Fundraiser Will Benefit Disabled People In Vietnam Garden Spot Students Endeavor To Give Back By Ann Mead Ash
In 2015, Lei Williams and another Garden Spot High School (GSHS) teacher led a group of students to Vietnam. According to GSHS teacher Jeff Martin, who is helping Williams to organize a second trip this coming summer, the students who went were still talking about the excursion long after they had returned. “(The students) had such a positive experience (that they) continued to say how much it impacted them,” recalled Martin. For the upcoming trip, students were charged with finding a way to give back with a project that focused on Vietnam. GSHS seniors who are taking the trip are working with local Vietnam veteran Marlin King, who regularly has
specialized wheelchairs made in Ho Chi Minh City delivered to those in need in Vietnam. To help with this mission, students Sarah Shirk, Mandi Rider, Lilly Leaman, Courtney Zwally, Jasmine Arment, Beatrice Gauthier, Savannah Gibble, Paige Kemper, and Titus Marburger are planning a fundraiser at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 150 Water St., New Holland, on Saturday, Feb. 2. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6 p.m. The meal will include salad, bread, lasagna and dessert. Vietnamese-style appetizers will be served prior to dinner. Following the meal, King will give a presentation on the wheelchair delivery program. Readers who wish to attend the dinner may register by searching for “GSHS Senior Project-Vietnam 2019” at www.eventbrite.com or by calling the school at 717-354-1515. See Fundraiser pg 12
Chapmans To Address Annual Valentine’s Banquet
A group of 28 Garden Spot High School students, staff, and chaperones will travel to Vietnam this summer for an educational tour. A group of seniors going on the trip hopes to raise funds to provide wheelchairs for Vietnam residents in need through a dinner at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church on Feb. 2.
Y Introduces Small Group Training
By Ann Mead Ash
Pastor Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), believes that Steve and Annie Chapman are the perfect guest speakers and singers for the organization’s fourth annual Valentine’s banquet. “The Chapmans were chosen because they have ministered to people in marriages for 40 years,” said Santiago. “Our desire is to encourage people in marriages, and (the Chapmans) have years of experience in their own marriage as well as encouraging others.” Santiago added that the banquet should offer an enriching experience for engaged couples as well. RTCM will hold the 2019 Valentine’s banquet at Yoder’s Restaurant Banquet Facility, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland, on Wednesday, Jan. 30. Doors See Valentine s Banquet pg 6
Annie and Steve Chapman will entertain guests with their music as well as speak on ways to develop a lasting marriage when they give the presentation at Restart Training Center Ministry’s fourth annual Valentine’s banquet at Yoder’s Restaurant in New Holland on Jan. 30.

By Ann Mead Ash
Herbie Beckett, health and wellness director with the Lancaster Family YMCA, is happy to extol the advantages of classes that max out at 10 students.
“(Classes of) five to 10 (students) allow for individualized attention along with a group atmosphere where you can encourage each other,” said Beckett. The three Lancaster Family YMCA locations will all be offering small group See YMCA pg 3

YMCA from pg 1 training classes in some form beginning in early February. The YMCA at New Holland, located at 123 N. Shirk Road, New Holland, will offer four classes, including a nutrition class. The LampeterStrasburg YMCA, 800 Village Road, Lancaster, will hold five classes, and the City Center YMCA, 265 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster, will offer eight classes. Beckett noted that the atmosphere of a small group is more conducive to students’ reaping healthy rewards. “With (large) group classes, it’s easy to get lost in the crowd and not receive that individual instruction,” Beckett said, adding that personalized training can be expensive. “This is a nice middle zone for individual attention, (while still offering) the group atmosphere of camaraderie.” The YMCA at New Holland will offer Body Sculpting 101 on Mondays at 11 a.m. beginning Feb. 11. Beginner Bootcamp will be offered on Thursdays at 9:15 a.m. beginning on Feb. 14. Eat Well, Eat Smart will be offered on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. beginning Feb. 20. Beckett noted that the New Holland location has the advantage of offering a kitchen where class members can learn about macronutrients, which he said include carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. “(Students) will learn how to swap certain ingredients to make recipes healthier,” said Beckett. The fourth New Holland class will be Introduction to Olympic Weight Lifting, and it will be held on Thursdays at 6 p.m. beginning on March 7. “Olympic lifts are getting popular, and people are trying them and performing them incorrectly,” explained Beckett. “They’re not getting the most benefit from the exercise if they’re not using proper form.” Beckett noted that the class will break down the tech-
nical exercises to teach the skills students need to perform the complex movements correctly. Lampeter-Strasburg will offer Fierce, Fit, Fabulous on Saturdays at 9 a.m. beginning Feb. 2 and Tone, Tighten, and Train Tabata on Mondays at 6 p.m. beginning on Feb. 11. Beckett
explained that Tabata involves 20 minutes of activity punctuated by a brief rest. “The idea is to increase your anaerobic capacity,” he said, adding that anaerobic activity is higher intensity than aerobic. Lampeter-Strasburg will also offer Ab Attack on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. beginning Feb. 21 and Ready, Set, Run on Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. beginning on
March 2. Barbell Basics will be offered at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, beginning March 12. Classes offered at City Center will include Aquatic Boot Camp on Mondays at 7 a.m. and Strongman Training on Mondays at noon, both beginning on Feb. 4. Tabata Jump will be offered on Mondays at 9:55 a.m., beginning Feb. 4, and Anaerobic Training for the Everyday Athlete will be

offered at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays beginning on Feb. 5. Running Strong will be offered on Tuesdays at 6 a.m. beginning on Feb. 5, and Unfinished Business, a class that will focus on making holistic life changes in diet and exercise, will take place on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. beginning Feb. 5. Body Pump Basics will be held on Thursdays at 4 p.m. and Triathlon Training will be held
on Thursdays at 6 a.m., both beginning on Feb. 7. Classes are open for registration with special early bird pricing, which gives a 10 percent discount on class fees for both members and nonmembers, available through Thursday, Jan. 31. Change of Pace Central, a women’s nondenominational Bible study sponsored by Friendship Foundation, will hold its winter session. There will be two study group options. “Experiencing God” will run for all 13 weeks, and “Finding I Am” (six weeks) will be followed by “Psalm 23” (seven weeks). Beards For Brothers from pg 1 Lancaster County police departments and first responders joined together in November to support Beards for Brothers. The campaign was organized by Officer Bill Watt of West Hempfield Township. Each year, officers select a first responder from the community currently battling cancer or an organization providing care to those battling cancer. This year’s Beards for Brothers campaign raised money for Officer Wendell Metzler of New Holland Borough Police Department, a 25-year veteran of law enforcement, a volunteer firefighter, and a emergency medical technician. In June, he was diagnosed with stage four melanoma. Metzler has undergone numerous radiation treatments and is currently receiving immunotherapy treatments to battle the disease. Valentine’s Banquet from pg 1 will open at 5:30 p.m., and the meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. In addition to the meal, the event will include live and Chinese auctions with items provided by local businesses. According to Santiago, auction items will include romantic getaways for couples as well as flowers, candy, books, videos, and music geared toward encouraging positive marriage experiences. Santiago said that the Chapmans’ music has spoken to his own marriage to his wife, Pam. “The song ‘The Ships Are Burning’ talks about (the metaphor of) a couple (that) gets married (and sails) to a deserted island,” said Santiago. He explained that some couples dock their ships, but that the song recommends burning the ships because “there’ll be no turning back for you and me.” “When Pam and I got married, this song spoke volumes to me,” said Santiago. “I wanted to make that type of commitment to her (because) no matter how many times we bump heads, we don’t quit on (making the) journey together.” RTCM strives to help individuals who have been traumatized through abuse and who have turned to abusing chemicals or have developed other kinds of addictions. The ministry aims to support clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping mechanisms. RTCM has graduated 10 clients in the last year, and four more are due to graduate the day
before the banquet. The ministry was founded in 2015 and accepted its first clients in 2016. The ministry has four live-in staff members at its Lancaster facility, which Santiago believes is necessary for accountability and success. “We will end 2018 in the black, which is good financially. We are thankful for that,” said Santiago. Santiago has many years of experience working with individuals fighting addictions. “I tell them, ‘I will meet you where you are,’” Santiago said, adding that moving from bondage to obedience to freedom means exposing their true selves. “The bottom line is that as long as you’re not dealing with the trauma (in your past), the pain ... drives you to (bad decisions),” said Santiago. “That’s the ritual … the escape.” According to Santiago, many clients wear a false self and keep their real self hidden. RTCM teaches clients that they need to bring the real self out and acknowledge mistakes to eventually replace false beliefs with God’s truth, which leads to healthy behavior. Table sponsorships for the event are available. Tickets, which are required for individuals to attend the banquet, must be purchased by Tuesday, Jan. 15. A freewill offering will be received at the event. Readers who would like to purchase tickets may call 717304-3291 or email officemanager@ restartministry.org. The Lancaster Airport Authority dedicated and unveiled the sculpture “We Care to Dream” at a ceremony on Nov. 14 at the Lancaster Airport. Created by Patrick Mack of Indianapolis and located in front of the Lancaster Airport Terminal, the permanently mounted polished stainless steel sculpture represents humanity’s love of flight. During a private ceremony, the sculpture was dedicated in memory of Marvin E. Miller Jr., past Pennsylvania legislator, Lancaster businessman, and member of the Authority’s board of directors. PENNYSAVER Conrad Weiser at the Eastern York Holiday Tournament. The Spartans topped the Scouts 59-38, coming back from an early 16-10 deficit to do so. Megan Fisher poured in 20 points for Garden Spot. The double-digit scoring also came courtesy of Karli Stoltzfus, who finished with 12 and Paige Kemper, who made four baskets and both of her free throws. Also contributing was Olivia Usner with seven points. The Spartans had suffered a 61-47 loss to the host school the previous night. The Golden Knights outscored the Spartans 15-7 in the second half, overcoming a slim deficit at the start of that stanza. They carried a 43-35 edge into the fourth quarter, finishing the game on an 18-12 run. The Knights’ Addison Malone led all scorers with 19 points. Kemper led Garden Spot with 11 while Stoltfus added 10 more. Fisher finished with seven points and Usner added six. BOYS’ BASKETBALL The Spartans went to work immediately after Christmas, playing two non-league games on the road. On Wednesday, December 26, they edged Warwick 47-46 but suffered a 70-48 loss the following night at Bishop
McDevitt. Colby Weaver and Keontae Nunn, who led the Spartans in scoring against Warwick, were held to two points each in the loss to the Crusaders. The Warwick game was close from start to finish. The Warriors took a 2725 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Spartans’ 9-6 run in the third quarter was crucial in helping to hold off the home team. The Warriors’ Ryan Shirk tied Weaver for the game’s top-scoring total of 17 points. Weaver nailed a trio of three-point field goals. Nunn scored 10 of his 12 points from the field and converted a pair of foul shots as well. Also adding to the point total was Jon Morales and Matthew Sharp, who scored seven each. Jesse Martin and Josiah Snader each put up one bucket. The Crusaders charged ahead with an 18-4 opening period and took a 39-18 lead by halftime on the Spartans the following night. Morales led Garden Spot with 12 points, Andrew Zentner’s nine-point game included a three-point bucket. Austin Skowood, who had two threepointers, Sharp and John Dykie each finished with six points. Another returning senior on this year’s squad is Alex O’Neill who recorded a 96 in the match. The Spartans were coming off another league match from two days prior, having suffered a 497-483 loss to Manheim Central. The Barons were led by the perfect scores of Ellie McCabe and Braden Groff. Hartman paced Spot with 99 points while Weaver racked up 98. Juan Romero, Braden Reel and Evan Emch rounded out the top five with respective scores of 97, 95 and 94. Garden Spot fell to 0-4 on the year following these defeats. BOWLING With less than a week left until the holiday break, the Spartans played the Cocalico Eagles in a Section Three clash at Dutch Lanes. Garden Spot’s bowlers were hoping to close the gap between their squad and the first-place Eagles, who came
into the game holding a 3-0 record. The Eagles prevailed 5-2, improving to 4-0 on December 20. Garden Spot fell to 3-1 in the L-L League (4-1 overall). Trevor Courtney rolled a 658 on the day, finishing with scores of 211, 232 and 215. Spartan teammate Amanda Lynch tallied 631 on the afternoon, improving steadily and finishing with a 234 in her third game. The Eagles were led by Nate Buckwalter’s 608. It was Garden Spot’s second visit to Dutch Lanes in three days. On December 18, the Spartans had topped Elizabethtown 5-2 thanks to a tremendous 771 score by Courtney. The sophomore rolled a 258 in his first game. After dipping to 234 in the second game, he crushed the pins to the count of an impressive 279. Lynch rolled a 596 to solidify the victory. From there they will go to Ha Long Bay, spending a night on a boat. They will also visit Sa Pa, the rice paddies near the Chinese border and the area where the Hmong live. In Da Nang, the students will take part in a service project working with young adults who were exposed to Agent Orange. “We will visit the Hand of God Bridge ... and a UNICEF historical site, (Hoi An),” said Williams, who added that the students will shop at a local market and learn to cook a meal. “(The Vietnamese) do decorative art with food, (so students) will learn about making flowers with tomatoes and cucumbers,” said Williams. The students will also take an eco-farming and fishing tour. In Ho Chi Minh City, the group will visit an orphanage and the Reunification Palace and War Remnants Museum. The students will make a stop at Cu Chi tunnels, which were used by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War. The trip will also include a homestay in the
Mekong Delta, where many of the residents work on the river and live on boats. Shirk said she became interested in visiting Vietnam after learning her grandfather served there during the war. “I want to experience the different culture,” she said. Rider noted that she has always wanted to travel and that she is specifically interested in visiting the Cu Chi tunnels she learned about in her freshman year at GSHS. Educating the travelers prior to the trip is an important goal, according to Martin. “(During the spring) semester, we will have regular club hours (designated) to study culture,” he said, adding that guest speakers will address the students. He noted that teamwork principles will also be discussed to foster cooperation among the nearly 30 tour takers. Meetings about the upcoming trip were first held in May of 2018. In July 2018, the students held a chicken barbecue to raise funds. During the fall semester, cookie dough was donated to the group, and the students baked and sold 7,000 cookies to help to offset costs.

Program Will Feature Engle Clock The Engle clock indicates the day of the week, current month, phase of the moon, and current tides. It has three towers, two organ movements, and 48 moving figures that comprise a unique cast of biblical characters, a group of soldiers from the American Revolution, and others. The clock toured across the eastern U.S. for 70 years before disappearing. The Engle clock was later discovered in a barn. It is now fully restored and resides at the museum. The presentation will include a full history of the clock, its creator, and the restoration process and a full demonstration of the Engle clock with a thorough discussion of all its functions. The National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, will host a TIMEtalks presentation from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 19. The topic will be the Engle monumental clock. In the late 19th century, a short-lived type of clock — the monumental clock — enchanted the American public. Large, complicated, and painstakingly handcrafted, the clocks were made to awe and entertain. Between 1875 and 1900, more than two dozen of these clocks toured the United States and Europe. The first known monumental clock made in the U.S. was the Engle monumental clock, finished in 1878. Taking 20 years to complete and marketed as “the eighth wonder of the world,” it is 11 feet high, 8 feet wide, and 3 feet deep.
