Whenthe people of Elizabethtown want something, LIV-ETown works hard to make it happen. That’s the case with the Not Too Scary HalloweEtown Parade, happening on Sunday, Oct. 30. The parade will begin assembling at 4 p.m. and will step off at 5:30 p.m.

“ We had a lot of people in the community reaching out to us last year about how awesome it would be to have a Halloween parade in Etown,” said Tony Gibble, owner of The Tatted Toy Guys Toy Emporium. “Growing up in Manheim, I remember there was a costume parade coinciding with the Farm Show made up of businesses and people in the community and (I) had

always loved it.” A parade seemed like a perfect project for LIV-ETown, he said, and a new partnership with Jesse Waters, director of community impact at Elizabethtown College,

“This parade is a wonderful way to experience harmony between the Elizabethtown College institution and wonderful community organizations such as LIV-ETown.”

brought LIV-ETown and the college together to get the event up and running for its inaugural year.

The parade will cover a route through town, Waters said, adding, “The best viewing would be along

Mount Joy Street from the Fun Fort grass area to College Avenue and from College Avenue to the Hoover parking lot at the college, 701 E. College Ave.”

Clint Gibble, owner of The Candy Unicornium, emphasized that participants are encouraged to come in costume and noted that there will be eight categories of parade entries. “Each one has an award waiting to go to the ‘Best of’ per category,” Clint shared. The categories will be ages 1 to 5, ages 6 to 10, ages 11 to 14, age 15 and up, couples, organizations/groups, best on wheels (such as wheelchairs, bikes or ATVs) and vehicles/floats. “The judging will be by the Elizabethtown College president, Betty Rider; Scott LaMar of WITF; and Elizabethtown’s mayor, Chuck Mummert,” Clint said.

EAHS Will Present “Peter And The Starcatcher”

Imagination will take center stage when Elizabethtown Area High School presents its fall play, “Peter and the Starcatcher.” The show will be performed at the high school, 600 E. High St., at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3, and at 1 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5.

“This show is a prequel to ‘Peter Pan,’” explained Elyse Hayden, a senior who portrays Molly Aster in

the play. “It’s a very fun show, full of magic, comedy and drama. It’s enjoyable for everyone watching.”

“Peter and the Starcatcher” tells the story of a young orphan sent on a ship bound for a distant island. Along the way, he encounters Molly, a Starcatcher-in-training, who is searching for magical “star stuff,” with a mission of preventing it from getting into the wrong hands, including the greedy pirate Black Stache.

Will Hold Fall Festival

We have fun, creative activities planned for everyone,” said Miranda Heistand, who is helping to organize the Rissers Mennonite Church Fall Festival. “Come enjoy food, fellowship, games, activities and experience parts of the Bible on display.” The Fall Festival will be held at the church, 8360 Elizabethtown Road, Elizabethtown, on Saturday, Oct. 29, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Brendan Fritz, a sophomore who plays the Boy/Peter, said the show is unique for many reasons. “It’s classified as a play, but it’s really an odd hybrid of a play and musical,” he said, noting that music plays a big part in the show. “Overall, it’s a comedy, and it’s fun to watch.”

Scott Creason, a sophomore who portrays Black Stache, said another unique part of the show is its minimal set. “We are the set,” he noted of the cast members, who remain on stage for the entire show. “So much of the set is based on imagination. We also break the fourth wall a lot and talk to the audience.”

Rounding out the cast of 14 are Owen Wagner, Kacy Hartmann, Jacqui Anderton, Liam

Custom

Burke, Olivia Gable, Joshua Coble, Will Bonsall, Taylor Krebs, Josie Sirinides, Alexa Landon and Ellie Smith. Many of the actors play multiple parts, including sailors, orphans, pirates, mermaids, mollusks, ships, doors, scenery and narrators.

Scott added that the play promises to be entertaining. “It’s a high-energy show,” he said. “The cast is always doing something on stage, always being very active. We have a lot of fun together on stage. The show is always moving, and there is always something to watch.”

Tickets for “Peter and the Starcatcher” will be sold at the door or may be ordered online by searching for “Elizabethtown Area High School” at www.showtix4u.com.

Fall Festival

“We’ve really tried to make sure we have activities for all ages, from young people to older people,” said Tiffany Landis, a member of the Connections Committee at the church. “If you’ve been to our fall events in the past, this year will be totally different.”

The church has held fall gatherings in the past, but this year, the committee members added a new twist with a variety of stations. The Fall Festival will feature games and activities, including pumpkin painting, pumpkin bingo, a puzzle station, snacks and a campfire. “This year we are offering a substitute for trick-or-treat night as we feature a Trunk or Treat event, where vehicle trunks will be decorated with a Bible story theme,” said outreach chair Arlene Heistand.

The Fall Festival will conclude with a concert by Ironwood Drive Band,

which will perform in the church sanctuary at 7 p.m. The band performs a mix of traditional and gospel bluegrass music.

With the exception of the concert, the Fall Festival activities will take place outside due to construction at the church. In the event of rain, the activities will be postponed until Saturday, Nov. 5, but the concert will be held on Oct. 29, rain or shine.

The festival is an opportunity for the church members to reach out to the community, said pastor

Daryl Heistand. “We look forward to getting to know our neighbors and friends while enjoying some fall-themed events,” he remarked. “We feel it’s important to get the community together and share the love of Jesus with those around us, and this event gives us a chance to do that.”

Risser Mennonite Church holds Sunday school for children and adults at 9 a.m., followed by the worship service at 10 a.m. For more information on the Fall Festival, call 717-653-4549.

From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., 16 groups from Elizabethtown College will offer a Trunk or Treat event at the end of the parade route in the Hoover parking lot, Waters said. “HalloweE-town Parade guests may also follow the path from Hoover parking to the quad, where 20 businesses will be set up to offer additional trick-ortreating,” he stated.

Along with offering a fun way to celebrate Halloween, the parade and other activities represent a focus on collaboration, Waters said. “This parade is a wonderful way to experience harmony between the Elizabethtown College institution and wonderful community organizations such as LIV-ETown,” he remarked. “We’re hoping folks take note of this and will look for future collaborations between the college and different community members and groups.”

People can still sign up to participate in the parade, Clint said. Spots are limited for vehicles, so advance registration is requested, but individuals or groups wanting to walk in the parade can register the day of the event from 4 to 5 p.m. at Pavilion 2 in the Elizabethtown Borough Park, 201 S. Mount Joy St. To preregister, email LIVetownevents@gmail.com. The parade committee is also looking for community members who would like to volunteer. For more information on volunteering, email writers house@etown.edu.

Create Columbia wants to make the river town a Halloween destination. The group, whose mission is to promote the arts in Columbia, will host two Halloweenthemed events on Saturday, Oct. 29, and Sunday, Oct. 30. On Oct. 29, the group will host a vendor event in the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., from noon to 2 p.m. The event will showcase antique and vintage Halloween decorations, with a collector on hand to discuss the items and answer questions. The next day, Oct. 30, the second annual Halloween House Tour will be featured. It will run from 3 to 8 p.m. and will consist of four private homes and four public properties.

“This is not a scary tour,” said Kay Leader, a member of Create Columbia. “It’s an opportunity to see Halloween decorations and maybe get some inspiration for your own house.”

Tour-goers may proceed through the route at their own pace and in any order. Two venues will have limited

hours during the tour. Mount Bethel Cemetery, located at 700 Locust St., will offer mini tours from 3 to 6:30 p.m. and will be open for exploration until 7 p.m. Art Printing Co., 131 Locust St., will be part of the tour from 3 to 6 p.m. Both venues are also participating in the Haunted Lantern Tour, which will run concurrently to the house tour.

Additional sites on the house tour include the Columbia School of Music, the

Columbia Market House and a variety of homes that will be decorated for the holiday.

Leader noted that last year’s inaugural tour was wellreceived. “I’m still getting positive feedback and still hearing good things about last year’s tour,” she stated.

Denise Brubaker, a member of Create Columbia who participated in the first tour, will again open her home this year. She and her husband, Gary, are Halloween enthusi-

asts who keep a downstairs room decorated for the holiday year-round.

“I like this tour, because all of the stops are different,”

Lady Booters Fall Short Against Cedar Crest

The girls’ soccer team rolled through the majority of the 2022 regular season, building a flashy 13-2 record with their only losses coming to Section Two champ, Ephrata. Or at least that was the case until October 13th when Cedar Crest came for a visit and left with a 3-1 victory, dropping E-town to 13-3.

Andrea Rodriguez picked up the lone Lady Bear score,

knotting the game at 1-1 in the 61st minute. That ended up a blip in the game as two late Lady Falcon goals gave the visitors a 3-1 win. Keegan Miller finished with two saves while Marissa Polites added six more.

That loss may have altered Elizabethtown’s District 3-4A seed but it did not stop the Lady Bears from making the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship tournament. That sent E-town to Myer-

stown on October 15th for a showdown with ELCO, the winner out of Section Three. The trip did not go as planned, with ELCO sending E-town home after a 5-0 loss. Miller went solo in goal and finished with five saves.

BOYS’ SOCCER

The Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship tournament proved to be unforgiving for Elizabethtown soccer. The Lady Bears dropped their quarterfinal tilt two days after the boy’s side met the same fate, a quarterfinal loss, snapping their 13-game winning streak.

“It was a setback for us having won 13 games in a row,” said head coach James Sostack of the quarterfinal loss. “The lesson is maintain your hunger and desire right from the first whistle.”

Cocalico front loaded their game plan leading to two quick strikes and a 2-0 cushion. That would stand until the 70th minute when Juan Lopez found the net to cut the deficit in half. Elizabethtown was unable to strike again, derailing the Bears L-L title hopes. Tyler Bell finished with six saves.

“While Etown lost the opportunity to win a league title they can learn the lessons of this defeat and recommit to a run in districts,” said Sostack who remained positive after the loss.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team wrapped up their regular season

on October 12th, playing Ephrata to a 0-0 draw, leaving the Lady Bears 11-6-1. Sydney Pope turned away eight shots while keeping the Lady Mountaineers off the board.

That 11-6-1 overall record includes a 6-3-1 run through Section Two, good enough for second place and a spot in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship opposite Garden Spot. Pope finished with nine saves but the Lady Spartans were able to score twice, leading to a 2-1 setback for Elizabethtown. Piper Patrick picked up the lone goal in the fourth quarter, busting up the Spot shutout bid.

VOLLEYBALL

The girls’ volleyball team wrapped up their regular season as well, topping Lebanon 3-0 on the 13th. E-town posted wins of 25-11, 25-21 and 25-13.

CROSS COUNTRY

If the calendar reads late October then it is time for the cross-country team to travel to Ephrata for the 2022 League Championship which took place on October 18th this year. Both sides posted a fifth-place finish in their respective team standings but the boy’s side was able to squeeze all five of their scoring runners in the top 50.

Jaycen Conrad led that effort with his 26th place time of 17:30.0. Jack Myers finished three seconds later and in 30th place while Jackson Key posted a 17:33.1 to take 31st. Nicholas Mascia was up next, finishing 36th with a time of 17:47.4. The final Bear scorer was Bradley Kreider who claimed 50th place with a time of 18:06.7.

On the girls’ side, Jordan DiRisio led the way, missing the top 10 by approximately two seconds, her 20:18.6 slotting her 13th. Ali Fink crossed the finish line at 20:39.3, good enough for 24th place. Lilah Drager claimed 35th with a time of 21:15.1 while Rowan Hess came in 44th with a time of 21:35.1.

Jillian Wivell rounded out the scoring five with a 64th place run of 22:13.8.

FOOTBALL

The football team rebounded nicely from the first loss of the 2022 season, throttling Fleetwood, 42-16. The Bears finished with 434 yards but only 90 came via the ground with Josh Rudy lighting up the Fleetwood defense for 365 yards and six touchdown passes in the air.

Five different Bears were on the receiving end of those Rudy strikes with Braden

Cummings doubling up despite just three catches. He covered 122 yards over those three catches. Brady Breault snagged 10 passes for 70 yards and a score while Ian Brosey hit paydirt on his only catch, covering 35 yards. Owen Dommel accounted for Elizabethtown’s final score and 63 yards on his two catches. Logan Lentz missed joining the 1000-yard club after finishing with 54 yards, but he did add three catches for 48 yards and Rudy’s final TD toss.

Celebrate Fall At An Artisan Festival

Attend the Creatively Lancaster Artisan Fall Festival, and you can enjoy shopping, f ood, music and more. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30, at High Cross Farm, 1610 Landis Road, Mount Joy. Girl Crush Company and Second Grace will partner with Creatively Lancaster for the festival, with proceeds benefiting Second Grace, a nonprofit organization that supports at-risk single moms.

We currently have more than 70 makers scheduled for display both in our restored vintage barn and outside in the courtyard and yard,” said Candace Abel, chief maker of Girl Crush and president and founder of Second Grace. “We have everything from personal care to home items for sale, body products to soothe, honey for your tea and chocolates for those moments you want to de-stress. We have beautiful photographs, handcrafted signs and candles to make your house homey. There are several jewelry makers, T-shirt makers and potters. We have fiber arts and wood arts.”

Along with vendors, the event will feature food and coffee trucks outside, as well as children’s activities. “Children can play in the children’s area where they can paint and take a fun pumpkin for a small donation to Second

Grace,” Abel stated. “We also have a fun tractor ride for the kids to enjoy while the parents shop.” Live music from Sound of Roses will be featured on Oct. 29 from 2 to 3 p.m., and a bonfire will be onsite as well. A selfie station will be set up for visitors to upload a photo to social media and enter to win a gift basket filled with items donated from the vendors.

Abel noted that Creatively Lancaster and Second Grace have collaborated for a number of years, with Girl Crush products sold at Creatively Lancaster’s makers markets, which are held throughout the county. Girl Crush is a bath and body products company Abel started in 2017. Women in the Second Grace program have the opportunity to work at Girl

Crush as part of the program.

“I loved the mission of the organization,” said Steph Mayer, owner of Creatively Lancaster, who noted that the first Artisan Fall Festival was held in 2021 after Abel offered the farm that houses Girl Crush as the venue.

Mayer encourages everyone to attend the Artisan Fall Festival. “If you’re looking to do something fun on a fall weekend, our market has it all, and it goes to support an awesome nonprofit that benefits our community,” she stated. “Plus, it’s never too early to start shopping for the holidays.”

For more information on the Artisan Fall Festival, search for “Creatively Lancaster” on Facebook. For more information on Second Grace, visit https://secondgrace.org.

Come Shopping At A Church Bazaar

There is really something for everyone at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church’s bazaar, whether you’re looking for f ood, homemade crafts or thrift-store treasures, said Mary Ann Eshleman, bazaar organizer. The event will be held on Friday, Nov. 4, and Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 1290 River Road, Marietta.

“For food, we are doing soup and barbecue to go again this year like we did last year,” Eshleman noted. The selection of soups will include ham and bean, vegetable beef and chicken corn,

along with whatever other types church members choose to make. “We’ll have a variety to choose from,” she remarked. “We’ll also have hamburger and pork barbecue, and we always have a lot of baked goods, like cookies, candy and snacks. The baked goods are most people’s favorite part of the bazaar. They walk in the door and head straight to them.”

Throughout the year, church members get together about once a month to make craft items for the bazaar. Items for sale will include a variety of wood crafts such as snowmen, sleds and other Christmas decorations, as well

as year-round décor. “Some of our wooden items are made from repurposed wood, including pallets,” Eshleman commented, adding that items also include window frame mirrors, a bench, wall sconces and stools. Other craft items that will be featured include crocheted stuffed animals, hats, scarves and an afghan, as well as beaded jewelry, notebooks and ornaments.

A white elephant area of the bazaar will feature a little of everything, Eshleman said. “There’s usually a big section of jigsaw puzzles and books,” she said. “There’s lots of miscellaneous variety and lots of good bargains.”

Half of the proceeds from the bazaar will go toward the church’s elevator fund, and half will support outreach ministries, including the East Donegal/Conoy Area Christian Food Bank, school supplies for local students and programs for local senior citizens.

Eshleman said the bazaar is not just a fundraiser but also a way for the church to connect with the community. “We like to give back, and we like putting on an event that promotes good fellowship,” she shared. “The bazaar also involves everybody in our congregation in some way, from making crafts to making food to helping during the event.”

Sheetz Receives Athletic Honor

Pennsylvania College of Technology junior Kaelynn Sheetz of Elizabethtown was named United East Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week two weeks in a row. The announcements were made on Sept. 26 and Oct. 3. Sheetz is a forward.

During the first week, Sheetz registered 16 points on the week, as her Wildcat team finished with a 2-1-1 record. All of her points came over the two-game weekend slate as she notched back-to-back hat tricks. In the win over Gallaudet, Sheetz tucked away three while assisting on two others. She then mirrored that stat line in the win over Gwynedd Mercy the following day.

Sheetz then helped propel her team to a 1-1-0 week. She scored two goals in a critical win over St. Mary’s College of Maryland over the weekend, including the goal that would be the eventual game-winner.

Sheetz is the daughter of Jason and Wendy Sheetz of Elizabethtown.

She graduated from Elizabethtown Area High School in 2020. At Penn College, she is majoring in nursing. She started playing soccer in the GEARS Iddy Biddy program, then in the intramural program through Rheems Athletic Association. By age 9, she was playing on the Rheems Athletic travel team, and at the U13 level, she started playing on a Hershey travel team. She played soccer for the Elizabethtown Area Middle School and High School varsity teams and played one year for the Women’s Premier Soccer League for Hershey FC before heading to college.
