HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS IN THIS ISSUE!

Hometown Heroes - GSFR Chief Darryl Keiser BY ANN MEAD ASH

eporters are normally the ones who ask the questions in an interview, but Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) chief Darryl Keiser is happy to turn the tables, and he is not afraid of honest answers. “Do you know what the most powerful drug in the world is?” he asked during a sit-down in his office at Station 39, 339 E. Main St., New Holland. “Adrenaline,” I answered. “That’s exactly right,” said Keiser without hesitation. “We are all adrenaline junkies. That’s what gets (all the volunteers) in. We’re big boys with big toys.” Of course, it takes more than adrenaline to make someone serve the local community as a volunteer firefighter for more than 25 years. Keiser came to the borough in 1987 as a staff member at the New Holland Church of the Nazarene. At first, he and his family lived in Terre Hill. When they moved to New Holland in the early 1990s,

R

Keiser’s neighbor Shawn Mohler asked him about volunteering with the company. Having been a member of a volunteer fire service in Cedarville, N.J., as a teenager, Keiser accepted. He was appointed as an officer in 2010, and he was elected chief in 2017. Keiser devotes several hours a week to his position as chief, while working as a sales representative for New Holland Concrete.

Fortunately, during the shutdown, call volume dropped for both fires and accidents. “There were a lot fewer (accidents) because there was nobody on the road,” “There are fire calls, training at least once a week, and meetings two or three other nights,” said Keiser, who attends quarterly Lancaster County meetings for area fire chiefs in addition to GSFR meetings. “We have a bimonthly zone 3 (meeting),”

he said, explaining that zone 3 is a coalition of fire departments located in the eastern part of the county. “We all work together,” said Keiser. COVID-19 restrictions interrupted the normal flow of meetings and training sessions. “COVID-19 limited us for training,” said Keiser. “We went to station trainings (to keep up to date).” Fortunately, during the shutdown, call volume dropped for both fires and accidents. “There were a lot fewer (accidents) because there was nobody on the road,” recalled Keiser. “I was scared we would have more fires with people home cooking, but they were more attentive to what was going on in the house.” Keiser explained that the GSFR’s first-due area covers about 30 square miles and that overall, the number of calls dropped from just under 500 a year to about 300 for 2020. However, a lack of training and activity is not necessarily a good thing. “When you’re not doing what you’re trained to do, you lose your edge,” noted Keiser, who said that normal training schedules resumed in the fall.

Leaving A Legacy: Mentor Touches The Future At Bench Mark BY ANN MEAD ASH

Lancaster resident Nate Luvice is only 22 years old, but he is already concerned about the legacy he will leave. “I want to be sure that I leave my mark in this community,” said Luvice. “When people talk about me, they will say that (I) made a change.” Luvice is a full-time mentor and student services coordinator with Bench Mark, a program located on East Liberty Street in Lancaster city See Bench Mark pg 4

Virtual Class - In-Person Project BY ANN MEAD ASH

When area resident Brandon Bixler graduated from Garden Spot High School in 2019, he knew he would be taking a gap year to serve as a state officer for Pennsylvania FFA. What he did not know is that his first semester at Penn State University in the fall of 2020 would be completed from his home in New Holland due to COVID-19 restrictions. As part of his major in agricultur-

al and extension education with a minor in international agriculture, one of Bixler’s virtual classes focused on food security. Looking to give students a global perspective, the professor connected the class to a technical school in Ukraine. Students were also assigned to complete a project that would make an impact in the area of food security. “The direction from the instructor was that it was the student’s responsibility to come up with a way to make an impact,” said Bixler.

COVID-19 complicated the experience this year for Potales, but she forged ahead, originally placing six students in the area. Several students decided to hold off, and others were grounded because they could not obtain visas while they were quarantined. Vargas was awarded his visa only about five days before his flight left Bolivia. Both students said they feel they are experiencing more freedom here. Vaccari noted that in the area of Italy where she lives, some regions were still under lockdowns. Vargas said that Santa Cruz is a small city with a dense population. He recalled six months of lockdown with designated hours to purchase groceries. “It’s better here (because people are spread out),” he said. While COVID-19 restrictions meant the students have missed out on some cultural experiences, both found positive activities to take part in. Vaccari played a full season of soccer, and Vargas ran cross-country. The students also attended two GSHS football games. Vaccari’s host family members took her to their beach house and planned a visit to their cabin. “They have been creating experiences for her,” shared Potales, who took Vargas to see her daughter, singer Juliana Wardle, perform in Maryland. Vargas noted that the GSHS building is a lot larger than the school he attends in Bolivia. “It’s a completely different culture (but) I love it,” said Vargas, noting that he has enjoyed new experiences, such as the change of seasons. “I don’t live very far from the Equator, so we don’t have such different seasons,” he explained. Vargas said he is amazed by the variety of food from many different countries that is available here, and he has tried mixing a few items that are not traditionally eaten together, to the amazement of Potales. Vaccari has experienced Pennsylvania Dutch food, noting that pork and sauerkraut is a favorite. Both students said they were glad they came to New Holland for their senior year. “I have been able to learn a lot of new things,” said Vargas. Vaccari agreed, saying, “I think people here want to know you. They want to know your culture, and they want to be friends with you.”

LOCAL BUSINESS DIRECTORY

The .918 Club will hold its regular monthly meeting in the Ken Kulakowsky Center for Letterpress and Book Arts, 117 Parkside Ave., Lancaster, on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. There is plenty of free parking. The .918 Club seeks to keep the craft of letterpress printing alive in Lancaster County through presenting demonstrations at the Heritage Press Museum to illustrate the history of printing and through providing a working letterpress job shop. During meetings, volunteers of the Heritage Press Museum share ideas and suggestions concerning the educational demonstrations and sign up to operate the print shop. Meetings also provide a place for people to learn

about letterpress printing or develop the skills to become volunteers in the print shop. The first 15 to 20 minutes of the Jan. 27 gathering will be devoted to a business meeting. A presentation or video on some aspect of printing history will be presented, time permitting. The meeting will conclude with a show and tell, and attendees are invited to bring something they printed or discovered that was printed by letterpress. Additionally, the club is seeking support through payment of dues and donations to the club. Because outside groups are currently not permitted to use the campus facilities at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, the .918 Club is receiving all its income from

membership dues, donations, and museum sales. Dues-paying members of the .918 Club will receive a membership card, a custom printed membership certificate, and regular email updates of all club meetings and events. In addition, members will be able to attend monthly meetings with full voting privileges, participate in instructional and certification workshops, schedule studio time in the center for personal use, and sell personally produced items in the Best Impression Letterpress Museum Gift Shop. Members will also receive up to a 50% discount on workshops. For more information or to become a member, readers may visit www.918club.org.

Author Kim Kluxen Meredith had only met illustrator Lisa Madenspacher once before they began working together on Meredith’s latest book, “Henri’s Home, which was published in October. “Henri’s Home was inspired by summer vacations on the Jersey shore with Meredith’s grandchildren who prefer her made-up stories to books. “Henri the hermit crab and his family came into my head, said Meredith, who told her friend Kathy Young the story while confessing, “But I cannot draw. Young suggested Madenspacher as illustrator. The author and artist met once before the pandemic arrived, and Madenspacher showed Meredith samples of her work. “ We hit it off right away. I knew she would be the right person, recalled Meredith, who requested watercolors for a story that took place at the beach. For the next several months the pair communicated online as Meredith tweaked the story. “I would send her the text from a page, and she would interpret it so beautifully, said Meredith. “It was a godsend that we were partnered together. “Henri’s Home is the story of a hermit crab who lives with his family under a fishing pier. The tale sets the stage for Henri’s “growing experience as he and his sister and parents scavenge along the shoreline, duck predator seagulls, and play together. When Henri outgrows his shell, a new one is found, but as he adjusts to his larger home, a mishap occurs that separates Henri from his pier. His adventure gives him and the reader an opportunity to meet many ocean creatures and learn how they live as Henri endeavors to find his family again. The book, which features more than 40 of Madenspacher’s drawings, was formatted by Ashley Reinhard and printed by Yurchak Printing in Landisville. Originally from upstate New York, Meredith worked as a Spanish teacher and a paralegal before moving to Lancaster with her first husband David Kluxen. When their children were preteens, David died as a result of a single-car accident in the early 1990s. Meredith journaled to work her way through her grief. “At night, I would write and cry and put it away, she recalled. When she told a

friend about the journal, the friend suggested Meredith’s writings might help someone else through grief. “Listen for the Whispers: Coping With Grief and Learning to Live Again was first published in 2010. The book contains a workbook to help those who might be going through a similar experience. Meredith has conducted workshops and given talks based on the book. Meredith describes her second book, “Ocean Whispers, published in 2018, as a gift book. It was based on a summer 2017 beach trip where each morning for 42 mornings, she picked up a shell and wrote a corresponding message to go with it in her blog, calling the series “The Daily Shell. Meredith brought the writing together with her seashell photos to create a book that was sold in shops in Ocean City and Cape May, N.J., as well as Rehoboth, Del. More information about “Henri’s Home may be found at https://kimkluxen meredith.com/henris-home.

that focuses on giving opportunities to under-served youths through weightlifting. Luvice’s history with the program began seven years ago when he heard Bench Mark founder Will Kiefer speak at Phoenix Academy. Luvice noted that he specifically remembered Kiefer saying he wanted “to give back.” “That sounded strange to me,” said Luvice. “(In my experience), it (was) not usual for someone to want to help you with nothing in return.” Luvice and Kiefer began meeting for coffee. Luvice recalled that he had no identification. “(Kiefer) helped me get my driving permit and all my identification,” Luvice stated. While Luvice appreciated the help, he was not ready to fully commit to a new perspective. “I was scared of change,” Luvice admitted.

FENCING SPECIALISTS

“When you’re uncomfortable, you’re growing.” Luvice noted that during that time period, he was in and out of jail, but Kiefer never gave up on him. In 2016, Luvice made a decision. “I was shot in the stomach, and I lost four liters of blood,” said Luvice, who still carries a bullet in his lower spine. “I knew it was time to change.” Early one morning while still in the hospital, Luvice reached out to Kiefer. “I said, ‘I really need your help. Now it’s time,’” recalled Luvice. Kiefer, who was on a mission trip to Honduras, wrote back that he would visit Luvice upon his return. “I thought he wouldn’t come. I thought I blew it,” said Luvice, “but sure enough he came to my house when I was recovering.” Since then, Luvice has turned to Kiefer without reservation. “He has been a father figure and mentor,” said Luvice, who noted the hardest part of adjusting was letting go of friends who were not supportive of the changes he was making for himself and for his two children.

Will Kiefer (left), founder of Bench Mark, and Nate Luvice (right), mentor at Bench Mark, are offering opportunities to at-risk youths in Lancaster.

A little over a year ago, Kiefer offered Luvice a chance to become a mentor through a curriculum that developed into the Student Leadership Program, which helps build leaders in the community. “I started seeing that I could build a connection with kids because I look like them and I talk like them,” said Luvice. “I really enjoyed knowing I was involved (in their lives) when they would tell me they got a good grade on a test or they were helping their mom with something.”

“Nate has done the full 180 degrees from where he was to where he is now,” said Kiefer. “I have never seen anyone else give up what he had to give up to get there.” Luvice agreed, noting that he has no fear of the future. “I am not afraid to move forward,” he said. “The mentors all build each other up.” Bench Mark is currently open from 3 to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. Bixler has been a volunteer at CrossNet Ministries, with three locations on Franklin Street in New Holland, since he was a child, and his mother took him in during the summer to help pack lunches. As a high school student he volunteered with the Cross Jr. afterschool program. So when Bixler reached out regarding his college project, Marburger was

Until Penn State returns to an in-person format, Bixler will continue to volunteer at CrossNet. “I feel grateful that I can help out, and I definitely enjoy it,” said Bixler. “There are always opportunities to make a difference.” CrossNet Ministries offers a variety of programs to the community, including a youth center, social services programs, and more. Recent events have caused families to experience unprecedented isolation and cultural challenges that have made many parents wary of the future. Considering the subject matter of the study, COP Central facilitators Deb and Keith Garner referenced verses in Deuteronomy and Proverbs that apply to raising children, noting, “We have an obligation as parents and grandparents to teach our children the ways of the Lord.” They referred to the study as one that will help equip parents and grandparents to help children navigate the cultural waters. Connell added that rather than dividing the sermon, the author has set up the study so that participants will consider the whole sermon to see how they should navigate the world we live in. “The Art of Parenting” is a video-based study designed to help parents find new ways to integrate faith into everyday moments and to celebrate healthy breakthroughs in the parenting journey. The study will be facilitated by Dr. John and Debbie Tornfelt, who bring 40 years of parenting and ministry to the conversation.
