en Hoenich noticed a problem. The Masonic Village at Elizabethtown resident knew people throughout the retirement community had old flags that should be retired, but they didn’t have easy access to a place to drop them off. “I thought it would be convenient to have a drop box somewhere in the village,” he said. He designed one, which now resides inside the entrance to the cultural center, and the response from other residents was overwhelming. “In just about six months to a year, I got well over 500 to 600 flags,” he recalled. As the flags were collecting, he thought it was the perfect opportunity to connect the project to the greater community. “We try to do things here that involve the community, and I thought this was a great way to show people, both the

community and residents, the proper way to retire a flag,” he stated. So Hoenich organized a traditional flag retirement ceremony on June 25 at Masonic Village, in the parking lot of the Brossman Ballroom. Hoenich, a retired Army sergeant, belongs to the Harrisburg Chapter 76 of the National Sojourners, a Masonic organization of military members that aims to foster appreciation of the American heritage of freedom. Members of the group, along with York Camp - Heroes of ’76, led the ceremony in full colonial uniform. “We had close to 100 people attend the ceremony,” Hoenich recalled, including a Marine in a wheelchair who had a chance to retire a Marine flag. “There was nothing more moving that seeing that,” Hoenich noted. Members of the community, including Elizabethtown Mayor Chuck Mummert and Mike Rowe, executive director of Masonic Village, also participated in the ceremony.
As the summer heats up, cool down at the Rissers Mennonite Church community picnic. “This year, we have a water theme, and we’re going to have a water slide,” said Arlene Heistand, chair of the social committee. The event will be held at the church, 8360 Elizabethtown Road, Elizabethtown, on Saturday, July 30, beginning at 4 p.m. The rain date is Saturday, Aug. 13. The picnic will also feature activities focused on creatures in the creek on-site as well as games involving water. A beef barbecue picnic meal will be served. Arlene noted that the church chose a verse from John 7 to represent the picnic’s theme. “Just as water is essential to our physical lives, Jesus offers living water for our spiritual lives,” she said.

The Rissers Mennonite Church community picnic will feature lots of activities for families.
The event’s theme complements efforts by the church to support the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), Arlene remarked. “They help communities around the world have access to clean water,” she explained. “We’ll be collecting donations for them.” The congregation has been following a giving calendar this year, featuring information and activities to highlight water usage and raise funds. A representative from MCC will be at the picnic to accept donations and promote the organization’s water ministry. The annual picnic is a way for the congregation to get to know people in the community, said pastor Daryl Heistand. “We also want to provide a safe place to gather and
enjoy the blessings God has provided,” he stated. Arlene emphasized that anyone in the community is invited to the picnic, whether they’ve attended before or they are coming for the first time. “We want to bless our neighborhood with food and fun,” she said. “It’s a chance to get to know other people and make some new friends. We want our neighborhood to know we are here as a church, a group of people who love Jesus and follow His call. We can offer prayer and spiritual help in time of need.” Picnic attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs and towels. Rissers Mennonite Church holds services on Sundays beginning at 9 a.m. with Sunday school for adults and children, followed by worship time at 10 a.m.
GEARS from pg 2 is no admission fee, but refreshments will be sold. There will be giveaways, as well. All children must be age 8 or older, and there is a strict weight limit of 225 pounds. Separate fees have been set
for GEARS members and for nonmembers. GEARS will host a doubles tennis tournament on Friday, Aug. 5, starting at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 6, starting at 8 a.m. at the tennis courts at Elizabethtown Area High School, 600 E. “People came forward and stood at the mic and said who they were retiring the flag on behalf of,” Hoenich explained. “In the end, we probably had close to 750 flags retired in total.” Vet 21 Salute Honor Guard from Lancaster demonstrated the proper way to fold a flag, gave honors with taps and gave a three-volley salute. “They were in full uniform,” Hoenich said. “I tried to bring in as many people and groups from the community
as I could.” Hoenich said his next goal is to raise funds for a permanent flag retirement site on the Masonic Village property, so ceremonies can be held regularly. “The ceremony is a way of honoring our flag and remembering why we’re all here,” he stated. “It’s an excellent opportunity to teach the younger ones - and some of the more mature ones as well - the reason we have a flag and what it means to our country.”

The nutrition vouchers can be exchanged for Pennsylvania grown fruits and vegetables through November at participating farmers’ markets and roadside stands. Each person is eligible to receive vouchers only once per year. An individual must be at least age 60, reside in Lancaster County, and have an annual household income of less than $25,142 for one person or less than $33,874 for two. Elizabeth Hughes Society Awards Scholarship
Provided as a community service by this civic minded publication and the Association of Community Publishers R081004
The Elizabeth Hughes Society recently presented the Women for Women Scholarship to Jocelyn Shaffer. The scholarship committee awarded Shaffer a $1,000 scholarship to continue her Associate of Science in Nursing. Shaffer grew up in Elizabethtown and still resides there with her two daughters. An employee of Cornwall Manor Health Center in Cornwall, she has worked in the health care field for 12 years, primarily doing activities with residents in nursing homes. She has a passion for helping those who have cognitive and physical disabilities to recreate and live the best lives they can. After she
worked through the pandemic, Shaffer’s desire to continue her education in health care grew. In 2021, she enrolled part time at Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences, with the goal of obtaining her Associate of Science in Nursing and registered nurse licensure. She is scheduled to graduate in 2024. After that, she would like to continue working in a nursing home and eventually earn a nursing home administrator license. The Women for Women Scholarship was established in memory of the late Elizabeth Hughes member Esther Winters. After learning that Winters returned to school as

A committee reviewed the applications, which included letters of recommendation and an essay by the applicant. The committee members - Maria McCall, Patsy Reed, Carol Hunter, Marsha Williams, Elaine Jackson, and scholarship chair Marilyn Muston selected the recipient. “This is going to be the party of the summer,” said Beth Ann Bradshaw, co-chair of the SLK Summer Bash to Support Kids with Rare Diseases. “It’s going to be a fun night for a great cause.” The Summer Bash will be held at Melhorn Manor, 977 W. Main St., Mount Joy, from 4 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 30. It will feature food, drinks, live music, games and more, all to benefit the SLK Foundation. “The foundation is named for the founder’s nephew, Sean Louis Kisielnicki, which is where the letters ‘SLK’ come from,” explained Brittany Garner, event co-chair. The foundation was created by Stephen Trott in 2016, when Trott began looking for ways to help his nephew, who was diagnosed with Hunter syndrome. Trott soon realized that other families needed help for their children with rare diseases as well, and the foundation was born. “Insurance pays for a lot when you have a sick child, but if you have a rare disease, it’s often harder to get funding through insurance,”
and to have fun. It’s casual dress, so come as you are.” The evening will feature a summer buffet menu by Chef Autry, a cash bar, cornhole and other yard games, live music from Bit-O-Blues and giveaway baskets. Items up for grabs will include jewelry, makeup, Barnstormers tickets, gas cards, car detailing and more. The event will be held both indoors and outside, Garner noted, with plenty of room for indoor-only activities if the weather does not cooperate. The event is sponsored by The Solar Girl. The foundation has set a fundraising goal of $10,000 for the Summer Bash, with proceeds benefiting families throughout central Pennsylvania. “There’s a tagline for the foundation which I really like that says, ‘A disease may be rare, but hope should not be,’” said Bradshaw. “That’s what this event is about - raising money to give these families hope.” For more information or to purchase tickets for the SLK Summer Bash, visit https:// tinyurl.com/y9sah7d5.
