Senior Center Activities Encourage Camaraderie BY CATHY MOLITORIS

The Elizabethtown Area Senior Center at GEARS will host two special events this month for seniors. A Senior Business Expo will be held at the GEARS Community Center gym, 70 S. Poplar St., from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12.

Cruise Week will be held from Monday, July 18, through Friday, July 22. This is the first time the center has held a business expo, said Wayne Bream, senior center assistant. A senior himself, Bream came up with the idea after benefiting from community organizations See Senior Center pg 4

to see what worked and what didn’t.” The result of their efforts became MS FitEffect, a free, 10-week fitness program for people with MS. The next session will run from Saturday, Sept. 10, through Saturday, Nov. 19, at Elizabethtown Fitness Club, 626 S. Market St. “I did not set out to do this. It sort of found me,” Mark said. After his wife’s diagnosis, Mark changed

For some old-fashioned fun plus food and fellowship, make plans to attend the Ruhl’s United Methodist Church community picnic on Saturday, July 16. The event will take place at the church’s picnic grove, 2766 Newport Road, Manheim, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. “We’re doing a modified picnic this year,” said Gail Ruhl, a member of the picnic committee. In the past, the picnic included both lunch

careers from operating his own woodworking business to become a personal trainer. “I have always loved fitness, so I got my personal training certification, but I had no idea of how to work with people with MS,” he explained. Through trial and error with Jackie, Mark created a program that has helped people improve their balance and strength. The couple created MS FitEffect in 2016, and the effort became a nonprofit in September of 2020. “We teach strength, stamina and stability,” Mark stated. “Through persistent training, we have watched clients gain strength, stamina and live more productive lives. We have watched them move from wheelchairs and walkers to standing, first steps, skipping and even running.” The Muellers offer the program once a year, and classes are capped at 20 participants. Because it’s free, people may only participate in one 10-week session. “They get a gym membership, and they get one-onone training with an MS fitness and wellness certified trainer,” Mark said. “They get an exercise program

Picnic from pg 1 and dinner, as well as a day full of entertainment. The pandemic forced the church to cancel its picnic in 2019 and 2020. Last year’s event featured a drive-through pickup for homemade chicken corn soup, and this year, the committee is expanding the picnic to include lunch and kids’ activities. “The soup sale went fabulous last year, and we had a lot of new faces come through,” Ruhl noted. “We sold out by noontime.” Still, the congregation was eager to return to the picnic format that the church has held for more than 100 years, and the community was ready, too. “People were asking if

we’d bring back the lunch this year,” Ruhl said. “They missed it.” This year’s picnic will feature takeout chicken corn soup as well as a variety of lunch items, including hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, hot sausage sandwiches, desserts and beverages. The soup is the star of the show, Ruhl said, noting that volunteers will begin preparing more than 500 pounds of chicken on the Thursday before the picnic. “We’ll have a little more than 14 kettles of soup,” she remarked. Ruhl added that the committee is excited to bring back the picnic. “I know picnics might be a thing of the past for many people, but I believe there are still a lot of people

out there in the community who it’s people missed just being able to sit important to,” she stated. “There’s at the picnic tables and converse fellowship at the picnic. I think with people they only see once or twice a year. It’s about being together as a community.” Along with the picnic, Ruhl’s Church will host services in the grove on Sundays at 7 p.m. from in The Elizabethtown Public Library 10 South Market Street, Elizabethtown July 10 through Aug. 14. Each service will feature a different speaker 20% OFF All Doll Clothes and will be followed by an ice cream for the month of July social. Fitness from pg 1 that’s designed for them by a trainer.” He noted that the exercises are suitable to do in the gym or at home. Because MS affects everyone differently, programs are individualized, he explained. “This is for anybody at any age, at any stage,” he said. The goal of the program is to teach participants exercises they can continue on their own at home or at the gym after the session concludes. In the future, Mark would like to create a full online video library of exercises, which would be free to access, along with weekly podcasts or webinars with information on living with MS. Funding for MS FitEffect comes from community sponsors, including past participants. “About one-third of our sponsorships are from people who have gone through the program,” Mark said. “They want to pay it forward to someone else.” Mark emphasized that anyone with MS can benefit from his program. “We work on the mindbody connection,” he stated. “This is a program for everybody. So many people want a magic pill, and this is not about a magic pill. It’s about what a person is willing to put into it to help themselves. We work alongside them. We encourage them. If they put in the work, they will definitely see results.” For more information on MS FitEffect, visit www.msfit effect.org, email msfiteffect @gmail.com or call 717-682-7230.

Nation’s top standard in patient safety. Penn Medicine is proud to have all six of our hospitals, including Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health’s Lancaster General Hospital, awarded an “A” in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades. Because of our dedicated staff, Lancaster General Hospital has received an A grade every year since 2017. Making New Friends After 50

F085884

The early years of midlife are a and early 40s, many of them are bal- their 50s, some of those responsibilihectic time for many people. Around ancing the responsibilities of a career ties may be less significant, leaving the time people reach their late 30s and a family. But as people enter more time for recreational pursuits. Hobbies and other pursuits outside work are often more fun when enjoyed with friends. People over 50 likely recognize that it’s not always easy to make new friends, even though it’s beneficial to have supportive relationships in one’s golden years. A 2017 study from researchers at Michigan State University found that valuing friendships was a stronger predictor of health and happiness among older adults than valuing family. Making friends after 50 might not be as simple as it was during one’s school days, but the following strategies can help to build new friendships.

- Identify interests. Fifty-somethings who have spent the last couple of decades building a career and raising a family can give some serious thought to their interests outside of work or passions they hope to pursue now that they have more time to commit to such pursuits. The more interested a person is in a given activity, the more likely he or she is to stick with it and possibly meet likeminded individuals who may become friends. - Utilize social media. In years past, men and women over 50 may not have had readily available tools to reach out and connect with new people. Social media has made it easier to build such connections. Even the most obscure passions likely have a social media group of locals devoted to them, and these groups can be great ways to meet new people. A local runners’ club may have its own

social media accounts, and local governments and community groups often share information about sports leagues and other groups via social media. - Sign up for group outings. Communities often sponsor group outings to museums, theatrical productions, sporting events, and more. Signing up for a bus trip to a local museum presents a great opportunity to meet people who share one’s interests, providing the potential to build last-

ing friendships. - Broaden your horizons. Just because people are in their 50s does not mean their friends have to be. Friends come in all ages, so don’t hesitate to invite younger or older acquaintances and colleagues over for dinner or on weekend excursions. Making friends after 50 can be challenging. However, various strategies can help people in this age group to connect with new people.

Tips For Seniors To Lessen Their Financial Load By the time people reach their 50th birthday, many have begun to imagine what their life in retirement may look like. People may seek ways to reduce their financial load in anticipation of the day when they will no longer work. Cutting back need not be complicated, and the following are some simple ways for individuals to save money. - Address unsecured debt. Unsecured debt, which can include credit

card balances and medical bills, tends to carry higher interest rates than debts that carry a collateral requirement. According to the Federal Reserve, roughly 12.5% of individuals over 50 still have student loan debt, which is another type of unsecured debt. If possible, people over 50 should pay off these debts immediately or make their best effort to pay extra each month so the debts are paid off as soon as

possible. - Pay in cash. It’s not enough to simply pay off unsecured debt like consumer credit. It’s also important to stop accruing additional debt. Individuals over 50 should resist the temptation to use their credit cards, instead paying with cash or debit cards. Credit card debt is often characterized as a problem for young consumers, but a 2021 report from See Financial Load pg 7

Financial Load from pg 6 ValuePenguin found that the median credit card debt among individuals between the ages of 55 and 64 was higher than it was for consumers ages 35 to 44. Paying in cash, whether it’s with paper currency or a debit card, ensures you’re not digging yourself into debt. - Re-examine your housing situation. Adults 50 and over who purchased their home in their late 20s or early 30s are likely nearing the maturity date on their mortgages. If so, paying a little extra toward the principal each month will help to pay off the mortgage a good deal earlier than paying the same amount

you’ve been paying for years. Although paying extra money each month may not seem like reducing one’s financial load, it will do so considerably over time. For example, the financial experts at Wells Fargo note that individuals with a fixed-rate mortage loan of $200,000 at 4% can cut the term of that loan by more than four and a half years by paying as little as $100 extra each month toward their principal. Homeowners over 50 who have already paid off a significant percentage of their mortgage loans could bring these loans to maturity much sooner if they start paying more toward principal now.

Work out in the water. Exercising in the water can assist with movement and reduce strain on the body. The Arthritis Foundation says the water’s buoyancy supports body weight, which minimizes stress on joints and can alleviate pain. Water provides gentle resistance as well - up to 12 times the resistance of air. That means it’s possible to build strength and muscle even just by walking or swimming in a pool.

Physical activity is vital to overall health. The World Health Organization (WHO) says limiting time spent being idle and taking advantage of opportunities to get moving - even if it’s just a little bit of exercise - can go a long way toward improving overall health. In November 2020, the WHO released new exercise guidelines for people of all ages. Adults - including older adults and those with chronic conditions or disabilities - should get between 150 and 300 minutes a week of moderate to vigorous aerobic activity. However, individuals with limited mobility due to age or pre-existing medical conditions may wonder how they can meet these guidelines for exercise. Those with chronic pain or illness sometimes find that exercising for more than a few minutes can be challenging. Even brief periods of exercise can pay dividends, and there are various approaches people can take to work around mobility and other issues. Explore chair exercises. Just because you are seated doesn’t mean you can’t get a workout. Seated chair exercises can work various muscle groups. Seated arm
