CrossNet Schedules First Drive-In Dinner And Auction By Ann Mead Ash

For several years, CrossNet Ministries has held an annual evening gala in the fall in the beautiful gardens at Garden Spot Village (GSV). This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers reimagined the event several times before hitting upon the idea of a Drive-In Dinner and Auction fundraiser. “We are excited to offer this safe and fun event for the community, said Meredith Dahl, director of CrossNet Ministries. “It has been a challenging season for everyone, and we are looking forward to having a fun, memorable evening. The dinner and auction will be held outside at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Saturday, Sept. 19. The meal will be served beginning at 6:30 p.m. Attendee’s cars will be spaced so that they are safely socially distanced

in Lot 9, which is the same lot that has been utilized for the gala. Dahl noted that event coordinators will be present to direct people to park. According to Dahl, attendees can choose to stay in their vehicles or bring lawn chairs to sit in front of their car. She advised those who take part to dress comfortably. In the field adjacent to the lot will be a stage with an LED screen. Dahl said that the stage will be high enough to make it easy for spectators to see. In addition, attendees will be directed to tune to a specific radio setting to easily hear the event, which will include live musical entertainment. “It will be upbeat music, a mix of ’50s and some newer songs with a fun vibe, said Dahl. Appetizers; beverages, including soda and lemonade; and dinner will be served to attendees in their cars. The meal will be prepared by GSV in partnership with another food provider. When the Mountville Fire Company (MFC) reluctantly canceled its annual carnival in May, it turned to food trucks to make up the lost revenue. “Food - that’s what a lot of people come (to the carnival) for, related Peter Taraborelli, MFC public information officer and firefighter. Due to the short notice and the safety guidelines in place at the time, the food truck event included primarily carnival vendors and was operated as a drive-through. Still, the turnout was encouraging. “We wound up having a successful event. We raised $13,000, Taraborelli said.

MHALC Launches CMAP By Ann Mead Ash

Meredith Dahl (left), director of CrossNet Ministries, and Carl Edwards, director of development and ministries with CrossNet, are preparing for the organization’s first Drive-In Dinner and Auction, to be held at Garden Spot Village on Saturday, Sept. 19, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Planning A Successful Food Truck Event

During the COVID-19 shutdown, the Steinman Foundation wanted to respond to the needs of the community. One way the organization chose to do that was to focus on mental health, with a goal of making sure community residents felt supported in unprecedented times. The foundation reached out to Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) to bring a Community Mental Health Assistance Plan (CMAP) to local workers. “They partnered with us because we had relationships with service providers and we’re able to support individuals beyond the project, said Kim McDevitt, executive director of MHALC. MHALC turned to Philhaven/WellSpan as a consultant. “WellSpan runs an Employee Assistance See MHALC pg 2

The 2019 carnival generated $18,000, so MFC opted to host a second food truck event in July to make up the shortfall. “We wanted to capitalize on the fact that people were still bored, stuck local, still not going on vacation, Taraborelli said. “We had time to plan, so we wanted to make sure we brought in some local favorites that people were asking about. Unfortunately, rain on the first night and high heat and humidity on the second negatively impacted the proceeds from the July event. However, MFC is considering making a food truck fundraiser a regular part of its schedule beginning fall 2021. “People really do love food truck events, Taraborelli remarked. “Lancaster County seems to be the mecca for some unique food trucks. See Food Truck Event pg 5

Mountville Fire Company has held two food truck fundraisers this year, with the first one having a drive-through format. Food truck events can be fun neighborhood activities if organized and promoted well.

Local families now have an opportunity to receive support and educational services all without leaving their homes thanks to online programming being offered by the Family Life Education Department at COBYS Family Services, Lancaster. Among the virtual programs being offered is a kinship support program, which is taking place on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. through Aug. 19. The program is open to kinship caregivers - those who are raising a relative’s child. During the sessions, grandparents, aunts and uncles and others who have taken on the new role of caregiver can talk about topics specific to kinship care and network with other people in similar situations. “We are doing everything virtually to break down time barriers. These families are overwhelmed because they are taking care of children they were not expecting to take care of lovingly and open-armed, said Abby Keiser, director of Family Life Services. “We are able to provide the services; they don’t have to bring their children Abby Keiser, director, recently announced that the Family Life Education Department at to a building. They can even be in pajamas.

In early May, she began researching the best way to implement the program, amassing a list of nearly 70 providers, which was reduced to 10 providers based on grant applications. The final list represents a variety, from groups to individuals, with providers that offer bilingual services, those who focus on seniors, one whose specialty is the Plain population, and more. “We wanted to make sure we (reached) everybody in the county,” Thompson said. By early June, Thompson was holding online training sessions for the providers to let them know what was expected and to explain the documentation they needed to complete so that MHALC will have the demographic information needed to continue the program. increase in police calls, and crisis outreach is starting to tick up now,” she said. Lancaster County residents who are in need of professional support may call MHALC at 717397-7461 on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. for an intake form. “You will talk to one of our navigators who will help you identify a therapist,” said McDevitt. Thompson will recommend a therapist, and CMAP will provide three free confidential counseling sessions. The client will call the provider for an appointment, but MHALC will send out a resource packet to the client and follow up to provide additional support as needed. Thompson said that if the client wishes to continue after three sessions, she has a list of insurances the providers will accept. “If they don’t have insurance, we are partnering with Lancaster Osteopathic Health for their copay assistance program,” said Thompson. “That information is included in the resource packet I send out.” According to Thompson, more than 30% of people in the United States experience anxiety on a regular basis, ranging from fear of insects to extreme social anxiety. She noted that anxiety and depression are common responses to a pandemic, but isolation during a season when people are used to being outdoors with others compounds those issues. “We can’t function on a typical seasonal level,” Thompson said. “A lot of parents don’t know how to handle the financial aspect of going back to work and (supporting their children’s schooling). There are a lot of questions.” The partnership has set a goal of helping to alleviate these issues by providing professional support to those workers in need. “Having someone outside your family to talk to can help,” said Thompson. Readers who want to know more about the program may visit https://mhalancaster.org/our -programs/cmap-essential-workers.

Food Truck Event from pg 1 While organizers cannot command good weather, folks who want to host food trucks whether one or a dozen - can take specific steps to make sure their event is beneficial to everyone involved. Danielle Landis is the event manager for New Holland eatery Lickity Split and the scheduler for its food truck. She is also a member of her homeowners association (HOA) team that arranges for food trucks to participate in popup events. “I’ve learned a lot about how to make it go well from both perspectives, Landis said. Landis suggested that prospective food truck hosts consider two things as they begin planning: Will the event be successful for the community itself, and what will make it a good event for the business? Hosts need to have some organizational skills, as a food truck event involves more than contacting a business and asking it to sell food on a residential street or in a parking lot. It is important to get an idea of what types of food will be of interest to neighborhood residents. For example, a dog treats vendor would not be relevant at an event in an apartment complex with a no-pets policy. Additionally, organizers need to make sure to thoroughly spread the word. Yard signs, mailbox posters, Facebook groups and events, the NextDoor app, and local media are all ways to advertise a food truck event. With those plans at the ready, folks may reach out to vendors. The more specific the request, the better, Landis said, adding, “We have gotten a lot of messages from people who say, ‘Come out to our neighborhood. We have a lot of kids,’ (but that doesn’t tell us much). Typically, a vendor needs to know the address where the event will be held, the number of houses or residents in an area,

the desired dates and times, and what kinds of advertising will be used. It also helps to include a screenshot of the neighborhood with a pin where the truck will park so that vendors can see if the ground is level enough and if there is space for people to wait safely, Landis said. Other tips for hosting a food truck event: •Discuss the event with local officials - both municipal authorities and law enforcement - and obtain their support. •Always get permission from a property owner to park a truck. The Lickity Split truck will often park in front of the contact person’s home. •Make sure the street or driveway is wide and straight so there is room for the truck. •Check for water/electric requirements. The majority of food trucks are self-contained, but some are not. •Provide a menu in advance so customers can plan ahead and build excitement for their order. •Consider offering preorders for safety. •Use duct tape or chalk to mark the ground so customers can stay 6 feet away from each other. •Ask customers to approach the window one at a time. •Masks should be worn by customers to protect food truck employees, who are required to wear masks. •Schedule enough people to help in areas like greeting guests, removing trash, and helping with parking. •Bring some fun to it. “This is such an awesome way for a community to build connection with each other,â€? Landis said. “My favorite part is seeing people engaging and connecting with each other, and that’s what people have been missing this summer. Food is always a great way to bring people together.â€?

Gerhart Earns Scholarship Eighteen individuals were recently awarded scholarships from the Merit Shop Training and Research Center (MSTRC). The $20,850 in scholarships for the 2020-21 academic year helps students entering a career path in the construction industry. One of the recipients, Kayla Gerhart of East Earl, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship to aid in the pursuit of a degree in residential construction management. The purpose of the Merit Shop Construction Scholarship Program, sponsored by ABC Keystone

Hospice Labor Day Auction To Be Held Virtually By Francine Fulton

and administered by the MSTRC, is to assist individuals seeking to further their education in careers in construction. To be eligible, applicants must be applying to or attending a trade school, college, or university program that is directly related to a construction career. This includes skilled trades, engineering, architecture, and construction management. Students are evaluated on recommendations, academic achievement, initiative, a written essay, and community and extracurricular activities.

Traditionally, Hospice & Community Care (HCC) holds its annual Labor Day Auction at the Solanco Fairgrounds in Quarryville, and the event features nearly 10,000 items on the auction block and a variety of food selections sold on-site. Nearly 3,500 people attend the two-day event annually. This year, however, because of the coronavirus pandemic, the event has been scaled down and will be held virtually from Tuesday, Sept. 1, through Tuesday, Sept. 15. “This is our 26th year, and we’ve held it in different places over the years because it has grown exponentially,” said Coco Minardi, donor relations manager. “The first auction we had was in an outdoor area at a fire company. We made $1,800. Last year we raised $877,000. It is the backbone of our fundraising operation here at hospice.” Items featured at the auction are donated by the community. “Typically, we will start collecting auction items the day after the auction for the following year,” Minardi

explained. “We have a wonderful generous sponsor who has a warehouse space and they donate that. Sometimes we get high-end items like jewelry and original artwork, and those are stored in a secure location at hospice.” Discussions about the fate of the 2020 auction began in March soon after the stay-athome order was issued. “ We went out to a remote working location on March 17 and we talked about this incessantly from that time until (now),” said Minardi. “We raise nearly $1 million, so it was not an easy decision to make. People have been coming for years and we did not want to give up on that.” On June 10, the decision was made to hold the auction virtually. This year, the auction will feature about 1,000 items. “We will auction off higher-end items quilts, artwork, jewelry, vacation getaways, gift baskets and sports memorabilia,” Minardi said. “We are in the process of photographing those items and building the website.” As part of the process, people will be able to visit the website, click on the items they are interested in and then bid on them. “People will (have time) to peruse and get comfortable with this

More Than $1 Million Donated To Children’s Hospitals The Giant Company announced on July 31 that more than $1 million was raised as part of its summer campaign in support of local Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals. The campaign, which kicked off June 1, marks the highest fundraising effort for the organization in the history of the company. A partner of the nonprofit organization for almost 25 years, Giant has recently introduced several new ways for customers to support their local CMN Hospital beyond making a donation during checkout. Customers can now make donations by rounding up their purchase at self-checkout, donating CHOICE Rewards points and purchasing special reusable bags with a portion of each sale going to the charity. The company will continue raising funds for CMN Hospitals through the end of August. In March, to help provide assistance for the youngest members of the community during the coronavirus pandemic, Giant donated $250,000 to support COVID-19 mitigation efforts. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Children’s National Hospital, Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and Penn State Children’s Hospital each received $50,000. The Giant Company is known as one of the top 15 fundraisers in the country for CMN Hospitals. Customers, team members and vendor partners have donated more than $48 million over the past 23 years in support of children’s health at local CMN Hospitals, including CHOP; Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.; Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital in Danville; Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore; Penn State Children’s Hospital in Hershey; Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital; University of Virginia Children’s Hospital in Charlottesville, Va.; and WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital in Morgantown, W. Va.

All proceeds from the virtual auction and donations from corporate sponsors will benefit HCC, a nonprofit hospice provider serving patients and families at end of life since 1980. In 2019, the organization provided hospice, palliative and supportive care for nearly 7,000 patients and families. Nearly 9,000 adults, teenagers and children received grief support from the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss. Currently, the center’s support programs are being held virtually. Readers may visit www.hospicecommunity.org for more information. For more information about the auction, readers may visit www.LaborDayAuction.org or call 717-295-3900.

Participation in the virtual open house is free. Due to COVID-19 concerns, some 50-plus living campuses and agencies are not permitted to participate in live events, and some potential residents and clients are fearful of venturing out. Hosted by OLP Events, the 50plus Living virtual open house will enable interested individuals to virtually visit mature living communities and service providers online from the comfort of their home or office. Consumers considering their housing options will be able to browse the virtual open house, which showcases local housing, home care, and hospice organizations. Prospective residents and community and agency representatives from all over central Pennsylvania can log in and out of the event at will to share information and interact virtually. Throughout the 17-day online event, guests can learn about living and care options, connect with multiple living communities or care providers, view videos and/or photos of campuses, ask questions and have them answered on a personal basis, gain knowledge in order to make informed decisions, and make an appointment for an in-person tour when convenient. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank announced on July 20 that it is receiving a donation of $125,000 from Sheetz For the Kidz, a charitable organization driven by the employees of Sheetz Inc. to help provide hunger relief to children in 27 counties throughout central Pennsylvania through the food bank’s youth programs. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank helps to provide more than 2.5 million meals annually to children in need through its network of local agency partners, including food pantries, soup kitchens and meal programs. Since March, demand for the food bank’s services has increased more than 40% as families face financial uncertainty in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. In addition, many children throughout central Pennsylvania receive free or reduced-price lunches and breakfasts during the school year. With schools shut down since March due to COVID-19, many children have lost access to these meals. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of the Feeding America network, is one of 27 food

“More and more facilities, agencies, and organizations are becoming aware of the benefits of the human/animal interaction, and KPETS is a way to implement that benefit,” Gerth remarked. KPETS teams bring cheer to residents of retirement communities, provide a comforting distraction to cancer patients and other hospitalized individuals, encourage adults and children in all different types of therapy sessions, and support reluctant learners and struggling readers. “Visiting schools can be anything from reading programs to working with life skills or multiple disability classes. other communication technologies to stay in touch with their clients. Some teams recorded themselves reading stories with their pets, while others encouraged children to read to their own animals. Virtual meetings were held with hospital and school staff members to know they are being thought of. One team created a video featuring a day in the life of a therapy dog under quarantine for a life skills class. The students were curious to see how therapy dogs were being affected by the situation, Gerth said. Teams also made a special video for the Class of 2020 at Warwick High School. “We had a very special bond with this class two years ago when they lost three students within a few weeks,” Gerth said. “We wanted to wish them well, congratulate them, and let them know how proud we are of them and how honored we were to be a part of their lives during that most sad time.” With Pennsylvania beginning to reopen, KPETS is also considering how to begin to make visits again. Gerth asserted that guidelines will be in place to ensure the safety of the clients, volunteers, and pets. Any facility or organization that would like to host a KPETS team visit for the benefit of its staff members, clients, or students may submit a request at www.kpets.org. For insurance purposes and the safety and protection of all involved, visits cannot be in a private setting unless a third-party professional is present. KPETS welcomes additional volunteers, as the demand for its services is great. Interested individuals may apply on the aforementioned website. Also, individuals and organizations may partner with KPETS to ensure its continued operation. “KPETS does rely totally on community funding to provide our services free of charge,” Gerth explained. “Many of those we serve are nonprofits as well, making donations from businesses and private donors essential for KPETS’ sustainability.” Gerth noted that KPETS is not authorized to help anyone obtain emotional support animals. For more information about KPETS, readers may visit www.kpets.org or call 888-68KPETS (888-685-7387).
