Susquehanna Chorale will usher in festive season

In 1981, Linda Tedford founded the Susquehanna Chorale after she and her husband moved to central Pennsylvania from the Philadelphia area. More than 40 years later, the chorale is still going strong, and several ensembles will present holiday concerts this month and next.

The Susquehanna Chorale’s season, “A Kaleidoscope of Song,” will feature the 42-member adult chamber ensemble nationally known for its musicality and emotional connection to the music.

The season will kick off with the Youth Choral Festival at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24. The concert will be held at Messiah University’s Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts, University Avenue,

Mechanicsburg. The festival will feature the Children, Youth, Alta Voce and Adult chorales.

“Both the youth and adult groups perform on their own, and then at the end, we come together to sing this beautiful anthem of peace, written to commemorate the revolution in Estonia,” Tedford shared. “It’s maybe 170 people on stage, an intergenerational choir singing a piece that concludes the whole concert, a plea for peace in the world. It’s a goosebumpy moment.”

The youth choral group is made up of high school and college students throughout central Pennsylvania. “These kids are all here because they really want to sing,” Tedford said. “They have high motivation to do things really well. The conductors expect nothing but the best from them, and they get it. It’s an inspiration to see these kids working to the

top of their ability and the talent they have.”

Candlelight Christmas concerts will celebrate the season with music including traditional carols. These concerts will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, at Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, 777 S. Mount Joy St., Elizabethtown; at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, at Messiah University; and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15, at Market Square Presbyterian Church, 20 S. Second St., Harrisburg.

The chorale will perform several carol arrangements to honor the late Alice Parker, well-known in chorale circles for her contributions to the genre. Parker passed away last year at the age of 98. Selections will include “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” “Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella” and “Angels We Have Heard on High.”

Day-of registration will start at 6:45 a.m. The 5K race will begin at 8:15 a.m., and kids’ runs will start at 9:15 a.m. Bib number pickup will be available for preregistered participants on Wednesday, Nov. 27, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the church.

“This is a 5K run/walk event,” said race director Grace Wells. “Our racecourse is a 5K course, starting at EBIC, circling around the town, returning back to EBIC for the finish. We have stuffed turkeys on the course and a frozen turkey at the finish line for those who find one on the route.”

The event will also feature two free fun runs. “(We’ll have) one for the youngest participants who can’t run too far and then another for those who can run about a quarter mile loop. They can run up to four times for their mile,” Wells shared. “Our

Brittany’s Hope provides adoption grants for families to adopt special needs children, and the organization also supports humanitarian efforts with its partner children’s homes in Vietnam, Kenya and Ethiopia.

Family fun at Christmas at Kraybill

From horse-drawn wagon rides to a brisket cook-off, the sixth annual Christmas at Kraybill Craft Fair and Celebration will offer holiday fun for the whole family. The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kraybill Mennonite School, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy.

The breakfast buffet will be sponsored by Food for Thought Catering and will be served at six seating times between 7:30 and 10:15 a.m. Tickets will include a special gift delivered by Santa’s helpers, a photo with Santa and access to all activities on the site.

Visitors can stroll the grounds of Stone Gables Estate to take in holiday scenery; play backyard games; enjoy face painting; decorate cookies and cupcakes; view holiday

“One hundred percent of all proceeds are dedicated to the children we serve,” Myers shared. “Attending Christmas at the Star Barn is a gift to your family and a gift to orphaned and at-risk children. What better Christmas gift can you give?”

Tickets are required to attend Christmas at the Star Barn Village. For more information or to support Brittany’s Hope, visit www.brittany shope.org. The organization will also participate in the ExtraGive on Friday, Nov. 22.

Brightspeed sponsors HalloweE-town Parade

Brightspeed, a broadband builder focused on empowering more homes with ultrafast, reliable internet, was the presenting sponsor of the third annual “Not Too Scary HalloweE-town Parade” in Elizabethtown on Oct. 27.

In addition to sponsoring the event, Brightspeed brought along its Day Brightener flower truck to hand out free, local, fresh flowers, mini pumpkins and glow sticks.

Emily Walker, Brightspeed community affairs manager, also participated in the event as one of the parade’s judges.

With Pennsylvania ranked 12th in the nation for internet coverage, speed and availability according to www.BroadbandNow.com, Brightspeed is dedicated to increasing accessibility to affordable, reliable, high-speed internet to Lancaster County residents and beyond.

For more information about Brightspeed and fiber availability in and around Elizabethtown, visit www.brightspeed.com/lovefiber.

More than 45 local artisans, crafters and vendors will be featured at the fair, selling handmade items such as hand-turned wooden bowls, jewelry, quilts, ornaments, home d é cor, local honey, children’s toys and books and more.

“Attendees enjoy the festive atmosphere and great variety of vendors that we have each year at the craft fair,” said Trish Hopper, Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF) volunteer and event coordinator. “It’s a great place to do some Christmas shopping.”

Along with shopping, the celebration will feature horsedrawn wagon rides. “The Clydesdale-drawn wagon rides are a highlight of the event with Christmas carols playing on the wagon,” Hopper shared. “Donations are being accepted for the wagon rides, with all proceeds going to Mennonite Disaster Service to support their relief efforts to help those impacted by Hurricane Helene.”

Kraybill will host a baked goods stand and will sell gingerbread cookie decorating kits, containing gingerbread man cookies, icing and decorations.

The event will also feature the third annual brisket and chili cook-off.

“The chili and brisket cook-off was the idea of several parents at the school that thought a cook-off

would add to the enjoyment and attendance of our Christmas at Kraybill event,” Hopper shared. “Gene Wenger’s Meats and Fine Foods of Elizabethtown donates over 100 pounds of brisket that is then cooked by the competitors. This competition is for home chefs rather than restaurants and is very popular.” Prizes are awarded to the first-place winners of the cook-off for best chili and best brisket.

Proceeds from the Christmas event will benefit the PTF. “This is the main fundraiser for Kraybill’s Parent Teacher Fellowship committee, which supports other special educational and extracurricular events at the school, including roller skating nights for students, family picnics and special acts of appreciation for our teachers and staff,” Hopper said. “The concession stand is a special fundraiser to support the seventh- and eighth-grade trip to Philadelphia.”

Holding an event like this helps the school connect to people beyond its walls, Hopper noted. “Kraybill values our whole community,” she said. “This event allows current and past families along with our broader community an opportunity to fellowship together while supporting local artisans and businesses.”

The brisket and chili cook-off is open to the public to enter, with a deadline of Thursday, Nov. 14. Tastings will be open to the public starting at 11 a.m. on Nov. 23 and will be offered until sold out. Winners will be announced by 1 p.m. at the event.

More information about the event, including how to enter the cook-off and preorder gingerbread cookie kits, may be found by searching for “Christmas at Kraybill” on Facebook.

Brass accompaniments will add depth to pieces including “Gloria Fanfare” and “Festival First Nowell.” Guest artists will include the Messiah University Brass and Percussion, which will perform a pre-concert recital 15 minutes prior to each concert.

“In all of my programming, I emphasize the element of communication with the audience,” Tedford said. “We hold singers to a high standard for technique, but we also talk about ‘What would you want the audience to feel at this moment? What do you want them to get from this piece?’ We work very hard on interpretation and facial expression and showing the love we have for choral music as a group.”

At the Christmas concerts, audiences can enjoy beautifully decorated venues, she said, noting that each concert will feature a candlelight procession and recessional.

The Susquehanna Chorale is a recipient of Chorus America’s most prestigious award, the Margaret Hillis Award for Artistic and Organizational Achievement, and several of the chorale’s recordings have been considered for Grammy nominations.

Conductor Tedford has been honored by the American Choral Directors Association of Pennsylvania with the Elaine Brown Award for lifelong commitment to excellence and leadership in the choral art. She has also received Theatre Harrisburg’s Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts in the Capital Region, among other honors.

The chorale is supported in part by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Spring concerts will be held in Hershey and Harrisburg. For more information, visit www.susque hannachorale.org/performances. Both in-person and livestream ticket options are available.

Craft show will benefit church missions

“This is all for a good cause, and it has a family atmosphere,” said Steph Heisey, describing the Manheim Holiday Craft Show. “It’s so welcoming.”

The show will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. The event will feature vendors and food.

This is the eighth year for the event, which will highlight local crafters and direct-sales vendors.

“I have over 35 vendors,” said Michelle Eakman, who organizes that part of the event. “They are selling handmade cards, jams, chocolates, wax melts, signs, embroidery, painted rocks, jewelry, ornaments, stationery products, wood-burned items, scarves and more.” Direct sales will include Mary Kay, Young Living, Pampered Chef, Norwex and Color Street.

The show will feature some youthful salespeople as well.

“I have some young makers in their teens,” Eakman shared. “I have a girl who does calligraphy and another girl who makes big crocheted stuffed animals. It’s exciting to see younger kids get excited about their crafting. It’s fun to see their creativity and the possibility of turning it into a business.”

Gail Ruhl is in charge of the food at the craft show. “There’s going to be lots of food, and it’s going to be delicious,” she said, adding that food will be

available for eat-in or takeout.

“We’re going to have our chicken corn noodle soup, hot dogs, beef barbecue, baked goods and beverages. All the money we make from the food sales benefits our local, national and global missions.”

The church members take an annual mission trip in June to various locations around the country. This past summer, a group served people recovering from massive flooding in Vermont. The summer 2025 trip is not finalized yet, but Ruhl said they are considering helping hurricane victims in North Carolina.

“We also do a lot of local things,” she said. “A group just finished a ramp for someone who really needed one at their home. We did a day and helped a woman clean her house so she was ready when she came home from a hospital stay.”

Proceeds from the vendor fees also benefit the church’s missions, even though Eakman is not a member of the church.

“This is a really great fundraiser, because it’s a shared project,” Ruhl said. “Michelle does the lion’s share of the work. I cook, but she does everything else, and we really appreciate that. She’s very generous in helping us reach our goals and be able to do the things we want to do for others.”

While the craft show provides an opportunity for visitors to get started on their holiday shopping, the event serves another

BUSINESS Directory

purpose, Ruhl said: It brings people in the building.

“I’m excited when anybody new walks in our doors. I’m glad when anybody comes for any activity we hold here,” she commented. “It’s an opportunity for them to come and ask questions if they’re interested in learning more about us. It’s just fun and a very informal way for somebody to feel comfortable coming to a church they haven’t been to before. That’s a local mission of ours as well - to bring people to Christ and tell them about the love of Jesus.”

Heisey, who will have two stands at the craft show, regularly attends the church’s summer mission trips and noted that the craft show is another way to serve the community through the proceeds raised.

“We go on the trips to share the love of Jesus,” she said. “It’s what He requires of us - to help other people.”

The Manheim Holiday Craft Show will be a cash-only event. Parking is available in a large

lot, and both the building and restrooms are handicapped-accessible. For more information, search for “Manheim Holiday Craft Show” on Facebook.
