Half a century ago, a small agricultural fair began in Elizabethtown. It was held in two tents on the campus of Elizabethtown College. This year, the Elizabethtown Fair marks its 50th anniversary, and the fair promises to be bigger and better than ever, said Sally Nolt, fair secretary. The fair will be held from Monday, Aug. 21, through Saturday, Aug. 26, at 900 E. High St., Elizabethtown.
“ We have a lot of new things this year, including racing pigs and goats,” she stated. “We’re having the Air Methods helicopter do a fly-in on Friday.” People will have the chance to see the Air Methods/WellFlight helicopter up-close and enjoy a meet-and-greet with staff members of the aircraft, which provides tools, supplies and ICU-level medical care.
To highlight the fair’s long history, a committee is putting together

“This is a day of family fun for everyone,” said Dana Myers, director of charitable giving for Brittany’s Hope, describing Biking for Brittany and the Walk of Love. The joint event
will be held on Sunday, Sept. 10, at Star Barn Village, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown.
The bike ride will feature a 31-mile course and a 62-mile course and will have a rolling start between 7 and 9 a.m. “For the cyclist in your
signs that will be displayed throughout the fairgrounds, and an interactive history hunt will also be held during the week.
“ We added two contests this year, a baby race and a rebar metalworking contest,” Nolt stated. “Last year, we added a woodworking contest, and we’ll be doing that again this year as well.”
In addition to live entertainment on two main stages, the fair will feature pop-up tents of entertainment each evening, and new food options will also be available. “We have really great food,” Nolt remarked. “We have people who come every night just to eat.”
Additional highlights of the week will include agricultural education presentations daily, a fair queen contest on Monday, a talent show on Tuesday and Senior Citizens Day on Wednesday. Various agricultural competitions will be held during the week, and a variety of competitive exhibits, ranging from
flowers to needlepoint, will be displayed inside Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, adjacent to the fairgrounds. A store selling 50th anniversary fair merchandise will also be set up on the fairgrounds.
Nolt credits the fair’s longevity to the support the event receives from the community. “We have between 300 and 400 volunteers who make the fair happen,” she said. “We have almost 100 people who help out in the animal petting area alone. We have a lot of people who help at the church. We have senior citizens who man the office during the week. We’re very fortunate.”
She encourages everyone to come out for the fair, noting, “We are an agricultural fair, but we offer something for everyone from babies to senior citizens.”

The faces of the kids who come to the Tools 4 School giveaway say it all, said Suzette McCarty, who is organizing the event. “You can see how much the kids - and the parents - appreciate it,” she noted about the backpack and school supply giveaway at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Marietta. “School supplies are so expensive, and when you have a family with three, four or five kids, it really hits them hard.”
The church, located at 1290 River Road, Marietta, will hold its annual Tools 4 School giveaway on Saturday, Aug. 12, from 9 to 11 a.m. “Kids can come in and pick out a backpack, and we have different colors, different sizes,” McCarty noted. “Then we have school supplies, and they can go down the line to fill their backpack. We have pocket folders,
tablets, colored pencils, crayons, markers, pencils, pens, rulers, erasers.” Children may also browse used books and take a book home for free.
This is the church’s 15th year for the giveaway, which is always well-received by the community, McCarty said. She estimates that about 120 children received backpacks and school supplies last year.
“We want to be sure everyone has the tools they need to succeed in school,” McCarty remarked. “This is a great opportunity to help your children get ready for school.”
There is no registration for the giveaway, she noted, adding that people can just show up on the day of the event. Supplies and backpacks are donated by congregation members, as well as community members and organizations.
Zion’s fraternal insurance agency, Thrivent, provides financial assistance to purchase
supplies as well.
Tools 4 School is one of the main ministry programs at Zion. The other program is Prime Time, held at noon on the first Tuesday of the month. Open to adults in the congregation and the community, the program provides lunch followed by bingo with prizes.
Both Prime Time and Tools 4 School allow the church members to play an active role in Marietta. “It’s important for us to reach out and connect with our community,” McCarty said.
Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church holds worship services at 10:15 a.m. on Sundays. For more information, visit www.zionmarietta.org.

“You’ll see a variety of friends you might have heard on the Kids Cookie Break,” explained Stacey Gagne, vice president of operations for WJTL FM 90.3, referencing the kid-friendly radio program. “It’s like we’re bringing all of the fun of the Kids Cookie Break to a free event for families.”
Two outdoor stages will feature performances and programs by Phredd, Steven Courtney, First Capital Drumline, Jared Erb, Cissy and The Man, Marian & Friends Ventriloquist, Jesse Rothacker and Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, This Way Up and Ryan & Friends.
“ We will also have a bounce house, covered wagon rides, Spooky Nook Gymnastics, barrel train rides, chalk art, interactive vendor tents and carnival games,” Gagne noted.
This is the 11th year for the Kids Cookie Break Fest. Each year, the event supports an organization in the community by encouraging participants to donate specific items with
admission.
“This year, we are inviting everyone who attends to donate art supplies to the School District of Lancaster,” Gagne explained. “Specifically, we are asking for art paper, paintbrushes and Sharpies.”
People will have the opportunity to purchase a Chick-filA box lunch to enjoy on-site, with proceeds helping to offset the cost of the event.
“People are also welcome to bring their own picnic lunch if they want to,” Gagne remarked.
She noted that the fest relies on volunteers as well as sponsors to operate. Sponsors of this year’s Kids Cookie Break Fest include Sight & Sound Theatres, STRAY Pro-
duction Services, Weaver’s Garage, Upward Broadband, Align Life Ministries, Casey Jones’ Restaurant at Paradise Station, Spooky Nook Sports, Chick-fil-A, The Bull Guys, Blessings of Hope and Herr’s.
The Kids Cookie Break Fest not only provides an opportunity to showcase performers from the radio program but also offers a fun family day out, Gagne said.
“ We want to provide an event that is free for families,” she stated. “It’s an opportunity to enjoy time together, have fun as a family and to connect with us at WJTL.”
To reserve tickets for the Kids Cookie Break Fest, visit www.thejunctioncenter.com/ events. Information on pur-
chasing Chick-fil-A lunches is available on the order form or lunches may be purchased by calling 717-459-3701. Tickets f or the lunch must be purchased by Friday, Aug. 11.

group, we have Biking for Brittany - a metric century and metric half-century bike ride - which are simply beautiful routes, right along the Northwest River Trail,” Myers shared. “We have wonderful volunteers from KW Realty and Elizabethtown College who are handling all the rest stops and plenty of volunteer professional bike mechanics.” All types of bikes are welcome for the ride, from e-bikes to race bikes.
Registration and check-in for the Walk of Love will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon, with festivities running until 3 p.m. “The Walk of Love is a day of fun to celebrate children and adoption, with live music from Steven Courtney and the Suitcase Musicians, games, face painting and, of course, a Kids’ Fun Run and Mile Walk.”
In addition to the in-person ride and walk, Brittany’s Hope will offer a virtual event for families, service groups or

people who cannot participate on Sept. 10 but still want to support the organization.
Proceeds from Biking for Brittany and the Walk of Love will raise funds to support the mission of Brittany’s Hope, aiding orphaned and at-risk children worldwide.
Participants will have the option to bring a picnic lunch or purchase refreshments from food trucks on-site, and self-guided tours of the Star Barn property will be available.
“If you’re looking for an opportunity to see the property and enjoy a picnic lunch, here’s your chance,” Myers stated. “In addition to the fun you’ll be having, you’ll be supporting orphaned and at-risk children and helping to unite children with families who have the heart to adopt a child with special needs.”

Conteh, a defender, was named to the First Team. Conteh concludes the trio of allconference picks that moved from the Second Team in 2022 to the First Team in 2023. The senior had a career year for the nationally ranked Golden Bears. In 17 games (all starts), Conteh caused a teamhigh 23 turnovers, won 57 draw controls and collected 39 ground balls. Conteh also had one goal on the year. Over the course of her 51-game career, Conteh has compiled 130 draw controls (fourth in program history), 47 caused turnovers and 88 ground balls. She spent her first two seasons as an offensive midfielder, registering 26 goals and 30 points, before transitioning to defense under current head coach Kristen Nicholson in 2022.
The six All-PSAC Eastern Division selections are the most for Kutztown since the program regained varsity status in 2008 and second-most all-time to a record eight picks in 1982. Kutztown’s four First Team selections were secondmost in the conference behind unbeaten and top-ranked West Chester’s five. The Golden Bears were also second to West Chester in overall allconference honorees.

Artists invited to submit postcards for exhibit
Create Columbia will present its third Invitational Postcard Art Exhibit. Artists from around the world are invited to mail their original art postcard for inclusion in the exhibit. Entries will be used as a fundraiser for Create Columbia.
Several guidelines have been created for submissions. A postcard-size artwork or two should be created using any medium, such as painting, collage, illustration, photography, or mixed media. Postcards must be sent via postal service (as a postcard) and should not be contained within an envelope. This year’s suggested theme is “It’s About Time.” Artists need not include a return address on their postcard art, but Create Columbia suggests that artists add their website address, as visitors to the exhibit may wish to see more of the artist’s creations.
Postcard art submissions should be mailed to CC Postcard Art 2023, P.O. Box 328, Columbia, PA 17512. The submission deadline is Thursday, Aug. 24.
The entries will be exhibited at the National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, from Saturday, Aug. 26, to Saturday, Sept. 2. The museum’s business hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
All displayed entries will available for bid via a silent auction throughout the exhibition period. The closing reception and announcement of winning bids will be held at the museum on Sept. 2, beginning at 2 p.m. Bidding will close promptly at 4 p.m.
Income derived from winning bids will go toward continuing operating costs of Create Columbia, a 501(c)(3) organization. No postcard art will be returned, and the artworks may be included in future fundraising efforts by Create Columbia.
