“We are trying to find the best way to help people to stretch their dollars,” said Amy Marburger, who oversees the CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center at 127 W. Franklin St., New Holland. “Our social workers push for families to sign up if they realize food is one of their biggest expenses.” In addition to the food pantry, CrossNet offers Buddy Bags for children attending New Holland, Brecknock, and Blue Ball elementary schools and CrossNet Meal Packs for families.

Now, a student choice pantry has opened at Garden Spot High School to serve students in seventh through 12th grades. “Chrissy Ansari, the high school social worker, said, ‘We need Buddy Bags at this level,’” recalled Marburger of the impetus for the program, which began in October of 2023. “The social workers are diligent,” Marburger noted, adding that Ansari made direct contact with students she felt would directly benefit and encouraged students to continue to participate. Brian Frankhouser displays a few of the postcards he will use in his presentation “The Golden Age of Postcards.”

Brian Frankhouser, board member with the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS), has been collecting old postcards for about three decades. Frankhouser shared his knowledge of the subject, along with his expertise in local history - specifically Blue Ball - during an NHAHS presentation in October. Frankhouser’s presentation was so positively received that he suggested to Rodney Hartman, a member of the Terre Hill Area Historical Society, that he give a similar presentation on

Terre Hill. “The Golden Age of Postcards,” a multimedia experience, will be presented at the Terre Hill Community Center, 131 W. Main St., Terre Hill, on Thursday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. The presentation will be free, and the public is invited to attend. F ra n k h o u s e r ’s c o l l e c t i o n includes more than 60 views of Terre Hill, which was first settled in 1840. “There are street scenes, the churches, and the hotel,” said Frankhouser, who easily veers from the subject of postcards to the history of the places in the photos. “That’s the new hotel built in 1906,” Frankhouser said, See Historical society pg 8

Student participants are assigned numbers so that only the guidance counselors and social workers know their true identities. Student volunteers fill the bags with the requested items. Participants are given hall passes to make it easier to pick up the bags from their guidance counselors when they are filled. Since its inception, the student choice pantry has served five to 17 students weekly, and nearly 90 bags had been handed out before Christmas. Marburger noted that CrossNet staff and school social workers meet monthly to discuss student concerns and work to improve the program. Participants in the Buddy Bags program at the three ELANCO School District elementary schools now total 175 per week. The components of the Buddy Bags include breakfast foods, snacks, fruits, and juice. Bags are distributed on Friday afternoons during the school year. Area families may also receive a weekly CrossNet Meal Pack. “Families can receive Buddy Bags and items from the free student pantry and still receive a CrossNet Meal Pack,” said Marburger. “We ask for people to sign up for meal packs, but we offer them to any

Grassland FFA from pg 1 reunions of those who took part in each decade the chapter has existed. Lauffer said that the exhibit will feature the slogan “Grassland FFA - Leadership for a Lifetime,” and it will include a photo of Herr with Grassland FFA national officer Glenn Webber. Portraits of all 26 state officers, along with photos of the students who earned Keystone Degrees, will be included. An extra 60 feet of display space has been included with the addition of portable racks. Lauffer noted that current FFA members are taking an active part in research and helping to complete the display. GSHS staff members Meagan Beam and Jamie Clement have also helped, along with Class of 2020 graduate Allison Zimmerman, who has worked on the design and fabrication of the display. Lauffer has created a questionnaire to help gather data and photos for the celebration. The questionnaire asks for information

about when former FFA members were part of Grassland, what offices they held, memorable events and experiences, who their teachers were, and how they use what they learned in the program. The survey may be accessed at https://bit.ly/ GrasslandFFAAlumniQuestionnaire. Lauffer noted that the agricultural program under Herr was “amazingly innovative.” “Things he did were nationally recognized,” said Lauffer, pointing to the adult

farmer program and elementary agricultural program. He also praised Phil Ogline, who in 1972 began the segment of the program on environmental agriculture. “The program was unique in stressing conservation education,” said Lauffer. “It was way ahead of its time.” Readers who would like to know more about Grassland FFA may visit https://sites.google.com/elanco .org/grasslandffa/home or search for “Grassland FFA” on Facebook.

noting that the Fairville Hotel was the first hotel in that location. The name “Fairville” was derived from Terre Hill’s initial moniker. Because another Fairville already existed, the post office in the town was called Terre Hill, with the community officially incorporated in 1907. “There’s a lot to look at in Terre Hill,” noted Frankhouser, who added that the proliferation of postcards is related to the number of stores located in the borough at the beginning of the 20th century. “There were three general stores,” said Frankhouser, who added that George Gehman’s store, Samuel Watts’store, and the Marks and Moyer store all sold postcards. Many of the photos on postcards from smaller Lancaster County towns were taken by Ed Herbener, a Newark, Del., resident and photographer who came to Lancaster in 1914. “(Herbener) took photos of the small towns and then took the pictures to the stores and offered to sell them postcards of a photo for 2 1/2 cents each,” explained Frankhouser, who said that the stores would then sell the cards for 5 cents each, as compared to generic cards that were 1 cent each. “There was competition between the stores, and each store commissioned postcards to be made to be sold in the store,” he said. In addition, local residents with cameras could opt to have a photo printed as a postcard rather than a regular print, multiplying the possibilities of local scenes ending up on the cards. Frankhouser explained that the Golden Age of Postcards lasted from 1904 to about 1917. “(During that time) if I wanted to invite you for supper, I would send a postcard on Tuesday, and you would get it on Wednesday,” explained Frankhouser, who pointed out that at that time the mail was delivered twice a day. “You’d respond (with a card) on Wednesday or Thursday, and I would have it by Friday. It happened very quickly.” “(The Golden Age) ended because of three major things,” said Frankhouser, who then listed the invention and proliferation of the telephone; the melting down of the presses in Germany - where the best quality cards were printed - for World War I; and the increase in the price of a stamp from 1 cent to 2 cents in 1917, as reasons. More information about the organization may be found by searching for “Terre Hill Area Historical Society” on Facebook.
