The Lions Club holds bingo to raise money for the Elizabethtown community, particularly people with vision and hearing loss. “We
also hold bingo to get to know the members of our community better and raise awareness of who we are and what we do,” said bingo chair Dave Longenecker.

adoption, foster care, counseling and family life education programs. Motivated by faith, COBYS works closely and cooperates with state and local social agencies to provide the best possible outcome for each individual case.
“Any child may end up in foster care; it doesn’t really discriminate,” said Stokes. “They can come from any place. Perhaps their family has been in poverty. Maybe their parents or grandparents have alcohol or other substance abuse issues. Sometimes kids are left to raise themselves. These kids may be in foster care for a few months until their moms and dads can take them back. The goal is to return children to their biological families, if possible.”
According to the 2022 State of Welfare report by the Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children, close to 500 children were in foster care in Lancaster County in 2021, and more than 20,000 kids in Pennsylvania received foster care during that same time frame.
“We receive a good portion of our funding from the state and county, but because of the high level of care that we provide, it doesn’t cover all the things we do,” said Stokes. “We empower adults and children to reach their full potential. When they come to us, they’re at a really tough spot in their lives. Our work is to make sure their lives are enriched as much as possible. It’s a challenge that we continue to look to meet.”
COBYS is staffed by over 100 employees, about 10 of whom are licensed therapists.
Bus trip to offer singing opportunity
The Darla Bair Singers of Lancaster have again been invited to open for the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. A one-day bus trip will offer community members the opportunity to travel with the group to New York City on Saturday, Nov. 25. Singers attending the bus
trip will gather with the Darla Bair Singers on the Radio City stage that afternoon to perform before the 4 p.m. show. For more information, community members may attend a meet-and-greet via Zoom on Wednesday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. For more details and the Zoom link, visit www.darlabair.com.
Bus trip to museum scheduled
The Maytown Historical Society will sponsor a bus trip to the Hagley Museum on Wednesday, Sept. 20. The Elite Coach bus will leave Fuhrman Park, 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta, at 8:30 a.m.
The first stop will be the Chester County History Museum. Next will be a three-course lunch at the 1817 Buckley Tavern in Centreville, Del.
“Foster parents are definitely our greatest need right now,” said Stokes. “We need people to say yes to taking an older child into their home. They have to be licensed to be foster parents, and we provide traumafocused training. It’s not an easy thing to do, but it’s the future of a child. It’s a big challenge and a big reward.”
COBYS was founded in 1979 in association with the Atlantic Northeast District Church of the Brethren. It has been headquartered at its current location inside the Oregon Mill since 1989.
“COBYS just started out doing very basic foster care,” said Stokes. “Over the years, the need for services has grown, and our agency has grown to meet those needs. What we pride ourselves on most is how we deliver our care.”
For additional information on COBYS, go to www.cobys.org.
Trip participants will then travel to the Hagley Museum, site of the Eleutherian Mills Residence, which was the first DuPont house. During a guided two-hour tour of the house and gardens, attendees will learn about the 150 years of family history represented by the residence. Also at the museum is a gunpowder factory that was once run by the DuPont family. The coach is scheduled to return to Fuhrman Park by 6 p.m.
The cost includes all
admission fees, lunch, transportation by coach bus and tips. To make reservations by Thursday, Sept. 7, contact Janie Garber at 717-940-0037 or jgarber 416@gmail.com.

Local dentist donates to Bear Bags program
Dr. Edward E. White Jr., owner of White Family Dental, recently donated $16,913 to the Elizabethtown Area Education Foundation for the Bear Bags program, which provides supplemental food to students and families in need within the Elizabethtown Area School District (EASD). Since 2017, White has contributed a total of approximately $54,886 to the program.
The Bear Bags program began in 2013 as a partnership between EASD social worker Jennifer Fields and two community members. Initial start-up fees were donated by local churches. An agreement was secured with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank to purchase food at a discounted price.
Since that time, the Bear Bags program has continued to grow, and it is fully funded
by donations from local community members, youth groups, student organizations and churches. Thanks to a grant from Capital Blue Cross in 2018, the Bear Bags program was able to purchase a refrigerator and freezer, allowing families to receive fresh eggs, milk and frozen meats and vegetables.
On a weekly basis, backpacks are sent home with participating students districtwide to provide nutritious items when school meals are not available. In addition, families are invited to attend a monthly shopping event to obtain larger quantities of food. During summer months, families are invited to select items from the storage room.
The program is run by volunteers. Each week, Three Mile Island security staff members help to unload the
food deliveries. Students from the Elizabethtown Area High School Life Skills classroom, led by Rebecca Booth, pack and deliver the bags to each school when in session.
W hite has supported the program through the purchase of backpacks, the proceeds from a White-Out Against Hunger fundraising event in August 2019 and funds from the Smiles for Life campaign. White Family Dental offers whitening yearround, with 100% of proceeds supporting children in need through the Bear Bags and Smiles for Life programs.
Prior to the pandemic, approximately 125 students benefited from Bear Bags on a weekly basis. COVID-19 restrictions and a move from the school district to Community Place on Washington put a hold on program operations, which resumed in early 2023.
The new location allows for collaboration with other agencies on the campus to ensure that more needs are met.
The program is in need of volunteers to help with deliveries, organize the room, clean and prepare for events. Monetary donations can be made directly to the Elizabethtown Area Education Foundation with a designation noted for the Bear Bags program. The program also accepts gift cards to local grocery stores, used to purchase essential items not available through the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. Donations of food, household or personal care items are welcome.
Anyone interested in donating time or funds may contact Fields at 717-3671533, ext. 21108. Families in need of program services may also contact Fields for registration information.

said Tricia Morris, Clothing Barn coordinator. “We are providing a service for the community, and we really need volunteers.”
Volunteers are especially needed for Wednesdays, which the Clothing Barn added to its operating schedule earlier this year. The hours of the Clothing Barn are 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays and Thursdays and 9 a.m. to noon on the f ourth Saturday of the month.
The Clothing Barn is stocked with clothes for infants through adults, with a variety of accessories, including shoes, belts, blankets and ties.

“ We changed our hours to coordinate with the food bank, so we are open when the food bank is open,” she said. “I hope to add an evening in the future to make it easier for people who are limited by their jobs or transportation access during the day.”
The Clothing Barn is an outgrowth of a previous UCEA program that operated at the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center, said Dave Fritchman, UCEA volunteer coordinator.
“One Saturday a month, members of the church who signed up for that month would arrange clothing collected from their church members on tables for people to access free of charge,” he explained. “This model eventually was discontinued due

to concerns that the clothing was not getting to those for whom it was intended.” Next, UCEA provided funds for clients to access clothing at local thrift shops, before the ministry transitioned to using a garage owned by an area resident, Doug Lamb, for the purpose of providing free clothing to clients referred by local nonprofits.
“So clients would have easier access, it was determined that this clothing ministry should relocate to Community Place on Washington, which opened to UCEA programs, Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC) and ECHOS in October 2018,” Fritchman explained. “A garage on campus was rebuilt, and the Clothing Barn opened in that space in July 2019.”
Morris noted that Clothing Barn volunteers need to be age 18 or older, and she

The third annual Penn State Solar Law Symposium for attorneys and energy professionals will be held virtually on Wednesday, Aug. 23, from noon to 4:30 p.m.
The event, co-sponsored by Penn State Extension, Penn State’s Center for Energy Law and Policy, and the Penn State Center for Agricultural and Shale Law, is designed for those with beginning and intermediate levels of solar law knowledge. The program will continue building on the information from previous years’ symposiums.
This year’s webinar topics will include a large-scale solar overview; solar development from the perspectives of the
landowner, developer, and municipality; public utility commission considerations; and Pennsylvania-New JerseyMaryland interconnection considerations.
Four hours of Pennsylvania continuing legal education credits are available to attendees. To complete the required registration by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22, visit www.bit.ly/solar law2023. Registrants will also receive access to the webinar recording. Questions may be directed to Joseph C. Conklin at juc50@psu.edu.
Anyone who needs an accommodation may contact Suzanne Roseman at 717279-4391 in advance of the symposium.
Virtual workshop will teach tree pruning
Penn State Extension will offer a virtual workshop on how to correctly prune trees.
“W hy We Should Be Making Small Pruning Cuts” will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 29, from noon to 1 p.m.
Branch failure can be caused by wind, ice, snow or a climber aloft. Such breakage can result in costly property damage, personal injury, power outages or blocked roads.
During the upcoming workshop, attendees will learn how tree branches deal with loading throughout the tree structure. There will also be a discussion on the biology around why small cuts are better than larger cuts and the impacts of decay on wound closure after pruning.
The program is designed to benefit municipal managers, foresters and arborists, as well as others interested in urban
and community forestry.
The webinar is free, but a fee may be associated with the following credits: Society of American Foresters (CFE), pending approval; International Society of Arboriculture; Certificate of Attendance for Professionals and Others to Self-Report; and Peer Volunteer/Master Gardener Update Training.
The program is being presented by the Penn State Extension in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, State and Private Forestry; Pennsylvania DCNR, Bureau of Forestry; and Pennsylvania TreeVitalize Program, Pennsylvania Community Trees.
To register, visit https://extension.psu.edu/ education-format/webinars and search for “Why We Should Be Making Small Pruning Cuts.”
