“All Together Now” for Summer Reading Sharing a love of chess
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
SummerReading is in full swing at the Elizabethtown Public Library, and you’re invited to sign up for the program.
“Our theme is ‘All Together Now,’” said Jennifer Miller, children’s librarian. “It’s thinking about cooperation, kindness, friendship and bringing everybody together.”
She noted that the program, which runs through Saturday, Aug. 12,has something for everyone from birth through age 19. “We have lots of opportunities for reading, crafts, art and story times,” she stated. “We have STEM activities as well.” There is also a Summer Reading Program for adults, she added.
Highlights of the Summer Reading Program include Touch a Truck programs on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month, when children will be able to explore different vehicles up close.
“We have magician Ran’D Shine coming,” Miller stated of the Tuesday, July 11, event. “He’s a nationally recognized magician. His shows are very interactive, with magic, music and storytelling.”
Critter Connections will visit the library on Wednesday, Aug. 9. “This will be a hands-on educational program where kids can take turns holding rabbits, guinea pigs and other critters,” Miller said. “They can learn about the animals and how to properly handle them.”
Kids who participate in the Summer Reading Program will be eligible for a variety of prizes, she noted. “Our sponsors are wonderful,” Miller said. “Penn Cinema is a new sponsor this year, and they are giving movie tickets to everyone in the 0 to 19 age bracket.” Other prizes include coupons for McDonald’s ice cream, tickets to the Lancaster Barnstormers and admission to a variety of local attractions, including Bounce Kraze, Tiny Town and Waters Edge Mini Golf.
Miller noted that while the goal of the Summer Reading Program is to promote literacy, it also serves another purpose.
“Fun is the No. 1 reason to participate,” she remarked. “It’s important to maintain those skills from the school year, because teachers work really hard, and we want to be sure kids don’t experience that summer slide, but it’s also about having fun. It’s a chance to see friends, maybe make some new friends and enjoy fun activities.”
Miller noted that the library is able to offer year-round programming thanks to the generous support of the community. “We are an independent library under the umbrella of the Library System of Lancaster County,” she stated. “Over 70% of our funding comes from private donations and the good will of our community.”
For more information on the Summer Reading Program, visit https://etownpubliclibrary.org or stop in at the library, 10 S. Market St.

Chess is a game that requires calculation, strategy and the ability to visualize several moves in the future. It’s also a game with lessons that can be applied beyond the board.
“I love chess because it’s a complex game that provides me with creative and strategic thinking that I can use in other parts of my life such as work and sports,” said Caleb Fuge, who will be a junior at Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) in the fall.
Caleb co-founded the school’s chess team this past year, and he currently serves as the club’s vice president. He’s excited to see the team grow, noting that it only formed halfway through this past year.
The son of Jonathan and Shelly Fuge of Elizabethtown, Caleb said chess has a special place in his heart because it’s something he shares with his great-grandfather John Haynes.
“I was taught by my greatgrandfather, Pop, with a chess set that I currently have now,” he stated, noting that he’s been playing chess for 10 years. Over the years, he’s enjoyed competing with his great-grandfather and bonding over the board.
When his great-grandfather turned 100 in May, Caleb and his family celebrated with a party at Pop’s nursing home in Indiana. “We played chess at his party,” Caleb shared of the celebration that was held in April. “I won.”

“Parables of Jesus” tells stories from the Bible
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“‘Parables of Jesus’ is a highenergy and humorous telling of the stories that Jesus told to His followers,” said Ashlee Heyward, team member, describing Piercing Word’s original production. “The piece gives the audience a fresh and everyday perspective of these stories told over 2,000 years ago, and we tell them word for word from the English Standard Version Bible. The Scripture is our script.”
“Parables of Jesus” will be
performed at the Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 30, and at 3 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 1.
The stories are told with an African inspiration. “The use of African-inspired instruments and movement helps remind viewers of how beautifully diverse the church is,” Heyward explained. “In a season where we are seeing so much division and brokenness in our country when it comes to issues of race, we have a unique opportunity to
celebrate and demonstrate our unity in Christ.”
The show will include stories of the sheep and shepherd, the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son, among others. “This show is both humorous and poignant and will leave you thinking deeply about the truths presented in a fresh way,” Heyward shared. “It’s a fun show that is perfect for the whole family.”
“Parables of Jesus” invites audience members to watch as Jesus helps His followers understand the nature of the Kingdom of God and the value of following Him. “‘Parables of Jesus’ is woven together flawlessly,” shared Jeff Gibelius, pastor of Second Presbyterian Church in Carlisle. “It has a fascinating African production style to it that encourages viewing familiar stories in a new light.”
Piercing Word is a nonprofit ministry based in Lancaster with a mission “to ignite passion for the Word of God in the heart of the church.” The organization has been per-
forming Scripture in dramatic and musical presentations, word-for-word from the Bible, since 2007.
All tickets for “Parables of Jesus” are pay-what-you-will and are availalbe by searching for the event on Eventbrite. Seating is limited, and early reservations are encouraged.
Donations will be received at the end of the performance at the exit doors. For more information on Piercing Word, visit https://piercingword.org.

Falcons banded in educational event
In collaboration with the biologists from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, all three of Harrisburg’s young peregrine falcons (eyasses) were fitted with identification bands.
Banding provides biologists the ability to identify a specific, individual bird. It also can provide information on where the bird was banded, how old it was at banding, and its sex. Each young falcon was banded,
weighed, and given a physical exam. All three had clear eyes and a clear throat, indicating they are free of trichomoniasis.
There are two males and one female. The males were banded 04/BZ and 23/CA, and the female was banded 05/BZ.

Mennonite Life posts book auction
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will hold its annual book auction on Friday, July 14, at 6:30 p.m. The event will take place in the Mennonite Life Community Room and will feature a collection of rare and used books that will be up for bids.
Among the available books this year are several volumes that relate to local history and culture, such as Menno Simons’ “Opera Omnia” in its original leather binding and “Van de Historien der Martelaren” (“Of the History of the Martyrs”) in its original vellum binding. “Opera Omnia” was written in 1681, and “Van de Historien der Martelaren” was published in 1722; both tomes were scribed in Dutch. Other books available to purchase will include “The Earth Is the Lord’s” by John L. Ruth, “Building on the Gospel Foundation” by Burdge and Horst and an 1849 edition of “Martyr’s Mirror” by Thieleman J. van Braght.
Bids may be placed online and by mail until Thursday, July 13, and the auction books will be displayed in Mennonite Life’s Collections Building in the weeks leading up to the event. For more information, visit https://mennonitelife .org/events.
Mennonite Life hosts three annual book auctions, a tradition that began over two decades ago. The organization’s
goals in holding the auctions include stories that span communities from around the world and encouraging the exchange of different cultures and histories. Although Mennonite Life was unable to hold as many auctions as usual during the COVID-19 pandemic, the auctions have returned to their regular schedule this year.
The organization acquires the books for the auction through a variety of sources. Book owners often consign their items to Mennonite Life in exchange for a percentage of the sale. Others donate books from their collections to benefit the organization, and books are frequently decommissioned from the Mennonite

Life Library to be sold in the auction.
“We tend to look for things that are Anabaptist-specific, but we have a wide variety of work,” said Kevin Bradford, Mennonite Life’s used book manager. “It’s incredible to touch and see history and how it impacts people.”
All of the funds raised from the auction benefit Mennonite Life and its mission to preserve history. In addition to the auction, the organization hosts a book fair every year in September. “It’s interesting to see which books people go crazy for,” Bradford said. “It’s a lot of fun to have the general public come out and enjoy seeing these books.”
