Since2014, Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elizabethtown has been ringing in the new year with a family-friendly celebration, and the party will continue this year. Welcome 2023 will be held at the church, 125 E. High St., from 3 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31.
“We’ll have a chicken barbecue, which helps to pay for this event,” said Phil Clark, event chair. “That’s the only thing that has a charge. Everything else is free.” The chicken barbecue will feature chicken from Kauffman’s BBQ Chicken, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll and butter
and a drink. The meal will be available to eat in or to go.
Festivities for the evening will include bingo in the church social hall, along with free hot dogs and soup. The youth ensemble from the church will perform in the sanctuary from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. as part of the Music on High series.
Outside, free popcorn, hot chocolate and s’mores will be available, and members of e-dance center will perform. A DJ will also be on hand playing music. “For the first time, East High Street will be closed from the church parking lot to the square,” Clark noted. First responders will be on-site with their equip-
ment, including police cars and fire trucks for kids to explore. At the nearby Winters Heritage House Museum, located at 47 E. High St., a variety of children’s crafts and activities will be offered during the event as well.
The festivities will conclude with the raising of a star at 7 p.m., followed by fireworks. “The Elizabeth, which is the former Moose Lodge, is a good viewing spot for the fireworks if you want to get away from the crowd,” said Clark, noting that hundreds of people attended the New Year’s Eve event last year.
The timing of the event is intentional for several reasons, Clark
shared. He explained that 7 p.m. corresponds with midnight in Letterkenny, Ireland, the sister city of Elizabethtown. Elizabethtown founders Barnabas and Elizabeth Hughes came from Letterkenny. The early end time for the party also works well for families, Clark said, and for Masonic Villages residents, who often attend.
“The whole event is a lot of fun,” said music director Kevin Gane. “There’s something for everybody to do. It’s a nice community gathering.”
Tickets for the chicken barbecue may be purchased at the church office. Some extra meals will be available at the event.

If you look out your window on New Year’s Day, you may see a crowd of motorcycles zooming down the road. They are part of an annual ride to benefit veterans.
“We take the same route every year, and people know about it, so they come out and kids come out holding flags and cheering us on,” said Tyler Stumpf, one of the event organizers. “It’s become a New Year’s tradition.”
The is the 14th year for the event, which will be held on Sunday, Jan. 1. Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m., and the ride will leave from the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy, at 1 p.m. The ladies auxiliary will serve breakfast items before the ride.
The 25-mile ride will follow a route along the Susquehanna River and conclude at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St., where a pork and sauerkraut meal will be

Church Will Offer Free Christmas Meal
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“This is all about a good meal and good fellowship,” said event committee member Clare Funck, describing the free community Christmas meal at Cross Roads Church. The meal will be served on Sunday, Dec. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, located at 800 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy. Options will be available for dine-in and takeout.
This is the 25th year the church has offered the meal, which began not only to provide
sustenance at Christmas, but also to provide companionship. “When I talk to people who come to this dinner, a lot of people have just lost a spouse, and the holidays are hard,” Funck stated. “Some have no family in the area and nobody to spend Christmas with. That’s what this season is all aboutcommunity, fellowship and being there for people.”
The meal will include turkey, gourmet potatoes, stuffing, green beans and desserts. Everything is made and donated by the congregation, said

served following the ride. An auction will be held there as well, featuring items donated by local businesses. T-shirts and patches will also be for sale. Proceeds from the event will benefit veterans in the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Since its inception, the ride has raised more than $240,000, Stumpf said, adding, “We will hit the quarter-million mark this year.”
Each year, the event includes fun traditions such as Baby New Year, when a participant is chosen for the honor and must attend in a baby costume and sash. This year’s honoree is Brian Landvader.
Over the years, the ride has grown significantly, Stumpf said. “We started with 11 motorcycles, and now we’re averaging about 400 motorcycles,” he commented. “When all the bikes
are lined up on Main Street in Mount Joy, it’s really something to see.”
Billy Hecht, who is also helping to organize the ride, said the event has continued to be popular because it not only offers a fun excursion for participants, but it also supports an important cause. “A lot of people like that the money stays local,” he noted. “One hundred percent of the money goes strictly to the veterans’ needs.”
The event will be held rain, snow or shine, and participants are encouraged to come with any form of transportation. “You don’t have to come with a motorcycle,” Hecht shared. “You can drive a car or a truck. You can come in any vehicle.”
For more information on the event, call Stumpf at 717468-6197 or Hecht at 717283-6379.

Hundreds of motorcycles will take to the streets on New Year’s Day for a ride to benefit veterans.
Kendric Bert, chair of the committee. “It takes a lot of people to make this happen,” he remarked. “This church is very community oriented.” Along with making and preparing food, church members work as servers and greeters during the meal.
“We have a sign by the entrance for people to come in, and we decorate the gym for the meal,” said Funck, noting that holiday music is also played during the meal. In the past, about 400 people have attended the dinner.
The church members are active year-round in communi-
ty projects, including holding a harvest fest in the fall, Bert said. “This meal is an extension of our mission to serve the community,” he noted. “Our leadership promotes community involvement.”
Although the meal is free, donations of nonperishable items will be accepted at the door for the Mount Joy Food Bank. Reservations are requested for the meal, but are not required, and walk-ins are welcome. For more information or to register, visit https://cross roadsbic.com/christmas-meal -2022 or call the church office at 717-653-1616.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Pennsylvania recently named Tippetts/Weaver (T/Wa) Architects of Lancaster as the recipient of the 2022 Architecture Firm Award.
This is the first time since its inception in 2013 that the award has been given to a firm with a female founder. Wendy H. Tippetts is one of the two founding partners of T/Wa, and for more than 30 years she has led the design direction and culture of the firm.
The Architecture Firm (of the Year) Award recognizes a Pennsylvania firm whose passion and practice have produced notable architecture for at least a decade. Deserving firms have demonstrated excellence in design and leadership through any combination of the following criteria: the breadth and/or depth of their portfolio, a healthy firm culture, influence on the practice of architecture and exemplary outcomes for clients and/or society.
T/Wa was chosen from a pool of
four nominees submitted to the committee by the nearly 3,000 members of AIA Pennsylvania. T/Wa is not only the first firm from central Pennsylvania to have been chosen for the award, but also the smallest.
Working in the small cities, towns and rural places of central Pennsylvania, T/Wa mixes a modern aesthetic with an historical context. The firm’s projects include the Fulton Theatre expansion and Actor’s Housing; the Lancaster Science Factory; the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design; Lancaster Conservancy in Lancaster; Historic Fairmount affordable housing; Keystone Kidspace; St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in York; Newville Town Center mixed-use housing/commercial in Newville; Bucknell University; Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Lewisburg; and numerous residences, including new construction, renovation and adaptive reuse across the area.
In its 35-year history, T/Wa has been recognized with more than 50
awards, including design awards from the Central Pennsylvania AIA Chapter and from 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania, multiple annual awards from Preservation Pennsylvania for historic and adaptive reuse projects and many awards from the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County, Historic Trust of Cumberland County and Historic York, among others.
The firm of 10 includes six registered architects. It has pursued projects to address issues of inequity, including affordable housing, public access to health care and minoritybased community enterprises. In the last five years, $300,000 of in-kind services have been donated to nonprofits.
The team members participate in volunteer activities and events,
assist local nonprofits and serve on boards and committees. In addition, T/Wa members are active in the Central Pennsylvania AIA Chapter, including two team members who have served as president of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter Board of Directors.
For more information about T/Wa, visit www.tippettsweaver.com.
