Since 2014, Northwest EMS has been collecting toys for the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program. Working with 24 partner locations, including its EMS stations in Manheim and Elizabethtown, Northwest EMS collected toys from earlier this fall through December, when the donations were delivered to the Toys for Tots distribution warehouse.

“ We delivered more than 60 boxes,” said Lori Shenk, community outreach manager of Northwest EMS, noting that Toys for Tots will distribute the toys to 480 families through more than 50

around the Rooster W oodshop at Masonic Villages, Jim Smith and Clarence “Brock” Brockman are like two kids in a candy store. Their excitement grows with each piece of equipment they show off. Their eyes gleam as they recall the projects

they’ve completed and the ones in progress. And they are not alone. All of the 35 members of the woodshop share a passion for creativity, handson work and quality craftsmanship, Smith said. “We are all serious woodworkers,” he remarked. “We all take great pride in our work.”

Masonic Villages has had a woodshop on its grounds since 1963. In

1991, the shop relocated to a renovated chicken house, and in 2016, it moved to its current 8,700-squarefoot building, funded primarily by resident Robert Umbaugh. The facility features workstations for each member; various equipment, including band saws, lathes, radial arm saws, sanders and joiners; a finishing room, complete with a spray booth;

and a dust-collection system that keeps the mess to a minimum.

State-of-the-art equipment includes safety features such as a SawStop, which prevents users from encountering the blade. “You can’t hurt yourself on this,” Smith said. “Well, you can, but you’d have to be trying pretty hard. It’s nice for us old geezers.”

interim rector the Rev. Julian Eibin.

The congregation will sing most of the carols, led by Karl E. Moyer at the organ.

Robert Moilanen, Edward Cardwell, and Scott Fouhrman will sing the parts of the three kings in John Henry Hopkins’ carol “We Three Kings of Orient Are,” with the congregation singing the refrain and the final stanza. Tara Johnson and Fouhrman will sing the final incarnation hymn, “Of the Father’s Love Begotten.”

churches, missions and shelters. She added that Toys for Tots was short toys, particularly in the 9 to 12 age group and that it needed to spend more than $57,000 to buy toys to fill that need. “In addition to the 60-plus boxes of toys Northwest EMS and our supporting partners collected, I was able to give them nearly

$1,400 in checks and cash donations from the community,” Shenk stated.

Starting a Toys for Tots drive was a natural fit for the station, Shenk remarked. “One of our focuses is to be a part of our communities and to interact with our communities,” she shared. “We thought this was a great way to do that. We’re all working together to support the people in our community.” In addition to the toy drive, the station collects food for food banks in Elizabethtown and Manheim and supports Child Life teams at Penn State Health’s Children’s Hospital and Lancaster General Hospital’s pediatric unit by collecting toys, books, games and other small items for children who are in the hospital.

For the toy drive, Shenk obtained boxes from Toys for Tots, distributed them throughout the communities served by the station and then collected the full boxes. “I also have a traveling box that I take to public events like the Santa 5K that was held in December in Manheim or to 1st Thursdays in Manheim,” she said.

On Dec. 12, volunteers gathered at the station at 60 W. Colebrook St. in Manheim to pack the boxes of toys into ambulances and a bus from Pleasant View Communities to take to the distribution center. Shenk noted that she’s always moved by the response from the community to the toy drive, even in the face of a pandemic.

“In 2020, we weren’t sure what we’d see, but we saw the most generosity yet, and then in 2021, we exceeded all previous years again,” she said. “This year has also been very successful. The generosity in this community is overwhelming.”

Donegal Presbyterian Church in Mount Joy makes the perfect spot for a concert series, said church member Debra Ronning. “The church is located on a beautiful historic site,” she said. “We recently celebrated our 300th anniversary. There is a grand piano and a tracker organ. The wooden case of the organ was built from the ‘witness tree’ that stood outside the church.” Inspired by the church’s history, Ronning created Music at Donegal.

The three-concert series will debut on Sunday, Jan. 8, at 3 p.m. and will feature duo

pianists Justin Badgerow and Ronning, both faculty members at Elizabethtown College. The program will include Ravel’s “La Valse,” and Kapustin’s “Sinfonietta” as well as solo works by Chopin and Roldan.

The concert series will continue on Sunday, March 5, at 3 p.m., when Rizzetta’s Tones will entertain. The group perf orms Celtic and folk music with a variety of instruments, including dulcimers, whistles, flute and guitar.

The series will wrap up on Sunday, April 16, at 3 p.m., when the Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster will perform. “(They) will glorify

Jesus Christ through choral singing,” Ronning stated. “They will perform a solo program as well as interact with the audience with group singing.”

Ronning plans to make Music at Donegal an annual event with a variety of concerts each year. “One will be f ocused on celebrating our Celtic heritage, another about Christian choral or instrumental music as well as a classical or chamber performance,” she said.

Founded in 1721, Donegal Presbyterian Church shares an ancestral heritage with a church in Rathneeny, Ireland. The “witness tree” that once stood on the grounds was the

spot where church members met in 1777, when George Washington sent a message asking for men to muster and travel to Philadelphia for the Revolutionary War effort. The tree had to be cut down in 1991 due to disease, but the congregation used its wood to make offering plates, bowls, bells and more, including the organ case.

All concerts are open to the public and will be held at the church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy. There is no admission fee, but a freewill offering will be received. For more information, contact Ronning at ronnindd20@gmail.com or 717-413-7867.

Each member brings his or her (currently, there is one female member) particular interest and skill to the shop. Both Smith and Brockman enjoy cabinet and furniture making. Other members like to turn wood, while others are into scroll and fretwork. A small store at the entrance to the woodshop is open to the public and showcases items for sale, created by members. Items include bowls, clocks, gavels, games, toys, cabinets, bird houses, tables and chairs. The members will complete custom orders by request and also offer repairs.

Members of the woodshop must be residents of Masonic Villages and must go through a vetting process. “Each member has to have experience with woodworking because of the equipment we use and the potential risk and danger in operating it,” Smith explained. Currently, the group’s youngest member is in his 60s, and Brockman, at age 97, is the oldest member. When members need ideas for projects, they often turn to Brockman, the club’s vice president, for suggestions.

Brockman said the woodshop gives him an outlet for

The woodshop is self-supporting, with members buying the wood, including sapele, cherry, oak, poplar, walnut, maple and pine. Any extra money the shop makes is donated to charities on the Masonic campus.

As for their favorite pieces they’ve ever made, both men said they can’t pick one. “There is always something that’s better,” Smith said, noting that each project turns out nicer than the last one. “Our favorite projects are the ones we’re working on right now.”

The Rooster Woodshop is located at 1 Umbaugh Drive, Elizabethtown. The showroom is open to the public from 8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays and 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays.

MLK Breakfast To Feature Return Speaker

The 35th annual Crispus Attucks Community Center MLK Breakfast will be held from 7 to 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, returning to an in-person gathering at Millersville University with the addition of a livestream option. The event will be held at Marauder Courts at the Student Memorial Center on Shenks Lane. The event’s master of ceremonies will be Jeremy Jenkins from WGALTV. Pedro Rivera, president of Thaddeus Stevens College, is this year’s honorary event chair.

The event is a time for the community to come together, to foster relationships, to dialogue around the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., and to confront issues of inequity and injustice. This event, the center’s largest fundraiser, annually raises $100,000 - nearly one-third of

the center’s yearly budget.

Marc Lamont Hill, who previously spoke at the 2018 MLK Breakfast, will present “And How Are the Children … Now?” “And how are the children?” is a traditional greeting passed amongst the Masai in Kenya. The greeting acknowledges the high value of children and their wellbeing, and it acts as a measure of how the community and society is faring. The goal is to always be able to answer the greeting with “All the children are well.” Hill will speak about how people can collectively work to build a better community and world, one where they can say, “All the children are well.”

A Philadelphia native, Hill is currently the host of BET News and a political contributor for CNN. He has received numer-

ous awards from the National Association of Black Journalists, GLAAD, and the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. He is the Steve Charles Professor of Media, Cities, and Solutions at Temple University.

Prior to that, he held positions at Columbia University and Morehouse College. He is a founding board member of the nonprofit organization My5th, as well as a board member and organizer of the Philadelphia Student Union. Hill also works closely with the ACLU Drug Reform Project, focusing on drug informant policy. He received his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, and he is the author or co-author of several books.

New this year, three ticket options will be available in the spirit of access and inclusion. These ticket options are an in-

Notice is hereby given that on or about December 19, 2022, Lancaster Landfill, LLC. will file an Application for a Major Permit Modification (Application) with the Southcentral Regional office of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP). This Application is for the Lancaster Landfill, located in Mount Joy Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania is being submitted to allow the use of the Closure Turf® system as an alternate to the currently permitted geosynthetic final cover system at the facility. As the site has exhausted all on-site soils, currently all operational, construction and closure soils need to be imported to the site for use. Use of the ClosureTurf® system will greatly reduce the required soil volume for landfill closure while providing an effective, durable and low-maintenance final cover. This system is currently approved for use at several landfill facilities throughout the Commonwealth. There are no changes to the approved operating hours or the amount of waste being accepted at the facility as part of this application.

Copies of the Application are available for review and copying at the PADEP Southcentral Regional office, 909 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania 17110, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. An appointment must be made with the Southcentral Regional office to review the Application. A fee for copying may be charged by PADEP. Copies of the application will also be submitted to Mount Joy Township, Lancaster County, the Lancaster County Health Department, and the Lancaster County Planning Commission. The host municipality and county may submit recommendations for permit conditions, revisions, application approval or disapproval, and other comments to PADEP within sixty (60) days of their receipt of the application. PADEP will also accept and consider comments from the public during the permit review period. Comments should be sent to the Regional Solid Waste Manager, PADEP Southcentral Regional Office, 909 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania 17110.

Participants should bring their own water bottles, and there will be a bag check. Race-day registration and check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the park’s Pavilion 22 (Kiwanis Lodge).

Funds raised through the 2023 race will help finance the group’s “green project” grant program, which has awarded grants of up to $500 to 71 Lancaster County organizations over the past seven years. The money also will help support the group’s free-tothe-public outdoor activities and educational programs.

Church To Donate Christmas Offering

St. Paul’s Church in Elizabethtown is once again supporting the community by donating its entire Christmas offering to two nonprofit groups. Over the past six years, more than $50,000 has been donated to organizations for special initiatives. These community organizations include the Elizabethtown Police Department, Elizabethtown Area School District, Northwest EMS, Elizabethtown Public Library, ECHOS Homeless Shelter, and Compassion International.

This year, the recipients of the church’s offering will be Camp Ladybug, run by GEARS (Greater Elizabethtown Area Recreation and Community

Services), and a mental health screening and crisis response counseling program through ECHOS (Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services).

Camp Ladybug aims to provide a fun atmosphere for children and adults with special needs where campers may build socialization skills and participate in recreational activities. Activities include games, visits to local recreation sites, and learning.

The crisis response counseling program is a partnership between ECHOS and the Elizabethtown Area School District. The program provides on-call crisis counseling to middle and high school

students with suicidal ideation and self-harm. ECHOS counselors meet with the student, provide crisis counseling, engage in outreach to the student’s parent/guardian, and ensure supportive services for long-term stability.

Contributions will be accepted through Saturday, Dec. 31.

Donations may be dropped off at St. Paul’s Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. Donors may also give by mail. For more information on donating or the benefiting organizations, visit www.st pauls.faith and scroll down to click on “Christmas Eve Outreach.” Information is also available by calling the church at 717-367-1889.

Five area students were selected as recipients of the 2022 Lancaster Medical Society Foundation scholarship awards. The competitive process, which makes selections based on character, motivation, academic achievement, and financial need, included submissions from applicants throughout Lancaster County. As part of the application, students were required to write an essay explaining why they have chosen to pursue a career in medicine. The selection committee chose the awardees through a blind review process.

This year’s recipients are Launick Saint-Fort of Ephrata, Nicole Hanselman of Manheim, Hannah Kuntz from Elizabethtown, Rhea Sullivan from Landisville and Kevin Chao of Lancaster.

Saint-Fort, a trauma research coordinator, graduate of Penn State Berks and first-year medical student at the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine, was awarded $4,500. For SaintFort, whose younger years were spent as a child slave in Haiti, medical school and a potential career as a physician were beyond her wildest dreams. She noted that in childhood, she contracted various illnesses that could have been prevented with quality medical care, which was not available to her.

Hanselman, an Elmira College graduate and research specialist currently in her first year at Saint James School of Medicine in Illinois, received a $3,500 award. She explained that her passion to pursue medicine was conceived in a small orphanage in Vietnam, where she lived after losing her parents and oldest sister. Placed in the orphanage at age 7, Hanselman was assigned to care for the sickest babies, but could only do so much to ease their pain and suffering.

Kuntz, a former medical assistant with AmeriCorps and a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, is a first-year student at the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine. Her passion for medicine was fostered through her volunteer experiences working with underserved populations in Lancaster city and later in Rochester, N.Y.

Sullivan, a fourth-year M.D. and Ph.D. student at the Pennsylvania College of Medicine and a graduate of Pennsylvania State University Schreyer Honors College,

shared that her decision to pursue a career in medicine came after experiences she had in college, including witnessing the deaths of both a fellow college student and then a neighbor as a result of addiction.

Chao, a former medical scribe and volunteer smoking cessation counselor, is a Saint Joseph’s University (formerly University of the Sciences) graduate and second-year student at Drexel University College of Medicine.

Chao’s choice to pursue medicine grew from childhood experiences with the health care system.

Born with a heart abnormality that was incredibly difficult to manage, he credits his parents, pediatrician and cardiologist for their tireless care, giving him a life that he would not otherwise have had.

Chao, Kuntz and Sullivan were all awarded $2,000 scholarships.

Founded in 1991, the Lancaster Medical Society Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization that was formed to grant scholarships to students from Lancaster County who are accepted at or continuing a medical degree at an accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical school.

The scholarship foundation is supported by the Lancaster County medical community, through hospitals and health systems, group practices, individual medical society members, local businesses and Lancasterarea residents. Since its inception, more than $282,000 in scholarships have been given to local students.
