NHAHS Plans Presentation About Iconic Farm Buildings By Ann Mead Ash

Back in the early fall, Steve Loewen, founding member of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS), saw on social media that the Star Barn Village at Stone Gables Estate, home of the historic Ironstone Ranch, would be open to the public on Columbus Day. “I saw advertised that the Star Barn could be visited by car (for a fee),” said Loewen, who was excited about the opportunity. “So I went, and I was totally blown away by what (property owner) David Abel has done,” said Loewen. “They were showing a video about the Star Barn, and you could see the detail and the meticulous restoration to keep the National Historic designation.”

Loewen recalled that Myrtle Tremblay painted a rendition of the Star Barn while living in New Holland. Tremblay, who taught herself to draw as a youth in Michigan, eventually attended a number of institutions in Chicago and New York to study art before moving to New Holland in 1952. Her works, for which she had received many awards, were displayed and sold throughout the county, often to help raise funds for local organizations. The NHAHS Museum has a number of her pieces, which were displayed during 2019. Loewen knows David, who owns the 275-acre Stone Gables Estate with his wife, Tierney, through business connections. Following his visit to the village, Loewen called David’s assistant to arrange a presentation in New Holland. A video presentation on the history and restoration of the Star Barn and the See NHAHS Presentation pg 10

Steve Loewen (left) and Don Horning (right), both representitives of the New Holland Area Historical Society, display a print of the Star Barn painting by Myrtle Tremblay. Horning was instrumental in bringing the Tremblay collection to the society’s museum. The Star Barn will be the subject of a video presentation at Garden Spot Village on Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.

A Tremendous Accomplishment RTCM Valentine Event To Include Marriage Seminar When Lancaster Bible College (LBC) By Ann Mead Ash

graduated more than 160 students on Dec. 13, 2019, Tracey Jones, who had earned her doctorate in leadership, was among them. Jones, daughter of Charlie “Tremendous” Jones and his wife, Gloria, is no stranger to LBC, but she was not an alumna … until now. “I have been a trustee of the school since 2010,” explained Tracey, who noted that she returned to Pennyslvania in 2008 when her father passed. She met Dr. Peter Teague and became involved in the capital campaign for the Teague Learning Commons, where the library named for her parents is located, and worked with development and fundraising for the Charles Frey Academic Center. “It was near and dear to my father and mother to support the school and scholarships,” said Tracey, who also took over her father’s publishing and speaking business when she See Tracey Jones pg 2

Postal Service Shares Snow Removal Tips

GOLD BUYING WE MAKE HOUSECALLS!

delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. Delivery of curtailed mail will be attempted the next delivery day. To do their part to keep letter carriers safe and to help them continue to offer consistent delivery service, customers should heed the following tips: All customers should keep their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. This includes the approach to and exit from the area, as well as sufficient space on both sides of curbside mailboxes. Customers receiving door delivery should ensure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside or rural delivery should remove snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers. Customers should keep in mind that painted porches and steps are particularly hazardous. While salting or rubber-backed mats help make them less slippery, customers should still clear the snow before a letter carrier arrives with the mail. In hazardous situations when delivery is suspended, customers should contact local postal officials to discuss ways to eliminate the hazard. Residents and businesses with blue collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice as well. According to the U.S. Postal Service, slips, trips, and falls are the leading cause of accidents among letter carriers. In addition to endangering the safety of the carrier, injuries to a letter carrier - or any visitor to a home - can result in costly liabilities to homeowners.

came back to the area. Tracey went to Word of Life Bible Institute in Pottersville, N.Y., for a year after graduating from high school. She then attended Houghton College in Houghton, N.Y., for a year before earning an associate degree at the New Mexico Military Institute. She received an appointment to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. She finished with a Bachelor of Science, graduating as a commissioned officer and working on fighter jets. She served in the first Gulf War and the Bosnian War, and she lived in England, Italy, Germany, and Turkey. She followed her service career by working for Applied Materials in Austin, Texas, while she earned a Master of Business Administration in global management from the University of Phoenix. When LBC instituted its doctoral program, Tracey decided to earn her doctorate. She entered the program at the end of August in 2015. Unfortunately, the timing was tumultuous. “I had just been through a shift with the business and lost my older brother,” recalled Tracey. “I came into it really broken.” Rather than becoming discouraged, Tracey found solace in her studies. “The dissertation program was a source of inspiration and encouragement and camaraderie,” said Tracey. “When you’re hurting as a leader (and) you talk to other leaders, and they say, ‘Keep the faith. We’re going through (this too),’ it is a sense of great comfort.” Tracey’s dissertation was titled “Leader Emergence in an Organizational Crisis - A Case Study of Follower Self-Efficacy.”

“Self-efficacy (means) motivation,” explained Tracey, who, as part of her research, studied a merger that almost did not occur. “In the merger, 90% of what went wrong could have been seen with due diligence,” she said, adding that she had a revelation about halfway through the program. “(I realized that) if you don’t have selfmotivated followers, (it doesn’t matter) if you’re the greatest leader in the world,” she said. “Leadership is a dance. I learned that leadership is not as important as finding good followers.” Going forward, Tracey hopes to use what she has learned to work with organizations that are thinking of going through a merger. “I’d like to do premerger counseling,” she said. “(A merger) is a professional marriage,” said Tracey who plans to marry in early 2020. “I would love to do organizational reconnaissance, and tell (companies) which employees are on board, which need to get on board, and which will never get on board. As human beings, we don’t always see the big picture.” LBC’s doctoral program students can complete the 30-credit program in as little as two years. Courses are delivered in a blended format, offering the flexibility of online education and the benefit of only one three-week residency component. Students complete the program in a cohort community of about a dozen students. Tracey took part in the fifth cohort. Information about the program and application materials are available at www.lbc.edu/capital/academics. Applications are currently being accepted.

With funding from USDA NIFA award number 201770020-27236, Penn State Extension educators from the Food Safety and Horticulture teams developed bilingual produce safety educational materials and delivered trainings to Latino fresh produce growers and farmworkers in Pennsylvania. Maria Gorgo-Gourovitch was the principal investigator of the grant. Other members of the team were Megan Chawner, Tara Baugher, Jeffrey Stoltzfus, Don Seifrit, Christi Graver, professor of food science Dr. Luke LaBorde, and now retired extension educator Lee Stivers. Congress entrusted the FDA to implement the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). This new law changed the food safety system from one that responds to contamination to one that aims to prevent it in the first place. Among the suite of new regulations issued under the law is “Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption” (USFDA, 2013), commonly known as the Produce Safety Rule. The Produce Safety Rule poses new regulatory

challenges to the fresh produce industry in Pennsylvania and across the country. Latino growers and farmworkers had an unmet need for accessible Food Safety and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) information, education, and resources. In order to provide short, easy-tounderstand information, the Extension focused its educational materials and trainings on topics such as personal hygiene, microorganisms, and sources of contamination during, before, and after harvest. The Extension team began by collecting, assessing, and archiving pre-existing educational materials related to FSMA and Farm Food Safety education available at the Penn State website. Team members identified gaps in programming in regard to content and methodology. As a result, 10 articles and two fact sheets were translated. The team reviewed and updated the Food Safety Training Kit and the GAP posters to match new public service

announcement curricula and created a catalog of available information in English and Spanish. With support from stakeholders, the Extension determined where the greatest needs in programming were and then developed new educational materials and workshops specific to various industry groups. The team created a number of innovative, new food safety (GAPs) outreach, education, and training programs in English and Spanish, including 11 trainings and professional development with a total of 24 presentations. To find all the newly available resources, readers may visit https://extension.psu.edu/ bilingual-produce-safety-education. County. Roberts taught a seminar at the church and then served as a speaker at a banquet for an addictions ministry Santiago was directing at the time. In his work at RTCM, Santiago strives to help individuals who have turned to addictions often to overcome a past trauma. The ministry aims to support clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping mechanisms. Santiago uses The Conquer Series with the clients at RTCM because he says Roberts’ book “Pure Desire” addresses the principles of sexual addiction. “I ask (clients) to tell me what a chapter was about, what (they) learned, how (they) can apply that in (their lives),” said Santiago. “That helps them (because it) starts transforming them from the inside out. I want them to develop accountability. I use (the series) because it’s effective.” Santiago emphasized that the seminar can be useful for couples that are experiencing any kind of marital strife. “(They may ask) ‘Is it how we communicate? How we manage our finances? Childhood trauma that we haven’t addressed?’ It could be anger, verbal or physical abuse, or emotional abuse,” said Santiago. “There are all kinds of things that can be wrong in a marriage, and (the seminar) will address all of that. Our desire is to encourage and strengthen marriages.” Groups are welcome, and table discounts will be available for larger groups. Readers who would like to purchase tickets to the seminar or the banquet or both may call 717-304-3291 or email officemanager@restart ministry.org. victory. The seminar and banquet will be held at Yoder’s Banquet Facility, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland, on Friday, Feb. 7. Seminar doors will open at 7:30 a.m. The seminar will include a continental breakfast and a cold buffet lunch, and it is scheduled to end at 3:30 p.m. The banquet dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Couples or individuals may register to attend the seminar or the banquet or both. A discount will be offered to those who register by Wednesday, Jan. 15. Table sponsorships are available as well. The Conquer Series was developed by Dr. Ted Roberts, a Foursquare minister. The Crafts became involved with the series after James was exposed for his sexual addiction while the couple was serving at a church in Hawaii. James thought he would take his secrets to his grave, and before they were exposed, Teri had no idea he was struggling. In trying to control his life, James said that God pointed out to him that he was not in control. He confessed to his wife and three daughters, and the family began packing to leave Hawaii. Packing, however, was only the beginning. The journey of healing began when James’ daughters came to him and hugged him, and the couple started to see God’s grace in the middle of the pain and anger. They began to focus on allowing God to restore their brokenness, putting their entire lives into rebuilding the family. The Conquer Series helped James understand what was happening in his mind and impacted his movement forward away from addiction. In 2014, Santiago worked with Petra Church in New Holland to bring Roberts to Lancaster

eventually an agreement to move the barn was reached. However, relocating the barn and restoring it so that it was maintained within eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places was no small task. The Abels did not shrink from the unique job of preserving the national treasure. Modern craftsmanship to make the buildings safe, compliant, and convenient for modern use brought together local restorers, builders, masons, and more. The barn and its outbuildings were carefully dismantled and moved from Middletown to their new home at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. A pond was created on the property in correlation to where one was located at the original Star Barn site. A spring house, milk house, double privy, and loafing shed - which had been torn down during the construction of Route 283 - were also re-created. In July 2017, a celebration was held to mark the completion of the task. Readers who wish to know more about the historical society may visit http://nhhistorical.com or search for “New Holland Area Historical Society” on Facebook.

Royer’s Kids Club will host an event on Saturday, Jan. 11, when children ages 5 to 12 will have an opportunity to choose from a selection of flowers to create their own bouquets. Company Expands Facility

R-V Industries in Honey Brook recently acquired a new facility that includes office and industrial manufacturing space. R-V Industries, a design and industrial equipment manufacturer headquartered in Honey Brook, recently acquired a 44,000-square-foot facility that includes office and industrial manufacturing space. The building and 13 acres of land is conveniently situated adjacent to R-V’s headquarters. R-V currently operates 160,000 square feet of in-house manufacturing and assembly space at four separate Pennsylvania locations, including its headquarters and additional manufacturing facilities in Honey Brook, Morgantown, and Exton. These facilities offer turnkey design,

fabrication, machining, finishing, assembly, and testing capabilities allowing R-V to serve clients ranging from local product OEMs to Fortune 500 companies in the industrial and pharmaceutical sector around the world. “This purchase helps facilitate our growth plans and optimize efficiencies by consolidating locations,” said Kirk A. Putt, president and CEO of R-V. “We are committed to U.S.-based manufacturing and believe the local southeastern Pennsylvania community offers a unique work ethic and high level of integrity, both core values of our company.”

Royer’s Collects Holiday Cards For Veterans Audrey Shutter of Royer’s Flowers & Gifts displays some of the 1,000-plus holiday cards and coloring pages the company collected for area veterans in conjunction with the Holidays for Heroes program of the American Red Cross. Royer’s collected the cards and coloring pages from the public throughout November in each of its stores. This year, the Red Cross distributed holiday cards to more than 700 veterans in 30 locations in its greater Pennsylvania region. One of those locations is Frey Village, a continuing care retirement community in Middletown, where the Red Cross and Royer’s hosted a holiday party for 18 veterans on Dec. 16.

wealth and prestige, but according to the Abels, the barn was also designed to honor God. David has called barns the cathedrals of the countryside. Often the largest structures in open spaces, barns could be designed intentionally to attract attention and embody symbolism. The windows of the Star Barn and several outbuildings are shaped like church windows, long and slender, and curving to a point at the top. The fivepoint star is a sign of hope and the prosperity of the nation. Each building has a cupola shaped like a spire pointing to God. When Route 283 was opened in 1971, both locals and visitors to Pennsylvania became acquainted with the unusual barn and buildings decorated with a star motif that could easily be seen from the highway. In addition to the building of the highway, much in Lower Swatara has changed in the last 60 years, and the Star Barn property, which had become a dairy farm, was languishing after 1985. When Tierney first asked David about moving the barn, he told her there was no way it could happen, but Tierney sought God’s will in the matter and

A culmination of the disciplinary perspectives course DSP 380: “EU Simulation,” the trip was organized by the colleges and universities of the Mid-Atlantic European Union Simulation Consortium (MAEUSC). Local students include Joshua Snader of East Earl. Snader, a graduate of Garden Spot High School, is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in politics. Each year, the EU simulation conference addresses a different policy focus. This year, students debated two directives: one on the proposed Just Energy Transition Fund to help European countries that rely heavily on coal and other fossil fuels transition to clean energy by 2050 and another on digital privacy and services.
