A new place to play Come shopping at the library bookstore

residents have a new place to play, and it’s open for everyone.
The playground at Community Park held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 31 at Elizabethtown Community Park, 1 Ken Lane.
Hundreds of community members and project partners turned out to celebrate the new space, said Rebecca Denlinger, borough manager. “There were likely a few hundred people out and about on the playground after we cut the ribbon and allowed everyone to race on the playground to find their favorite piece of equipment,” she stated. “And we got a lot of thumbs up from kids and families as they left at the end of the evening, all promising to come back and play again soon.”
The playground has truly been a community effort, she noted, adding that plans began at the start of last year to replace the 30-year-old Fun Fort that closed on the site in November of 2022.
“We engaged the community with a survey, through which nearly 500 people shared their thoughts and hopes for the design of the new playground,” Denlinger stated. “Staff and our amazing consultants helped make the community’s wishes come to life.”
Features of the new playground include opportunities for imaginative play and sensory experiences. A nature-inspired design highlights a vibrant color palette that complements the natural surroundings of the park. A poured-in rubber surface provides a smooth and safe surface for people of all ages, and inclusive play elements can be found throughout the playground.
“Key components featuring back and core supports, such as the bucket swing, seesaw and spinner, are a testament to our commitment to inclusivity,” Denlinger shared. “These elements provide not only fun but also benefits for all children,
regardless of their mobility abilities.”
A communication board fosters interaction between speaking and non-speaking children as well, she said, adding, “It serves as a means to support and enhance communication, ensuring that every child’s voice is heard and understood.”
Denlinger noted that the project would not be possible without the support of community members, consultants and borough staff members. The consultant team
included Lancaster Civil Engineering Company, YSM Landscape Architects, General Recreation Inc. and Play for All Consulting.
“And a heartfelt acknowledgment goes to all contractors, subcontractors and professionals involved, including the primary contractor, Willow Playworks, who put their years of experience with playground installation across the United States to work right here in Elizabethtown,” she stated, acknowledging additional

The next time you’re looking to buy a book, stop by the Elizabethtown Public Library. You may think a library only lends books, but the Friends of Elizabethtown Public Library operate a bookstore in the building, located at 10 S. Market St.
“We carry a wide selection of books,” said Pat Casper, secretary
of the Friends. “We have history, biography, fiction, nonfiction, children’s books.” The store features a collection of classic and antique books, including series like the Bobbsey Twins and Nancy Drew, and sells coffee table and specialty books as well.
Along with books, the store sells DVDs, puzzles, jewelry, artwork and doll clothes.

Building connections and giving back
BY CATHY MOLITORISGreat things happen when women on a mission get together. Lancaster County Women for Good formed last year with the goal of raising money for local nonprofits. So far, the group has donated more than $23,000, with 284 women contributing to the effort.
Most recently, the organization presented a check for $7,000 to Arch Street Center at Lancaster County Women for Good’s quarterly Gather & Grant meeting. Located in Lancaster, Arch Street Center
provides support and services for adults living with mental illness.
Lancaster County Women for Good began as an outreach of Grapevine, a social giving platform that brings people together for philanthropic work. “Grapevine initiated a bunch of groups in different areas of the country and from that point handed it over to local leadership,” said founding member Anna Horst. She’s joined by the local leadership team of group host Joelle Terranova and event coordinators Susan Klapkin and Kirstin Knopp.

representatives from the Air Force, Army, Army National Guard and Navy will be present.

“Deb Kramer makes our doll clothes,” Casper said of the local resident. There are clothes to fit all sizes of American Girl dolls, from the 18-inch dolls to Bitty Babies and WellieWishers. “She also makes bean bags that we sell, and those are very popular with children,” Casper noted.
A case by the cash register displays handmade jewelry for sale, with the current selection created by Sue Houseal.
“We also have local artwork on display on the walls and for sale,” Casper remarked. “We change the display about every two months.”
Other than the jewelry, artwork and doll clothes, the bookstore’s stock comes from community donations. “We go through the books we receive for our Friends’ book sales, and these are the best of the donations,” Casper explained. “The books are all in beautiful shape, and everything is very affordable. Sometimes, we even have entire series of books that have been donated.”
If customers are looking for a specific book but it’s not in stock, they can fill out a book request form at the register. “We’ll keep the form downstairs where we sort books, and if it comes in, we’ll contact the person and hold the book for them,” Casper said.
Although the bookstore is popu-
lar year-round, it’s especially busy in the weeks leading up the holidays, she noted. “We get a lot of foot traffic in November and December,” she said. “We have an option for people to purchase a book and a gift bag and tissue, and you can just buy the book, pop it in the bag, and you’re good to go with a gift.”
She noted that the bookstore, which is located at the front of the library just inside the Market Street entrance, is open anytime the library is open. Operating the store requires a team of volunteers.
“It takes all of us to run this, but we have lots of volunteer help, which is wonderful,” Casper said. Proceeds from the bookstore benefit programs and activities at the library, and Casper hopes more people will check out the store.
“This bookstore is really an asset to the community,” she said, “and a lot of people don’t realize we’re in here.”

Each local group sets its own fundraising parameters. For the Lancaster group, women are asked to commit to giving a minimum of $50 per quarter. In the weeks leading up to the group’s Gather & Grant meetings - which are held in February, May, August and November - members may nominate a nonprofit they’d like to support.
“The nonprofit can have a national or global reach, but it must serve our local community,” Horst explained. “It also must be a 501(c)(3) in good standing.”
From the list of nominees, members vote for their favorites, and representatives from the top three choices are invited to come to a Gather & Grant meeting to give a presentation about their organization and answer any questions. The group then votes on the recipient of that quarter’s donation.
As of now, the organization raises all of its funds through member donations, but Horst said organizers are looking into sponsorships and fundraisers in the future.
Along with Gather & Grant meet-
ings, which are usually held at Southern Market in downtown Lancaster, the group members also meet once a month for Girl’s Night Out.
“We’ll get together to support a local business, and it’s an extra bonus if the business is woman-owned,” Horst said. “It’s an opportunity to have fun, socialize, ask questions about our organization and meet other women.”
While most Gather & Grants and Girl’s Night Out events are held on the second Wednesday of the month, October’s Girl’s Night Out will be held on the third Wednesday of the month due to the Manheim Farm Show. It will happen at Horst Arts, 17 N. Main St., Manheim, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18.

For Horst, Lancaster County Women for Good has offered an easy way to give back to local organizations while also making friends.
“I love the idea of making philanthropy accessible to everyone,” Horst said. “I also like that it gives everyone an opportunity to meet like-minded women who have similar outlooks on philanthropy.”
She said women who are involved with local nonprofits are especially encouraged to join. “It’s a great way to network and to meet potential volunteers or donors and get to know people who can support your organization,” she stated.

Denlinger also noted that two borough staff members in particular - assistant borough manager Ann Roda and public works director Jeff Kinsey - deserve special recognition for their leadership and project management. “They went above and beyond in their efforts to bring this playground from wishes and
concept through planning, construction and now play,” she said.
She added that the community’s help is still being sought to finalize a name for the new playground.
“We are currently referring to it simply as ‘the playground at Community Park,’” she said. “The borough is hoping that with opening the playground, families will be inspired by playing there to help us give it a proper name in the coming months.”
Haldeman Mansion to be site of Victorian Tea
The historic Haldeman Mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge, will be the setting for a Victorian Tea on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 4 p.m. Included in the fare will be a seasonal salad, choice of soup, several sandwiches, homemade scones with lemon curd and jellies, petit fours and an assortment of hot and cold teas.
All proceeds will benefit the continuing restoration of the grand stone house. The main staircase and formal entrance room have recently been completely restored. The great room is in the final stages of restoration. Its twin fireplaces adorned with King of Prussia marble will serve as the backdrop for the tea.
The tea is just one of the annual fundraising events open to the public. The Strawberry Festival in June and the Fall Fest held every October are two of the other fundraising events. The mansion also holds nature and history classes for homeschooled students every Wednesday in September, October, April and May. The mansion is also part of Lancaster County’s ExtraGive fundraising event held in November.

FIA receives recognition, plans banquets
Friends In Action International (FIA), a faith-based nonprofit organization in Middletown, recently received multiple recognitions. The organization exists to assist missionaries serving in areas of limited infrastructure by using construction projects to help them share the Gospel with unreached people groups.
The organization recently received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of nonprofits. Only onequarter of the 1.5 million charities rated have achieved this status. The four-star rating is the highest rating offered by Charity Navigator and verifies that FIA demonstrates strong financial health and a commitment to accountability and transparency. A detailed review of financial documents, such as the organization’s Form 990, audited financials, and key policies, indicated that FIA adheres to sector best practices and financially executes its mission efficiently.
In addition, FIA was listed as a 2023 top-rated organization by GreatNonProfits.org after accumulating over 60 five-star reviews from supporters. As part of the process to select the winner, volunteers, donors, and people served by nonprofits are asked to share stories of inspiration, express appreciation,
and rate charity service.
FIA also received the platinum rating - the highest rating available - from GuideStar, an online watchdog site that presents mission, legitimacy, impact, financial, programming, transparency, and governance information about every IRS-registered nonprofit organization.
“Friends In Action is humbled to receive these recognitions, but any success must be shared with our faithful supporters and volunteers,” said Andy Bachert, the organization’s chief operating officer. Bachert was referring to the more than 50 travelers who volunteer on one of 10 projects in six remote locations - Africa, Bolivia, Papua New Guinea, Nicaragua, Vanuatu, and Mexico - each year, as well as the more than 2,000 individuals on their mailing list who consistently pray or give to empower their support of frontline Gospel mission work.
Readers who would like to learn more about Friends In Action International can attend the organization’s annual awareness banquet. The event will be offered at two locations. On Friday, Oct. 27, a banquet will take place at Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta, at 6 p.m. The second event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey Hotel, 4650 Lindle Road, Har-

In addition, missionaries James and Morgan Tumwesiigye will share how FIA has helped their work among Ugandan women through their ministry at

Celebrating Marietta with history, cars and dogs
BY CATHY MOLITORISMarietta played a major role in the pig iron industry, and that history will be spotlighted at the 18th annual Pig Iron Fest. This year’s festival, to be held on Saturday, Sept. 30, will offer three events in one, combining the Pig Iron Fest with a car show and Dog Fest. The main location of the festivities will be Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“For the Pig Iron Fest, we wanted to get as many local restoration people involved as we could,” said Gary Schatz, a member of the Donegal Rotary Club, which is organizing the event. “We have people who have a lot of experience with the history of this area.” Lenny Droege will conduct walking tours of the Marietta Iron Furnace Park. “We’ll be running a shuttle from the church to the furnace area,” Schatz noted. Droege will
lead visitors through the MusselmanVesta Iron Furnace Center, which tells the history of the timber, iron and railroad industries in the area through displays, artifacts and an HO-scale diorama of the iron furnace. Participants will also be able to visit the Donegal and Marietta No. 1 furnaces, weather permitting. The shuttle will take visitors by the historical homes of Henry Watts and Henry Musselman, both iron masters of the mid-1800s, before returning to the church grounds.
The car show portion of the event is open to all makes and models of cars and motorcycles. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. on the day of the event, and trophies will be awarded at approximately 2 p.m.
Two food trucks - Spud Muffin and Kurtz Concessions - will be on-site for the festival, Tim Rinard will provide musical entertainment throughout the day and Steve Bailey will set up a

photo display. A Kids Zone will feature pumpkin painting, hayrides and other activities.
“We’ll have Miss Jan from the Milanof-Schock Library there, and she’ll be doing story readings,” Schatz said. “The kids’ activities are always very popular.”
The Dog Fest portion of the festivities will highlight furry friends, with ribbons awarded to every registered dog. “Dog Fest is a fundraiser for local rescues,” Schatz shared, explaining that the second annual event was rained out in May, so organizers decided to add it to the Pig Iron festivities. Pet-focused vendors will be on hand, and an area will be set up for people who would like to show off any special tricks or skills their dog can do.
Local K-9 officer Sarge will also
offer demonstrations.
Attendees are asked to bring a food item for the Community Care Center, a ministry of Community Bible Church, and proceeds from the festivities will benefit maintenance of the Musselman-Vesta building, local fire and police departments and local food banks.
“It’s going to be a fun day with so many things to do,” Schatz said. “You can pick one of the three events that appeals to you, or you can do all of them. It’s going to be a great time for everyone.”
The event is sponsored by the Donegal Rotary Club, Community Bible Church and East Donegal Township. For more information, visit https://donegalrotary.com or search for “Pig Iron Fest and Dog Fest” on Facebook.
