Wonder, amazement and joy all live in the lower level of the Elizabethtown Public Library for several weeks in November and December. Those are just some of the emotions Craig Coble witnesses when people come to see the display laid out by The Train Guys.

“For the kids, it’s a lot of bigeyed wonderment at things they’ve never seen before,” said Coble. “The expressions I get to see on the kids’ faces are great. And then the older crowd gets misty eyed, remembering trains from their childhood.”

For the first time since 2019, The Train Guys will operate their display at the library, 10 S. Market St., beginning on Tuesday, Nov. 29,

from 6 to 7 p.m. “That night coincides with the Elizabethtown Christmas tree lighting, so people can come see the trains when they come to that,” Coble noted. “And it’s also our first responders’ night, so we’re inviting all first responders to come see the trains.”

The Train Guys begin setting up the layouts in mid-October, Coble explained, noting that the core group includes about 20 volunteers.

“One of things that sets us apart is we have 50 push buttons throughout the room that people can use to start trains and operate accessories,” Coble stated.

He noted that the group sets up

the display not just to entertain visitors, but also to support the library. “Most of the folks in our group have a strong incentive to give back to our community,” he shared, noting that proceeds from suggested donations for admission as well as a silent auction and giveaway drawing at the display benefit the library.

As visitors enter the display from the hallway, they can enjoy a circus and amusement park scene, and they’ll be greeted by costumed characters, including a railroad hobo, police officer and engineer.

Once inside the room, they’ll see a display that features up to

20 trains running at once, through everything from urban to rural landscapes. “We even have dignitaries who visit from time to time,” Coble said, pointing out Laurel and Hardy waiting on a train platform.

Elizabethtown’s past can be found throughout the layout, including the old schoolhouse that now houses the Elizabethtown Historical Society and a ballfield replica of the one used by the Klein Chocolate Company team. One area of the display features standard-gauge trains, which Coble pointed out are very unusual to see in operation. “We only bring these out about every three years or so,” he stated. “These train cars are up to 100 years old.” The display ends with garden-scale trains set up on the floor on an indoor/outdoor carpet.

Christmas will come to Elizabethtown on Tuesday, Nov. 29. The festivities will run from 3 to 8 p.m. and will feature something for everyone.

Beginning at 3 p.m., LIV-ETown, in cooperation with the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce, will host Windows on Market. The event will highlight Elizabethtown businesses with festive window reveals, music, snacks and holiday decorations. LIV-ETown will also offer free gift wrapping at downtown stores during the event.

From 5 to 8 p.m., Santa will greet visitors from his cottage on the square. “Businesses will be open for shopping, which is really cool because many businesses in Elizabethtown are normally closed on Tuesdays,” said Carissa Ressler, chair of the Elizabethtown holiday committee, a committee of the Chamber. “They’ll have lots of specials, so families can eat and shop downtown.”

The Chamber will also host three food trucks - Uncle Paul’s Stuffed Pretzels, Fuego Latino and Hitch Coffee - in the parking lot of The Elizabeth, 18 N. Market St., and people are invited inside the building to participate in free ornament making. “Cindy Telenko of Twisted Easel will be running that, along with members of the Elizabethtown High School Key Club, who will be helping families and kids make the ornaments,” Ressler stated.

Carolers from Elizabethtown College’s Vocalign A Capella will stroll the streets and, beginning at 6:30 p.m., members of the Elizabethtown Area High School show choir will sing around the town Christmas tree, encouraging people to congregate for the tree lighting, which will begin at 7 p.m.

Ressler noted that the event is a nice way to usher in the holidays. “It’s a way to kick off the holiday spirit in Elizabethtown as the community comes together,” she said. “It’s great for families to come downtown, not be rushed or hurried, but just slow down a bit and enjoy time together.”

Creativity On Display At Marietta Tour Of Homes

“This is a great day to get out and get into the Christmas spirit,” said Jason Spickler, describing the Marietta Candlelight Tour of Homes. “You can do some shopping, do some sightseeing and see some beautiful decorating techniques and get inspiration from them.” The tour will be held on Sunday, Dec. 4, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

This is the 56th year for the event, which is sponsored by Marietta Restoration Associates (MRA). This year’s tour will feature eight

private homes as well as a local artist showcase, holiday marketplaces and more.

“We try to have a variety of different types of homes, some older and more historical and some newer,” said Spickler, who is cochair of the tour with Rebecca Baltozer. “We have a couple of homes featured on the tour that have never been on the tour before.”

Screening and Gifted Identification Process:

In adherence to PA Regulations for Gifted Education, the Elizabethtown Area School District supports a multiple criteria method for identifying eligible students who may be gifted. Teachers, parents, school counselors, a school psychologist, administrators, and other individuals at the parents’ request are involved in the process. The process includes a review of classroom performance and school records, use of rating scales and parental input, and evaluation by school psychologist and multidisciplinary evaluation. All students in the gifted education program demonstrate a need for specially designed instruction.

MH Art Gallery and Studio will showcase “Small Town Glow,” original works inspired by small-town life, during the tour. Marietta Community House will host a vendor market, and Pioneer Fire Company No. 1 will hold a chicken and waffles dinner, Spickler said.

Spickler emphasized that not only does the tour offer a way to see

creative decorating, but it also raises funds for MRA. The organization works to preserve and protect the history of Marietta.

“The tour is just a great community day in Marietta,” Spickler said.

“It’s a way to bring everyone together to enjoy the town, to see some unique decorations and to have fun.”

For Jack Messick, 8, who helped his grandfather work on setting up the layout, the trains offer entertainment and fun. “I like pushing the buttons,” he said. “I like the light-up stuff and I like watching the trains run. It’s just cool.”

Dunkle To Share At Women’s Meeting

Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Nov. 29, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.

Ruthie Dunkle will speak on “Created to Grieve.” She will share as a grieving mother, and her desire is that the group will gain encouragement and hope from God’s Word and from each other.

Dunkle has been a pastor’s wife and speaker for

45 years. She also was the middle school Bible teacher at Manheim Christian Day School for 18 years. She and her husband, the Rev. Jeff Dunkle, have retired but are still involved in ministries. She sings in a gospel quartet, One Heart - One Voice, with two of her sisters and brother-in-law.

“Buzzing Around Bethlehem” Set

Etown Grace Church, 305 Anchor Road, Elizabethtown, will host a family-friendly event called “Buzzing Around Bethlehem” on Saturday, Dec. 3, and Sunday, Dec. 4. “Buzzing Around Bethlehem” is a walking tour that will begin every 15 minutes from 6 to 8 p.m.

The birth of Jesus will be observed from various perspectives at 10 stations. Guests will meet in the center square of Bethlehem and be greeted by a Bethlehem Tourist Bureau guide. The tourists will be led on a journey featuring drama and music

and inviting them to meet Isaiah, who wrote the prophecy of Jesus’ birth; Simeon, who blessed Jesus and predicted His future; Elizabeth; Joseph; Mary; and other key people from the biblical account of Jesus’ birth.

The event is handicapped-accessible. Refreshments will be available at the end of the tour. There will also be door prizes.

Golden Eagle Hikers Set Walk

2022 Holiday Program Posted

The 2022 Holiday Program sponsored annually by the Lancaster County Office of Aging is underway. This year, the agency will provide grocery store gift cards to Office of Aging clients in need, allowing them to choose fresh foods specific to their diet or other foods they enjoy.
