Speaking
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Forone hour twice a month, the members of the Elizabethtown Toastmasters promote personal and professional development, share information, learn new things - and have a lot of fun doing it all.
The club formed in September of 2019, and it’s open to anyone. “I think we are E-town’s best-kept secret,” said David Pelna, vice president of membership.
Elizabethtown Toastmasters is a chapter of Toastmasters International, a nonprofit educational organization that aims to help members improve communication and build leadership skills. Founded in 1924, Toastmasters International includes more than 16,800 clubs in 143 countries.
“This is a club for anybody who wants to improve their speaking and communication skills,” explained club president Matt Blazi. “It’s also a great opportunity for networking. We have people in our group of all ages, different experiences, different backgrounds.”
Each Toastmasters meeting follows the same format. A club member serves as Toastmaster for the
evening and acts as a sort of master of ceremonies. At a recent meeting, club member Kevin Schafer filled this role, introducing the schedule for the evening as well as the two speakers who gave prepared speeches on topics of their choice.
Blazi spoke on “The Lighthouses of Cape Cod,” following a curriculum prompt that required him to tackle a speech while managing a difficult audience. Jeff Boyle delivered a prepared speech about 988, a new nationwide mental health hotline.
Other roles filled by club members included evaluators, who scored the prepared speeches; an “ah” counter, who checked for filler words or speech stumbles; a grammarian, who checked for proper grammar and introduced a word of the day; and a timer, who made sure speakers stuck to prearranged speech lengths.
After the prepared speeches, club members were invited to give an impromptu speech on a variety of T able Topics. The theme for impromptu speeches at a recent meeting was autumn, and topics included prompts such as “What’s the ideal temperature?” and “Sell
me a pumpkin.”
Blazi explained that evaluating the speakers helps club members hone their public-speaking skills.
“It’s a time to learn, get feedback, grow, take notes and work to improve,” he remarked. Club members also vote on the best prepared speech and best impromptu speech of the evening.
Pelna said he joined the club to overcome the challenge of speaking in front of groups of people, something he often has to do in his job.
“I wanted to improve at work, but I also found it’s a skill I can apply to so many situations outside of work as well,” he said.
Blazi encourages anyone with an interest to visit the Toastmasters website or just come to a meeting. “Toastmasters has helped me become a better communicator,” he said, “and I can use that in so many aspects of my life.”
The Elizabethtown Toastmasters meets at Community Place on Washington, 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown, on the first and third Thursdays of the month from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.toastmasters.org or come to a meeting.

“Cornerstone has been built on a legacy of loving kids unconditionally,” said Jim Bush, executive director. “My goal is to follow in the f ootsteps of my predecessors. I don’t take that legacy lightly.”
Jim officially became the new executive director of Cornerstone Youth Center, 95 S. Wilson Ave., Elizabethtown, at the end of
September, but he took over the position in an interim role earlier in the summer after the unexpected death of then-director Laurie Shepler.
Jim’s wife, Michelle, was the board chair of Cornerstone at the time, and Jim has been a volunteer and teacher at the center. “I’ve always had a heart for reaching students, especially the ones on the fringes,” he said, noting that one of the first things he did was meet with students at Cornerstone to help them process their grief over losing their well-loved director.
W hile Jim thought he’d fill the role temporarily, he soon realized he wanted to stick around. “I felt God was opening a door for me,” he stated. “The longer I was here, the more I saw my skill set could help move the ministry forward.” His wife stepped down from the board, and Jim applied for the permanent position.
Although he has a business background that includes working in the real estate industry, Jim also has more than 25 years of experience in youth ministry and serves as an associate pastor of Activ8 Church in Lancaster.

W hen Maria Enriquez considers a show to direct, she asks herself the same question: Why this show now?
The director of “Agnes of God,” which will be performed at Susquehanna Stage later this month, said she found the play to be as relevant today as it was when it was written more than 40 years ago.
“This is a show that prompts the audience to ask questions about faith versus reason,” Enriquez stated.

Join The Junior Air Rifle Program
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
In the Junior Air Rifle program, youths can learn about gun safety and marksmanship in a safe and friendly environment. The program will meet at the Mount Joy Sportsmen’s Association, 85 Range Road, on Saturdays from Oct. 22 through Dec. 17. The classes will begin at 9 a.m., and new shooters are welcome to join the program at any time.
“The program is designed for kids ages 8 to 18 of varying levels of experience,” stated instructor Tom Amlie. “The expectation is that most of the shooters will be first-time participants. The program is meant to teach basic marksmanship skills in a safe environment.” Participants will begin shooting from sandbags in order to learn the basics of safe rifle operation, sight alignment and trigger control, he said, adding, “After that, we’ll move on to shooting using a sling, although smaller shooters might continue to shoot off sandbags for the entire season.”
An “air gun” is any gun where the projectile is propelled by compressed air, whether provided by a spring, an internal pump or a removable compressed air tank, Amlie explained, noting, “They can be anything from the Daisy Red Ryder to Olympic-quality rifles costing thousands of dollars.” The club provides air rifles for use, or shooters may bring their own as long as the gun has iron sights, meaning no scope or red-dot sight. “The club air rifles are designed for target shooting and are more appropriate than what most young people might already have,” he commented.
Amlie said that air rifles provide a good introduction to safe firearms handling. “Air rifles - with their minimal noise and recoil - provide a very low-stress introduction for even the smallest shooters,” he stated. “The club also offers a junior .22 rifle program in the
spring for ages 12 and up, so the air rifle program is a great introduction for kids who might want to participate in that program.”
He said the Junior Air Rifle program also offers a way for participants to potentially develop an interest in a lifelong sport. “Marksmanship is one of the few sports where

Agnes
“These are questions like, ‘Is there a God? Do I believe?’ These questions are relevant today. As a society, we’re seeing a loss of faith, a loss of organized religion. This show gives audiences the opportunity to examine the driving forces behind that.”
“Agnes of God” is a threewoman show. The cast features Lydia Alkinburgh as Agnes; Susan Kresge as Miriam Ruth, the Mother Superior; and Nelly Torres as Dr. Martha Livingstone. It tells the story of Agnes, a young nun, who has given birth but claims it was an immaculate conception. “Dr. Livingstone is a psychiatrist trying to get to the bottom of this mystery,” said Enriquez.
Alkinburgh described her character as innocent and sheltered. “She’s very youngjust 21 - and she’s very childlike,” she noted. “She doesn’t know much about the world.”
Kresge said her character is torn between wanting to know the truth of what happened and struggling with that truth. She’s also a lonely person. “She has some emptiness in her life,
and Agnes fills some of those holes,” Kresge noted.
As a doctor, Torres’ character struggles with her faith. “She relies on logic,” Torres stated. “In her mind, everything can be explained by reason. … She has walls up and tries to mask her vulnerability and her own struggle with faith.”
For this show, Enriquez cast two understudies - Natalie Beckman for Dr. Livingstone and Tac Tacelosky for Miriam Ruth. Tacelosky will perform the role at the matinee performance on Sunday, Oct. 23.
Enriquez explained that using understudies was not only a necessity in the age of COVID uncertainty but also a deliberate choice. “This show offers these really plum roles for actresses, so I wanted to bring in even more women to the production,” she said.
The show has provided a unique rehearsal experience, said Erin Vago, who is the stage manager. “There’s something valuable about it being all women,” she noted. “There’s the ability to be that certain level of vulnerable
that this show needs.”
Tacelosky emphasized that the show may leave audiences with a lot to think about. “I envision car rides home with lots of questions and people wanting to hash things out,” she said.
“Agnes of God” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, Oct. 21 and 28; Saturdays, Oct. 22 and 29; and Thursday, Oct. 27. It will also be performed at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Oct. 23 and 30. Susquehanna Stage is located at 133 W. Market St., Marietta. For more information, visit www.susquehannastage.com.

As far as regular season performances go, the girls volleyball team’s 2022 regular season is pretty darn good. The Lady Bears sport a 14-1 mark and that does not include a title run at the Big Spring Invite as well as runner-up finishes at both the Black Knight Invite and Cumberland Valley’s Rally in the Valley.
In fact, E-town even avenged their sole loss, which was to Ephrata on September 13th, with a 3-0 sweep on October 6th. Paige Horst had a whopping 31 digs in the 25-19, 25-18 and 25-17.
“The game came down to defense and Paige stepped up and refused to not let anything drop, said head coach Karina Shelly.
Hailey Oller tallied 35
E-town Volleyball Team Sits at 14-1
assists and Liz Kerin 13 kills.
The Lady Bears continued to roll on the 10th, posting another 3-0 sweep, this one over Garden Spot. Horst finished with 15 digs while Oller had 33 assists and three aces.
Kerin notched 14 kills.
Elizabethtown’s next sweep victim was Solanco on the 11th where scores of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-10 left little doubt. Oller led the way with 20 assists, nine digs and four aces. Chloe Merkt added 12 kills.
FIELD HOCKEY
The Lady Bear field hocky team moved a bit closer to locking up a District 3-2A berth with wins over Cedar Crest and Manheim Central, pushing their overall mark to 11-6.
Of course, an October 7th loss to Red Land did not help the cause. Reagan Flory put Etown up in the first with help
from Mikaela Condran, but Red Land would put two on the board in the third for the 2-1 victory. Sydney Pope kept busy, finishing with 15 saves.
Elizabethtown bookended that loss with wins, starting with a 2-1 win over Cedar Crest on the 6th. Pope needed six saves to secure the win thanks to second and third quarter goals. Piper Patrick went solo for that second quarter score while Kendra Griffie used a Lyla Fair feed f or the game winner in the third.
The Lady Bears were able to enjoy their 3-1 win over Manheim Central on the 10th, using two first quarter goals to build a comfy cushion. Condran was up first with Caitlin Steffie providing the feed while Fair set up Patrick for an early 2-0 edge. Condran made it 3-0 with Flory’s help in the third. Pope picked up
the win with four saves but Central was able to break apart the shutout with a fourth quarter score.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
The girls’ soccer team continues to cruise toward the end of their regular season with wins over LampeterStrasburg, Solanco and Garden Spot pushing their overall mark to 13-2. Elizabethtown had little trouble with Lampeter-Strasburg on the 5th, scoring four first-half goals on their way to a 6-1 win. Keegan Miller needed just one save to earn the win thanks to Meiley Shuck and a potent offense. Shuck picked up a goal scoring hat trick while Jena Witters had the assist hat trick. Lily Heistand, Dani Bruno, and Liana Endy covered the remaining goals.
Elizabethtown needed overtime on the 8th but they did manage to slip by Solanco, 4-3. Witters used a Heistand feed for the game winner in overtime while seven Miller saves completed the victory. Witters and Heistand hooked up for E-town third goal only it was Witters feeding Heistand this time. Taryn Hummer put E-town on the board in the f ourth minute while Bruno, with help from Josie Spayd, made it 2-1 midway through the opening half.
The Lady Bears took all the worry out of their October 11th encounter with Cedar Crest early, winning 5-0. Witters left her mark on the game by scoring the opening goal and then setting up Hailey Sheetz just moments later for a quick 2-0 lead. One more assist came in the second half, setting up the first of two Kylie Hein scores. Ava Glick
set up the second Hein score while also enjoying E-town’s third goal. Miller finished with four saves.
BOYS’ SOCCERR
The number 12 has little significance most places but f or the E-town boys’ soccer team that is the winning streak they will carry into the postseason.
“The boys recognize that hard work will be required to have any success in the post season and that the #1 District ranking has placed a target on their backs,” said head coach James Sostack.
The Bears finished that impressive regular season run with wins over LampeterStrasburg and Garden Spot pushing their record to 13-2-1 and earning the Section Two title in the process. It was a team effort against the Pioneers with Jason Stark, Caleb Garcia, Tavan Schoenberger and Hayden Flory, finding the back of the net. That left Tyler Bell with an easy day in goal and the win.
Things went even easier on the 11th with a 4-0 win over Garden Spot.
“That game showed our commitment as a team to secure the title with a dominating first and second half,” Sostack said.
The dominating first half led to a 3-0 cushion thanks to goals by Noah Locke, Dax Kelly and Schoenberger. Kelly added one final score in the 60th minute, giving Flory his third assist of the game. Bell finished with three saves.
FOOTBALL
Undefeated no more. Solanco, courtesy of a 35-32 win on October 7th, knocked E-town from the ranks of the unbeaten, dropping the Bears to 6-1.
As the final would indicate, the game was close with Etown holding a solid 457-373 edge in total yards, but the Golden Mules held the key 2-0 edge in turnovers. The Josh Rudy to Braden Cummings connection would have been the star if not for Solanco’s Brody Mellinger. The senior QB accounted for 174 yards and three touchdowns, including the game winner late in the fourth, to steal the show. Rudy finished with 293 yards and two scores through the air with another 77 yards and one score coming on the ground. Cummings finished with an eyepopping 12 catches for 190 yards and both of those Rudy scores. Logan Lentz added 82 yards and one score to the Bears rushing totals.
TENNIS
The girls’ tennis team played their final matches of 2022 by taking part in the L-L Flight Championship on October 6th, 8th, and 10th. Dasha Gencturk concluded her stellar freshman season with a sixth-place finish in the Flight One Bracket. Gencturk, who earned a firstround bye, slipped a win over Donegal’s Kensington Edmond between losses to Haley Miller (Manheim Township) and Hempfield’s Sophia Carson. Gencturk also snagged a few postseason honors, with her

In his new role, he’s been putting his background in strategic planning to use holding focus groups with volunteers, students who come to Cornerstone and students who don’t, parents, community members and ministry partners. “We want to gather as much information as we can on what’s going on in the community and how we can best serve everyone,” he stated.
Cornerstone Youth Center offers programming for students in middle school through high school. Kids who come to the center can take advantage of everything from games to homework help, counseling, Bible lessons and a hot meal.
Jim said the youth center faces a few challenges that he plans to tackle head-on, including finding volunteers and raising funds for programming.
“I’m honored to work with the staff and volunteers we have here,” he stated. “They are very committed. We’re always looking for more help, for volunteers who believe in God and the Gospel and believe in helping and teaching students.”
As for fundraising, Jim will spearhead the youth center’s participation in the ExtraGive in November. “We’re doing a lock-in for students, and then we have board members and volunteers who will be in ‘jail’ here at the center,” he said. “They will have to raise enough
money to be bailed out.”
When he’s not working, Jim enjoys spending time with his family, which includes Michelle and their five children. He’s also an avid Eagles fan, and he loves to travel with his wife.
He’s excited to see what the future brings for his role at Cornerstone. “I love being invested in the students’ lives,” he said. “I love helping them discover who they are and who they can be.”
For more information on Cornerstone Youth Center or to volunteer, call the office at 717-367-0000.
The Elizabethtown/Mount Joy Christian Women’s Connection invites area ladies to its “Rags to Riches” brunch, to be held on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 9:30 a.m. at Cornerstone Youth Center, 95 S. Wilson Ave., Elizabethtown. The set price is inclusive.
Sue Martin from Elizabethtown will share gift ideas, including suggestions for Christmas. The speaker will be Julie Henning from Souderton, who was born in South Korea and raised by author Pearl S. Buck.

The group formed in 1935, featuring farmer D.P. Carter
along with his son, Ernest, and daughters, Lola and Effie. It began as a way to spread the Word while also raising money for medicine for Effie, who had pneumonia. The group began singing on local radio in Lubbock, Texas, that year. As it grew in popularity, the Chuck Wagon Gang started recording for the American Record Corporation in 1936 before the group’s contract and master recordings were purchased by Columbia Records.
Over the years, the band has sold millions of records and songbooks and has experienced numerous personnel changes while retaining ties to the original quartet. Current owner, manager, and alto singer Shaye Smith is the granddaughter of original alto Anna “Effie” Carter and of Howard Gordon, who played electric and acoustic guitar for the Chuck Wagon Gang in the 1950s and ’60s. The quartet still performs with accompaniment from only one guitar, now played by Darrell Morris.
In addition to Smith and Morris, the current lineup includes Melissa Kemper, Josh Garner, and Scotty Owenby.

Apprentices Earn Opportunity To Compete At National Event
Three ABC Keystone apprentices received top scores at the Keystone Chapter’s individual local craft competition on Oct. 1, which was held at the chapter’s state-of-the-art training facility in Manheim. This year, the competition also featured the chapter’s first-ever team competition designed to demonstrate safety along with craft interdependency and teamwork; simulate working conditions, where planning is critical to success; highlight individual leadership and workmanship skills as the project was assembled and completed; and encourage apprentices to work through problems as a team.
The top scorers will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the upcoming ABC National Craft Competition (NCC) to be held from Wednesday, March 15, through Friday, March 17, 2023, in Kissimmee, Fla. At the NCC, they will compete against
craftspeople from ABC’s 68 chapters nationwide. The local craft competition is made possible through the support of ABC Keystone Chapter members.
The competition was open to the public and was attended by family members and friends of
the apprentices as well as the members of the Keystone Chapter, which provided the competitors the opportunity to compete in an environment replicating the experience of competing at ABC’s NCC. Competitors had to keep their focus on their craft
and maintain strict attention to safety while working on projects that had been designed to test their practical and problem-solving skills.
The hands-on portion of the individual competition contributed to 75% of their total
score and was judged by construction industry professionals. Individual competitors were not given details of their project build prior to the event. Ahead of the practical trade skills competition, the apprentices were required to take a written test
contributing to the remaining 25% of their total score. During the written test, they proved their academic understanding and knowledge gained throughout their education program. To earn a spot at ABC Keystone’s
