at Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St. Registration will begin at 6:45 a.m., and the 5K will step off at 8:15 a.m. The kids’ run will begin at 9:15 a.m. “We are going to have stuffed turkeys along the route, and participants can look for them,” Wells stated. “If they find one, they’ll bring it back to the finish See Turkey Chase pg 5

Christmas at the Star Barn to highlight holiday wonder BY CATHY MOLITORIS
hristmas at the Star Barn is a magical way to begin the Christmas season - truly like walking into a winter wonderland with the amazingly decorated Star Barn and all the activities,” said Dana Myers, director of charitable giving for Brittany’s Hope. “Seeing the children’s eyes light up with wonder and awe is something you don’t want to miss.” Christmas at the Star Barn will be held on Saturday, Dec. 2, at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. EAHS will stage “The Play That Goes Wrong” BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“This is a play like no other,” said Garrett Messick, a freshman at Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS), describing “The Play That Goes Wrong.” “It’ll leave you on the edge of your seat the whole time, and you’ll be begging for more when it’s over.” EAHS will present the show on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 1 and 7 p.m. at the high school, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown.
“The play is about the Cornley Drama Society and their production of ‘The Murder at Haversham Manor,’” explained sophomore Hannah Taylor. “But, while the cast does their best to keep the show going, things just keep going wrong. Sets fall apart, unsuspecting understudies are thrown on stage and even more hits these unfortunate actors.” Sophomore Josie Sirinides portrays a member of the stage crew of the play within the play and finds herself in a starring role, despite not wanting See Play pg 3 R101203
“One hundred percent of all donations and proceeds go directly to support adoptions of children with special needs and humanitarian support for the children we serve.” She noted that Christmas at the Star Barn relies on community support to happen annually. “Our dedicated corporate sponsors make this event possible and do so much for the orphaned and at-risk children we serve,” she stated, noting that sponsors include Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster, North Group Consultants, Abel & Son Roofing & Siding, Bates Enterprises/JURA, Haldeman Bros. Masonry and uFinancial. Advance tickets are required to attend Christmas at the Star Barn and may be purchased by visiting www.brittanyshope.org/events/ christmas.

Festivities throughout the grounds will include pony rides, face painting, Christmas cookie and cupcake decorating, children’s crafts, backyard games, family photo sessions and a campfire with s’mores. People are also invited to take a self-guided tour of the Star Barn Village, enjoy outdoor holiday decorations and explore the fully decorated Star Barn, Star Barn Museum, chicken coop and carriage house. Activities will run from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Not only does the event provide a fun and festive way to kick off the holidays, but it also supports the mission of Brittany’s Hope, Myers said. “The Star Barn and Food for Thought Catering offer Christmas at the Star Barn as a fundraiser for Brittany’s Hope to aid orphaned and at-risk children,” she explained.

Craft show will support mission outreach fund BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Gail Ruhl knows it can be intimidating for people to walk into a new church. That’s one of the reasons Ruhl’s Church hosts an annual Manheim Holiday Craft Show. “We try to get people in the door however they feel comfortable,” said Gail, who is organizing the show with Michelle Eakman. “Coming into a church for a craft show might be where they feel comfortable, and then you get to have a conversation with them, and it could turn into something. That’s our hope.” The Manheim Holiday Craft Show will be held at Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will feature vendors and food. “We have over 30 vendors,” said Eakman, who is coordinating the craft side of the event and who will be selling her handmade infinity T-shirt scarves. “It will be a wide vari-
ety - baked goods to clothing and embroidered items. We’ll have some direct sales like Pampered Chef and Norwex.” Gail, who is in charge of the food, noted that the menu will feature tried-and-true items that people come back for every year. “I’m making my chicken corn noodle soup, and we always have barbecue sandwiches and hot dogs,” she said. “ We also offer some baked goods and a variety of beverages.” The soup will be available to eat in or to go. “People can bring their own containers to take soup, but it’s not necessary,” Gail shared. “We’ll dish it up in quart containers.” Gail and her husband, Chuck, have been making the soup for many years. “It’s a combination of a couple of recipes, and it’s been tweaked over the years,” Gail commented. Proceeds from the Manheim Holiday Craft Show are used to support the mission

outreach fund of the church. “We do local, national and global missions,” Gail said, adding that a group from the church takes a stateside mission trip annually in June. This coming year’s trip is still being determined, but Gail thinks it’s possible the volunteers will return to Montpelier, Vt., where they served five individuals and helped a local church last year. Just weeks after they returned home, heavy rains and flooding hit the area, destroying one of the homes they worked on and causing major damage at the church.

Gail encourages anyone who wants to shop, eat good food or enjoy some fellowship to come to the craft show. “We as a church are benefiting from having the craft show, but it’s also allowing local crafters and people who do direct sales a place for them to come and showcase their talents and sell their wares,” she said. “We try to be welcoming as a church. We want everybody to come through our doors and check us out.” For more information, search for “Manheim Holiday Craft Show” on Facebook.

It’s really an entertaining show for kids and adults alike.” Senior Olivia Gable said the comedy never stops throughout the play. “Everything that happens within the show just builds up, making the ending just as funny as the beginning,” she stated. “We have worked so hard to prepare for this show, and we are so excited for everyone to come see it go wrong.” To pull off the failing play that the characters are in, the students had to practice onstage stunts such as trips and falls, and the set had to be

Members of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Mount Joy believe that it is important to reach out and serve the people in their community, said parishioner Janet Lehman. “One way that St. Mark’s family meets the needs of people in their community is through their food ministry,” she explained. St. Mark’s will offer a free Thanksgiving Day dinner on Thursday, Nov. 23, with curbside pickup between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. Delivery will be available to people who are sick and who are homebound. “St. Mark’s began serving a free Thanksgiving Day dinner in 2005,” Lehman said, noting that about 70 people came for the meal the first year. “Each year more individuals and families are enjoying (the meal). In 2022, almost 700 people enjoyed St. Mark’s Thanksgiving Day

dinner.” The meal will include turkey breast over stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, a vegetable, cranberry sauce, applesauce, rolls and butter and a dessert. Last year, about 100 people from Mount Joy and surrounding communities worked together to prepare, cook and serve the Thanksgiving dinner, Lehman recalled. “Many volunteers are again needed to help with this community outreach dinner,” she said. “Volunteers are needed to help peel potatoes, make the stuffing, set up tables and chairs, etc. on Wednesday evening, Nov. 22, at 6 p.m. at The Gathering Place.” Volunteers are needed Thanksgiving Day at The Gathering Place to cook and serve the meal, wash dishes and clean up following the meal, as well as deliver meals. Volunteers are also needed to donate cakes and pies for the dinner. The free community

Volunteers with St. Mark’s United Methodist Church get ready to serve a free Thanksgiving Day dinner.
Thanksgiving Day dinner is just one way in which St. Mark’s reaches out to the people of Mount Joy and surrounding areas with its food ministry, Lehman noted. The church members also serve a free community dinner monthly, usually on the third Sunday of the month. These meals are served curbside with pickup at the church, 27 E. Main St., Mount Joy, from 4 to 5 p.m. To make reservations for the Thanksgiving Day dinner, call the church at 717-6535493, extension 270. Callers
should give their name and phone number and the number of meals they would like. People who need meals to be delivered should also provide their address. She started the kids’ run at last year’s event and has made some tweaks to this year’s logistics. “There’s going to be a small route in the parking lot for the youngest who want to participate,” she said, noting that it will include a loop that is approximately one-tenth of a mile. “Other kids can participate in the quarter-mile loop on the grass and pavement, and they can complete the loop up to four times.” The kids’ run will be sponsored by The Tatted Toy Guys in Elizabethtown, which will distribute prizes to participants. The Great Turkey Chase has grown each year, Wells said, adding that close to 300 people participated last year.
