Cornerstone Youth Center undergoes renovations

Thanksto a grant from the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown, Cornerstone Youth Center is getting a facelift. Work has been underway for several weeks at the organization, located at 95 S. Wilson Ave., Elizabethtown.

One of the projects has been moving the entrance to bring students into a bigger, more welcoming space, said Jim Bush, executive director. Renovations will include painting the foyer, installing cubbies and coat hooks where students may put their belongings and setting up a check-in and checkout station.

ExHaLTT Performing Arts Academy opens new location

Since the end of May, Jill Thomasson has been working hard to transform a space in Elizabethtown into a nonprofit center for the arts. ExHaLTT Performing Arts Academy will celebrate its new location at 18 N. Market St., Elizabethtown, with open houses

on Monday, Aug. 14, and Tuesday, Aug. 15, from 6 to 9 p.m. each evening.

“We will have light refreshments, and people will have the opportunity to meet and greet our board of directors,” Thomasson said. “We’ll have a testimonial video people can watch about what we do, and we’ll have The Dancer’s Pointe from

Painting is being completed by various community groups, including volunteers from Victory Church and from the Rotary Club.

“We have a lot more room when the kids come in this way,” Bush said. “It won’t be as congested as they check in, and they have a big space to just hang out until our programs start.”

The Rotary Club granted $5,000 to Cornerstone, with funds also set to cover the cost of renovations to the existing café on-site. Cornerstone held a series of focus groups as part of its five-year strategic plan, asking parents, volunteers, community members and students what they’d like to see from the organization.

“We spoke to students who attend Cornerstone regularly, and we also talked to those who don’t attend,” Bush said. “We asked them, ‘What is something we could do to

make Cornerstone more appealing to you?’ One of the things that kept coming up, especially among the girls, was a coffeehouse.”

Cornerstone currently serves food every day it’s open, including snacks, drinks and dinner, but Bush was inspired to transform the space next to the café into a coffeehouse. Three booths will be installed along the windows, with an additional large corner booth. Seating in the area will be replaced, surrounding a coffee table, and the room will be painted.

Chicken barbecue will benefit Hope Within Ministries

“We want this to be a space where kids can come in, talk, play games and have conversations, either amongst themselves or with our volunteers,” Bush noted, adding that the coffeehouse will offer a quieter alternative to the building’s game room, basketball court and skatepark.

Cornerstone currently provides after-school programming from 3 to 6 p.m. for middle-school students on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, as well as for high-school students

Picking up dinner on Saturday, Aug. 12, will help neighbors in need. Hope Within Ministries will hold a drive-through chicken barbecue from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of its office, 4748 E. Harrisburg Pike, Elizabethtown. Preorders must be made by Tuesday, Aug. 1.

The meal will feature a halfchicken from Nolt’s Chicken BBQ, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll, butter and a drink.

“Hope Within has held our chicken barbecue fundraisers annually since

2021, usually having one in the summer and another in the fall,” explained Audrie Zettick Schaller, director of development. “They are popular because donors can help support our work by doing something they already do - eat. Also, when you purchase tickets online, you have an option of picking up the meal for yourself or donating it toward the benefit of one of our client families.”

fee that starts as low as $5 per session,” Zettick Schaller said. “We are able to provide these services via the generosity of 32-plus volunteers, licensed medical and dental providers, therapists and nurses who are with us on their days off. But supporting

their work requires us to rely on donations. These donations might help with getting medically necessary supplies, access to medical records management software or any variety of other operational expenses. This is particularly true of our dental area of practice, where one visit might cost us upwards of $250 for consumable supplies for each patient.”

She noted that the need is great in the community, adding that Hope Within went from 616 medical visits in 2019 to more than 1,700 in 2022, along with 288 dental visits and 426 counseling appointments. The organization is on track to exceed those numbers in 2023.

Zettick Schaller encouraged people to order a barbecue dinner, noting that it will make a difference in the community.

“Getting a meal helps your neighbors - the hard-working people who are single moms, delivery drivers, child care

workers, waitstaff and more,” she said. “Statistics show that 27% of Pennsylvanians who work still struggle to survive in today’s world. ... With rising prices, these families are making tough decisions. Do I get the car fixed so I can get to work and put food on the table, or do I pay a monthly health insurance premium? These are the people Hope Within helps, filling the gap until they can get a permanent medical home.”

Chocolate Tour will raise funds for cancer research

On Saturday, Aug. 5, the 13th annual Donegal Insurance Chocolate Tour will kick off from the Manheim Farm Show Complex, 502 E. Adele Ave. It will feature six bike routes, ranging from 10 miles to 100 miles, with participants rolling out between 7 and 8:30 a.m. A 2-mile fun walk will begin at 9 a.m. Proceeds from the tour will benefit cancer research.

“The routes wander through the scenic southcentral Pennsylvania countryside that highlight the beauty of the area, the history of farming and the tradition of chocolate that the area is well known for,” said Will Stone, Chocolate Tour committee member. “The longer routes inevitably take the cyclists through covered bridges. All routes have full support, including rest stops and mechanical support.”

The fun walk is dogfriendly and will take participants through the covered bridge at the Farm Show complex and along the Chiques Creek trail, explained Cheryl Gamber, Chocolate Tour committee member. She noted that chocolate treats will be offered along the trail, and ice cream will be provided f or all at the end of the route, including pup cups for canine participants.

“The Chocolate Tour is a family-friendly event,” Gamber said. “Cycling and walk participants are treated to

lunch, hydrating beverages, Kreider’s ice cream, a (giveaway drawing) and, of course, lots of chocolate,” she stated.

Throughout its 13-year history, the Chocolate Tour has provided seed money for initial research projects that have led to larger cancer research grant awards for the Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Cancer Institute, she shared. “Currently, $2 million in cancer research grants are active at the College of Medicine as a result of Chocolate Tour funds,” Gamber said.

Some of the bike rides are dedicated to cyclists who

have passed away from cancer in the past year, she remarked, noting that the 100-mile ride is dedicated to Jim Wilson of Hummelstown, while the 50-mile ride is dedicated to Rich Snively of Lititz. The 35mile ride is dedicated to Glenn Curtis of Bernville, and the 25-mile ride is dedicated to Bernhard Robertson of Johns Creek, Ga. The 10-mile ride is dedicated to John Richie of Hummelstown.

Stone emphasized that people can support the Chocolate Tour even if they cannot attend in person on Aug. 5. “Join us virtually by signing up, picking your

favorite route and riding anytime between Aug. 6 and Aug. 8, and enjoy the scenery,” he said. “Please post any ride pictures on social media, and don’t forget to use #23choctour.”

Vendors will also be onsite during the Chocolate Tour, including Penn State Department of Dermatology, Excel Physical Therapy, HQ W ater Solutions and Hush Money Bikes. 2023 Chocolate Tour sponsors include Donegal Insurance Group, Cargill, PSECU and Northwest Bank.

For more information, to register or to donate, visit www.bikesignup.com/Race/ Pa/Manheim/ChocolateTour.
