Funding Clean Water Projects BY CATHY MOLITORIS

“Clean water is a community issue,” said Allyson Gibson, director of strategic partnerships and programs for Lancaster Clean Water Partners. “It affects public health with drinking water. It can affect real estate values, and it plays a big part in our entire quality of life.” Gibson’s efforts to provide clean water just got a big boost. The Lancaster County Board of Commissioners presented a check for $3.4 million to the Lancaster County Conservation District and Lancaster Clean Water Partners to fund 11 clean water projects throughout the county. The funding represents the largest single investment in clean water in Lancaster County government history. The check was presented at the Conewago Recreation Trail in Elizabethtown. The site was specifically chosen, Gibson said, to highlight the three-phase, multi-municipal Conewago Creek Floodplain Restoration Project. “There are many partners

Food is a highlight of the Elizabethtown Fair.

A Fun Time At The Fair e provide something for all ages - babies up through senior citizens,” said Sally Nolt, describing the Elizabethtown Fair. The 2022 Elizabethtown Fair will run from Monday, Aug. 22, through Saturday, Aug. 27, at the fairgrounds, 900 E. High St. “We have a lot of new entertainment this year,” said Nolt, fair secretary. “Pentagon is back after an absence, and the LUV GODS are new this year.” Other new acts include Ironwood Drive Band, which performs bluegrass; The Sounds of Charlie Lee; and the Dave

Khristyn Maurer will offer a story time and crafts for children at 10:30 a.m. in the petting zoo area. Also new this year will be an aquaponics display, entertainment from one-man sideshow Dave Darwin, country line dancing with DJ Chicken Nugget, country music from Corina Rose, a 2-by-4 woodworking competition and an obstacle course for children. “We also have lots of good food,” Nolt noted. “We are a free (admission) fair, and we have people who come every night just to eat dinner.” Popular food items include Harvey’s Main Street BBQ, pretzel sandwiches and Grange milkshakes. “We have a lot of local church and

civic groups who sell food, and that is their main fundraiser for the year,” Nolt said. “The money they make gets funneled right back into the community.” The fair truly offers something for everyone, Nolt commented. “We are an agricultural fair, so we have lots of animals, and we also have great competitive exhibits in the church (next to the fairgrounds),” she stated. “Local businesses have the opportunity to showcase what they do in the exhibit area. There is so much to see and do.” For more information on the Elizabethtown Fair, including a complete schedule of events, visit www.etownfair.com.

involved in the restoration project,” Gibson noted. The Conewago Creek Floodplain Restoration Project includes the implementation of stream restoration, legacy sediment removal, floodplain reconnection and wetland creation that will lead to significant improvements to water quality, promote enhanced ecosystem resiliency and support Lancaster’s pollutant reduction goals, she noted. In addition to the Conewago Creek project, other projects that will be funded by the investment include waste minimization upgrades to several farms located near streams, several stream improvement projects, urban tree planting and the installation of eight continuous monitor units on streams around the county. Gibson noted that the restoration project at the Conewago Creek runs parallel to the Conewago Recreation Trail, a popular spot for walking, running, biking, horseback riding and crosscountry skiing. As the project

progresses, people will be able to see firsthand the importance of clean water efforts, she noted. “Clean water access affects how people enjoy recreation,” Gibson stated. “People want to feel safe when they go outside and when they enjoy parks and other recreation areas.” She noted that clean water also has an economic impact on everyone. “If the water in our creeks and streams is really dirty, it’s going to cost us more to treat it so we can drink it, swim in it or enjoy it,” she said. As the clean water projects get underway in the county, Gibson encourages everyone to do his or her part to promote the initiative. “Find out what watershed you live in, and learn what you can do to help,” she stated, adding that a good place to start is www.lancasterwatersheds.org. “Plant a tree. Go explore a Lancaster Conservancy preserve. Learn how to work with your neighbors to make clean water accessible to everyone.”

Prepare to get your feet wet - literally - when Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance hosts a creek stomp on Tuesday, Aug. 16. The event will be held at the covered bridge in Memorial Park, Manheim, near the Farm Show complex off East Adele Avenue. It will begin at 6 p.m. “ Watershed specialists from the Lancaster County Conservation District will be leading participants into the Chiques Creek to look for and collect macroinvertebrates,” explained Steve Gergely, president of Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance, adding that participants will then gather at the pavilion to discuss what’s been collected. “The specialists help to identify the species and discuss what those species mean in terms of relative stream health. For a day of fun family entertainment, head to the Kids Cookie Break Fest. The event will be held at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, on Saturday, Aug. 27. Two sessions will be held; each will feature the same lineup. Sessions will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 to 5 p.m. Tickets are free and will be available for the fest starting on Monday, Aug. 15, by calling 717-459-3701 or visiting w w w. t h e j u n c t i o n c e n t e r productions.com. “We’re celebrating our 10th year of the Kids Cookie Break Fest,” said Stacey Gagne, vice president of operations for WJTL FM 90.3, which is presenting the event. “We’ll have lots of entertainment on two outdoor stages.” The lineup will feature performances by Slugs & Bugs, Phredd, First Capital Drumline, The DKers, This Way Up, Jesse Rothacker and Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, Marian & Friends, Cissy and The Man and Bruce Fite. “We’ll also have lots of family-friendly activities,” Gagne noted, adding that activities will include bounce houses, covered wagon rides, barrel train rides, chalk art and carnival games. Also represented will be Spooky Nook Gymnastics, Snapology and The Balunguy. Interactive vendor tents will also be set up at the festival. “Businesses, schools or other organizations will have tables with something fun to do while they present information about who they are and what they have to offer,” Gagne stated. “Our vendors tend to get very creative with the games and prizes they give away.” People who come to the Kids Cookie Break Fest are invited to bring items to benefit Align Life Ministries, Gagne said. “We’re asking for donations of diapers in size 4, 5 or 6; Pull-Ups; baby wipes; or $10 baby-themed gift cards to Walmart,” she explained. Although the festival is free to attend, ticket holders will have the option to reserve a Chick-fil-A meal for a fee at the time of ordering tickets, and a variety of food trucks will be on-site selling food for purchase. “People are also welcome to bring their own picnic lunches as well if they’d like to,” Gagne said.

The Kids Cookie Break Fest will feature lots of family fun.

She noted that the Kids Cookie Break Fest is a way for WJTL to promote its mission and connect with the public. “Our slogan is ‘Christ. Community. Music,’” Gagne remarked. “The community piece is a huge part of who we are. We love to see kids and their families coming out and celebrating together. The festival is a great opportunity to get people of all ages here on-site to learn more about WJTL and Kids Cookie Break.” Kids Cookie Break is a Saturday morning program on WJTL hosted by Lisa Landis. “It features music specifically geared toward kids,” Gagne stated, adding that the program also includes educational field trips and live events. “Lisa likes to do a lot of fun, interactive things to get kids involved.” Gagne noted that volunteer opportunities are available for anyone who would like to help with the Kids Cookie Break Fest. For more information on volunteering, email Gagne at stacey@wjtl.com.

Phone and Internet Discounts Available to CenturyLink Customers The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission designated CenturyLink as an Eligible Telecommunications Carrier within its service area for universal service purposes. CenturyLink’s basic local service rates for residential voice lines are $22.50 per month and business services are $32.00 per month. Specific rates will be provided upon request. CenturyLink participates in the Lifeline program, which makes residential telephone or qualifying broadband service more affordable to eligible lowincome individuals and families. Eligible customers may qualify for Lifeline discounts of $5.25/month for voice or bundled voice service or $9.25/month for qualifying broadband or broadband bundles. Residents who live on federally recognized Tribal Lands may qualify for additional Tribal benefits if they participate in certain additional federal eligibility programs. The Lifeline discount is available for only one telephone or qualifying broadband service per household, which can be either a wireline or wireless service. Broadband speeds must be at least 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload to qualify. CenturyLink also participates in the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which provides eligible households with a discount on broadband service. The ACP provides a discount of up to $30 per month toward broadband service for eligible households and up to $75 per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands. For both programs, a household is defined as any individual or group of individuals who live together at the same address and share income and expenses. Services are not transferable, and only eligible consumers may enroll in these programs. Consumers who willfully make false statements to obtain these discounts can be punished by fine or imprisonment and can be barred from these programs. If you live in a CenturyLink service area, visit https://www.centurylink.com/aboutus/community/ community-development/lifeline.html for additional information about applying for these programs or call 1-800-201-4099 with questions.
