Local Girl Scouts complete Silver Award project

Members

of a local Girl Scout troop recently completed their Silver Award project at Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary (SSBVM) Catholic School in Middletown. Students will be able to enjoy the Scouts’ work for years to come.

The Scouts, led by troop leader Kay Livelsberger and mentor Angela Waner, SSBVM principal, installed five drums for the younger students to play with and painted multiplication tables in the outdoor recess lot.

Scouts who completed the project were Gwen Hoover and Kaylee Meisinger, students at Elizabethtown Area Middle School, and Trinity Garcia, Ava Livelsberger and Meadow May, students at Donegal Junior High School. The girls are members of Troop 71686, which meets at Conoy Brethren in Christ Church, Elizabethtown.

“The Girl Scouts did a great job. The drums are in our preschool Play Lab,” noted Mindy Kennedy, SSBVM director of development, explaining that the Play Lab is an outdoor classroom used in early childhood education. “The multiplication table is on our recess lot. Kindergarten

the Scouts completed a total of 251 hours working on the project.

The idea for the project originated with Ava, whose family members are parishioners at SSBVM Catholic Church. “Our troop leader told us to ask around in order to figure out what was (a need) in the community,” said Meadow. “Ava asked the pastor and people at the church, and they said that that they needed the five musical drums to be put in. We came up with the multiplication tables.”

through eighth-grade students can access them during daily outdoor recess. Our teachers may also take their math lessons outside for games on the table.”

Meadow explained that the Silver Award is the second-highest award in Girl Scouts. “Each girl must put in 50 hours,” she said, noting that

The troop, along with help from family members, completed the project on weekends from April through August. “The school had the drums, and we had to put them in concrete,” Meadow explained. “We had to raise the money, but we got a donation from Home Depot in Lancaster.” JB Hostetter & Sons of Mount Joy donated the use of a cement mixer.

Putting kindness into action

“Life is short, and it goes by fast,” said Masonic Village at Elizabethtown resident Mary Jones. “It’s so important to share with each other and try to make the world a better place.”

That’s just what Jones did when she and a team of volunteers organized activities for residents at the Elizabethtown retirement community during Be Kind to Humankind Week, Aug. 25 to 31.

As Jones explained, the idea for the project came about after Jones and a friend were discussing how they feel that kindness has fallen

Building good habits through biking

When youths are riding bikes as part of Lifecycles, they are doing much more than getting some exercise.

As Lifecycles founder Lee DeRemer explained, neurological research has emerged in the past few years showing that when you challenge yourself to do hard things and you complete them, you can actually change the way your brain works.

“It’s about a creating a set of habits that says, ‘I can do this,’ instead of, ‘I think that’s too hard,’” Lee shared.

Forty-three teens experienced what it’s like to “do hard things,” the motto of Lifecycles, when they participated in Challenge Rides this summer. One team rode 320 miles from the Pittsburgh area to Washington, D.C., while another team rode 535 miles from Portland, Maine, to Valley Forge. Three other teams completed a 380-mile journey around Lake Champlain and Lake George on the border of New York and Vermont. “They all did very well on the rides,” Lee said. “They dealt with See Biking pg 5

Kindness

out of favor in today’s society.

“A lot of people here at Masonic need a little high, and we thought it would be nice if we could come up with acts of kindness,” she said.

Jones, who is president of the Village Green Association at Masonic Village, gathered a group of about 15 residents who started planning activities a few months ago.

During Be Kind to Humankind Week, the group handed out painted rocks and encouraged residents to write a positive message on them before placing the rocks somewhere on the campus for others to find or passing the rocks on to someone else. They crafted honeybees out of pipe cleaners and created a

cornhole-like game with prizes, passed out stickers about kindness, wrapped a kind saying in napkins for meals and distributed loaves of bread made by a resident.

“We frosted and decorated 1,300 cookies with smiley faces,” Jones shared. “We passed them out to everybody on campus.”

The kindness activities were well-received by the residents, she noted, adding, “People have been talking about it all over the place. It’s neat to go by and hear someone talking about it. It’s been a very good week.”

Jones said an unexpected bonus came from the week as well. “The group that helped with this project has

Quest to offer educational programs

Quest for Learning Lancaster recently released its fall 2023 program schedule of classes for retirees and other lifelong learners. Sessions will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., Lancaster.

For more than 40 years, Quest for Learning has offered people of retirement age in the Lancaster community an opportunity to attend a series of educational and enlightening seminars. Sessions are presented by leading local experts in their fields, including

Biking frompg

educators, public officials, business/community leaders, writers, artists and musicians.

Programs will be held on Thursdays from Sept. 28 through Nov. 2. Each date will feature two 50-minute sessions, one at 9:40 a.m. and another at 11 a.m. A coffee and cookie break will be held between sessions that is included in the program cost, which covers the entire series.

The 17th annual Richard Keller Memorial Lecture Series presenters are faculty

from the Millersville University Department of History. The programs will include “Classic Film Series: Underappreciated Actresses” by Robert J. Bresler, coordinator; “Music: Listen, Look, Understand, Enjoy” by Davis Giersch, presenter; “Short Story Discussion Group” by Victoria Ehrhardt, coordinator; “Biological Curiosities: Conversation Starters for the Holidays” by Jean G. Boal and Robert C. Paul, presenters; “The Spanish

fatigue, rain and heat, but they pushed through, and they all came back very proud of themselves.”

Lifecycles began in 2015, when Lee and his wife, Marcie, created the program to provide friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus. The organization is open to boys and girls ages 12 to 18, and all equipment and programming is provided free of charge.

“There are no tryouts,” Lee commented. “Anyone who wants to join can join.” Participants do not need to be experienced bike riders, he noted, adding that youths are placed in a group based on their skill level.

Lifecycles has a mission of building young men and women of character. “We do it through long-distance cycling,” Lee remarked. “We invest in the kids, and we provide a faith-based curriculum, one for the girls and one for the boys. The program is all about outdoor adventure and building self-confidence.”

He noted that the lessons learned in Lifecycles can be applied to school, work and life outside of biking. “You build a habit pattern that has a bit of a courage and a confidence aspect to it, instead of setting your goals so low because you’re afraid of failure,” he explained. “This is a positive and encouraging environment where boys and girls can discover more of their gifts, growing into the person they were created to become.”

This season of Lifecycles will wrap up in mid-October, and the new season will begin next April. The

program is open to youths throughout Lancaster County. For more

Historical society plans chicken and waffle dinner

The Maytown Historical Society will serve up comfort food at a fundraiser later this month. A chicken and waffle dinner will be held at the society’s museum, 4 W. High St., Maytown, on Saturday, Sept. 30, from noon to 5 p.m. The meal will be available for takeout or to enjoy outside in the yard behind the museum.

In addition to homemade chicken and waffles, the dinner will include green beans, coleslaw, desserts, coffee and water.

This is the first time the historical society has held a chicken and waffle dinner, said Linda Good, vice president of the society, but the group members were inspired by a breakfast they organized earlier this year.

“That was very well received, and everything worked well with the breakfast, so we thought we’d try another meal,” Good explained. “We have some really great cooks who are part of the historical

society, and Janie Garber is our head cook for this. She makes delicious chicken and waffles.”

Proceeds from the meal will help the society with ongoing projects, including raising funds to expand. The group is looking to either build onto its existing site or move to a larger space in Maytown.

“We have so many wonderful things we’d like to display, but we just don’t have the room to display them,” Good explained. “We want to be able to show off what we have.”

The chicken and waffle meal also serves another purpose, she noted. “It’s a way for us to share what we do with the community and maybe get some young people involved,” she said. “We want to become a more active group and reach out to more people in the community.”

Good shared that a group of volunteers works weekly on digitizing, recording and storing artifacts and documents that come into the museum.

She encourages anyone with an interest in Maytown’s history to consider joining the historical society.

“We are a group of people who are concerned about preserving our history,” she said. “We want to promote and save all the history that’s happened in Maytown.”

The Maytown Historical Society’s biggest fundraiser of the year is Mayfest, a daylong celebration held in May. Good noted that organizers are already planning next year’s Mayfest, which she promises will be bigger and better than ever.

The historical society also holds public programs throughout the year. The next program will be held on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the East Donegal Township building, 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta. The organization will host a Christmas Gala at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 14. The location of the gala is to be determined.

Tickets for the chicken and waffle dinner may be purchased by calling Janie Garber at 717-940-0037. Advance tickets will be sold for a discount until Saturday, Sept. 23. Tickets will also be available at the door. There is no charge for children under age 5.

the longest amount of time because we had to make sure the paint did not bleed and was not pigmented, so we had to go over it twice,” Meadow said. “We could not use the stencils twice, so we had to make extras of each one and make sure the numbers did not bleed. The numbers had to be perfect.”

The girls also installed the drums into cement.

Museum plans Teddy Bear Clinic

“Rainwater (filled the) part that was dug out, so we had to hand mix all the cement,” Meadow added.

For their projects, the girls will be presented with a Silver Award pin for them to wear on the front of their vests. “The best part of the Silver Award is that you create something that keeps going on after the project,” Meadow said.

The Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum, 410 N. Lime St., Lancaster, will host its first Teddy Bear Clinic on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This interactive and educational event is designed to help children become more at ease with medical check-ups by involving their trusted stuffed companions.

Children can bring their stuffed animals to the museum for a full wellness checkup, including check-in, height and weight measurement, listening to the animal’s heart with a stethoscope, and even a mock vaccination.

Stuffed animals in need of extra care can be treated at the Teddy Bear Hospital, where experienced volunteers will

mend any injuries or illnesses they may have.

Children will have the opportunity to meet real health care professionals, including doctors, nurses, and other medical staff members from Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health and affiliates who will share their expertise and answer questions.

The Teddy Bear Clinic is

open to children of all ages. The event is free with the price of admission, which is discounted for students. Admission is free for Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health employees and children under age 3. Preregistration can be done in advance at https:// teddybearclinicLMHM.event brite.com or on-site on the day of the event.

“Rhapsody in Blue” concert planned

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO), led by music director Michael Butterman, will kick off its 77th season with a program featuring George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 16, at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. A free pre-concert lecture will begin

45 minutes before each performance. The concerts will be held at the LSO’s new home, the Gardner Theatre within Lancaster Country Day School, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster. The concert’s theme centers around rhythm in music and showcases how composers can combine different genres to expand the world of classical music. The LSO will welcome Cuban pianist and composer Aldo López-Gavilán, who will

also perform his original composition “Emporium,” which blends classical and jazz sounds. The program will also include music by Jessie Montgomery and Alberto Ginastera, both of whom find ways to inject new rhythms and culture into their music.

To further celebrate its inaugural season in a new home, the LSO invites all audience members to gather

in the theater’s grand lobby after each performance for drinks, refreshments, silent auctions, and a chance to meet Butterman, LópezGavilán, and the musicians of the LSO.

Free parking is available on-site. Tickets range in price and can be purchased by calling the LSO box office at 717-291-6440 or visiting www.lancastersymphony.org /rhapsody-in-blue.

P.E.O. chapter awards grant

P.E.O. Chapter BM of Palmyra awarded Jocelyn Shaffer a $5,000 Program for Continuing Education (PCE) grant to complete an associate degree in nursing at Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences. The PCE grant is awarded to a woman who has decided to further her education after an interruption of at least 24 months.

Shaffer is currently the activities director at Cornwall Manor Retirement Community, where she oversees five fulltime and two part-time employees. She lives in Elizabethtown and has served the retired population in various capacities for 14 years. She currently holds a Bachelor of Science in recreation from Brigham Young University but has decided she could serve the

retired population better as a registered nurse.

P.E.O. - Philanthropic Educational Organization - focuses on the advancement of women through scholarships, grants, awards, and loans, and seeks to motivate women to achieve their highest potential. In the 40 years of its existence, Palmyra P.E.O. Chapter BM has secured financial assistance totaling over $500,000 for more than 70 women in Lebanon, Dauphin, and Lancaster counties.

In addition to the PCE grant, P.E.O. Project awards range from $2,500 to $20,000 for educational programs from professional certifications to doctoral degrees. For more information about the financial aid available, visit www.peo international.org/projects.
