Afewyears ago, neighbors Darlene Rissler and Melissa Mabry were chatting during a yard sale. Mabry shared that the stewardship committee at VAL-CO Industries, New Holland, where she is an accountant, was looking for a way to give back to the community. She mentioned forming a partnership between VAL-CO and Blue Ball Church of the Brethren (COB), where Darlene is a member and her husband, Quentin, is lead pastor.
“(VAL-CO Industries) wanted to do a little free pantry. (VAL-CO) wanted to construct it but to place it in a more visible spot,” noted Darlene, who pointed out that the church location at 1005 E. Main St., Blue Ball, met the requirements.
“We were looking for someone to stock it if we built it,” explained Mabry.
The advent of COVID-19 restrictions delayed progress of the project,
but in October 2022, VAL-CO employees began constructing the pantry based on plans drawn up by VAL-CO designers. Darlene had hoped to have the pantry in place at the church by Christmas, and shortly before the holiday, the structure was delivered. “PowerPro (Equipment of New Holland) brought a forklift to unload it, and that’s appreciated,” said Quentin.
The small, red structure now sits in the church parking lot. The storm door on the front bears the words “Blue Ball Community Food PantryTake what you need, leave what you can.” Inside the pantry are five deep shelves stocked with a variety of food items, as well as cleaning products. “There are no strings attached,” said Darlene. “If you need something, just stop and get it.”
“We are not looking to replace food banks,” said Quentin. “We are looking to supplement 24/7 … to bridge the gap when food banks are not open.”

Brent Henderson To Speak At Sportsman Banquet
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Whether recounting stories of catching black mambas by hand or surviving a shipwreck off the Alaskan coast, outdoorsman, author, and Christian musician Brent Henderson has one goal for his audiences. “They are listening to more than great outdoor stories,” said Henderson. “(Because) there’s a relationship (they) can have with the One who made it all.” See RTCM pg 2

Shortly after Thanksgiving 2022, Lou Ann Miller, who coordinates the displays for the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) Museum, began clearing out an exhibit to make room for a collection of metal toys produced by J. Chein & Company beginning in 1903. The display overflows two cases into two smaller additional displays. Miller wanted the toys to be on exhibit for children and parents who visited during the holidays, but the colorful pieces of children’s playthings collected by Liz Bicking and her late husband, Lawrence, will be on display into the spring and maybe the summer.

Henderson will share his stories with attendees of the Restart Training Center Ministry’s (RTCM) eighth annual sportsman dinner on Tuesday, March 21, and Wednesday, March 22, at Shady Maple Banquet Hall, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and the meal will be served at 5:30 p.m. RTCM is an organization that strives to help men who have developed addictions as a means of coping with difficulties.
Originally from Bethlehem, Pa., Henderson worked in a steel mill following high school leaving town to attend college in 1981, but instead venturing into Christian contemporary music. “I met a guy named Steven Curtis Chapman, and he and I traveled for a while,” recalled Henderson, who later played with artists Sandi Patty and Crystal Lewis and the group Avalon. In 2002, he became the worship leader and ministry pastor with an organization in Meadville. “God moved me into speaking full time to men,” said Henderson, who credited God with mixing his passion for men’s ministry with his love for the outdoors in his talks. “It was the per-
fect fit.” In that capacity, he likes to bring audience members to the edges of their seats. “I have hunted everywhere from Africa to Alaska,” noted Henderson. “I’ve had a lot of crazy experiences.” Among those are a brown bear attack and being stranded in the mountains when the flight back was delayed by bad weather. “(The stories) always lead back to God’s faithfulness and care,” shared Henderson. Henderson is the author of “Into the Wilds” and “The Roar Within.”
Jaime Santiago, founder and executive director of RTCM, said that Henderson was recommended by Don Higgins, who spoke at a previous sports banquet. In addition to hearing Henderson’s talk, attendees may bid on items in a live auction or purchse tickets for giveaways. Live auction items will include a cabin getaway, a 6by-6-foot octagon ground blind, a Puerto Rican meal for up to 10 people, a deep-sea fishing trip, and tickets to a men’s retreat being presented by Henderson. Ticket auction items include an in-line muzzleloader, a Ravin R26X crossbow, and a Weber grill. Grand prizes will be a Mathews bow and a Wicked Ridge Raider
400 De-Cock.
Currently, RTCM is mounting a capital campaign with the goal of purchasing the former Strasburg Elementary School. The facility would offer 12 beds and provide rooms students could rent while working locally. RTCM would continue to provide meals, transportation, and a supportive environment. The goal is to raise $1.3 million to purchase the building and a total of $1.6 million to include funding for reservations.
Tickets, which are necessary to attend the banquet, will be discounted through Tuesday, Feb. 28. To purchase tickets, please call 717-3043291 or email officemanager @restartministry.org.

Christmas Tree Recycling
County residents may dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Trees may be dropped off between dawn and dusk through Tuesday, Jan. 31.
The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. There is a limit of three trees per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for
their respective Christmas tree recycling locations.
There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the Lancaster County Park System. A portion of the funds are used to purchase emerald ash borer protection for about 26 ash trees in Lancaster County Central Park and Buchmiller County Park.
According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants
such as rhododendrons and azaleas, and many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis after Jan. 4, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home.
For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, call the park office at 717-299-8215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation, visit www.lancastercounty parks.org.

Before setting up the exhibit, Miller researched the toy manufacturer, which was started in Manhattan by Julius Chein, an immigrant from Russia of Jewish descent. The company made small, metal stamped toys, which at first were hand painted. “Later it was lithographs,” said Miller, an artist herself, who called the artwork and lithographs “beautiful.”
The company grew quickly, moving to Harrison, N.J., in 1907 and boasting 300 employees by 1913. J. Chein’s marketing and distribution brought the company into notable associations that propelled it forward, including an exclusive partnership with F. W. Woolworth and a contract to put small metal toys, such as whistles, in boxes of Cracker Jacks.
The Chein company was known for toys such as sand buckets and funnels, but by 1915, Julius had acquired a patent for a bank that flashed the amount of a deposited coin when it was slipped through the slot. The company also produced
extra-large toys in its Hercules line, which Miller said were heavy gauge and up to 18 inches long.
When Julius died in 1926, his wife, Elizabeth, became president, but by 1931, the company was struggling. Enter Samuel Hoffman, Elizabeth’s brother and founder of a competing toy manufacturer. Miller expressed her admiration for the toys produced during Hoffman’s stint running the company, noting that the plant made metal Easter rabbits and chicks, spinning tops, and spring-wound toys during that time period.
In 1942, the company aided the World War II effort by making war materials such as munitions and casings for incendiary devices. The first items the organization produced in 1946 utilized a
bazooka rocket nose cone repurposed into a bank.
By the 1960s, the company was producing metal toys emblazoned with likenesses of Charles Schulz’s Peanuts characters. “(The display) traces the history of toys,” noted Miller, who pointed out that America’s changing taste in playthings for children is reflected inthe exhibit. Facing competition from plastic toys and criticism from the Consumer Product Safety Commission for sharp edges on some toys, J. Chein eventually gave up toy making and became Chein Industries, producing housewares into the 1990s.
The museum, which is located at 207 E. Main St., New Holland, is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Tuesday and Saturday or by appointment by calling 717- 538-3079.

Members of the community are invited to contribute to the pantry. “The idea is for the community to leave their extra food items,” said Darlene. Nonperishable food items and household necessities are welcome, as is fresh produce during gardening season. Darlene cautioned that items are weatherdependent, referencing issues with liquids during the recent cold snap. The church has partnered with Blessings of Hope to help stock the pantry, as well.

“It’s a good partnership,” said Quentin of the project the church and VAL-CO have worked together to complete. He added that he hopes to provide information at the pantry about other local sources of food for those in need.

Pavelik Leads the Spartans in Loss to Barons
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
In a battle between two Lancaster-Lebanon League rivals, the Manheim Central Barons topped Garden Spot 50-20 on Tuesday night, January 3. The setback dropped Garden Spot’s record to 1-10 on the year (0-3 league) while the Barons improved to 7-3 (3-0 league).
Playing the game at Doe Run Elementary in Manheim, Central was led by Maddie Knier’s 19-point performance. The Barons charged ahead to a 17-4 lead following the first period.
Morgan Pavelik led Garden Spot with seven points. Nikki Zeiset scored four more while Gwen Varley, with the only three-point basket for the Spartans, finished with three points.
Garden Spot was coming off a close finish in the Warwick Holiday Tournament’s consolation game on December 30. Trailing by only five points heading into the fourth quarter, the Spartans finished on the short end of a 45-36 final to the tournament hosts.
Pavelik paced Spot with 11 points in the game, including a three-pointer.
Zeiset poured in 10 points while Varley connected on a pair of three-pointers for her six points of the game.
A.J. McClain also made a trey and was 2-for-2 at the foul line for her five points.
Syanna Duval contributed four points.
Sam Shaak scored 12 for Warwick.
WRESTLING
The Spartans overcame forfeits in three weight classes, coming back to beat the Cedars 46-23 in L-L League wrestling on December 22 at Lebanon.
The comeback began with Tomo Allen’s 12-4 major decision at the 127-pound weight class followed by two Lebanon forfeits to give Garden Spot a 16-12 advantage.
Justin Eberly’s pin made it 22-12 at 152. Tyler Hurst also posted a pin in the 215-pound bout, which came after two more Lebanon forfeits. Leading 40-17, Mason Musser registered a pin in the heavyweight bout for Spot.
The Spartans played host to a tough Cocalico squad in a Section Two wrestling match on Wednesday, January 4.
The Eagles topped Spot 4322, taking advantage of four Spartan forfeited weight classes.
The Spartans (2-2) found
themselves down 18-0 after Cocalico pins in the 152- 160and 172-pound weight classes. Blake Weaver’s 9-1 major decision at 189 put the Spartans on the board and they tacked on six uncontested points, granting a victory by forfeit at 215 to Tyler Hurst.
Musser’s second-period pin cut the deficit to 18-16 whereas the Eagles’ 107-pound forfeit actually gave Garden Spot a 22-18 lead.
The rest of the match was all Cocalico, highlighted by Tim Porter’s 10-2 major at 133.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Garden Spot was going for its first L-L League victory of the season on Tuesday night January 3, at New Holland.
Manheim Central’s 24-13 run in the third quarter and an equally dominant 26-12 fourth helped the Barons claim a 70-49 victory on the Spartan’s home court. Trey Grube’s efficiency from threepoint range resulted in five treys for Central as Grube finished with a game-high 26 points.
Garden Spot fell to 0-3 in league play (3-7 overall). Central improved to 7-2 (2-0 league).
Jace Conrad led the Spartans with 13 points and senior Gabe Smeltz scored 11.
Zachary Uplinger, Jeff Jean and Michael Heisley each had a three-pointer and each finished with five points on the night.
Garden Spot’s final game of 2022 was a non-league home game with Susquehannock on December 28.
The Warriors took a slim 28-26 lead into the second half and managed to eke out a 65-59 victory over the Spartans.
Conrad drilled four threepointers to lead the Spartans with 17 points. Heisley poured in 16 more, including a perfect 5-for-5 night at the foul line. Smeltz contributed nine points.
AIR RIFLE
The Spartans improved to 3-1 with a close 494-492 defeat of Elizabethtown on Thursday, December 22.
Leksi Bender of Garden Spot and Luke Turner of E-town both hit the 100-point mark to lead their respective teams. Jack Werner and Matthew Sauder each shot 99’s on the day, being the difference in the match. The Bears’ next four shooters all finished with 98’s.
Ryan Lambert and Trevor Jones also recorded 98’s for Garden Spot.
The Spartans’ lone loss of the season was a mid-December 593-592 setback at Ephrata. Bender and Jones both shot 100’s and Magdalene Martin 99 while both Werner and Cora Parsons finished with 98’s. Evan Brace shot a 97 in the December 20 battle.
BOWLING
Thanks to Gavin Courtney making the most of his opportunities, Garden Spot was able to strike a victory over Northern Lebanon on Tuesday, January 3, in L-L League bowling. With their 7-0 triumph, the Spartans improved to 17-11 on the year.
Courtney bowled 254 in the first game and improved to an even stronger 278 in game 2. On this afternoon at Dutch Lanes, he compiled 748 as he bowled 216 in his third game.

Strausser Joins Science Program
Albright College Founder’s Scholar Leah Strausser of Narvon has been accepted into Tower Health’s 11-month Medical Laboratory Science Program at the Reading Hospital School of Medical Laboratory Science. A graduate of Garden Spot High School studying molecular psychobiology at Albright College, Reading, Strausser will begin training after completing her Bachelor of Science this spring.
Having originally considered a career as a psychiatrist, Strausser discovered through her Albright courses that she enjoyed the laboratory environment - making
the Medical Laboratory Science Program a perfect fit. Working as a research student, Strausser is taking part in ongoing investigation by Albright undergraduates into the role of ectromelia growth factor in the ectromelia (mpox) virus. At the same time, she is delving into a concept called mate value with her senior thesis adviser.
Once immersed in the Medical Laboratory Science Program, Strausser hopes to learn how to perform a wide variety of biological tests to benefit patients while working in a clinical setting.
