SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

Honoring their service BY CATHY MOLITORIS

VOL LXIV • NO 38

“I

believe it is our civic duty to give back not only to the community but to our country,” said Greg Hitz, who initiated an effort to install banners honoring members of the military in Elizabethtown. Hitz, who served in the Air Force from 1965 to 1969, began advocating for the banners during his first term as president of the Elizabethtown Lions Club in 2018. Then the pandemic hit, and the plan paused, but now it’s moving forward. “The project went to the front burner and, working with the Elizabethtown Borough, Mount Joy Township, members of the Rotary Club and members of the community, it became a reality,” he said.

SINCE

Gazing out over a field of flags, Tom Campbell always gets emotional. “It’s breathtaking to me,” he said of the display he helps to install yearly at Masonic Village in honor of Veterans Day. “It’s an honor to be part of the program and give something back.” The display - called the Massing of the Colors - features more than 7,000 flags. Some are American flags and others are Pennsylvania

state flags, representing fallen military members from the state. The flags serve as a memorial to all military service members who have died in combat since the terrorist attacks of 9/11. The display will be open to the public in Veterans Grove on the campus of Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown, from Saturday, Nov. 4, through Monday, Nov. 13. The Veterans Grove is located just past the main entrance along Masonic Drive, on the left. See Flags pg 2

“We are honoring any military veteran, no matter where they live or where they were born.”

Show will highlight heritage crafts

Banners are being installed throughout Elizabethtown to honor military service.

The second subcommittee installs the banners and comprises members of the Rotary Club and the Lions Club. Hitz noted that Rotarian Glen Bootay, owner of Waste Hauler Support Services, has been instrumental in the project, supplying equipment and manpower to install the banners. “He has worked tirelessly to perfect the hanging of the banners to the point that it only takes approximately 15 minutes to install one banner,” Hitz remarked, noting that Waste Hauler employee Matt Swartz has also been instrumental in the installation project.

The current agreement with Elizabethtown Borough and Mount Joy Township is to install banners from the Elizabethtown square, moving north and south on Market Street and east and west on High Street. “Future expansion could include West Donegal Township and other streets within the borough,” Hitz said. He noted that although the banners will be placed in the Elizabethtown area, people do not need to have been born or raised there to be featured on a banner. “We are honoring any military veteran, no matter where they live or where they were born,” he said.

“We may be a smaller craft show, but we are excited about our diverse vendor lineup this year,” said Malinda Miller, digital media manager for the Winters Heritage House Museum. The site will host its annual Elizabethtown Heritage Craft Show on Friday, Nov. 10, from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown.

See Honoring pg 5

“The Elizabethtown Heritage Craft Show offers the unique opportunity to shop quality handcrafted items in Elizabethtown’s historic log homes,” Miller noted. “There’s something for everyone, even your furry friend.” Vendors will sell a diverse selection of items, including jellies and jams, tarts and pastries by Manchester Teas & Tarts, hand-forged iron pieces, lathe turnings, stained glass, soap, candles, home décor, jewelry, dog treats, paper crafts and doll

The banners are 29 inches wide by 60 inches long and are made of a high-quality canvas material. Each banner features a photo of the veteran as well as the branch he or she served in and the years served. “The response has been outstanding,” Hitz noted. “We currently have 60 banners in hand, some of which are already in place, with the rest to be installed as time and weather permits. We have 30 more banners in production and are working on the next set of 30 banners.” He emphasized that the project would not be possible without the support of two subcommittees. “One is our Pole Cat Committee, made up of members of the community and the Lions Club,” he explained. “Their focus is to identify utility poles that are acceptable for a banner.”

Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Nov. 7, from 9 to 10:45 a.m. The speaker will be Eleanor Isaacson. She was born in the U.S., and at age 2, she was taken to Germany and left there with a widowed aunt. Isaacson lived in Germany throughout the Hitler regime, experiencing bombings,

invasions and starvation. At age 13, she returned alone to the U.S. and reunited with her mother. Since that time, Eleanor has had many careers, such as professional singer, fashion model and insurance agent. She also is an artist, a fashion designer, a home decorator and a gourmet cook. Classes will be provided for children from infants through prekindergartners. Readers Eleanor Isaacson may contact Bonnie at 717361-2613 or Veronica at 717- and a copy of this year’s 626-7603 for more information schedule.

Flags from pg 1 People are invited to walk through and view the display at their leisure, and the site will be lit for nighttime viewing. “When you see the display at night, it’s really something,” Campbell said, noting that tower lights are used to illuminate the field. “I think seeing it at night is the most impressive view.” The Massing of the Colors is a project of the National Sojourners - Harrisburg Chapter 76. The organization created the memorial in 2004 and has displayed the flags as Masonic Village since 2011. Volunteers from Masonic

member of the Sojourners and chair of the Massing of the Colors. “When I took over in 2011, I took the ball and ran with it.” The Sojourners create a similar display at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville for Memorial Day, and Campbell noted that both that project and the one in Elizabethtown require teamwork to accomplish. “I don’t do this on my own,” he said, explaining the project begins each year with people laying out a grid a few days before the installation of the flags so volunteers know where to place them. “There are so many volunteers who assist along the way to make this happen.” Campbell said no matter how many times he’s seen the display, it always makes an impact. “I like to say to people, ‘When you look over that field, and you see those flags waving, it’s not the wind blowing them,” he said. “‘It’s the veteran waving back to you.’”

“The coleslaw is homemade, and it’s so good,” said Marcia Brooks, another member of the event committee. A limited number of homemade apple dumplings, both regular and sugar-free, will be available to purchase while supplies last as well. On Saturday, chicken corn soup, hamburger barbecue, hot dogs, chips and drinks will be sold. Free hot dogs will be available for children age 10 and under. The event will also feature a variety of baked goods made by church members. “These are very popular,” Brooks said. “You can buy a whole pie or just a slice. A lot of people come for dinner and then pick up something for dessert.” Along with pies, church members will make crisped rice treats and fudge, and a congregant from South Africa will make a milk tart. to have the bench installed on school property in the Donegal School District once he has district approval. “ We also have plans to start a scholarship in his name,” Miller noted, adding that Glen would appreciate influencing the future of Donegal students for years to come. Glen was married to his wife, Joanne, for 52 years. They had two children and two grandchildren. Outside of his position as a music teacher, he was a member of the Elizabethtown Lions Club, Ashara-Casiphia Lodge 551 and Elizabethtown’s

Encore Band at Masonic Villages, among other organizations. He was also a life member of the Hershey Region Antique Automobile Club of America and the Pennsylvania State Education Association. Miller added that the Donegal Alumni Band is always seeking new members, and he encourages people who are interested to reach out through the group’s Facebook page by searching for “Donegal HS Alumni Band - DAB.” For more information on the placement of the bench, follow Donegal School District on Facebook.

In 1966, Glen Leib began teaching in the Donegal School District. For the next 33 years, he influenced countless students with his enthusiasm and passion for music. He directed the concert band and marching band, taking his students on performance trips in Mexico City, Quebec, Nashville, Orlando and the Gimbels Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. He was also heavily involved with the Donegal Alumni Band. When Glen passed away in July at the age of 81, a former student and friend decided to honor the man who had made a difference in the lives of so many. Tom Miller, who is a member of the Donegal Alumni Band, helped to form a scholarship committee in

Glen’s name. He also worked to raise money for a bench that was dedicated in Glen’s honor at a Donegal football game earlier this fall. “He was a funny, outgoing guy,” Miller said of Glen. “He was a leader. Many people characterized him as a legend and a friend.” A 1973 Donegal graduate, Miller played trumpet under Glen’s direction. In the Alumni Band, he stayed in touch with his musical mentor and the two became good friends. Miller noted that Glen envisioned the Donegal Alumni Band becoming a large presence in the community. “It was his dream to have 100plus people in the Mount Joy Memorial Day parade,” Miller said. “We’re hoping to make that happen next year.” Miller, who is on a benefit committee with another local organization, said he got the idea for the bench after reading an article in a motorcycle magazine. “It was about benches that could be created in people’s memory,” he recalled. “I found out who makes them, and I thought this would be something we could do to honor Mr. Leib.” He began collecting donations from friends, family and other community members, and he gathered some of Glen’s family together for the bench presentation. He hopes

Dance your cap off at the annual Railroad Museum swing dance

CLASSIFIEDS

BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

Nearly a century later, the trends and styles of those who lived in the early to mid-1900s remain instantly recognizable and deeply appreciated by many throughout the United States. Americans who were born in the first three decades of the 20th century are commonly referred to as the Greatest Generation, and with ample reason: This generation includes the individuals who weathered calamities like the Great Depression and fought in the Second World War. America as we know it was largely shaped by the Greatest Generation. Many people pay tribute to its members by recreating the music, dancing and fashion of their time, including the participants of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s annual swing dance. The museum, which is located on 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will host the event on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets are available to purchase in the museum gift shop and online at https://tinyurl.com/rrm

swingdance. The swing dance will take place in the Rolling Stock Hall of the museum, and it will include live entertainment from Moonlighters Big Band. The Lititz-based musical group performs songs of popular big band artists such as Glenn Miller and Les Brown. Moonlighters Big Band will play music for attendees to boogie to for the duration of the evening, save for a few breaks. During each break, members of the Victrola Dance Hall will demonstrate moves that first-time swing dancers can try out when the music starts back up. Light refreshments will be available during the event. On the same weekend as the swing dance, the museum will host its Trains and Troops program during its normal operating hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 4 and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5. Several exhibitors will set up displays to discuss American military conflicts that were heavily impacted by railroads, from the American Civil War to the

early days of the Gulf War. Many exhibitors will bring military vehicles to display at the museum, and the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard will present a ceremony to salute veterans at 11 a.m. on Saturday and at 1 p.m. on Sunday. In previous years, attendees of both Trains and Troops and the annual swing dance have arrived in periodaccurate attire such as vintage military uniforms. “The weekend is a nice way to celebrate a different aspect of the 1940s, as well as explore

the tie between railroads and the military,” said Elizabeth Myers, program coordinator at the Railroad Museum. “The hall is always nice and full, and the music really makes the building come alive.” The swing dance has continued to grow in popularity since the tradition was started 20 years ago. Last year, the event drew more than 200 participants, the highest number of dancers to attend the swing dance to date. For more information, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org.
