Studies In Session:
Establishing A Positive Homework Environment Though it might not be something students look forward to, homework is an essential element of the learning process. Homework allows youths to apply lessons they have learned while giving educators a chance to determine if students are grasping concepts. Students often seek their parents’ help when doing homework, but parents can start helping even before their children get home. Creating a homework environment where kids can concentrate and put forth their best effort is a great way to help them throughout the school year. The following are a few tips for parents who want to ensure that home is as conducive a place as possible for students to learn and do their best. • Find a quiet space with little or no distractions. A quiet place in the home where children can concentrate is essential for doing homework. While a youngster’s bedroom might have sufficed years ago, today’s children and young adults
tend to have bedrooms that mimic the showroom of an electronics store. If youths have televisions, video game consoles, and stereos in their bedrooms, then it is most likely not the best environment for them to study. They might easily grow distracted, so find a quiet area where they can focus solely on their studies. Such areas should be clear of items like a television, telephones, video game consoles, and other gadgets that can compromise a student’s focus. Make such areas offlimits to cellular phones and block social media websites from computers in use so children are not tempted to spend study time chatting with friends online. If a child’s study area is not in a separate room of the house, parents should avoid turning on the television until studies have been completed. • Designate a time for homework each day. Another way to make your home more amenable to homework is to designate a time each day when youths will study. Let other members of the household know that this is a quiet time in the house. Once students get comfortable in this routine, they likely will not need much prodding to do their homework, and this designated quiet time in the household can be a relaxing time for other household members as well.

• Have healthy snacks available. Few people do their best work on an empty stomach, so if youths will be doing their homework immediately after school, make sure to have some healthy snacks on hand. When at school, students tend to eat lunch earlier than adults, so they are liable to be hungry when they arrive home from school in the afternoon. Stock up on fresh fruit. Less healthy snacks might satisfy youngsters’ hunger pangs, but such snacks may also make children drowsy, negatively affecting their ability to concentrate. • Let youths know their work will be checked nightly. Parents who want to create an environment where their children approach homework seriously should let their children know work will be checked each night and any assignments completed incorrectly will have to be redone. This prevents children from rushing through assignments without giving their best effort. Few youngsters look forward to homework. While parents might not be able to fully change their children’s attitudes, they can change their home to make it as positive a study environment as possible.

Distraction Detox reassuring youths that they do not need to be experts to contribute. Even if students’ participation is limited to asking questions rather than answering them, encouraging youths to raise their hands should keep them involved in the subject. • Consider playing games designed to improve attention and focus. Games designed to improve attention can be a fun way for parents to help their youngsters conquer their concentration issues. For example, the creators behind Lumosity.com collaborated with researchers from universities around the world in an effort to design games to improve visual attention in people of various ages and backgrounds. Few children and young adults are not enamored with games, and games to improve focus and attention may help youths without making them feel as though they are back in a classroom. Parents can speak with their child’s teacher to determine which games might be best.

Concerned parents can take the following steps in the classroom and at home to improve students’ academic performance. • Speak to your child’s teacher about seating assignments. Students who find it difficult to focus in the classroom may benefit from new seating assignments. Windows or high-traffic areas of the classroom, such as doorways, can compromise a student’s ability to focus. In addition, the back of the classroom is not the ideal spot for youngsters or teens who find it difficult to focus, since students in the back are not as easy to engage as those sitting in the front of the room. • Encourage participation. Many teachers recognize the value of active participation in the classroom, but youths who are struggling may shy away from participating or become embarrassed. Parents and teachers can work with students to encourage them to take an active part in lessons,

Meal Makeover:
Tips for Creating a Healthier Lunch • Purchase a new lunch container. New innovative lunch containers can make separating components of school lunches easy. Few kids want to dig into a brown paper sack and pull out something squished and unrecognizable. Partitioned lunch boxes enable you to pack different items together but still store them separately. The divisions also aid in remembering to include foods from the basic food groups, such as a fruit, a vegetable, protein, a starch, and a dairy item. • Create a favorite foods list. Once the list is done, brainstorm on how to make the foods healthier. For example, if chicken nuggets make the list, prepare homemade nuggets with white meat chunks that are baked, not fried. • Be inventive. Stick fruit on skewers or serve it with a low-fat dipping sauce or caramel. Little sandwiches and little burgers may also appeal to a child’s sense of fun. Consider, too, cutting sandwiches into star shapes or into the form of an animal. Cookie cutters can make this a breeze. • Hide healthy ingredients in dessert. There are entire recipe books that teach how to mix fruits and vegetables into desserts to increase dietary value. Everything from spinach to beets has been included in items like cake, cookies, and brownies. Youths can enjoy a sweet treat while also scoring some added nutrients. • Don’t let the time of day dictate the menu. If a child or teen loves bagels, choose whole wheat bagels and add an egg on top for a nutritious lunch. Serve with low-fat milk and a gelatin dessert that contains chunks of fruit to round out the meal.
The benefits of a healthy diet are clear and well documented. In addition to providing the nutrients a growing body needs, consuming a balanced diet helps children and young adults maintain a healthy weight. Children attending school will eat at least one meal away from home each day. A healthy lunch provides sound nutrition to give students the energy to do well in both school and throughout the day. Youngsters and teens who do not eat well at lunch may have difficulty concentrating or feel sluggish or tired. There are many ways to guarantee students enjoy more diverse offerings and better nutrition. Some tips to consider include the following: • Offer nutrient-dense foods. Foods should contribute to the daily recommended amounts of protein, iron, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Provide a selection of foods, such as lean protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, to provide essential nutrients. Nutrient-dense foods will also help students feel fuller longer. • Limit fat intake. Avoid foods that harbor saturated fats, rather than polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Saturated fats can lead to obesity and clogged arteries. The American Heart Association recommends youths get no more than 25 to 35 percent of their calories from
fat. Fish, nuts and olives are healthy fat sources. • Let youths select options. Allow youngsters and teens to pick some of the healthy foods they will be eating. Giving children a say in their diets will make them more likely to enjoy their lunches and cut back on snack foods. Eating meals regularly will keep energy levels up during school and make youths less likely to reach for unhealthy snacks to fill hunger gaps. • Make small changes that add up. Switching from white bread to whole grain breads and opting for low-fat dairy products instead of full-fat dairy products can make a world of difference. Children may not notice a change in texture or flavor, and many of youths’ favorite foods, such as pizza and macaroni and cheese, can be made with healthier ingredients. • Remember, beverages count. Giving children a healthy lunch and then packing a sugar-filled, highcalorie beverage negates your efforts. Calories from beverages can quickly add up. Water is always the best option. Low-fat milk and real fruit juice consumed in moderation also make healthy alternatives to sugary beverages. Offering healthy school lunches is an important step to raising healthy children. New guidelines and offerings make it easier for youths to get the nutrition they need for their growing bodies.

Welcome Back:
Smoothing the Transition From Summer to School The dawn of a new school year is an exciting time. Youths may not want to say goodbye to days spent lounging by the pool or playing outdoors, but such disappointment is often tempered by the prospect of being reunited with friends. For parents, getting children ready for a new school year is about more than garnering supplies, updating wardrobes, or organizing carpools. Reacclimating youngsters to a school-year routine after a relaxing summer is a significant undertaking. Here are a handful of ways to get a head start: • Establish a routine. Summer vacations typically lack the structure of the school year, and that lack of structure can help youths unwind and make the most of summer freedom. But as the season starts to wind down, parents can begin to reintroduce some structure into their children’s lives to make the transition back to school go more smoothly. Plan
morning activities so youths can readjust to waking up early each day. In addition, if the family has deviated from a set meal schedule, revert to serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the time it is typically served during the school year. • Take youths along when shopping for school supplies. If you plan to buy your child or teen a new computer or other supplies for the upcoming school year, take him or her along on shopping trips. Older youths may have more details on their precise needs, and children of any age who choose their supplies might become more excited about returning to school. • Monitor or assign summer reading. Many students are given summer reading lists to keep their minds sharp over the summer and prepare them for upcoming coursework. Parents should monitor their children’s progress on such reading lists and discuss books when possible. If you have the time, read the books along with
them. If students were not assigned summer reading lists at the end of the school year, assign your own books and offer a reward upon completion. Many local libraries also offer reading programs and incentives. • Encourage students to sign up for extracurricular activities. Many schoolage athletes get a head start on the new school year by trying out for sports teams. Such tryouts often commence a week or two before school is scheduled to begin, and this can help youths ease their way into a new year. But even nonathletes can begin pursuing extracurricular activities before the first school bell rings. Theater programs may begin auditions prior to opening day, and you can also encourage interested youngsters to attend orientation meetings. Students who are not attending a new building or school can volunteer to help out and assist incoming students.
