Lions plan Cruise In and chicken barbecue

“It’sa fun event for showing your vehicle or to stop by for an hour and just enjoy the vehicles being displayed and have lunch,” said John Lerch, treasurer of the Elizabethtown Lions Club, describing the 22nd annual Cruise In and chicken barbecue. “There is no charge for spectators, but of course, donations are welcome.” The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rheems Fire Department, 350 Anchor Road, Elizabethtown. Registration for the car show will begin at 8 a.m. Presented by Moats’ Auto Repair, it will be held rain or shine, and the car show is open to all types of vehicles, including cars, trucks, motorcycles and tractors. “Antique and modern, stock and custom, even professional and commercial vehicles are also welcome - both in service and retired,” Lerch said. “There are several trophies to compete for, although this is a ‘fun’ show, not a formally judged show.” Trophies will include Best of Show,

Blessing the community with a meal

The congregation of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elizabethtown takes Matthew 25:35 to heart when the Loaves and Fishes Café operates.

“We do this because Jesus says to,” said senior pastor A.J. Domines, describing the meal ministry. “The

Bible says, ‘For I was hungry, and you gave me food.’ We are doing this in obedience to the Lord, who calls us to feed the hungry.”

The Loaves and Fishes Café provides a free takeout dinner on Thursdays from 5 to 5:30 p.m. at the church, 125 E. High St., Elizabethtown. The ministry launched in the spring of 2020, during the

Participant’s Choice, Best Truck, Best Motorcycle, Best Tractor and several sponsored trophies. “There will be a special award in memory of club member and retired Donegal High School band director Glen Leib,” Lerch noted.

“They will get to see some great cars, trucks and motorcycles of a variety of types.”

Chicken barbecue meals will be available for pickup from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Featuring Peters’ Barbecue, each meal will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, a roll, applesauce and water.

The festivities will also include music from a DJ, food trucks, vendors and fire trucks on display from Rheems Fire Department.

Proceeds from the event will benefit both the Rheems and Elizabethtown fire departments as well as various community organizations, including The Community Cupboard

of Elizabethtown and the Elizabethtown Area School District facility dog program.

Tickets for the chicken barbecue may be purchased from any Elizabethtown Lions Club member or at Sloan’s Norlanco Pharmacy, 428 Cloverleaf Road; B&G Lumber, 212 W. High St.; Donnie G. Boyer & Co., 112 S. Market St.; and Cocker’s Towing, 355 Hershey Road. The deadline to purchase tickets is Wednesday, Sept. 6. A limited number of meals will be available for purchase on the day of the event, but preorders are encouraged.

To register for the car show, visit www.etownpalions.org. There is a discount for registering by Friday, Sept. 8, but registration will also be accepted on the day of the event. Lerch said people who come to the event can expect a day of fun. “They will get to see some great cars, trucks and motorcycles of a variety of types,” he noted. “There will be plenty of food and a variety of music and a great variety of people that enjoy vehicles of all types.”

Library will host Craft Fair with a Small Business Flair

Creativity will on display when the Elizabethtown Public Library hosts its 14th annual Craft Fair with a Small Business Flair. The event will run from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9. It will be held at the library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown.

“We have a wide variety of items and a nice variety of vendors,” said Dorinda Nolan, craft show organizer.

“About half of the vendors are

repeats from previous years and half are new.”

Crafters will be set up throughout the main floor of the library as well as the second floor. Vendors will include Crafts by Elly, featuring homemade fabric table runners, bowl warmers and more; Bonnie Wilbur Fine Art, showcasing handpainted ornaments, jewelry, notebooks, bookmarks and magnets; and Lola Love Letter, featuring hand-lettered home goods.

Borough to officially open new playground

The Elizabethtown Borough Council will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the official opening of new playground at Elizabethtown’s Community Park on Thursday, Aug. 31, at 6 p.m. All families in the area are invited to join the celebration at 1 Ken Lane, Elizabethtown.

Over the past year, the borough has planned and worked toward the creation of a new playground to replace the Fun Fort Playground, which served as a play area for over three decades. The new playground features a diverse array of interactive and accessible play elements, from imaginative play structures to sensory experiences. The borough used a portion of its American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding to support the development of the playground.

For more information and updates about the ribbon-cutting, visit www.etownonline.com, call 717-367-1700 or email rdenlinger@etownonline.com.

from recycled aluminum cans,” Nolan noted. “Her items are very detailed, intricate and really beautiful.”

Members of Fiber Artists at the library will sell their creations, with all proceeds from the sale of items going directly to the library. “We also have someone making amigurumi, which are crocheted stuffed animals,” Nolan remarked. “And we have Pink Gem Essence, which sells decorated cans and tumblers.”

Vendors come from throughout the Elizabethtown area as well as nearby counties and as far away as New York state.

“We are having the Feisty Woman, who is from New York, and she sells books, candles, pens, pins and journals,” Nolan stated. “She heard about the craft show and wanted to participate.”

Dress a Girl Around the World will feature pottery, ornaments, kitchen towels, tote bags and more. All proceeds will help fund the cre-

ation of dresses made by local women to send to girls in need or girls who are at risk for human trafficking.

Nolan noted that the Friends of the Elizabethtown Public Library will hold their fall book sale in the lower level during the craft fair and that the craft show coincides with 2nd Friday in Elizabethtown, so there will be a lot going on in town.

Proceeds from the craft show support the general operating fund of the library.

Nolan, who retired from the library in June, has volunteered to continue organizing the craft fair because she enjoys seeing people come into the library and shop the unique products.

“It’s a great opportunity to start your Christmas shopping early,” she said. “The prices are reasonable. I also like that the craft fair makes people more aware of the library and what we offer. It gets people in the door.”

Volunteers to work with refugee children

Judy Kay Bard and her son, Dan Bard, who works with students with special needs, will accompany Lark Eshleman on a return trip to Romania from late September into October. They will aim to help stabilize and provide mental health services to children and teensmany of whom are orphanswho have been sent out of Ukraine for their safety. Eshleman spent several weeks in Medias, Romania, last fall with

dozens of children and teens who continue to live in an orphanage in that part of Transylvania, and she plans to see those refugee children again on this trip. The team will also work with preschoolers in Sibiu and other refugee children in Cluj on the upcoming trip.

While the adults pay most of their own costs, tax-deductible donations will be accepted toward the cost of materials for each child in the program.

Donations may be made to the Kiwanis Club Norlanco Rheems Foundation (KCNR Foundation), a nonprofit held by the Norlanco Rheems Kiwanis Club. For more information on how to donate, email Barb O’Neal at oneal1301@comcast.net.

Additionally, donations of hand-made crib-size blankets are being delivered to the crew from a quilting club in Philadelphia, led by Susan Heydt’s aunt, Nancy Stevens.

height of the pandemic, although Domines had the idea to start the program earlier.

“This was something I wanted to do even before COVID, particularly over the summer months when children who get breakfast and lunch at school were not getting that,” he recalled. “I wondered, ‘What do they do over the summer?’ That question became even more important during COVID when they weren’t going to school at all.”

The ministry began as a lunch outreach in May of 2020, with volunteers cooking the food inside the church kitchen and serving it at tables outside.

The ministry continued

over lunch throughout that summer, but the decision was made to move to dinnertime in the hopes of serving even more people.

Volunteers come to the church about 3 p.m. or sometimes earlier to begin cooking the meal.

“It’s evolved and developed over the last three years. We’re able to serve 35 families in 30 minutes,” Domines noted. “We might get one person who comes and takes five meals for a family of five, so we don’t see 100 people coming in the door, but 80 to 100 individual meals go out of our kitchen.”

The meal is open to anyone, he emphasized. “We ask no questions, other than your

name and how many people are in your household so we know how many we’re feeding,” he said. The first time people come for a meal, they can just show up, and then they are asked if they plan to return the following week for planning purposes.

The menu varies based on what the church can find on sale or through Blessings of Hope. “We’ve done baked chicken, roast pork and sauerkraut, pasta with sauce and Italian sausage,” Domines shared. “We try to keep it healthy. We always serve a piece of fruit or some kind of fresh vegetable, and we always serve a dessert.”

In addition to the dinners, the ministry often gives away extras such as eggs, cereal, orange juice or milk, donated

by congregation members or purchased from Blessings of Hope.

Domines said church members have enthusiastically embraced the ministry. “I hardly ever lack for volunteers, and sometimes, there’s not a lot for people to do because so many people are here volunteering.”

Although many of the guests who come through the line are familiar faces week after week, the ministry continues to grow. “I don’t think a week has gone by in the last six months where we haven’t received a new person or family,” Domines said. He encourages anyone with a need to come for a meal. People should park in the church parking lot and enter through the back door.

DeMolay members attend Key Man Conference

Nine members of Elizabethtown Chapter, Order of DeMolay, attended the Pennsylvania DeMolay Key Man Conference, held July 30 to Aug. 5 at the Masonic Conference Center Patton Campus in Elizabethtown. The weeklong DeMolay leadership training conference was attended by more than 70 DeMolay members from Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia. The conference offered attendees the opportunity to learn leadership skills and to set personal goals that may prepare them for future service to the organization as well as life in general.

Past Master Councilor Kenton Green, state senior councilor for Pennsylvania DeMolay and a resident of Quarryville, attended in the Jurisdictional Officer Track and worked with 12 other state officers on projects that included jurisdictional event planning, public speaking, mentoring younger members and assisting advisers in the supervision of several activities at the conference. Also attending were Sanskar Dhakal, Saraal Dhakal, Brixton Hevener, Rewan Neopaney, Ronit Neopaney, and Bradyn Nolt, all of Elizabethtown; Rusty Armstrong of Willow Street; and Noah Martin of Wrightsville.

Local DeMolay advisers who served on the staff of the 2023 Pennsylvania DeMolay Key Man Conference included adviser Daniel Bryan of Middletown and treasurer Dave Berry. A volunteer staff of nearly 35

DeMolay advisers is required to supervise the weeklong conference.

Elizabethtown Chapter, Order of DeMolay, is a fraternal organization for young men ages 12 to 21. The Order of DeMolay seeks to teach the principles of good citi-
