GEARS will hold Holiday Parade BY CATHY MOLITORIS
On Saturday, Dec. 9, you just might hear “Jingle Bells,” “Deck the Halls,” “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” and more throughout the streets of Elizabethtown. The GEARS Holiday Parade will step off at 4 p.m. with a theme of “Holiday Songs.”
The parade will process down Market Street in Elizabethtown, from West Bainbridge Street to Winnemore and Mechanics alleys. Anywhere along Market is a good spot to catch all the action, said GEARS program coordinator Lee Eckert, noting, “Most people like to be near the judges’ stand next to the E-town post office. That’s See Parade pg 3
Huntley Hammer
Aiding others in the community BY CATHY MOLITORIS
untley Hammer may be only 13 years old, but he’s already made a difference in his community. Huntley, a member of Boy Scout Troop 162, recently completed his Eagle Scout project by creating first aid kits to distribute at the East Donegal-Conoy Christian Food Bank. “ We put together 200 kits,” Huntley said. “I had help from my teachers, my family and my friends.” The kits include a wide variety of essentials, such as bandages, gauze, tape, scissors, tweezers, antibiotic ointment, sting relief, ice packs, gloves, cotton balls and Q-tips. They will be distributed to clients of the food bank, located at the intersection of Coffee Goss Road
“The kits were a need we hadn’t filled before, and I know people will appreciate them.” in Boy Scouts, but he was stumped on a project. “I was looking online for ideas, but I didn’t find anything I liked,” he recalled. “I didn’t want to build something, because I’m young and I really don’t know how to build stuff. When I thought of the first aid kits, I realized I could still help
people a lot with them.” Huntley had visited the food pantry before, delivering donations from the Scouting for Food drive, so he thought the location would be a perfect spot to distribute the kits. “I didn’t buy anything for kits. Everything was donated,” he said. “Someone also donated all the bags. I went out to local businesses, and I asked for donations. I also put a sheet up at the post office near me, saying what I needed.” Huntley, the son of Steve and Dori Hammer of Bainbridge, began working on the project about a year ago. He and his team assembled the kits in early October. Huntley joined Cub Scouts in first grade, and he set a goal early on of earning his Eagle Scout Award. “When I was growing up in our

Joy runs through “Hello, Dolly!” BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“This show is classic Broadway at its best,” said Becky Groff, who plays the title character in “Hello, Dolly!” “It’s just fun. The songs are singable. The show is heartwarming, but never sad. This is not a ‘walk away thinking in deep about your life’ show. This is a show you walk away from singing and smiling, and who doesn’t love that?” “Hello, Dolly!” will be performed at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, on select dates from Friday, Dec. 8,
through Sunday, Dec. 17. The story follows Dolly, a widow socialite-turned-matchmaker who works to find matches for others while navigating her own love story. “The show is technically about the exploits of Dolly, but that’s not really what it’s about,” Groff stated. “It’s about finding love in unexpected places.” It’s also about finding where you belong, said Amanda Trusty, who plays Irene Molloy. “A main theme in this show is chosen family,” she said. he admitted. “This is very different, and I’m so happy I’m a part of this. It’s really a great show and it’s going to be very enjoyable for audiences.” Sean Reynolds, who plays Cornelius Hackl in the show, echoed Glacken’s thoughts, adding, “Sometimes people might think with golden age musicals that they’re dated. I don’t think any of the material in this show is dated. The songs, the energy, the plot it’s all very translatable to a modern audience.” The cast of “Hello, Dolly!” features 21 actors, which is on the smaller side for a typical production of the musical, said Reynolds. “It’s nice, because everybody in the show gets a chance to shine, and everyone can be seen on stage,” he remarked. “I think that’s rare in a lot of musical theater, where there is often a
really big ensemble.” The cast also features several younger actors, who surprised Groff at an early rehearsal. “They didn’t know the song ‘Hello, Dolly!’” she recalled with a smile. “They had never seen or heard this show.” She considers that an opportunity to spread the joy of a timeless musical out to new audiences. “If you saw it when you were a kid,
or if you’ve never seen it before, come see this,” she said. “It’s a fun show, and it’s just universally appealing.” “Hello, Dolly!” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Dec. 8, 9, 15 and 16, as well as on Thursday, Dec. 14. It will also be performed at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Dec. 10 and 17. For more information, visit www.susquehanna stage.com.
troop, they were telling me to going and go even faster,” he slow down, and that just said with a smile. “I really motivated me more to keep wanted to do this.” An eighth-grader at Elizabethtown Area Middle School, Huntley enjoys playing video games in his free time, and he loves Boy Scouts. “It’s a great program for kids and teenagers because it gives them something productive to do, and it also helps people,” he said. “It’s
fun, and you get to hang out with friends and explore the wilderness.” Pat Vogel, president of the East Donegal-Conoy Christian Food Bank, said she was impressed with Huntley’s determination to help. “I was amazed at how much he accomplished, especially because he’s so young,” she said. “The kits were a need we hadn’t filled before, and I
know people will appreciate them.” The monetary donation from Huntley’s efforts will make a big difference as well, she noted, adding, “Our supplies are running low, so this really helps.” The East Donegal-Conoy Christian Food Bank is open on Wednesdays from 2 to 4 p.m. For more information, contact Vogel at 717-426-2360.
Groff noted that many of the characters in the show are stuck in jobs or roles that don’t make them happy. “I think a theme is ‘Don’t wait to live,’” she said. “Don’t wait until you retire to have a life, because life is too short.” W hen the cast began rehearsals for the show, director Keifer Kemmerly emphasized the overarching emotion he wanted audiences to take away from the show, Trusty said. “His whole thesis is ‘joy,’” she shared. “Everything in the show is infused with joy.” Josh Glacken, who plays Horace Vandergelder in the show, said he was familiar with “Hello, Dolly!” and he was initially hesitant to audition. “Honestly, I didn’t love the show, but I had only seen it performed at a high-school level,”

managed by UCEA. The building has been renovated to create four new apartments, effectively doubling its housing capacity. This development represents an expansion of Bridge House 90, a crisis housing program of Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services (ECHOS), and
will allow an anticipated four households to have access to a transitional housing space where they can focus on securing permanent housing in the greater Elizabethtown area without the threat of homelessness. ECHOS, one of the nonprofit social service agencies
leasing space from UCEA at CPOW, provides essential programs and services for community members in the northwest region of Lancaster County who may be at risk of or experiencing homelessness. To support this renovation project, UCEA has set a fundraising goal of $120,000.

Holiday Bucket List makes spirits bright BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“There are a lot of holiday activities happening across York and Lancaster counties,” said Megan Salvatore, visitor service representative for Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA). For the first time, SNHA has created a Holiday Bucket List, highlighting 25 events throughout the region. SNHA staff members had created bucket lists previously, but none focused solely on holiday events, Salvatore explained. “Susquehanna National Heritage Area has a mission to connect the people and communities of Lancaster and York County in order to celebrate our shared
heritage, encourage preservation and promote sustainable economic growth,” she stated. “The Holiday Bucket List invites people to immerse themselves in the diverse holiday traditions of our national heritage area. By participating in the bucket list activities, you can support a local business and our many arts and culture organizations.” The list provides activities to help people get into the holiday spirit, Salvatore commented. “We encourage residents and visitors to utilize the list as a tool to keep your family busy discovering something new or to show visiting family around during holiday visits,” she said. “Many of the activities stretch from now until the

In the mood for some authentic Schweinshaxe? Have a hankering for some Kassler Rippchen? Or maybe you’d just like to know more about both of those food items. You can sample the German specialties (pork knuckle and smoked pork chops, respectively) when Lancaster Liederkranz holds its annual Christkindlmarkt. The event will be held on Sunday, Dec. 10, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds of the Liederkranz, 722 Chiques Road, Manheim. It will feature vendors, music, entertainment and lots of food. “Outside, we will have pierogies, wurst sandwiches, homemade soup, Gluhwein, German beer and hot chocolate,” said Elise Fasnacht, event chair. “Inside, we will have a sit-down meal with beef roulade, pork schnitzel, Schweinshaxe, Oktoberfest chicken, Kassler Rippchen and apple strudel for dessert.” Food will be available to eat in or for takeout. Four varieties of homemade

More than 30 vendors will be featured throughout the market. “Some will be selling German candies and food items,” Fasnacht said. “Others will have traditional German Christmas decorations, nutcrackers and Advent calendars. We try to focus on local talent, so we’ll have artists, photographers and people who make handmade ornaments as well.” Entertainment will include performances by the Schuhplattlers dancing group, featuring adults; the Kindergruppe children’s dancing group; and the AllweilJung folk dancing group. “Our mixed chorus and men’s chorus members will be walking around singing Christmas carols,” Fasnacht added. On-site parking will be available at the event for a fee, and off-site parking will also be offered, with a shuttle bus to the site. EASD wins teaching award foundational skills of coding, computational thinking, and the importance of perseverance. At EASD’s two primary elementary buildings, Bainbridge and East High Street elementary schools, all students receive both technology and STEAM as separate classes. Debra Painter teaches the primary-level technology classes. In these classes, students learn basic computer skills and a variety of digital citizenship topics, including the qualities of a good digital citizen, staying safe while working online, and protecting their digital footprints. Through the use of tools like Google Slides and Google Drawings, students learn and practice basic word processing skills and elements of design, including text, fonts, images, and drawing tools. First- and second-graders also spend time learning about and applying basic coding skills. Students use Blockly and drag-and-drop coding in programs like Code.org and Kodable to build algorithms, debug, create loops, and apply

conditions. Each year since 2015, primary students have participated in the Hour of Code during Computer Science Education Week. In the primary STEAM class, taught by Crystal Hirst, students engage in building and design challenges where they are given a specific task as well as free building time. They use various materials such as Magna tiles, straws and connectors, Legos, Keva planks, and marble run sets in their solutions. Students engage in building design challenges and activities while they learn about simple machines, stability, and structure, as well as improve spatial awareness and problem-solving skills. Bridges, 3D shapes, towers, and buildings are just a few of the hands-on building structures created in class. The primary STEAM class also includes coding with robots both independently and collaboratively. For students at the Bear Creek School - which educates students in grades three through five - Library/Technology is one class. Erin Hibshman, the school librarian, teaches the library and research skills portion of the curriculum, and Trevor Gontz, the school’s technology and engineering teacher, teaches technology skills. The engineering units and research projects are cotaught by Hibshman and Gontz. Through these activities, students learn to research and make safe and responsible use of technology with various tools and the engineering design process at all three grade levels. Topics covered in these grades are research skills, graphic design with Google Drawings, word processing with
Google Docs, email with Gmail and Schoology Messages, CAD/3D modeling with Tinkercad & Sketchup for Schools, coding with Scratch, multimedia presentations with Google Slides, and the engineering design process, which students use while working in teams to create hands-on projects.
