That’s A Wrap On The Pinnacle Cup BY CATHY MOLITORIS
About 25 years ago, Dale Treese had an idea. He wanted to develop a match-play charity golf tournament that would benefit local organizations. Thanks to his dedication, the Pinnacle Cup marked its 21st year in June. Now Treese is retiring from the tournament that has raised funds for Camp Ladybug at GEARS in Elizabethtown for years. “This tournament has meant an awful lot to me,” he stated. “It’s been very satisfying to have an event that’s been successful enough to raise funds for worthwhile causes. Working on this tournament has really become a big part of my life.” Treese is stepping down to spend more time with his family, noting that organizing the tournament can be very time-consuming. He’s had a few people inquire about taking the reins, but he’s still weighing those options. Treese noted that when he started his dental practice in

Catch “Cats” On Stage ike Kohler has been busy watching his cat, Jaspurr. He’s doing research to nail the part of Old Deuteronomy in Susquehanna Stage’s upcoming production of “Cats.” “I’ve been observing my boy even more than usual, to catch his reactions and the way he moves,” Kohler explained. He noted that most of the cast members have pet cats, and they are all doing their own at-home surveillance. “Being a cat lover makes this job easier, because

we’re really interested in these characters,” he stated. “Cats” will be performed on select dates from Friday, July 29, through Sunday, Aug. 7, at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta. Based on “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by T.S. Eliot, the Tony Award-winning musical features songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber. “The show is about a bunch of cats living their lives, trying not to get caught up in the human world,” said Karey Getz, who plays Grizabella. “Grizabella is an outcast. She used to be in, and she wants back in. She’s lived a
hard life, and she just wants to get back in with her friends.” Getz said playing Grizabella is a dream come true, especially getting the chance to sing “Memory,” her character’s standout number. “I’ve been singing this song in my bedroom since age 7,” she said. She has two cats, Cheddar and Asparagus, and she modeled some of her character’s behavior on her elderly cat Nuke, who passed away. Jill Gagliano, who is directing and choreographing the show, said helping the cast get into character has been a unique experience. “This is a high-energy show
with a lot of dancing in a variety of styles,” she stated. “Choreographing jazz or tap for a cat has been a fun challenge.” Gagliano is the owner of two cats, Spartacus and Malcolm, the latter of whom often accompanied his human mom to rehearsals. While many productions of “Cats” are set in a junkyard or city scene, Gagliano chose a different approach. “We’re setting ours locally at the river. You’ll see the Columbia-Wrightsville bridge on stage,” she said, adding that she walked the Northwest River Trail for inspiration.

Nickel, who has three black cats - Billie Jean, Betty and Randi - said “Cats” was the first show she ever saw on Broadway, and she’s excited to be a part of the production. “This show has a huge ensemble, so you get to see so much talent on stage, which is unique,” she stated. “The musical numbers are everything from super joyful to heartbreaking. The production features a cast of 26, ranging in age from 14 to over 60, and since most of the characters are on stage for the majority of the show, staying in character as a cat has been challenging at times, said Chrissy Nickel, who portrays Demeter. “We’re working hard not to fall out of character in the quieter moments,” she said, noting that cast members can be seen stretching, hissing, playing with their tails or exhibiting other feline behavior throughout the show.

family put their heart and soul into this tournament, and Dale has a passion for the unique format he devised,” Acker stated. “His love for competitive golf and the Elizabethtown community has always been so evident.” Stan Daubert has been supporting the tournament as a volunteer for six years. “When I found out this was the last year for it, I was emotionally affected,” he said. “I thought about all the hard work that Dale has put into this all these years. I realized how deeply important this was to him and how much his heart was in this. I know it’s been a difficult decision for him to step away.” Treese has given so much of his time and financial support to the tournament over the years, Daubert noted. “Dale is just really selfless in this endeavor,” he stated. “He really cares about helping others.”

For many years, the Pinnacle Cup has been a main sponsor of Camp Ladybug, a free or low-cost, six-week camp for people with special needs, said Karen Eberly, senior program coordinator for GEARS. “We have been able to offer a much higher level of special events for our campers because of their donation to the camp,” Eberly commented, adding that campers take one main field trip annually and participate in activities focused on the camp’s theme. This year’s camp ran from June 13 through July 22. “Dr. Treese’s commitment and dedication to Camp Ladybug has been invaluable,” Eberly

The 22nd annual Amos Herr Honey Run will return on Saturday, Aug. 27, to Amos Herr Park on Nissley Road in Landisville. The event will feature two runs: the 5K Honey Run at 8 a.m. and the kids’ run at 9:30 a.m. This will be the second Honey Run held at the park since the COVID-19 pandemic, and local residents are eager to participate in the decades-old tradition. Previously held in the evening, the run will now begin in the morning to avoid unfavorable weather conditions. Awards will be given for first, second and third places in each age group, divided into age 14 and under, 15 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69 and 70 and up. Each runner will receive an award for participation for both the 5K and the kids’
Belongs campaign. The Everyone Belongs fund acts as a type of scholarship for those who require financial assistance with rec center programs and membership, ranging from a variety of adult fitness classes and sports leagues to several youth courses. Funds will also be used to benefit restoration projects at the Herr Homestead in Landisville. Separate registration fees have been set for the 5K and the kids’ fun run. To register ahead of time for either race, search “Honey Run” at www.Active.com. Same-day registration will also be accepted. The Honey Run is one of many events coordinated by the Hempfield recCenter. Summer activities on the center’s agenda include a community movie night on Friday,

The Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) requires that all commercial and residential customers transporting waste to any of its facilities use a tarp to secure open loads. LCSWMA will now charge a monetary penalty for those who do not follow this protocol, and second offenders will be turned away. LCSWMA officials noted that according to Pennsylvania’s state and federal requirements, it is the law to tarp loads. The relevant Pennsylvania law states, “Loads must be covered with a securely fastened water-resistant cover that eliminates potential for littering and other nuisances.” Tarping is also part of the Lancaster County Municipal Waste Management Plan. Facility operators and owners such as LCSWMA are responsible for knowing and complying with all relevant laws, regulations, authorizations and permits to help avoid the environmental impacts and public health, safety and welfare issues associated with the transportation of solid waste. When transporting any waste, objects or materials in an open trailer or vehicle, drivers should tie large objects directly to the vehicle or trailer, never overload the vehicle, check for possibilities of shifting and securely place a water-resistant tarp over the entire open load.
