Girl Scouts are giving back

Three girls in Girl Scout Troop 70417 have made the world a better place by earning the highest awards for their level of Girl Scouts. Sophia Kretzing has earned her Bronze Award, and both Keeli Adams and Mya Brouse have earned their Silver Awards.

Sophia, the daughter of Keith and Erika Kretzing of Mount Joy, is an eighth-grader at Elizabethtown Area Middle School. “I built a Little Free Library for the community,” Sophia explained. “It is located at the GEARS center on Poplar Street. I also held a book drive to fill the library when we opened it.”

Sophia has been a Girl Scout for seven years and is currently a Cadette, but she earned the Bronze Award as a Junior Girl Scout. The Bronze Award is the highest award Junior Girl Scouts - members in grades four and five - can earn. “I wanted to do my Bronze Award to give me a chance to work on my leadership skills,” Sophia shared. “I also enjoy helping the community, and I think a library is a great way to do that.”

Keeli and Mya worked together to earn their Silver Award, the highest award available for

Cadette Girl Scouts - those in sixth through eighth grades.

“We built benches that convert into tables and placed them at the entrance of Conewago Trail so that when people were finished

with their bike ride, walk, etc., they had a place to rest or enjoy a snack,” Keeli said of the project she and Mya completed in early summer 2023.

Breast cancer group thrives thanks to community support

As a breast cancer survivor, Kim Ramirez knows firsthand what it’s like to fight the disease. She also understands what can happen after having cancer.

“I am a 12-year survivor that was diagnosed with lymphedema

four years after completing my treatments,” she said. “I couldn’t get any assistance for the out-ofpocket expenses for therapy or compression garments.”

Determined to support other people in her position, the Bainbridge resident created Ta Ta Rebels, a Pennsylvania-based

David Wilcox will offer an evening of music and storytelling

When American folk singersongwriter David Wilcox entertains at Elizabethtown College, audiences can expect an evening of music and storytelling.

“If you enjoy blues, soul music, rock ‘n’ roll, funk, mellow vibes and fantastic lyrics, David Wilcox is a performer you’ll truly enjoy,” said Jesse Waters, director of Bowers Writers House and community impact

at the college. “David often prefaces his songs with some context that adds backstory to his music, but the concert will be just that - a concert of his songbook, especially his newest album, ‘My Good Friends.’” Wilcox will perform in Gibble Auditorium on the campus, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown, from 8 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1.

“I’ve been a fan of David’s music for almost 30 years, and I very

nonprofit organization that assists breast cancer survivors after treatment. The organization formed in 2016, became a 501(c)(3) in 2018 and has experienced growth and success thanks in large part to community support.

Most recently, Ramirez was able to purchase a new vehicle for the organization. “We started a fundraiser in February of 2024 to replace our 20-year truck,” she shared. “In May, we reached our goal through donations, and, with the assistance of Conoy Car Company, a vehicle was located that met our needs. We needed a vehicle with enough space to carry our event items, had a tow hitch for our trailer and plenty of seating for our volunteers.”

Funds were raised for the vehicle through a meat bingo held at the Columbia VFW. The organization also recently held its Survivors Raise Hope cash and designer purse bingo, raising almost $10,000 to support its programs and services. At the bingo, donations came from several businesses, including Martin’s Snacks, Hershey’s, Roots Beer Distributor and the Sheetz in Mount Joy.

“The success of our events is because of the community support both local and out of our area,” Ramirez said. “We receive

donations from areas such as York, Harrisburg, Carlisle, Enola, Ronks, Hanover, Erie, Mechanicsburg and Thomasville, to name a few. This gives our participants the opportunity to visit other businesses and venues with the gift cards and certificates they win at our (giveaways).”

For the organization’s new vehicle, several local businesses donated to the effort, she noted, including Conoy Car Company, Craig Rothstein State Farm Insurance, Roots Beer Distributor and Linglestown American Legion Sons of the American Legion, Auxiliary and Legion Riders.

“We are also very fortunate to receive support from Elizabethtown and Mount Joy Weis Markets these past few years that includes monetary funds, salads for our events, gift cards and other items,” Ramirez said. “Weis corporate also picked our organization as a recipient of the round-up for local organizations at the checkout registers. This was a tremendous opportunity for our organization. The money raised during this campaign will help many with the out-of-pocket expenses as well as our scar tissue therapy program.”

The scar tissue therapy program began in 2021. “We coordinated with a medically licensed massage

therapist to create our scar tissue release program,” Ramirez said. “We will cover the expense of three sessions to help survivors release scar tissue buildup from surgery to regain their range of motion.”

The organization has also been able to increase the amount of financial assistance offered to survivors, with plans to increase it again in 2025.

“A portion of the funds raised supports our outreach events as well as the administrative cost to run a nonprofit,” Ramirez said. “We are an all-volunteer organization, so there are no salaries paid. Most of our funds cover the expenses of our requests for financial assistance, our scar tissue program and

other supported programs. There are many great organizations that assist while you’re at the beginning of your journey. We are the only organization that assists the survivor.”

Looking ahead, Ramirez is optimistic about the continued success of the organization. “We are going into our ninth year and have helped over 150 women with assistance and resources,” she said. “This is a much needed and appreciated organization.”

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.

Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.

Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country:

1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.

2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.

3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

Sincerely,

David Wilcox

This led to winning the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival in 1988 and a four-album stint with A&M Records, starting with 1989’s “How Did You Find Me Here,” which sold 100,000 copies by word of mouth.

Crafts, food and thrifty finds at Zion Lutheran bazaar

When the organizers of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church bazaar say they have something for everyone, they’re not kidding.

“If you enjoy going to craft fairs, we have something for you. If you have a sweet tooth, we have something for you,” said organizer Mary Ann Eshleman. “If you like yard sales, we have something for you. If you don’t feel like cooking dinner, we have something for you. You can pick up some new decorations

for your home, buy Christmas gifts, eat your lunch here and take home dinner and dessert and feel good because your money is going to a good cause.”

The bazaar will be held at the church, 1290 River Road, Marietta, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1 and 2.

The event will feature food, crafts and white elephant items for sale.

“Handcrafted items are made by a small group of dedicated church members who get together

monthly to create seasonal and decorative items, in addition to some members who make things at home,” Eshleman said. “Some new things that we have this year include: wooden items - cats, snowmen, reversible pumpkin stack and snowman, cardinals, penguins, pillar candles and tree-shaped candle holders.” Other handmade items will include wreaths, floral arrangements, snowman tea light holders and Christmas ornaments, as well as crocheted items such as dish cloths, fun creature hats, amigurumi animals, card baskets and catnip mice. Beaded jewelry, including earrings, bracelets and necklaces, will be for sale, along with paper items such as gift bags, gift tags, memo pads, journals and gift card holders.

“We often try to use recycled materials in our crafts, including wood from pallets, corks, buttons, old Christmas cards, glass yogurt containers and globes from our old candelabras,” Eshleman said.

A white elephant area will feature gently used and reasonably priced books, jigsaw puzzles, seasonal decorations and other treasures.

Food for sale will include homemade baked goods such as breads, cookies and cupcakes; candy; and sweet and salty snacks. Church members will also create cute candy treats such as Hershey bar snowmen and penguins, owls made from caramel creams and miniature chocolate candies, and Tootsie Pop pumpkins and flowers.

“We will sell a variety of soups, including vegetable beef, chicken corn and ham and bean, sold cold by the quart, and hamburger and pork barbecue by the pint,” Eshleman shared. “For the first time since 2019, we will have a dining area with a menu of hot dog and meatball sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, chips and drinks.”

Proceeds from the bazaar will be split between the church’s elevator fund and its outreach

A musical about successful and would-be murderers might seem like a bit of downer, but there are lessons to be learned and even a bit of levity in “Assassins.” The show will be performed at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, on select dates from Friday, Oct. 25, to Sunday, Nov. 3. “The show is about a group of both successful and attempted

presidential assassins telling their story and going through vignettes with the details of their lives, details of the specific acts they committed and how they all tie into each other and tie into the fabric of America,” said Sean Reynolds, who portrays John Wilkes Booth in the musical.

“It’s a story about the collective idea of what America is.”

Written by Stephen Sondheim, “Assassins” weaves together the stories of nine people, including

well-known assassins Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald, with lesser-known subjects such as Charles Guiteau, Leon Czolgosz and Samuel Byck.

Reynolds said he learned a lot about his character and others in the show while researching his part. “It’s fascinating to think about how you have these really big, watershed figures in American history side by side with someone who the general public doesn’t know,” he shared, “but they all come together in this story.”

America

Given current events, the show is especially relevant, Reynolds said, but he emphasized that audiences will walk away with something no matter when the show is performed.

“This is one of those shows that is simultaneously timely, in that it’s examining all of the things that were going on in the country at these specific times, but the big, overarching themes are so timeless,” he said. “These are themes that have existed as long as the country has existed.”

Meagan Mapson, who portrays Sara Jane Moore, a woman who attempted to assassinate Gerald Ford, said the subject of the show may seem surprising, but the musical offers an opportunity to learn more about important moments in America’s history.

“The show doesn’t glorify what they’ve done, but you get a sense of what their motivation was, why they did what they did,” she said. “Everyone has their own version of the American Dream, and to me, the assassins also have that American Dream, but they pursue it in a very different and not-so-acceptable way.”

Reynolds said the show focuses on connection and how most people are just looking to belong, and although the topic of the show is serious, there are moments of comedy on stage.

“We are all looking for a way to connect, to be heard, to feel like we belong, whether that’s just to one other person, to a family, to a peer group, to society at large,” he shared. “This group of people has a very wide range of reasons why they do the things they do, but they are all connected in this way.”

Ethan Reimel, who portrays Giuseppe Zangara, president-elect Franklin Roosevelt’s would-be

assassin, said he enjoyed learning more about his character, including how Zangara had undiagnosed medical problems that caused severe pain as well as post-traumatic stress disorder from serving in the Italian army during World War I.

“Because these were real people, there’s so much to draw from when you’re creating the character,” Reimel said.

“Assassins” premiered off Broadway in 1990 to mixed reviews, and the show was set for a revival in 2001. That revival was postponed following the events of 9/11, Mapson noted, but when it was

and Brianne Adams of Elizabethtown, is a sophomore at Elizabethtown Area High School. She’s been a Girl Scout for eight years, and she encourages other girls to strive for their level’s highest award, which includes the Girl Scout Gold Award for girls in high school.

“It’s a great way to find things that could be improved or that would benefit your community, and you feel very accomplished once you earn the award,” she said.

Mya revealed that getting started on the project with Keeli required a bit of brainstorming about needs in their community.

“We felt that the trail -

head needed a resting place, as there was a wide area by the parking but nowhere to sit,” she said. “Next, we came up with a plan of action that started by contacting various local businesses and asking if they could donate the needed supplies - wood, nails, glue, stain, etc.”

The girls then spent a week working in Keeli’s grandfather’s garage to construct the two benches.

“We loaded up the benches in a truck and met two park and recreation employees to set them up,” Mya recalled. “We spent about 50 hours on the project, from brainstorming to setting up at the trail.”

Dennis and Maria Brouse of Mount Joy. She is a sophomore at Donegal High School. She’s been a Girl Scout since she was in kindergarten, and, like both Sophia and Keeli, she said she plans to work on her Gold Award next.

“As a Girl Scout, one of our core values is giving back to the community,” she remarked. “I plan to find a project that incorporates helping animals. I would like to be a veterinarian as a future career.”

All three girls are part of the Elizabethtown/Donegal Service Unit of Girl Scouts, and their troop is led by Tracy Adams and Brianne Adams. The girls encourage anyone who

is interested to consider joining Girl Scouts, noting that the program provides opportunities to hone leadership skills and take positive risks.

“I love that we are always learning new things and going to new places,” Sophia said, and Mya added that she enjoys the opportunities Girl Scouts has given her to grow in confidence.

For Keeli, Girl Scouts has introduced her to a wide circle of friends.

“One of my favorite things are the friendships I’ve gained from being in Girl Scouts,” she said. “A lot of the girls I’ve known from the start, and we have become super close.”
