have yet to discover in our river towns,” Salvatore stated. “We want to invite people to rediscover the area or discover it for the first time.”
Vayansky emphasized that although history is a big part of Riverfest, the weekend incorporates both education and fun. “We will be having music, paddle tours, kids’ activities and lots more,” she said. “Even though it’s all centered around commemorating a historic event, it’s also an opportunity to have some summertime fun.” For more information about Riverfest, including a complete schedule of events, visit https://riverfestpa.com.
to happen, but when it does, you’ve got to be prepared. Ham radio operators practice. We play on our radios to make sure they are up to snuff and they’re going to work when the need arises.”
For Robyn, ham radio has offered a way to make new friends. “I love talking to other people,” she noted, adding that she needs nine more states to reach people in all 50. She also participates with the Parks on the Air program, reaching out to operators in state parks across the country.
During the field day in Manheim, similar events will be happening throughout North America, with more than 40,000 temporary transmitting stations set up in public places to demonstrate how ham radio works. Field day has been organized by the American Radio Relay League since 1933.
Robyn hopes people will come to the Manheim field day to see ham radio firsthand and perhaps discover a new hobby. “Come for the fun. Come to witness the emergency practice and come for the conversation,” she said. “We want to encourage more people to try this hobby and keep it alive.”

School’s out for summer, and there’s plenty of fun to be found at Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) as the organization rolls out its summer programming.
“We have a ‘Summer Vibe’ theme this year,” said Travis Reish, director of student ministries. “We’ll have a beach week, shark week, a superheroes week, a Star Wars week.” Summer programming will kick off on Tuesday, June 20, and will run until Monday, Aug. 7.
Programs will be offered for children in grades one through five on Mondays and Fridays. Boys in grades six through 12 are invited for programs on Tuesdays, and programs for girls in grades six through 12 are offered on Wednesdays. On Thursdays, boys and
girls in grades six through 12 are invited to attend. All programs are held from 3 to 6 p.m. at REYS, 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy.
“We will be having special guests come in for our kids’ club, including ZooAmerica, who will do a presentation for families in July,” Reish stated. “Our teens will be going on outings as well, to ice cream parlors and local parks.” Special events, including a pool party, will also be held.
“Our summer programming is an opportunity to try and see if you like it,” said Hannah Wheeler, program and communications coordinator.
“You don’t have to attend every week, but you can try it out. Why not come and play games, hang out and meet new friends?” She underscored the need for many families to have places for children to go
over the summer. “A lot of parents still work during the summer, so it’s helpful for parents to know students are getting exposed to a positive influence while they’re at work,” she said.
Reish emphasized that the summer groups serve a purpose beyond just providing fun, with a mission to offer Christian programming in a welcoming space. “We want to be sure kids have a safe place to go this summer,” he said. “We want to offer a place to socialize, get a hot meal, play some games and also learn about Jesus as well.”
GEARS frompg 5
work on fundamentals of the game - passing, hitting and serving. Game play and competitions will also be included. Participants should wear sneakers. Kneepads are optional but recommended. A T-shirt is included in the fee.
Two tennis camps will be offered from June 26 to 29 and Monday to Thursday, July 10 to 13, at the tennis courts at EAHS.
REYS will wrap up its summer programming with a Kids’ Carnival on Aug. 7. Featuring games and prizes, the carnival will be open to participants in REYS programs as well as the general community.
REYS will also hold its free backpack giveaway again this year for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, with distribution set to begin on Thursday, Aug. 10. Each backpack will also include school supplies. Registration is now open for the backpacks at https://reys.org/events. The organization is also looking for donations of new backpacks.
Featuring:
•
Award Winning
(Violin & Piano), The Zimmerman Family
A Beginner Tennis Camp for children ages 4 to 6 will be held from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Participants will focus on learning and building tennis fundamentals with an emphasis on fun. The camp will focus on learning proper techniques, while cultivating a love of the sport through drills and games.
A Teen Tennis Camp will offer instruction from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for youths ages 13 to 17. Participants will develop and improve skills through conditioning, stroke development and strategy. The
camp is for current or aspiring high school tennis players.
Science of Superpowers, a Snapology class, for children ages 5 to 10, will offer an opportunity for students to explore gravity, aerodynamics, forces, motion and more as they learn about flight, super villain fights and superhero vehicles. The program will take place on June 26 to 29 from 9 a.m. to noon in the gym at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown.
A trip to the Finger Lakes Wine Fest will take place on Saturday, July 8, with departure at 6:30 a.m. from the EAHS parking lot. The festival features more than 90 New York state wineries, along with live music, wine seminars, food demonstrations and a gourmet food court. A wine pickup service will be available. Attendees must be age 21 and up and have a photo ID to participate.
Kids’ arts and crafts workshops set
The Winters Heritage House, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown, will host three summer arts and crafts workshops for children this summer. All classes have an age recommendation of 8 and up.
A Felted Soap Workshop will be held on Thursday, June 22, from 2 to 4 p.m., taught by Susan Wheelersburg. Felted soap is soap that is wrapped in colorful wool fibers.
During the workshop, attendees will use the wet felting technique, where the strands of wool fiber that surround the soap shrink and cling to the bar of soap as the artist soaks and rubs the fibers in soapy water.
A Sewing Workshop will take place on Wednesday, July 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. Attendees will create a small pillow with their own unique design, and they will explore sewing different shapes and stitches. This
workshop is for beginners, as well as those with experience. It will be taught by Teresa St. Angelo.
The museum will host a Weaving Workshop on Thursday, Aug. 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. Participants will use drinking straws along with the over, under, over technique to produce a bookmark or a bracelet, and beads will be available to customize the items.
There is a fee for each class, with a discount for siblings, museum members and those registering for all three classes. To register, stop by the museum or visit www.eliza bethtownhistory.org and click on Events. Anyone who wishes to register online but would like one of the discounts may call the museum at 717-367-4672. For more information, email teresa@elizabethtown history.org.

Magician to perform at Zion Lutheran
Over the past several months, members of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1290 River Road, Marietta, have been exploring various ways people can connect with God, others, and the world around them. On Sunday, June 25, members will focus on connecting with God through magic, beginning at 9 a.m. in the social hall. The gathering will include a magic show by Zion member Eric Vera.
Vera became fascinated with magic during his time in Sunday
school at Zion when another member, Scott Sullivan, shared magic one morning. Vera was amazed that ordinary people could learn these amazing feats and perform them directly in front of viewers. Using a magic set borrowed from his older brother, Matt, Eric began learning simple magic tricks. Over the years, his interest for magic has grown into an avid hobby.
